BRETT DENNEN — SEE THE WORLD

Today, acclaimed folk-pop singer/songwriter Brett Dennen releases his new album See the World available everywhere now via Mick Music. The album features 10 songs including new single “Paul Newman Daytona Rolex” and the title track, which is currently in the Top 10 at AAA and growing. It is Dennen’s fifth song to do so. Click HERE to buy/stream the album. Click HERE to watch the official lyric video for “Paul Newman Daytona Rolex.”

See the World is a blend of experiences and sometimes seeming contradictions, much like Dennen himself. Peppered in equal parts with shrewd quips and vulnerable admissions, the album is ultimately an exploration of life’s deepest meaning and a call to get out and explore. It is Dennen’s first full length studio album release on Mick Mgmt’s (Leon Bridges, Maggie Rogers, Ray Lamontagne) new frontline label, Mick Music, distributed by DashGo.

On the inspiration behind the album, Dennen shares,

“See the World is about making a choice to experience life and take a stand for things you believe in. We’ve all gone through the pandemic and evaluated our lives; there’s an opportunity now for all of us to take risks, to follow our dreams and intuitions. It’s time to see the commonalities between us. It’s time to take care of the planet as well as each other. We need to make choices about what is meaningful and what is not. All of the songs point back to these things. I hope it inspires people to live well and do good things with their lives.”

On the new lead single, “Paul Newman Daytona Rolex,” Dennen dives into his signature witticisms and sings of a sentimental attachment to a rare watch he owns. The song touches on what we value as humans ourselves with Dennen sharing, “the things you can’t put a price on should be the things you value the most…to me it’s all about self-worth and peace of mind. It’s a funky-catchy little tune that makes me feel good when I sing it.”

Dennen is currently headlining a US summer tour in support of the new album—see upcoming dates HERE and below. He will also take the stage this year at festivals across the country including BeachLife Festival, Ferdinand Folk Festival and Moon Crush.

Interview with Dean Karnazes

Dean Carnazes is a marathon runner known for serious feats of endurance. He recently wrote a book, Runner’s High: A Life in Motion, about running and his experience as a marathon runner. I got the chance to speak with Dean about his marathon career and Runner’s High.

What was your favorite experience while running?

While I was running across the country—from LA to NYC—I got a call from the White House saying that Michelle Obama wanted me to stop in to say hi. Prank call was my first reaction. But it was real. I’ll never forget running down the hallway of the White House and out to the South Lawn to meet with the first lady. She welcomed me with a hug and said, “It’s such an honor to meet you.” I’m not making this up.

What is your favorite part of the marathon experience?

The pain and the struggle. You remember the joyful moments, but the tough moments leave a more indelible imprint.

Do you have a marathon that you particularly liked?

How long is the interview? (laughter) I’ve run hundreds of marathons and each is memorable in it’s own way. I once ran 50 marathons, in all 50 states, in 50 consecutive days. That experience in its totality was quite extraordinary.

Do you have a favorite place to run?

Greece. I’m 100% Greek and Greece is the birthplace of the marathon. It doesn’t get more real than that.

What athletes do you particularly admire?

The back of the packers struggling to reach the finish line before the cutoff. Sure, I admire the elite, but watching the last place finisher is more inspiring.

I’ve been in a 2-week quarantine in a hotel in Sydney in preparation for this crazy 1,000-mile run across Australia, so I’ve been watching a lot of the Tokyo Olympics. In fact, I’ve probably watched more television in the past two weeks than I’ve watched in the past two years!

Are there any Olympic athletes, in the most recent Tokyo Olympics, that you were particularly impressed by?

So many of the athletes impress me. But I think what impressed me the most this Olympics’ was Simone Biles withdrawal because of mental health concerns. She is such a dominant force but she became very human in showing her vulnerability.

How do you feel about energy drinks and other products that may change/enhance athletes’ performance?

Athletes will always seek anything that can provide an edge. So long as it is not a banned substance, I’m okay with it.

What, in your opinion, is your biggest accomplishment as a runner?

The fact that I am still just as passionate about running as I was when I first started. The stoke is still there after all these years.

