The summit had its focus on a wide range of issues, including human rights, climate change, and the economy. However, among all the topics, the future of Taiwan has been one of the major focuses of the globe.

Since the uncertainty of the global pandemic and political concern, Xi has canceled all his traveling plans since January 2020. The two leaders have spoken through telephone twice this year, nevertheless this time they were intended to lead a more exhaustive discussion of the previous issues.

Although the summit was taken place virtually, the place was carefully selected. Xi along with his allies was at the East Hall in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, Biden and his team were at the Roosevelt Room at the White House.

The joy of life is my greatest inspiration. This motor is so big that I can’t imagine running out of ideas at some point. I like doing two things for a living: sleeping and dancing. Many ideas come to me when I fall asleep or wake up and when I can dance without restraint.

How did Making The Cut (MTC) change your view of the fashion industry? 

When I studied fashion design in Berlin and Paris in the nineties and early noughties, the term “digitalization” was not really an issue in the fashion industry. I founded my own label over 17 years ago, which has grown very slowly on its own. Until I took part in MTC, I didn’t have an online shop, or only one that didn’t work. But I knew that if my brand was to survive the next 30 years, I had to change and become more digital. Who should I learn from, if not the biggest?

From a show like MTC of course you don’t only learn, you see what’s possible with a lot of money. But if you manage to transfer what you have experienced and seen at the highest level and translate it to your very own DNA, you can take the next steps. I don’t think there is a right or a wrong way in the fashion industry. There are an incredible number of individual paths. Depending on what the goal is.

After coming back from the MTC shoot, I didn’t do anything creative for 8 months, I just prepared business-wise for the airing of MTC: New website, new online store, new strategy. Today, I work with my pattern maker with avatars and digital fittings. This saves us a lot of time and resources.

How has the newly found attention changed/shaped you?

The new attention was a boon for my brand to finally grow. Many things have become a little easier professionally. But the pandemic probably slowed down the speed of this growth a bit and still does. Personally, I only got a limited amount of that attention. When the first season of MTC came out, which I was part of the cast of, the world went into its first hard lockdown. For months, I just worked a lot with my small team and sent packages all over the world every day, but especially to the US, without having the opportunity to meet many people. Germany is a grateful or ungrateful country, depending on how you take it, when it comes to addressing public figures. In the meantime, I had the feeling that hardly anyone in Germany had seen the show.

You were unsure about whether or not to take part in Making The Cut. How do you feel about it now?

Yes, I was indeed very unsure when I received the first request to participate in MTC 1. For 16 years, I had been flying the flag for a freer, more unconventional and uncommercial way in the fashion industry, which also had a stronger connection to art. I felt it wasn’t for me or would betray my brand. But quite the opposite. It was the best decision I made for my business, but also for my life in general. In the last three years, since shooting MTC 1, I have learnt an incredible amount and finally started to build a sustainable foundation for my brand. Every path in the fashion industry is very individual and mine is probably also an atypical one. But it’s fun to see myself making strategic and business decisions in a very different way now and to see that the word “commercial” is not a dirty word for me.

Do you have any moments in your career you look back to often?

Oh yes, of course. I often think today where I got the strength to hold out for so long and to go through all the deep valleys. For many years I called my studio the “Palace of Tears”. Every few days there were tears because I felt like I was standing on the spot or because it was financially on the brink. But somewhere deep inside me, I always believed that it would work out and become easier one day.

How would you describe your design aesthetic?

The signature of my brand has developed from the three cities in which I have lived in and which have been very important and inspiring for me: Berlin, Moscow and Paris.

Berlin, as the city where I was born, the city divided over the years with a great historical history, with its roughness, toughness, punk, subculture, snootiness. Moscow, with its avant-garde of the 1920s, the constructivists, high-necked, the uniforms and the austerity. And then of course Paris, as the city that gave me the finishing touch, the elegance, the femininity, and the glamor.

This special mix and the reduction to the color “black,” is meant to give my wearers a strength and make them grow. The focus on details should make the viewer curious to take a closer look at clothing.

What are the biggest challenges you have faced as a designer?

