Reebok 40th Anniversary Alien Stomper

Forty years after Alien(1979introduced Earth to the mother of all sci-fi nightmares, Reebok is rewinding the story back to the 1970s for an upgraded unisex prototype edition of the iconic ‘Alien Stomper’ sneaker boots. Originally appearing in Aliens (1986) as the signature ass-kicking footwear of franchise hero Ellen Ripley, the new 40 Anniversary Alien Stomper draws inspiration from the original Alien film to create the most series-authentic Alien Stomper yet.

The 40 Anniversary Alien Stomper is an upgraded take on the classic 1986 silhouette. The new edition now features premium-aged leather construction, a material innovation that enhances the sneaker’s tactile experience while also lending it a vintage “from the vaults” appearance.

Arriving in a cream-white colorway with contrasting blood-red and anthracite detailing, the unisex sneaker is oozing with minute design touches and Easter eggs for die-hard fans. Those details include references to a host of pre-production designs and logos that were never actually used in the film’s final production. making them true prototypes in both our universe and the universe of Alien.  For example, eagle-eyed fans will take special notice of an ultra-rare deviant version of the logo used by the Alienfranchise’s infamous “Weyland-Yutani” corporation, which drops the “D” to read just “Weylan-Yutani”.

The Stomper’s new packaging is just as lovingly detailed as the sneaker itself. Reebok spared little expense in researching and creating materials for the packaging, which will arrive with a swarm of Alien inuniverse goodies to help maximize the immersion factor. The full loadout includes:

A certificate of authenticity, backed by the good name of the Weylan-Yutani corporation

Custom dust bags for protecting your stompers from hostile forces

An official ‘Bug Stomping’ field guide

Three unique hang tags, including the alternate Weylan-Yutani logo and an official Alien 40Anniversary badge

The sneaker will arrive in a triangular prism-shaped “Space Fleet Box”, a retro-future design that imagines what a 22 century Reebok box would look like through the eyes of 1979-era sci-fi design.

The 40 Anniversary Alien Stomper is set for release on Alien Day, April 26, 2019. The unisex sneaker retails for $175 and will be available at www.Reebok.com/us/alien_stomper

Rice U. Device Would Help Fix Fractured Bones

Threading a needle is hard, but at least you can see it. Think about how challenging it must be to thread a screw through a rod inside a bone in someone’s leg.

Rice University seniors at the Brown School of Engineering set out to help doctors simplify the process of repairing fractured long bones in an arm or leg by inventing a mechanism that uses magnets to set things right.

The students who call themselves Drill Team Six chose the project pitched by Rice alumnus Dr. Ashvin Dewan, an orthopedic surgeon at Houston Methodist Hospital, to simplify a procedure by which titanium rods are placed inside broken bones to make them functional once more. For its efforts, the team won the top prize, the Excellence in Engineering Award, at the school’s annual

Engineering Design Showcase.

The student team — bioengineering majors Babs Ogunbanwo, Takanori Iida, Byung-UK Kang and Hannah Jackson and mechanical engineering majors Will Yarinsky and Ian Frankel — learned from Dewan that surgeons require many X-rays to locate pre-drilled 5 millimeter holes in the rod. The holes allow them to secure the rod to the bone fragments and hold them together.

The surgery typically requires doctors to insert the long rod with a guide wire inside into the end of the bone, drilling through marrow to align the fractured fragments. With that done, they depend on X-rays, their experience and, if necessary, a bit of trial and error to drill long surgical screws through one side of the bone, thread it through the rod and secure it to the other side.

“We want to reduce the amount of X-rays, the surgeon’s time, the operating room time, the setup time, everything,” Yarinsky said.

The Rice team would make the wire adjacent to the holes magnetic, because neither skin nor bone hinder a magnetic field

“That way, the magnets hold their position and we can do the location process,” Frankel said. “Once we’ve found them and secured the rod, we remove the wire and the magnets with it.”

The exterior mechanism is a brace that can be securely attached to the arm or leg with Velcro. A mounted sensor can then be moved along the stiff, 3D-printed carbon-fiber rods or around the limb until it locates the magnet. Then, the angle of the sensor can be adjusted. As each of the three degrees of freedom come into alignment with the target, a “virtual LED” lights up on a graphic display wired to the sensor. Then, the sensor is removed and a drill keyed to the mechanism inserted.

“We do the angular part because the rod is not in the center of the leg, and the hole is not necessarily perpendicular to the surface,” Yarinsky said. “The rod is about 10 to 20 millimeters thick and has a hole on one side and a hole on the other. We don’t want to hit the first hole at an angle where we miss the second

and don’t go all the way through.”