What was it like to write a book about something you’re so passionate about like running?

To capture my authentic running voice, I do a lot of writing while I run (by dictating into my phone). People say I truthfully capture the essence of running in my writing, and that’s because at a time when I’m experiencing the thoughts, feelings and emotions of a runner I’m taking note. To put that passion into words makes compelling reading.

Are you happy with the way people have spoken about your book thus far?

I got an email from a gentleman this morning who said he had intended to read a couple chapters of my book last night before going to bed. Five hours later he finished the book, he told me. Then, he said, he got up. He just had to go on a run.

Yes, I’m happy with the way people have spoken about my book. That message says it all.

Ethernity Chain Announces Another NFT Collection

Ethernity Chain is proud to announce another unique NFT collection is coming to its ecosystem. This aNFT (Authenticated NFT) collection contains UNRELEASED and never before seen footage of Nas performing a sold-out show of Illmatic with a full orchestra in South Africa on the anniversary of the ending of Apartheid. This drop is made possible with the help of Audio Up and will occur on July 31, 2021.

The connection between NAS and the Apartheid is intriguing. Ending Apartheid in South Africa was a major milestone that coincided with releasing Illmatic in the United States. So having Nas perform on the twentieth-anniversary date of ending Apartheid makes a lot of sense in that regard. Additionally, this cross-over anniversary highlighted a crucial reason why the Apartheid needed to be abolished.

Before abolishing the Apartheid, it would not have been possible for an African-American hip-hop artist to perform in front of a wide audience like the performance that Nas did in 2014. The fact that performance was held signals a crucial change and is part of the broader narrative of how hip hop is a defining force for African-American voices globally. Additionally, it has become the definitive global music genre that tops streaming and sales charts globally, even today.

In 2013, Jared Gutstadt, Founder of Audio Up, had a wild idea to create orchestral tracks based on Illmatic–it would be legendary. Due to a chance meeting between Nas and Jared, they started working on bringing this vision to life. Jared composed the orchestral tracks, partnered with an orchestra, and Nas crushed it by performing his lyrics over the music to a live audience in 2014. This NFT collection is compiled from never-before-seen footage of that performance.

As serendipity would have it, the date of that performance in South Africa fell upon the anniversary of the WE Are end of Apartheid. Coincidentally, the anniversary of the Nas Illmatic album release also falls on this date (April 19).

The charitable beneficiary of this collection is the We Are Family Foundation, founded by legendary musician and producer, Nile Rodgers. The foundation focuses on initiatives that unite the world. These proceeds will benefit WAFF’s Youth to the Front program. Nile has personal experiences as a creator showcasing his craft in South Africa at the end of Apartheid. His song “We Are Family” gave Nelson Mandela hope when he was still imprisoned in South Africa. Nile composed the music for the movie “Coming To America” which was the first movie premier shown to an integrated audience in South Africa. The synergy of Nas and Nile’s creative talents coupled with the power of their music to unite diverse groups of people makes this collection one of great importance for fans as well as a marker for this moment in history. It’s an ode to how far we have come and a reminder of how far we have to go.

BAD CHILD — “ROYALTY REMIX”

Today, singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist known as BAD CHILD reveals the ominous “Royalty Remix” of a previously released track in collaboration with LA-based indie-alterative artist No Love For The Middle Child through Capitol Records. You can listen HERE.

“Royalty” was originally released earlier this year as a track on BAD CHILD’s debut record Free Trial. BAD CHILD recalls on the original track, “‘Royalty’ is a song I want to scare people with, it’s about wanting too much and becoming enveloped in greed. It’s very angry and NIN inspired it heavily.” The intensity of the track is enhanced with the remixed version of the original.

Over the past three years, BAD CHILD has quietly been gathering momentum as an artist with only a handful of releases including his debut EP, Sign Up, a COVERS EP including reinterpretations of songs by Harry Styles, Bill Withers and Soundgarden plus his debut full length record Free Trial. He has quickly become one of the most exciting alt acts to watch; profiled in Complex, HillyDilly, Sidewalk Hustle, Atwood Magazine, Wonderland Magazine and Toronto Star.

