Travis Scott x McDonald’s

By Hannah DiPilato

Hip Hop fans everywhere have been buzzing about Travis Scott’s recent collaboration with McDonald’s that includes both a meal and special merchandise.

The “Travis Scott Meal” is the artist’s go-to McDonald’s order: a quarter pounder with lettuce and bacon, a medium fry, a sprite, and barbecue sauce. The meal costs $6 and is available for dine-in, carry-out, and at the drive-thru. Although this is not an unusual order, fans have been rushing to get the superstars meal of choice.

For those that want the McDonald’s kick without the calories, Scott released an extensive line of McDonald’s x Cactus Jack merchandise. The merch, available on Scott’s website, channels the energy of Scott’s hip hop culture and the classic love for McDonald’s that fans everywhere have in common.

Fans can choose from a variety of clothing such as t-shirts, hoodies, and pants, all of which have a unique Cactus Jack and McDonald’s design. Some clothing pieces display a more subtle love for McDonald’s like a simple McDonald’s logo, while others illustrate a Travis Scott figurine reining over a quarter pounder meal.

For fans that want to display their love for Cactus Jack and McDonald’s in other ways, Scott also dropped accessories and decorations. This includes a variety of rugs, a Cactus Pack blanket, and the McNugget body pillow that has gained a lot of popularity on social media.

This is the first celebrity collaboration McDonald’s has done since 1992 when the company partnered with Michael Jordan. McDonald’s is hoping this celebrity collaboration will boost their sales that are down from the previous year by thirty percent. McDonald’s CEO, Chris Kempczinski, brushed this loss off as a result of the pandemic.

In the announcement of the collaboration made by McDonald’s, Scott explained he “couldn’t be more excited to bring the collaboration to life.” He also expressed how the collaboration is “bringing together two iconic worlds.”

In the same announcement, McDonald’s U.S. Chief Marketing officer Morgan Flatley said “everyone has a favorite McDonald’s meal, no matter who you are.” He also mentioned that the company is “excited to bring the Travis Scott Meal to a McDonald’s near you.”

Scott promoted the collaboration on both his Instagram and Twitter accounts. He included a photo in the drive-thru window flashing a McDonald’s bag and a bedazzled chain, as well as a promotional video featuring an explanation of his order with his classic Travis Scott autotune.

The excitement began on September third when McDonald’s tweeted a cactus and hamburger emoji hinting at a collaboration. Travis then retweeted this tweet with “CACTUS JACK FOR MCDONALD’S” and stimulated excitement within his fanbase.

This promotion will be available until October 4th, but merchandise could be gone sooner. This merchandise channels the nostalgia of McDonald’s from the past while still including the bold energy that is Travis Scott. Whether you’re more of a hip-hop fan or a McDonald’s regular, the extensive merchandise page will give everyone something to choose from. To put it simply, and in the words of Travis Scott, “It’s Lit.”

Children of the Atom January Drop

The mystery surrounding CHILDREN OF THE ATOM will finally be answered when the previously announced series by writer Vita Ayala and artist Bernard Chang debuts this January. As the latest title to explore the new era of mutantkind following Jonathan Hickman’s House of X, CHILDREN OF THE ATOM will introduce a brand-new team of young X-Men characters. Inspired by their favorite mutants, these gifted youngsters will keep both the X-Men and fans guessing about who they are and where they came from. More than just mere sidekicks, the cast of CHILDREN OF THE ATOM will have a major impact on the world of the X-Men when they burst onto the scene next year!

“I have never known a world without mutants and the X-Men, and to be able to create characters that would become part of the canon is WILD,” Ayala said when the book was first announced. “What makes the new cast special to me is that they are reflective of a lot of people I know who look up to what the X-Men stand for, and have taken it upon themselves to further those ideals. These kids are exactly the kids who, in real life, have posters of Storm and Wolverine in their rooms, who grew up seeing them as heroes and want to live up to that.”

Julie Bergan – Hard Feelings: Ventricle II

LISTEN HERE

Julie Bergan’s ‘Hard Feelings’ project sees the Norwegian pop sensation make a global impression. Its tracks have already accumulated over 35 million streams as Julie is now approaching 5 million monthly listeners at Spotify. Meanwhile, her profile has been boosted by fresh support at tastemaker media. Today Julie continues her upward trajectory with the release of her EP, Hard Feelings: Ventricle II’ featuring the standout single ‘One Touch’.

