The New York City-based, New Mexico native shares her album Rumpumpo with the world. Kate Vargas, the “junkyard folk” artist, has put aside the party for meditation, yoga, clean eating, and a fresh perspective on life as she hones in on her music.

Weeks before Vargas was scheduled to record her new album, the pandemic struck. At an impasse, she struggled to move forward in her craft. Months later, in a conversation with a friend about feeling stuck, he stated Newton’s First Law: “An object in motion stays in motion and an object at rest stays at rest unless acted upon by an outside force,” which subsequently inspires the first single and title track off her album, “Rumpumpo.”

Rumpumpo features the previously released singles “Church of Misdirection,” and “Glorieta to the Holy Place”, an ode to her home of New Mexico that celebrates the pilgrimage to Chimayo. Each year, thousands of people travel over 30 miles to El Santuario de Chimayo on Good Friday to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus. The church is said to have healing powers, particularly the sand inside. Vargas sings about a young girl who hears of this holy place and takes it upon herself to make the pilgrimage for the sake of her suffering family amidst the pandemic.

With Rumpumpo, Vargas continues her meteoric rise with songs that stir the emotional cauldron, blazing a genre-bending path that is both sonically and lyrically daring.

About Kate Vargas:

The New Mexico-raised, NYC-based artist is building ever more mindfully on her sound, and the music press is taking notice, Vargas receiving praise from a variety of respected outlets including Billboard, NPR, Noisey, and the Huffington Post, the latter assessing, “There is an unlimited amount of potential in this superstar on the rise.”

Vargas has packed houses from Ireland’s Westport Folk and Bluegrass Festival to The Troubadour in London, The Mansion on O Street in Washington D.C. to New York’s Bowery Electric. Featuring her singular folk-style storytelling, Vargas’ songs are grounded in a darkly melodic, reverb-washed sonic palette of dreampop, dusty folk and junkyard blues, all carried by rough-hewn vocals and guitar playing. In equal measure, she channels a surprising array of artists, from Tom Waits, Fiona Apple, and 16 Horsepower to Lana Del Rey and K. Flay.

In March of 2020, the pandemic brought the world to a screeching halt just weeks before Vargas was scheduled to record her new album. With plans on indefinite hold, Vargas found herself struggling to find a way forward. Months later, while talking to a friend about her feeling that she had stalled out, he simply stated Newton’s 1st law – an object in motion stays in motion, an object at rest stays at rest, unless acted upon by an external force. She needed an external force.

Around the same time, in a fortuitous twist of fate, Vargas found herself on the west coast just as her producer was relocating out west as well. An external force. Not one to squander an opportunity, Vargas quickly made plans to record in Los Angeles. Two more problems emerged. One, Vargas’ beloved Gibson guitar was twenty-eight hundred miles away in her apartment in New York and two, she still needed to write one more song for the album. Ever resourceful, calls were made and in the eleventh hour, Vargas found herself writing a song based on Newton’s 1st law on a guitar on loan from Jackson Browne. That song would become the title track, Rumpumpo.

Always challenging, Rumpumpo is peppered with restless moments, from the title track to the mesmerizing “Glorieta to the Holy Place”, a New Mexico-based story of a young girl’s pilgrimage to the town of Chimayo as a test of faith during the pandemic. Vargas escorts us to dark and uncomfortable places, but always with an arm around the shoulder and a reassuring grin. In the swampy “Spit 3 Times”, we are taken on a musical Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, exploring the nooks and crannies of obsession, then thrust into the stripped-down ballad “Someday”, a love song at once morbid, disturbing and yet beautiful that reaches a peak reminiscent of George Martin and The Beatles (circa 1967). Whether drawn from folklore or direct experience, Vargas injects an intimate feel into each song via her poetic lyricism and jagged vocal delivery. At times, Vargas damn near hypnotizes, her compositions seeping to the edge of the subconscious, hardwiring listeners to ponder questions that, in other contexts, might make them squirm.

Vargas’ childhood in Corrales, New Mexico, had a profound impact on the woman and artist she would become. This artist and farming village just outside Albuquerque was populated with Mexican-Catholic families like hers, as well as creatives and a variety of seekers. It was a community rich in oral tradition and folklore, steeped in tales of good and evil, ghosts and witches, sin, The Devil, even extraterrestrial visitors. “It was a strange and wonderful place that I’ve really come to appreciate as an adult. There was a culture of storytelling, and the stories were often dark: the way I write songs now is rooted in that tradition. The paranormal and the supernatural always seem to make their way in. It was a great place for an imagination to run wild. If I told my mother I was bored, she’d tell me, ‘Go outside and pretend something.’”