It has always been both a curse and a blessing that I have had to fight my own way through, especially financially. This has extremely slowed down the growth of my brand, but at the same time it has given me the chance and the time to carefully develop my signature and the DNA and to look closely at what I really want.

Do you think your surroundings and environment play a part in how you choose your designs?

Yes, definitely. As a creative, you unconsciously absorb everything you come across. I love observing people and thinking about why they wear the clothes they do. What identity do they have, and which one do they want to slip into? Dealing directly with my customers in the shop every day has of course influenced my choice of designs. Since MTC, I do a lot of styles in larger sizes and now a lot of women come and have my collection pieces made to measure. That’s a big market.

What are the next goals for your brand?

The USA has become my main sales market in the last two years. The next goal would be to open my own shop in New York for a while and then also produce locally so that customers who buy online don’t have to pay customs and the high shipping costs.

In fashion Esther Perbandt will continue to explore various paths, especially in creating haute couture looks for numerous events, as well as digging into costume design areas whenever projects allow for it.

It’s said that the future is unknown but at least with Esther Perbandt it will always continue to surprise and excite. We look forward to seeing more from her.

Independent curator Zoe Lukov and Ben Lee Ritchie Handler, Global Director of Nicodim Gallery moderated a spirited, invitation-only panel discussion during Miami Art Week at iconic oceanfront property Cadillac Hotel & Beach Club, located at 3925 Collins Avenue.

Artists Isabelle Albuquerque and Raúl de Nieves participated in a candid conversation about their inspirations, artistic processes, and techniques over brunch at the Art Deco waterfront hotel on Friday, December 3. The private event was in celebration of “Skin in the Game,” an exhibition of work by 35 diverse artists, curated by Lukov, about touch, transmission, and skin – the potential, vulnerability and contained therein — as a boundary to protect from danger or as a porous border to receive.

In attendance were Nicodim Gallery owner Mihai Nicodim; Desert X President and Founder Susan Davis; Desert X Artistic Director Neville Wakefield; artists Devin B. Johnson, Alicia Adamerovich, Nicolette Mishkan, Orlando Estrada, and Allison Eden; interior designer and celebrity chef Travis London; gallerist Ana Cristea; art collector Walid Wahab; philanthropist Jenni Coba; and actress and model Celesta Hodge, among others.

“Artists create channels to the divine, that take us to another level,” said Lukov, in conversation with the panel. Nicodim Gallery’s Handler commented on “the performance and ritual of making the magic” [of art], adding cheekily, “What I like about this exhibition is that it’s not afraid to be a little dirty.” Artist Isabelle Albuquerque, a Los Angeles-based sculptor and performer, spoke of “sculpture as a memory,” a vehicle “to remember what an experience feels like.” Raúl de Nieves, a New York-based interdisciplinary artist, performer, and musician, likened art to “a celebratory skin” that provides “something to believe in, to manifest the strength within us.”

ABOUT ZOE LUKOV

Zoe Lukov is a curator, producer, and writer. Formerly chief curator of Faena Art in Miami Beach and in Buenos Aires, Lukov conceived of and produced both the first and second Faena Festivals in 2018 and 2019. In addition, she organized major solo exhibits by internationally recognized artists throughout the Faena Districts. She is a founding board member of Desert X, the non-profit site-specific exhibition based in California and recently produced a documentary about Desert X 2021 that made its premiere at the Getty Museum and broadcasts on PBS in November. She produces independent curatorial projects, among them the well-received Fair, an alternative, all-women, non-commercial art fair that took place in Miami at Brickell City Centre in 2017. She got her start in the art world working for Rashida Bumbray at The Kitchen in New York, Jeffrey Deitch at MOCA Los Angeles and Franklin Sirmans on Prospect 3, the New Orleans biennial. She is a Fulbright scholar and a graduate of Oberlin College.

ABOUT SKIN IN THE GAME

Skin in the Game, an exhibition of work by 35 diverse artists, curated by Zoe Lukov and presented by Palm Heights, is a collective offering. The exhibition is about touch, transmission, and skin—the potential, vulnerability and risk contained therein—as a boundary to protect from danger or as a porous border to receive. It seeks to establish a dialogue with the erotic and has through lines that touch on game, color, race, the hunt, sport, religious iconography and competition. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will be on view from November 29 – December 10, 2021.