Powered by Julie’s explosive vocal range and boundless charisma, ‘One Touch’ demonstrates exactly why she’s destined for global star status. It’s a fiery cocktail of arena-ready alt-pop dynamics and EDM energy, topped with some throwback ‘80s flavor. It’s also as relatable as we’ve come to expect from Julie, as it expresses the rush and excitement of a new relationship. The single is co-written by Julie Bergan together with fellow Norwegian singer/songwriter Dagny and produced by Rat City.

Julie commented: “The two volumes of ‘Hard Feelings’ are a collection of all the feels I’ve had over the last year. It goes from being blessed with a broken heart to just wanting to be out there on the dance floor and kiss somebody. I have worked a lot on allowing myself to actually get to know my own feelings and through that process I created these two EPs. In different ways they both describe what has been going on lately. The good and the bad. In one moment you feel low, alone and heartbroken, and in the next one you feel free, strong and it’s like you’re coming up for air. That is totally okay and absolutely normal, and I guess it’s just what life is about. Also, as a female in 2020 I really hope I can inspire other girls out there to speak their mind, be confident and believe in themselves. We’ve been oppressed and underestimated for way too long. Let’s be girls who support girls!”

Initially inspired by icons such as Rihanna, Destiny’s Child and Robyn, Julie Bergan has already played shows as guest to both Dua Lipa and Justin Bieber. Still just 26-years-old, she’s already packed a lot into her career. Her early single ‘Arigato’ went to #1 in Norway, as it earned her Breakthrough Artist of the Year from the Norwegian songwriters’ association NOPA and a Spellemann (the Norwegian Grammy / BRIT equivalent) nomination for Song of the Year.

A feature on K-391 feat. Alan Walker’s global smash ‘Ignite’ continued her rise. Returning to #1 in Norway, its success saw her perform all over the world, ranging from a huge Coachella set to EDC Japan. She built on that with her double-Platinum debut album ‘Turn On The Lights’ in 2018 and the double-Platinum single ‘STFU’ which won Song of the Year at the NRJ Awards.

In addition to the two-part ‘Hard Feelings’ project, Julie has also impacted with some major features this year: ‘Get To Know Me First’ with Molly Hammar and AWA; ‘Don’t You Wanna Play?’ with ‘Kiss Somebody’ collaborators SEEB; ‘Outline’ with Crazy Cousinz; and ‘Outta My Head’ with Love Harder.

‘Hard Feelings: Ventricle II’ Tracklist

  1. ‘One Touch’
  2. ‘Kiss Somebody’
  3. ‘Commando’
  4. ‘All Of Them’

Remembering 9/11

By Elle Grant

For any American, 9/11 marks an essential day of reflection and remembrance. September 11, 2020 marks the nineteenth anniversary of the historic terrorist attacks that rocked New York City, shocking the United States and the world.

19 years ago, four passenger jets were hijacked by the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda in an effort to strike at American symbols. One was flown into the Pentagon Military Headquarters in Washington D.C. Another two, most remembered of the four, were flown into the two towers of the World Trade Center in New York City as Manhattan looked on in horror. A fourth, upon hearing news of the other hijackings, realized their plane was also under attack and chose to fight back, resulting in their plane plunging into a Pennsylvania field. In sum, roughly 3,000 lives were loss, with 2,700 of them being in New York City. The toll of lives and on the psyche of Americans was hitherto unimaginable, as was the ensuing consequences including the now infamous War on Terror.

The victims of 9/11 have been commemorated in numerous ways across the country, including at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum opened on the tenth anniversary of the attacks. The memorial is located where the Twin Towers formerly stood, now marked with design features such as man-made waterfalls, a forest of white oak trees, and the inscribed names of the victims as part of the memorial. This long-awaited memorial site has since been part of the commemorations each year, with 2020 being no exception. Visitors such as Vice President Pence and Democratic nominee for president Joseph Biden were among the attendees today.