Still, the slow pace of rural small-town life was excruciating at times for Vargas, who longed for the action and possibility of the big city. She began playing the flute at a young age and by the time she was in high school developed an interest in jazz that led her to Boston where she studied music at Berklee. Once there, she consistently found herself coming back to writing and guitar after classes. Upon graduating from Berklee, Vargas relocated to New York City, playing an open mic night every Monday at the now defunct P & G Bar on the Upper West Side. “People were so disgustingly positive,” she says, “and that kept me coming back.”

Eventually, the club gave her a showcase spot and more gigs followed. With people continually asking her for a CD, Vargas knew the time had come to make an album. Her debut, the DIY affair Down to My Soul, was released in 2014, hinting at the promise of a vibrant new voice. Her follow-up, 2016’s Strangeclaw, was recorded at New York’s Mercy Sound Studios (Blondie, Macy Gray) and mastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, capturing Vargas’ impressive growth as an artist in gorgeous fidelity.

Vargas really hit her stride with 2018’s For the Wolfish & Wandering, connecting with audiences like never before, culminating in invitations to perform on NPR’s Mountain Stage, an official showcase at Nashville’s AmericanaFest, several performances at the 30A Songwriters Festival, as well as her songs appearing on television shows Stumptown (ABC), Midnight, Texas (NBC) and Good Trouble (Freeform).

Away from all the noise of his various successes – three UK top 5 albums including the platinum-selling, chart-topping Long Way Down; two top 10 singles; a 2013 Brit award for Critic’s Choice – there’s one thing that’s always kept Tom Odell grounded: songwriting. A classic songwriter in the mould of Elton John (who’s a big fan, actually), Odell – who was awarded a prestigious Ivor Novello for Songwriter of the Year in 2014 – relied on his passion more than ever when it came to crafting his fourth album, the pop-leaning, emotionally-healing monsters out today, July 9 via Sony Music UK/RCA Records.

Tom Odell’s new song out today “over you yet” has him lamenting a past relationship which he painfully cannot disconnect from. While the subject matter can be heavy, there’s a lightness of touch that means he is able to pull off pop’s greatest trick – hiding sadness in bright, joyful melodies.  The track is subtly embraced by his newfound love of DIY electronic pop with its beat-driven melancholic production.

After a dark period of mental health stalked most of his 2018 and 2019, Odell wrote his way through it, eventually letting down his guard and pouring his feelings on everything from anxiety to capitalism, toxic masculinity to politics, into a 16-track opus that feels like both a daring creative rebirth and a solidifying of Odell’s strengths. It’s all there in the opening song and album lead single, “numb” which opens with Odell’s unadorned vocal over sparse piano – “I hold my hand over the flame, to see if I can feel some pain,” he sings – before eerie, wheezing electronics and layers of clipped beats cloak the song in a sticky sadness.

“I was writing songs like I always did, but it wasn’t until I started writing about stuff that was contributing to my mental health problems that I felt like a record was forming,” he says of the album – his first since 2018’s 70s rock-leaning Jubilee Road, which was started in May 2019 and finished in Odell’s home studio between lockdowns in 2020. That thematic turning point came in the shape of the single “monster,” which like the album’s lead single “numb” confronts that sentiment head on. With the sky-scraping chorus (“you’re just a monster and I’m not scared”) initially inspired by Trump, and more specifically climate change activist Greta Thunberg staring him down at the UN Climate Summit in 2019, the song soon morphed into something more abstract, a self-help mantra for Odell’s ongoing battle with anxiety. “It’s about trying to tell myself that this thing I’m feeling is not real,” he says. “It always used to happen in bathrooms – I’d be out somewhere and then I’d walk to the bathroom and my heart would go at a million miles per hour and I’d feel like I was about to collapse, and I’d try to tell myself it was fine. That it will pass. That it’s a state of mind.”