His song “Candy,” featuring Ryan Chambers, was included on the soundtrack for the highly publicized Netflix film, To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You. And last year, BAD CHILD’s single “Blood” was featured in a global Apple Watch campaign.

BAD CHILD’s eccentric music and unique vision landed him on the festival circuit in the summer of 2019 playing some of the world’s most prestigious line ups including Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds and Osheaga.

DALLASK × LAUV — “TRY AGAIN”

Today, acclaimed producer/songwriter/artist DallasK unveiled his summery new single, “Try Again,” which features longtime friend and collaborator Lauv on vocals. With a wistful look back and a hopeful eye to the future, the track builds into an infectious, exhilarating plea to rekindle a romance that was perhaps never really over. You can download and stream “Try Again,” which was released today via Astralwerks, HERE. You can watch the lyric video HERE.

“Try Again” continues the collaboration that began when DallasK co-produced and co-wrote Lauv’s 2016 single “Breathe.” DallasK also co-produced and co-wrote “Sad Forever,” a single from Lauv’s 2020 debut album, ~how i’m feeling~, and collaborated on Lauv’s 2020 EP, Without You. The pair co-wrote “Try Again” with Michael Pollack (Lizzo, Zedd, Justin Bieber). In addition to producing, DallasK played all the instruments on the song.

DallasK, who is also known for his work with such artists as Tiësto, Fifth Harmony, BTS, Chromeo and KSHMR, says, “‘Try Again’ is actually the first dance record Lauv and I made together and it was super fun to create a unique record that encompasses both of our styles and influences.”

Lauv added, “Me and Dally made this song a couple years ago and we came back to it during quarantine and now we ready to put ‘er out into the world.”

Like the unforgettable ex in the song, the artists couldn’t resist returning to “Try Again,” a song that dates back to an informal 2016 recording session. Lauv and Michael Pollack joined Dallas at a lake house he’d rented in his hometown of Orlando, FL and there they created over a dozen songs.

“Several months later, Lauv’s artist project started to grow rapidly and he was suddenly on tour with Ed Sheeran and playing all around the world,” recalls DallasK. “We continued to work on his albums but ‘Try Again’ was always a favorite of ours that had gotten seemingly lost in the shuffle.”

After they rediscovered the track last year, Dallas FaceTimed Lauv with an idea for a more dance-focused version. Lauv loved it so much, he immediately re-recorded the vocals.

“Then we finished the record on a trip to Mexico for New Year’s and that’s the version you hear today!” says DallasK.

About DallasK:

Based in Los Angeles, DallasK (Dallas Koehlke) has released a string of acclaimed singles, including “All My Life,” “Self Control,” “I Know” and “Sometimes.” Praising the “relatable story” told on “Sometimes,” Billboard asked, “Does true love ever die? […] ‘Sometimes,’ the ghost of the past never really goes away. That’s the kind of love DallasK, Nicky Romero and XYLO wrote about on their summer heartbreak sing-along.”

DallasK is also known for his collaborations with such artists as Tiësto (“Show Me,” “Your Love”), Hardwell (“Area 51”) and KSHMR (“Burn”). He co-wrote and produced Fifth Harmony’s 5x Platinum single, “Work From Home” feat. Ty Dolla Sign as well as their singles “Down” and “He Like That.” He’s also remixed singles for such artists as Martin Garrix/Bebe Rexha, The Chainsmokers, MGMT, A-Trak/Andrew Wyatt, Skrillex and T.I./Pharrell/Robin Thicke.

Popdust observed, “It’s impossible to escape his influence. From Ariana Grande and Kesha to Lauv, Katy Perry and Fifth Harmony, Koehlke has curated a staggering number of today’s hits, whether behind the scenes or in the production chair.”

About Lauv:

Lauv has quietly and steadily become one of pop’s brightest rising stars. He has released his music completely independently with billions of streams to his name. He has written for some of the biggest stars in the world, performed on late night talk shows, played stadiums opening for Ed Sheeran, and sold out shows in 20+ countries as a headliner. And he did all of this without releasing an album.