New York is especially reflective this year as the anniversary of 9/11 comes during the COVID-19 pandemic, of which the city was an early epicenter, resulting in thousands of lives lost. Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was thrust onto the national stage following the New York outbreak, said “This year it is especially important that we all appreciate and commemorate 9/11, the lives lost and the heroism displayed ‎as New Yorkers are once again called upon to face a common enemy.” In NYC, the current death count due to coronavirus is placed at 23,000. This year, at the somber moments held at the September 11 memorial in Manhattan, those paying their respects wore face masks while honoring the dead, a new feature in remembering 9/11. New York remains a fixture of American culture, with eyes turned towards them during the tragedy of 9/11, as well as the current tragedy of coronavirus.

Another way victim’s families, including those killed and affected during rescue efforts, is the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, currently authorized through 2090 and worth billions of dollars. “Our nation owes each of you a profound debt that no words or deeds will ever repay,” President Trump said during the bill signing ceremony. “But we can, and we will keep our nation’s promise to you.” Certainly, monetary efforts are no replacements for the lives loss and the impacts made, but it represents Congress’ efforts to assist those left in the wake of the tragic attacks.

Rolls-Royce Reveals New Ghost

By Cassandra Yany

Rolls-Royce revealed the design for its New Ghost on Tuesday. CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös described the Ghost as “the most technologically advanced Rolls-Royce yet.” The first Goodwood Ghost, released in 2009, was the company’s most successful product in its 116-year history.

The automobile company released the launch film in which Müller-Ötvös shares the importance of refinement and simplicity in producing the new Ghost. The six-minute video showcases the appearance of the car, highlighting the small, unique details. Müller-Ötvös said that a client-first approach played a huge role in the car’s conception.

A team of specialists, engineers and craftspeople used research of Ghost clients’ interests, opinions and taste patterns to develop a new model that meets the preferences of these drivers. The style of the Ghost was created using the ‘Post Opulence’ philosophy, which designer Henry Cloke says is “about simplicity. [It’s] about something that doesn’t shout at you, but it whispers.”

The new Ghost has been termed “future-focused with a minimal aesthetic.” Engineers worked to combine dynamic highlights from the portfolio of numerous types of cars into one vehicle. It was formulated to remove as much energy transfer as possible from the road into the body of the car to create a smooth ride. The car was built with sound absorbing materials to reduce the level of noise inside the car. A soft undertone was created for the driver and passengers to hear a single, subtle note while on the road. Media screens fold out from behind the driver’s and passenger’s seats, providing entertainment for those sitting in the back seats.

Behind the grill of the car are lights that provide a subtle glow below the Rolls-Royce logo, between the “laser” headlights. The interior contains wood accents, and was intended to promote a relaxing and serene driving experience. The dashboard features hundreds of illuminated stars surrounding the Ghost nameplate, and the headliner is adorned with star-like lights.

The new Ghost has all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering, and was constructed to drive easy, regardless of road conditions. It was built on Rolls-Royce aluminum spaceframe architecture, which was adapted to make way for advances in this model. The Planar system increases agility through three elements:

  • The Wishbone Damper unit above the front suspension assembly creates a secure and effortless ride.
  • The Flagbearer system uses cameras to read the road and prepare the suspension system for any upcoming changes in the road surface.
  • Last, the Satellite Aided Transmission uses GPS data to pre-select the optimum gear for approaching corners.

The new Ghost is equipped with a 6.75-litre, twin-turbo V12 engine. The doors open and close electrically for an easy entrance and exit. Engineering Lead, Jonathan Simms, said the team “pushed [their] architecture even further and created a car even more dynamic, even more luxurious and, most of all, even more effortlessly usable.”

Additionally, Rolls-Royce released a podcast series explaining the aesthetic and engineering of the new Ghost. The sleek, luxury car is expected to retail around $322,500, with the first deliveries anticipated for early next year.

NBA Protests

by Justin Lyons

The clock struck 4:05 p.m. on Aug 26 in Orlando, and neither the Magic nor the Bucks were on the court for the tip-off of the fifth game of their playoff series.

Playing their home games just 40 miles from Kenosha, Wisconsin, it’s safe to say that the shooting of Jacob Blake by Kenosha police literally hit close to home for the Bucks players.

The Orlando Magic originally took the court for their game, but they decided to leave when it appeared the Bucks weren’t coming. That court was now empty aside from the NBA logos, the regulation markings and “Black Lives Matter” in bold text across the side closest to the scorer’s table.

Then, the tweet from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski came at 4:13 p.m. Orlando time saying that the Bucks officially decided to boycott the fifth game of the series.

