Instyle June Cover Stars

Instyle June Issue On sale May 17th

The cast of Big Little Lies is covering InStyle’s June issue with 5 separate covers: Reese WitherspoonNicole KidmanShailene WoodleyZoe Kravitz and Laura Dern.

The lives of the cast have overlapped in myriad ways. Nicole and Reese have a production partnership (Big Little Lies is their brainchild). Reese starred with Laura in Wild. Laura starred with Shailene in The Fault in Our Stars. Shailene starred with Zoë in Divergent. Nicole has known Zoë since she dated her father, Lenny Kravitz, 16 years ago. And so it goes. These women’s relationships run much deeper than “ensemble cast”; rather, they have influenced and enriched each other’s lives.

  • Reese: I had a conversation last week that I never would have had seven years ago. It was about compensation: what a woman would make on a project versus what a guy in a similar position would make. I went to the mat for that woman. She’ll never know I made that call or had that conversation with the head of a studio. But I said to him, “This is the comp. This white guy over here is making this amount of money, and she’s done this, that, and the other with such success—and you’re asking for her to have a third of that. That’s not OK with me.”
  • Shailene: In my early 20s I got rid of everything I owned and lived out of a carry-on. I loved it. As I got older I really craved a home, but now I find myself hungry for constant change again.
  • Zoe: I dealt with eating disorders in high school and my early 20s. I always felt like I needed to look like a supermodel to do my job, which I don’t. The supermodels are doing it quite well. But when you’re starting your career, you think you have to be the hot girl who can play some guy’s girl- friend. And then you work more, and you grow up. With Big Little Lies, we were all so hungry to play real characters. It’s not about what we look like, it’s about what we feel like.
  • Laura Dern: Not at all. “Ambition” was a dirty word for women when I was a little girl. Women who are ambitious are cold, calculating, and unsexy—that was the idea presented to my generation. To be sexy was to be demure, subservient even. And I was raised by actresses, like my mother [Diane Ladd], my godmother Shelley Winters, my mom’s friend Jane Fonda, and Gena Rowlands. I saw powerful women as artists or daring to challenge the medical profession and fighting to be doctors—but they weren’t in a boardroom. They weren’t CEOs. That’s where the pants came in. And women didn’t wear pants, so they couldn’t do that.
  • Nicole Kidman: Other people are o doing things like having a girls’ weekend. I don’t have that because I go home. I want to be with my children and my husband [singer-songwriter Keith Urban]. I will sort of get lost in a character or whatever I’m doing, but I’m constantly working to keep that balance. …… I go home to hug my kids. Literally, I’ll go in and snuggle them. They’ll always be waiting up. I’ll hug my husband too. The greatest thing our family priest told us very early on in our marriage was, “Always kiss hello and kiss goodbye.” It just keeps you connected.

SHAGGY – Wah Gwaan?!

Today (May 2), Shaggy will debut the album’s latest single “You” featuring the 19-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter Alexander Stewart with a performance on The Late Late Show with James Corden on CBS. Next week, the duo will grace the stage of ABC’s Good Morning America on Wednesday, May 8 followed by performances on Live with Kelly and Ryan on Tuesday, May 14 and Strahan & Sara on Friday, May 17. Tune in to hear the song that Billboard calls an “irresistibly upbeat EDM/dancehall fusion.”

Wah Gwaan?! is Shaggy’s most personal album to date and an emblematic display of his rich sound influenced by all styles of music. He embodies his Jamaican roots on dancehall tracks like “Caribbean Way,” “Frenemy,” “Ketch Mi Up” and “Money Up” ft. Noah Powa. Shaggy balances the seductive energy of rising dancehall superstar Shenseea and GRAMMY-nominated R&B powerhouse vocalist Stacy Barthe on “Super Natural.” His musical worlds collide on “Body Good” ft. Nicky Jam, one of the biggest acts out of the urban Latino scene. Shaggy continues to spread his contagious joy on “Use Me” and “Makeup Sex” ft. Nyanda and reveals his introspective side on “Wrong Room,” an ode about his mother. The artist expands his global reach with the irresistible smash “You” ft. Alexander Stewart and “When She Loves Me” ft. Rayvon. Shaggy and Rayvon have a long hit-making history, spawning ‘90s & ‘00s mega anthems “In The Summertime,” “Angel” and “Big Up.” Shaggy also taps a diverse range of producers including the legendary dancehall brothers Tony CD Kelly and Dave Kelly, Martin Kierszenbaum (Sting, Lady Gaga), iLLWayno (Nicki Minaj, Nas, 2 Chainz), Kizzo and Costi Official. Wah Gwaan?! represents a robust musical journey by a musician/songwriter/entertainer/armed forces veteran that invites the listener in with vibrancy, urgency and hope. Most of all, it captures the Caribbean-forged, energy-infused, adventure-informed musical impulses of a one-of-kind original: Shaggy.