ABOUT ISABELLE ALBUQUERQUE

Isabelle Albuquerque is a Los Angeles-based sculptor and performer. In Orgy for 10 People in One Body, her current project, Albuquerque casts and 3D scans her own body to create ten headless, human-scaled figures that unpack deeply personal and poetic moments from her life set against history, myth, and wider contemporary socio-political movements. The work explores emergent systems of intrapersonal communion from outside the body, invoking collective identity, transhumanism, plurality, love, loss of self, relocation of memory, pleasure, and power. Sextet, Albuquerque’s critically acclaimed first solo exhibition with Nicodim, opened in September of 2020 with six sculptures from the series. ABOUT RAUL DE NIEVES

Raúl de Nieves is a New York based, Mexican interdisciplinary artist, performer, and musician whose multifaceted practice includes stained-glass-style narrative paintings, animated performances, densely adorned figurative sculptures encrusted with bangles, beads, bells, sequins, and other homespun materials. His sculptural, installation, and performance pieces make reference to religious iconography, mythology, and BDSM in conjunction with Mexican tradition and drag culture in order to explore themes of transformation and the mutability of sexuality.

STONE ISLAND PRESENTS ANNEX ART EXHIBITION AND FILM IN MIAMI

Stone Island combines the worlds of motocross and art with ANNEX, an experience curated by Katja Horvat and a film that celebrates the project by director Thibaut Grevet.

ANNEX is a group artwork installation on a motocross track on the outskirts of Miami. The event began with a private dinner where attendees were invited to preview work installed along the dynamic contours of the track. Motocross riders rode the circuit during the preview, adding context to the art concept.

From curator Katja Horvat, “By placing art onto the motocross track, we display pieces in an environment that is not traditionally a place for high art. In doing so, we highlight the influence of each of the works with a shift from aesthetic to thought. Re-contextualization in the outdoor environment brings an additional conversation to each piece. While the juxtaposition at the track creates contrast, the objects are presented to co-exist with the place rather than disrupt it. The immersion in a live environment active with moto riders brings functionality to the artworks and introduces a broader narrative to both the track and the art.”

The ANNEX film by director Thibaut Grevet is both a celebratory documentation of the event and the director’s own interpretation of the intersection between motocross and art. This short film is premiered during Miami Art Week at the Institute of Contemporary Art, and will be archived for viewing on stoneisland.com and social media channels.

TOD’S CELEBRATES ARTIST WILLIE COLE & THE MOSAIC COLLECTION

Tod’s MOSAIC Collection is a limited-edition capsule collection of handbags and accessories made with unused leather from production. In celebration of this sustainability project, Tod’s commissioned American artist, Willie Cole to create unique sculptures made from recycled Tod’s leather and unused materials. ARTCYCLING, the creative project based on the same values as Tod’s MOSAIC Collection, is brought to life by Willie in collaboration with Tod’s artisans. JEFFREY DEITCH PRESENTS SHATTERED GLASS OPENING 

Shattered Glass, the acclaimed exhibition of new art by emerging artists of color, which was shown at Jeffrey Deitch Los Angeles last spring, is being presented in an expanded version in the Moore Building in the Miami Design District. The expanded Miami version of Shattered Glass will include fifteen new artists. The painting, sculpture, and photographic works in the exhibition are all figurative. The subject matter is often the artists’ family and friends. Their primary subject is their own life and their community. The participating artists are all strongly socially engaged; many of whom incorporate powerful social messages into their work. The exhibition represents a remarkable new generation that connects with a new art audience. Jeffrey Deitch has been presenting exhibitions and public art projects in the Miami Design District since 2002.

David Castillo presents You Should Have Never Crossed the Rio Grande, a solo exhibition of fabric paintings and assemblages by Pepe Mar. The artist’s own experience of migration from Mexico to the United States serves as a stage through which he explores the current conditions of his own practice and of the country that he now calls home. He considers how migratory experiences have shaped the nation, and—by extension—how they have come to influence his own work in a city like Miami, where visual culture is inflected by a diversity of diasporas. And through the various pieces on view in the exhibition, Mar asks a compelling question: “How would my life and practice have developed had I stayed in Mexico?”