Odell has been working as a musician in the public eye since he was 21 when self-penned debut album Long Way Down earned him a number 1 album, a top 10 single, the epic “Another Love and a Brit Award. Now, 30, it’s clear to Odell that the whirlwind around his debut kick-started a work ethic that eventually became an obsession. “Just wanting to completely lose myself in it but to a damaging extent I think.” It reached an apex in September 2019 when Odell, fresh off touring Jubilee Road, went straight to LA to start writing the next album. “Then this chronic anxiety that I’d had for a couple of years just got worse – I was very lonely, I was drinking way too much, and it just got really bad.” He takes a deep breath. “I was taking Valium every day to try and just not have a panic attack. I was seeing multiple psychologists over there.” Plans were made to fly to Nashville to work with producer Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Twenty One Pilots) but were swiftly cancelled after Odell woke up one morning “and I couldn’t do anymore music.”  He knew something had to change. “It was like I’m going to end up with something terrible happening,” he sighs. “I used to sit on Santa Monica beach and look at the planes taking off from LAX and just dream of being on one.” In the end he flew back home, went straight to his parent’s house, and slowly got better. “That was the point I started writing these songs.”

Slowly but surely, Odell turned that challenging experience into a new album. He also realized his broader lyrical horizons needed to be matched by a musical expansion, with a lot of the songs on the album – created alongside songwriter Laurie Blundell and producer Miles James – leaning into a more electronic, bedroom pop sound that Odell has steadily become obsessed with over the last few years. It wasn’t always that way, mind you. “I really turned my nose up at anything that was made on a computer,” he laughs. “I just didn’t like pop music. Some of that was my issue and some of it was that pop music wasn’t that good four or five years ago – it’s so interesting now. I hear lyrical subjects that I don’t think anyone’s heard in pop music before. I felt like I was getting caught up in that fire and suddenly I was so excited.” This newfound love of DIY electronic pop chimed with the pandemic’s arrival and songs were crafted in a more threadbare way around instruments he had at hand, like Moog synths. It was a move underpinned by both necessity and a desire to explore.

“It was the inhibition of not being able to use a full band that pushed things forward,” he says. So eerie synths and head-rattling beats augment the frayed-around-the-edges, impassioned rallying cry of “fighting fire with fire” (“I’m sick of white messiahs”), while “money” – which rails against society’s obsession with capitalism, while also pointing at the reflection in the mirror – is built around a driving pulse of echo-laden beats and crunchy, metallic percussion. On “numb,” inspired by experimental musician Mica Levi’s soundscapes, synthetic textures are painstakingly fused with acoustic flourishes. “I would say there was this period before it all unraveled in LA where I was just disconnected,” he says of the lyrical inspiration for “numb.”  “I felt bogged down, like I was beginning to lose that sense of lightness.”

fighting fire with fire,” “numb” and “monster” also touch on ideas around prevailing toxic masculinity and its effects on body-image issues. “On ‘monster,” I like the idea that I’m singing the chorus to myself – this idea of body image and never being good enough. You look in the mirror and it’s like ‘you’re just a monster.’ Those low self-esteem moments that we all have.” That theme also permeates the fragile, heart-breaking piano ballad and future single, lose you again, which pores over a fractured relationship and rails at the stoicism that bleeds out of men being afraid to show their feelings. Continuing to hide sadness in bright, joyful melodies is the buoyant pop shimmer of me and my friends, inspired by a homeless person Odell met briefly in LA who called him out on his patronizing need to help her, and the pastoral, 60s-inspired guitar that flutters around the broken tales of the lush tears that never dry.

As a testament to his enduring popularity, Tom Odell was invited to perform on BBC1’s Graham Norton TV show, and  more recently he appeared on the The Late Late Show with James Corden with another intimate performance.  At the same time, Odell’s fan base continues to grow exponentially with his new sound and direction. He has gained over 4 million new monthly listeners since the start of the year, with two thirds of his audience under 25. Despite joining TikTok relatively recently, his heavily engaged videos have been viewed over 15 million times, and his first ever single “Another Love” has had a resurgence in popularity amongst a new generation, becoming a viral hit and entering the UK official singles charts again.

Four albums into his career and Tom Odell has made a record that feels free of expectation, free of other people’s perceptions of who he is as an artist. While it was darkness that inspired him, he has managed to transform that into a multi-layered, genre-bending pop album full of light, and hope, even in the strangest of times. monsters also represents the start of chapter two in Odell’s ongoing musical journey. “I feel like I’ll be doing this for as long as I can,” Odell smiles. “I also feel like I do it for the right reasons – because I love making music.” He’s confident, too, after a difficult few years lost in the wilderness. “I feel like I’ve got shit to say and I’m good at what I’m doing now.”