Shaggy will tour throughout the spring and summer. He will also join Sting for a series of shows spanning across the UK in late May performing songs off their recent GRAMMY winner for Best Reggae Album, entitled 44/876, as well as their own respective greatest hits, together. Best UK City For Families

BABY- FRIENDLY BATH IS BEST UK CITY FOR FAMILIES
  • Bath takes top spot for second successive year in MoneySuperMarket’s annual Family Living Index
  • Bristol is the least family friendly city, with London again near the bottom of the list
  • MoneySuperMarket reveals how to manage your finances in preparation for buying a home

MoneySuperMarket, the UK’s leading price comparison site, today reveals that Bath is officially the best location to raise a family – taking the top spot for the second year in a row.

MoneySuperMarket’s annual Family Living Index, now in its third year, ranks 35 UK cities based on six key factors (local school rankings, access to green space, likelihood of burglary, house prices, job opportunities and average salary) to help parents find the city that best matches their family requirements.

Bath retains its title as the UK’s best place to raise a family, thanks to a high number of job opportunities and schools rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted per capita. Wolverhampton is the second most desirable city to live in, moving up one place from last year, followed by the north east heartlands of Newcastle and Sunderland. Manchester again features in the top five, but moves down a place from fourth last year.

At the other end of the scale, Bristol has overtaken London to become this year’s least family friendly city, due to a 33% rise in contents theft and a decline in ‘outstanding’-rated schools. Despite having the highest average income and level of disposable income, London continues to find itself near the bottom of the list due to high average house prices (£478,749).

Top five family friendly cities:

City 2018 rank 2019 rank Reason
Bath 1st 1st Retains top spot due to an increase in income
Wolverhampton 3rd 2nd Similar results from last year, but benefits from other locations’ declining scores
Newcastle 2nd 3rd Drops one place due to an increase in contents theft, despite having the most ‘outstanding’-rated schools per capita
Sunderland 6th 4th Rises thanks to improved income metrics
Manchester 4th 5th Drops one place due to a fall in income

Least family friendly cities:

City 2018 rank 2019 rank Reason
Bristol 33rd 35th Falls into last position due to a rise in contents theft rate and high house prices
London 35th 34th Places second to last in the rankings due to high house prices, despite having the highest income scores
Leicester 32nd 33rd Drops one place due to a decrease in average income
Peterborough 29th 32nd Drops three places because it has the fewest ‘outstanding’-rated schools in the country
Edinburgh 27th 31st Drops four places due to an increase in contents theft rate claims

The biggest climber this year is Newry, with the Northern Irish city jumping 10 places to 12th in the rankings due to an increase in disposable income and a high number of ‘outstanding’-rated schools per capita. Stoke, this year’s most affordable place to buy a home, Chester, Leeds and Brighton all climb seven places in the rankings.

Oxford sees the biggest drop, falling 18 places since last year to 30th in the rankings, due to its high contents theft rate, and a decreasing number of ‘outstanding’-rated schools. Cardiff also drops 14 places to 22nd, with a weakened position in almost every category, most notably in contents theft rate.

Further research reveals that two thirds (67%) of Brits believe they have seen a change to their quality of life in the last five years, with health (37%), a change in household bills (27%), moving to a new house (22%) and an increase in salary (21%) ranking as the top contributing factors. Other factors such as Brexit (8%), the local area changing (10%) and having to support an elderly family member (5%) also impacted their quality of life1.

Tom Flack, editor-in-chief at MoneySuperMarket, commented: “If you’re thinking of buying a home, it’s worth looking at the bigger picture and taking things such as local amenities, job opportunities and green spaces into consideration. If you have young children, take a look at the schools and the catchment area – many people will pick the area they live in based on this alone.

“When buying a property, it’s important to sort out the family finances so you can make the most of your money – and that includes purchases such as life insurance. If you have dependents, taking out a policy would provide financial support to your family if you were to pass away, helping them to clear outstanding debts and meet living expenses. Taking out life insurance will give you peace of mind, knowing that your family is protected financially in a worst case scenario.”

Discover Outdoors Foundation: Hike-a-Thon

Discover Outdoors Foundation announces their fifth annual Hike-a-Thon, to take place on June 9, 2019. Add meaning to your miles at this annual fundraising event that helps under-resourced students get out of the city and into the great outdoors. Funds raised by hikers support the Foundation’s zero-cost, year-long mentorship programs for New York high school students, Young Women Who Crush and Advanced Leadership Training Adventures.