That changed in early 2020, with Lauv’s official debut, ~how i’m feeling~. A 21-song tour de force, the project marks a breakthrough, a real moment of arrival, from a young singer/songwriter/producer who Rolling Stone called “Pop’s Up-and-Coming Heartbreak King.” The album released as a Top 20 album in 10 territories, including #9 in UK and #5 in AU, with over 1.5 billion combined streams to date.

Since then, Lauv has released a surprise new EP titled Without You, created during quarantine, and joined forces with rising global pop superstar Conan Gray on the new single “Fake.” Lauv has been open about his own struggles with anxiety and depression and has taken action on the issue with his Blue Boy Foundation, which supports programs that help young people feel more comfortable reaching out for help with mental health.

About Astralwerks:

Now based at the historic Capitol Records Tower in Hollywood, Astralwerks has emerged as a modern, artist-first label and the #1 market share leader for dance/electronic music in the U.S. Combining a scalable, independent and global-thinking ethos with the ability to tap into the resources of a major label has enabled Astralwerks to sign such artists as ILLENIUM, Jonas Blue, Alison Wonderland, EDEN, ZHU and Alesso. Listen/Share All Things Must Pass (2020 Mix)

Recorded and released in the wake of The Beatles’ April 1970 dissolution, George Harrison’s landmark solo album, All Things Must Pass, is a fully realized statement by a bold and audacious artist. Co-produced by Harrison and Phil Spector, the 23-track All Things Must Pass stands tall a half-century later as an epic, ambitious expression of Harrison’s remarkable gift for sheer songcraft, powerful spirituality, and a celebration of both his inimitable individuality and unique camaraderie with his fellow musicians.

One of Harrison’s most beloved songs, Isn’t It A Pity, which features twice on the original 1970 triple album with two uniquely different versions, is presented on the upcoming 50th-anniversary edition of the album in three additional incarnations, which have never been released, the original studio demo and two outtakes. While the demo allows listeners to hear how fully developed the song was melodically in its earliest form, Take 27 provides an exciting insight into Harrison’s creative process and the different arrangements and instrumentation attempted in pursuit of the perfect take. Released today and accompanied by a surrealistic, painterly, animated video, directed by Alan Bibby and Jonny Kofoed of New Zealand-based creative house, Assembly, Isn’t It A Pity (Take 27) is more akin in spirit to Version 2 on the original album with a slightly slower tempo and a simple, but exquisite, arrangement.

Isn’t It A Pity (Take 27) is one of 17 outtakes included alongside the two days worth of studio demos being released for the first time in honor of five decades of All Things Must Pass on the new 50th anniversary Super Deluxe Edition box set, due August 6 via Capitol/UMe

Decades in the making and lovingly crafted by the Harrison family, All Things Must Pass has now been completely remixed from the original tapes for a stunning suite of 50th-anniversary releases that fulfills Harrison’s longtime desire. Executive produced by Dhani Harrison and mixed by triple GRAMMY Award-winning engineer Paul Hicks (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, John Lennon), with the product produced by David Zonshine, the new mix transforms the album by sonically upgrading it – making it sound brighter, fuller and better than ever before. In their perfect 10/10 review, Uncut wrote, This new mix updates his finest work for today, in greater detail than ever before, while still managing to retain the atmosphere that binds these 106 minutes together. Mojo’s equally perfect review raved, The original mix’s misty distance has gone, replaced with clarity and definition that Harrison and Spector didn’t achieve (or seek) the first time around. Previously, one had to, like Spector during the playbacks, turn it up very loud to get the full effect. Not anymore. These mixes come to you.

All Things Must Pass 50th Anniversary Edition will be available in a variety of formats.

Since the 50th-anniversary stereo mix release of the title track to my father’s legendary All Things Must Pass album in 2020, my dear pal Paul Hicks and I have continued to dig through mountains of tapes to restore and present the rest of this newly remixed and expanded edition of the album you now see and hear before you, says Dhani Harrison. Bringing greater sonic clarity to this record was always one of my father’s wishes and it was something we were working on together right up until he passed in 2001. Now, 20 years later, with the help of new technology and the extensive work of Paul Hicks we have realized this wish and present to you this very special 50th Anniversary release of perhaps his greatest work of art. Every wish will be fulfilled.