On Rock Back & Forth,” a smooth, clean guitar riff underscores his breathy verses before blossoming into a simmering hook, “They just don’t move like you move, they just don’t dance like you do. In the accompanying visual, he moves in a myriad of ways, attending an aerial physique teacher training session, pole dance workout, and even roller skating by the beach.  Watch it HERE.

About “Rock Back & Forth,” he explained, “I wrote this tune after watching Dirty Dancing with my previous partner. I adored how she was able to express herself through dance. I never felt comfortable dancing myself, but it was a joy to watch someone else be so liberated. ‘Rock Back & Forth’ was assurance for my partner. Even though there are other beautiful people in the world, what you love about your partner is their nuances, individuality, and unique style. I thought I would discover different forms of movement to see if it’d help with my own self-confidence. I hope other people can take courage if they’re as uncomfortable with dance as I am.”

The music of Healthy Baby Boy, Part 1 relays the artist’s coming-of-age, whisked out of obscurity in Edinburg, VA by mega-producer Ricky Reed and trading a town of 1,000 residents for Los Angeles, where the budding talent is now making a lifelong dream a reality.

Most recently, he unveiled “Damn Bean” with a Pulp Fiction-inspired music video. Prior, John-Robert dropped “USMO,” an acronym short for “You Should Move On” and set the stage for Healthy Baby Boy, Part 1 with the release of title track Healthy Baby Boy” last October. In the last decade of a career that spanned half a century, Johnny Cash capped off his musical legend with a breathtaking final act, recording a series of raw, stripped-down albums with producer Rick Rubin. Those albums reestablished Cash as a vital artist, while adding a remarkable closing chapter to his incredible body of work.

In November 2003, two months after Cash’s passing, Rubin’s label American Recordings released Unearthed, an expansive box set of material, most of it previously unreleased, recorded during the artist’s graceful twilight years. The set was originally planned to celebrate Cash and Rubin’s decade of recording together, and the final mixes had been sent to Cash, but he passed away before receiving them. The recordings, which run the stylistic gamut from stark balladry to punchy rockabilly to heartfelt gospel to classic covers, offer a stunning encapsulation of Cash’s wide-ranging musical vision, and provide a fitting epitaph for his iconic career.

To celebrate the Man in Black’s enduring and influential legacy, American Recordings and UMe have reconfigured this monolithic collection for its first-ever vinyl release, spreading Unearthed’s 79 songs over nine high-quality 180-gram vinyl LPs while expanding the original box’s distinctive packaging for the long-playing format. 

 
Available November 3, the Unearthed vinyl box features a pair of cloth-bound books housed in an LP-sized black cloth slipcase. One book holds the nine LPs, while the other is a gorgeous 60-page coffee table book that incorporates Sylvie Simmons’ extensive liner notes, drawn from five days of interviews at Cash’s home in Tennessee, as well as Cash and Rubin’s comments on every song on the set, plus a copious selection of photographs from the recording sessions, including some of the last photos ever taken of Cash. Unearthed
is divided into five thematic sections. Who’s Gonna Cry focuses on acoustic solo recordings, and finds Cash revisiting several classic songs from his legendary catalog. Trouble In Mind is oriented towards electric performances, and includes guest appearances by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Carl Perkins and members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as Cash’s wife and longtime duet partner June Carter Cash. Redemption Songs is largely acoustic, and features duets with Joe Strummer, Fiona Apple, Nick Cave and Glen Campbell. My Mother’s Hymn Book demonstrates Cash’s lifelong affinity for gospel music, encompassing 15 time-honored gospel standards. Best of Cash On American offers a memorable 15-song selection of highlights from Cash’s first four albums with Rubin.

 
In its original CD release, Unearthed was acclaimed as an instant classic. Rolling Stone named it as one of the “100 Best Albums of the 2000s” and declared the set “a slice of American culture as monumental, and as enduring, as Mt. Rushmore.”

 
Indeed, in the years since Cash’s passing, the artist’s legend has grown and his music has gained in power. It’s hard to think of a more appropriate and impressive sendoff for this one-of-a-kind American original than the massive musical statement that is Unearthed.