News broke later that the Rockets, Thunder, Trail Blazers and Lakers all decided to boycott their games, as well, in a show of unity.

It was the spark that started the fire, as basketball wouldn’t be played again until Aug. 29.

Bucks guard George Hill was one of the most outspoken players on the team regarding the shooting of Jacob Blake, making it very clear that he couldn’t continue to play basketball to distract from the reality of what’s happening in the United States.

The Brewers, the Milwaukee baseball team that plays its home games just a short drive from where the Bucks play, also decided to cancel their Aug. 26 game against the Reds.

Brewers star Christian Yelich said it was a unanimous decision from the team to not play.

“I think the Bucks spearheaded it for us,” Yelich said. “They started the discussion. It gave us a conversation to have. It was eye-opening for us, and we felt like it was the right thing to do.”

The NHL also joined in the protests, postponing games Aug. 27 and Aug. 28.

Later on the night of Aug. 26, Shams Charania reported via Twitter that the Lakers and Clippers, both of which are still contenders for the title, voted to boycott the rest of the season. LeBron James reportedly led the movement to cancel the season, which is no surprise given his history of fighting for social justice.

Giannis Antetokounmpo said the Bucks were able to get in contact with Blake’s father very quickly. Blake’s father was moved to tears by the gesture.

According to an article from ESPN, Antetokounmpo said, “Obviously, it’s gonna be games that you come in and score 30, 35, 50 or whatever the case might be, but that you’re going to remember. The way we felt, we’re going to remember the way we felt for the rest of our lives.”

The Bucks were eliminated from the playoffs Tuesday, which begs the question of how they will respond. Hill expressed disappointment that he had to be in the Orlando bubble instead of fighting for justice, so it should be interesting to see where the Bucks go from here.

Eyes are also shifting to the NFL, which starts Thursday. The entire nation will have its eyes on protests and social justice initiatives from a league that has been just as outspoken as the NBA.

Supergroup Spillage Village released new single “Baptize” late last night alongside the announcement that new album, Spilligion, on September 25th. “Baptize” is another taste of what fans and critics can come to expect from the album that has been teased since the release of “End of Daze.”
Continuing the sombre yet hopeful tone set with the first track, “Baptize” spotlights vocals from J.I.D and EARTHGANG; proving why they have come to be some of Atlanta’s most prized musical possessions. Christo, Hollywood JB and OLU of EARTHGANG produced the beat. Continuing the excitement, a video for the song dropped today featuring the three artists leading congregations in a Baptist church and one nestled in the woods — all while decked out in Pyer Moss. To watch the video, visit: https://youtu.be/Qcuk4LLRatk
The group composed of J.I.D, EarthGang, 6lack, Mereba, Jurdan Bryant, Hollywood JB and Benji. recorded Spilligion in Atlanta during (and largely as a solace for) the pandemic, and yet found the themes ringing true during a civil uprising that has continued to divide the country. They say it takes a village to raise a child and Spillage Village aims to borrow from this adage to inspire stories aimed at rebuilding and revolutionizing our communities for the future. Spilligion is available for pre-order now, CLICK HERE, fans that do so will receive the new track as an instant grat.

About Spillage Village —

Born out of block parties, college dorm rooms and late night house sessions, Spillage Village was founded by Atlanta duo EARTHGANG and rapper J.I.D and were then joined by producer Hollywood JB and artist Jurdan Bryant. The quintet self-released their first collaborative project, Bears Like This (2014) to a warm reception gathering a groundswell of support from peers. Soon after singer Mereba and rapper 6lack joined the group and released their second critically acclaimed effort, Bears Like This Too (2015) with press dubbing it “a definitive statement from one of Atlanta’s most musically vibrant posses” (VICE/Noisey).

Keeping it’s momentum, the following year Spillage Village made waves again with Bears Like This Too Much (2016). The EP would be a turning point for many of the artists in the group who’s solo careers began to take off,  6lack’s debuted his Free 6lack project (Interscope, 2016) and EARTHGANG and J.I.D signed to Dreamville Records (Interscope). OLU from EARTHGANG would say that the three “Bear” EPs acted like “checkpoints and markers in time” chronicling the rise of the musical mavericks. Almost four years later, with many a sold out international tours, Grammy nominations and personal projects, Spillage Village is back to deliver soul-serving music.