Hailed by Rolling Stone as the War and Peace of rock and roll and an intensely personal statement and a grandiose gesture, All Things Must Pass was met by unanimous critical acclaim and spectacular commercial success, spending seven weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Top LPs chart and eight weeks atop the UK’s official albums chart (though chart records until 2006 mistakenly stated that it had peaked at #4). Currently certified 6x platinum by the RIAA, All Things Must Pass later received a 1972 GRAMMY Award nomination for Album of the Year, while My Sweet Lord earned a GRAMMY nod for Record of the Year. What Is Life, the album’s second single, also became an international hit, reaching the top 10 in the US and Canada as well as #1 in Australia and Switzerland.

All Things Must Pass has only grown in influence and stature in the half-century since its initial release, including induction in the GRAMMY Hall of Fame and inclusion on The Times of London’s The 100 Best Albums of All Time and Rolling Stone’s 2020 listing of The Top 500 Albums of All Time. Pitchfork declared it to have changed the terms of what an album could be.

Toosii, who has surpassed one billion combined global streams across all of his songs to date, gave a powerful performance at last week’s Rolling Loud Festival. Today, he shared his electrifying new single, spin music Ft. Fivio Foreign, which is the closing track on The Manifestation. The official video, also released today, mirrors the song’s kinetic energy, jumping between scenes of ATVs, parties and bedrooms as Toosii and Fivio perform, all rendered with a dizzying array of lenses, camera angles and special effects. Jerami Lam, who helmed the video for Fivio’s Jumpin, directed. View HERE.

Brooklyn-based rapper/songwriter Fivio Foreign, known for such hits as Big Drip (and the Gold-certified remix featuring Quavo and Lil Baby), Unruly and Trust, has also collaborated recently with Lil Tjay, Polo G, Russ Millions and Tion Wayne, among others.

Toosii will launch the Thank You For Believing tour, his first-ever U.S. headline outing, in the fall. Tickets are on sale HERE but are going quickly with shows in New York City, Boston and Chicago already sold out. A November 6 date has been added in Cleveland and the November 22 show in Atlanta has been moved to a larger venue, due to the demand for tickets. Toosii will join Gucci Mane & Friends at Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi on August 28 and perform at upcoming festivals such as Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits and Rolling Loud LA.

Other standout tracks on Thank You For Believing (The Manifestation) include the cinematic, classically-influenced let me know ft. Hotboii, the poignant mercedez pt 2, which finds Toosii reflected on the tragic character introduced on mercedez from 2020’s Platinum Heart, and heart cold. Uproxx included heart cold in its round-up of All The Best New Music From This Week upon its release earlier this month. Brooklyn Vegan said, [Toosii’s] croon sounds great on this catchy, melancholic song. Okayplayer hailed the accompanying visual as one of the Best Rap Videos of the Week.

Released on May 7, 2021, Thank You For Believing earned praise from tastemakers like The Fader, Complex, and The Source. XXL named Toosii among their esteemed 2021 Freshman Class and hailed 55’ (feat. Latto) as one of the Best Hip-Hop Songs of 2021. HotNewHipHop observed, He’s one of the strongest young faces rising in the rap game, impressing the masses with his emotional melodies and his raw storytelling. VMAN declared, Rising artist Toosii is taking over the rap universe.

With a gift for drenching real lyrics in rich emotion, Toosii is one of rap’s most relatable new stars. The Syracuse-born, Raleigh-based artist has captured the public’s imagination, offering honest tales of street life and lost love, among other moving themes that have vaulted him from a lost kid, surrounded by tragedy, to a national sensation.

Thank You For Believing (The Manifestation) is a victory lap of sorts, but rest assured, Toosii is showing no signs of slowing down. He grinds like he’s up next, but everyone who’s been paying attention knows he’s already arrived.