Returning for its fifth year, the Hike-a-Thon brings individuals and teams of fundraisers together for a day of hiking on the Appalachian trail. The full hike spans eighteen miles of Harriman State Park, and participants have the option of shorter courses: the nine mile, two peak challenge over West and Bear Mountains, or the four mile loop over the Bear Mountain Summit. At the end of the day, Hike-a-Thon participants will gather at Bear Mountain State Park for a picnic and award ceremony celebrating top fundraisers. All participants will receive a t-shirt, prize pack, and free entry to the picnic.

With each step, hikers move towards a more adventurous world for New York City youth who have fewer opportunities to experience the magic of the New York wilderness. The Discover Outdoors Foundation’s Young Women Who Crush program brings female high school students on rock climbing excursions that equip them to move mountains in their daily lives. The Foundation’s Advanced Leadership Training Adventures program hones high school students’ leadership and outdoor skills, teaches environmental stewardship, and builds a path for careers in the outdoors industry.

BANKS “Gimme”

BANKS returns with the darkly hypnotic single “Gimme,”which debuted earlier as Zane Lowe’s World Record onApple Music’s Beats 1.

“‘Gimme’ is a song about getting what you want. It’s about knowing what you deserve, saying it out loud, and demanding it with no apologies. I’m ready to release this into the world and begin a new chapter,” says BANKS.

BANKS wrote the song with Buddy Ross (Frank Ocean, HAIM), and joined forces with producers Hudson Mohawke (Kanye West, Drake) and BJ Burton (Bon Iver, Francis and the Lights) to realize her vision. Released by Harvest Records, “Gimme” is the first new music from BANKS since her late 2017 single, “Underdog.” Stream / download “Gimme” HERE. Watch the visualizer HERE.

BANKS has amassed 1.2 billion global streams to date across all of her songs, including over 600 million cumulative streams in the U.S. alone. After the release of her breakout debut album, Goddess, she became the world’s most blogged about artist. The 2014 album included the RIAA-certified Platinum hit “Beggin For Thread” and the Gold single “Waiting Game.”

The Altar, released in 2016, debuted in the Top 10 in over 30 countries on iTunes. Coup De Main observed, “‘The Altar’ is an album that rewards with each listen, initially packing a powerful punch with its independence and self-determination.”

BANKS’ television performances include “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and “Late Show with David Letterman.” Her songs have been heard in films (Divergent, The Longest Ride) and licensed by such television shows as “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Power.”

Kate Tempest “Firesmoke”

Today, critically acclaimed British spoken word artist, rapper, poet, novelist and playwright Kate Tempest returns with her new song “Firesmoke”—listen HERE! Tempest also announces her third studio album, The Book of Traps and Lessons, is set to be released on June 14 via American Recordings/Republic Records. The album is available now for pre-order HERE.

Of “Firesmoke,” Kate says, “I think of the song like a cleansing moment in the wider context of the record, in the same way that a relationship can be a cleansing moment in the wider context of a life. A kind of a turning point. I wrote it for my woman. Inspired by her and everything that falling in love with her has taught me.”

Consequence of Sound, who spoke to Kate about the origins of “Firesmoke,” praises the track saying, “The slow, soulful track sounds how wrapping a soft feather down comforter around yourself and a lover feels: comfortable, quiet, and eternal.”

The highly anticipated album was crafted with Rick Rubin and Dan Carey over the course of the past five years. It follows Tempest’s previous releases, 2014’s Everybody Down and 2016’s Let Them Eat Chaos, both of which were shortlisted for Mercury Prize in 2014 and 2017, respectively. Last year, Kate Tempest was nominated at The BRIT Awards for Best Female Solo Performer.

A handful of words often tell you everything you need to know. When asked, who is Kate Tempest? She gives a brief, albeit telling answer. “Kate Tempest is the words,” she responds. You haven’t ever seen, heard, or experienced anyone quite like her. Tempest uncovers the missing link between the Golden Ages of literature and hip-hop. The London-born BRIT Award-nominated spoken word artist, rapper, poet, novelist, and playwright rhymes with a century-turning fury. Since her emergence in 2011, she has redefined what it means to be a wordsmith in the Modern Age. To date, she has published three poetry collections, staged three plays, and released two studio albums. Along the way, she entranced audiences on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy FallonNPR’s “Tiny Desk,” and more. Not to mention, she garnered widespread critical acclaim from The New York TimesThe New YorkerForbes, and more, to name a few. In the midst of this whirlwind journey, she performed a passage of her popular 75-minute narrative poem, Brand New Ancients, on Charlie Rose. Legendary producer and American Recordings Founder Rick Rubin caught the show, tracked down her phone number, and made a call. This set a series of events in motion that led to her 2019 debut album for American Recordings, The Book of Traps and Lessons, set for release on June 14.