Working at Rice’s Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen (OEDK), the team tested its device on a mannequin leg and what it called a “wooden leg,” a frame that allowed for mounting the rod with its magnetized wire and checking the accuracy of their system.

Before it can be used by clinicians, the team said the device will require Food and Drug Administration approval.

“I’m very impressed with what the team put together,” said Dewan, who earned a bioengineering degree at Rice in 2005. “Where we ended up is completely different from what we imagined, but kudos to these guys. They went through many different proposals and ideas and ended up running with the one that seemed most promising.”

Having been through the senior capstone process at Rice himself, Dewan was particularly impressed with how the program has grown.

“The OEDK got off the ground a few years after I graduated, and at that point, senior design projects were isolated to individual projects,” Dewan said. “I didn’t work with mechanical or other engineering disciplines.

“I love the way they have a multidisciplinary approach to tackling problems,” he said.  “I think it’s much more of a real-world experience for them.”

Sabia Abidi, a lecturer in bioengineering, served as the team’s adviser, and it was sponsored by Chuck and Sharon Fox.

Brand new Chris Lastovicka remix album entitled ‘Fortune Has Turned (Remixed)’

Watch new music video for “The End of Tyranny (Remixed)” here.

Watch the video for The 7th Chapter of Job (Remixed) here.

Fortune Has Turned (Remixed)” traces the journey from deep suffering to the fullness and freedom of the heart. It is a quest to find the Self. I asked Jeremy Allom to take the original, raw recordings for this album and bring out their vitality with his own powerful, creative stamp.

“When I was thinking about who I’d like to remix my album, I thought about my favorite album, Massive Attack’s “Blue Lines”. I wondered if I would be able to even get Jeremy Allom, who mixed that album. I did, and it has been an incredible experience working with him and getting to know him. When I looked for a mastering engineer, I wanted to get someone who would understand the sonic imperfections of the recordings and how I felt they mirrored the rough experience of seeking the Self. I chose iconic mastering engineer Emily Lazar because of her early background in creative writing, and her drive to tell the story of an album through her mastering work,” says Lastovicka.

Track List

  1. The 7th Chapter of Job
  2. Abraxas
  3. The Tender Ones
  4. Shanti
  5. The End of Tyranny

“There is no denying Lastovicka’s skill… There is a real sense of power and refined craft.” – Fanfare Magazine

“Lastovicka’s music is formidable stuff, dark and tempestuous — both terrifying and beautiful.” – Chronogram Magazine

On a nightly basis, she’s bringing her debut, INNER MONOLOGUE PART I, to life on stage—and bringing fans closer than ever.

GRAMMY® Award-nominated singer and songwriter Julia Michaels has transformed the pop music landscape not only from behind-the-scenes as one of the most in-demand songwriters, but in the spotlight as a solo artist as well. Her rapid rise can be attributed to identifiable honesty in every lyric, as exemplified in her triple-platinum selling debut single “Issues”.  In 2018, she garnered GRAMMY® Awards nominations in the categories of “Best New Artist” and “Song of the Year” for “Issues,” which amassed nearly 2 billion streams worldwide. Continuing that success, “Issues” notably became “the top-selling debut single by an artist in 2017,” and placed as the only solo female composition on Variety’s “30 Most Consumed Songs of 2017.”

As a songwriter, MICHAELS has co-written 21 titles that have charted on the Billboard Hot 100, eleven of which have hit the Top 40, including “Issues.”  Those songwriting credits include smashes like Justin Bieber’s “Sorry,” Selena Gomez’s “Good for You” [feat. A$AP Rocky] & “Hands To Myself,” and Hailee Steinfeld’s “Love Myself.”  She’s also written titles for Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Linkin Park, Ed Sheeran, John Legend, P!NK, Maroon 5, Jessie Ware, Janelle Monae, Keith Urban, Shawn Mendes and more.

Since her debut as a solo artist, MICHAELS has built an enviable touring resume, joining artists like Maroon 5, Keith Urban, Shawn Mendes, Niall Horan, and P!NK- who she is currently touring the U.S. with through May 2019, around the globe.

MICHAELS most recently surprised fans with the release of INNER MONOLOGUE PART I.  Upon arrival, the EP debuted at #1 on the iTunes Pop Albums Chart and #5 Overall iTunes Albums Chart. The success of the EP prompted MICHAELS first-ever headline tour, “The Inner Monologue Tour,” which has sold out dates across the country.
