Playing off Prince, “…Like its 1999” also delivers with a tasty WhistlePig 10 Year Rye, stirred with Vermouth Royale and Angostura bitters, topped with a platinum leaf Luxardo Maraschino cherry. Rounding out the offerings, the dreamy Little Silver is certain to be a showstopper, combining Patron Rocca Reposado Tequila, Cointreau Noir and garden fresh lime, served up with a platinum Maldon salt rim. $50.

MIYAGI, Japan, 360 MAGAZINE, Geoffrey Weill

JAPAN’S MIYAGI PREFECTURE

The “Land of Contrasts” Is the Gateway to the Lesser-Known Tohoku Region

Dubbed the “Land of Contrasts,” Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture is characterized by its bustling capital city of Sendai, the picturesque islands of Matsushima Bay, the coastal landscape and world-class seafood of Sanriku, the rice fields and vibrant wetlands of northern Miyagi, and the iconic crater lake, “snow monsters” and Fox Village at Mount Zao.

Known as the gateway to the lesser-known northern Japanese region of Tohoku, Miyagi is easily accessible via 90-minute bullet train ride from Tokyo, and by regular direct flights from all major Japanese cities, as well as from Seoul, Shanghai and Taipei. The highlights of this largely undiscovered corner of Japan include:

MATSUSHIMA BAY

A quick day trip from Sendai, the Matsushima Bay area is renowned for its legendary temples, coastal landscapes and islands, and delicious local seafood. At the very heart of the region is the 400-year-old Zuiganji Temple, which was built as the family temple of the founder of Sendai and has been designated a National Treasure. From there, travelers can explore the traditional Japanese gardens at Entsuin Temple, visit sake breweries and sample matcha at a local tea house. And of course, the main draw of Matsushima Bay are the 260 pine tree-topped islands, accessible by foot or boat, that dot the bay. And to top it all off, travelers can taste their way around the Shiogama Fish Market, just a short car ride away from Matsushima Bay (where they can even make their own sushi bowl or grill their own seafood).

SENDAI

The capital of Miyagi Prefecture and the largest city in the entire Tohoku region, Sendai is a major transit hub for the region, accessible by air, ferry, train and bus. The “City of Trees,” as it is known, is thus the starting point for most journeys throughout Miyagi and the Tohoku region at large. Though a busy metropolis, Sendai is known as much for its access to nature and its hiking, camping and skiing as it is for its world-class restaurants, shopping and nightlife. And two of the area’s most historic hot springs (or onsen) are just on the city’s outskirts, at Akiu and Sakunami.

MOUNT ZAO

One of Japan’s most magnificent natural areas, the Zao region of southern Miyagi Prefecture is most famous for its iconic Mount Zao, featuring a colorful crater lake at its summit and, in wintertime, the mysterious “snow monsters” (the strange phenomenon created when freezing cold fronts from Siberia transform the mountain’s massive fir trees into snow- and ice- covered creatures). But beyond the famed deep-powder slopes of the mountain, the Zao area offers a wealth of excursions in other seasons, including immersion in samurai culture at Shiroishi Castle, the unique experience of communing with furry creatures at Fox Village, viewing thousands of cherry trees along the Shiroishi River at Hitome Senbon Zakura in springtime, and hiking and mountain biking through the fiery fall foliage in the autumn months.

SANRIKU COAST

Characterized by dramatic cliffs, hidden coves and abundant marine life, the Sanriku Coast has become a sought-after destination for seafood lovers and adventure travelers. Particular areas of interest include the utterly unique Cat Island Tashirojima and the holy island of Kinkasan, home to the Koganeyama Shrine, where wild deer roam freely and are regarded as messengers of the gods by Shinto priests. The Sanriku Coast is also considered a symbol of recovery, as the area suffered heavy damage in the 2011 tsunami. Each town along the coast has established memorials and museums to commemorate the disaster – one of the most affecting of which is the former Onagawa Police Station, an overturned ruin of a building that was torn from its foundation and dragged onto a nearby boat pier, where it still stands as a memorial.

NORTHERN MIYAGI

A vibrantly colored and naturally diverse destination year-round, the area of northern Miyagi is known for its natural wetlands, which fill with thousands of migratory geese and swans during wintertime and then dry up and are carpeted by fields of wild lotus flowers in summertime. And at Mount Kurikoma in the western part of the region, avid hikers are drawn to its fields of alpine wildflowers, dramatic autumn foliage and unkai (sea of clouds).

Not only did he lend his voice to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Almost Like Praying” benefit single, but he also began architecting a sharp and soulful signature take on contemporary music. He teamed up with producer Will Wells [Logic, Pentatonix] for The Freedom EP, which garnered acclaim from Billboard and many others.

Ramos recently wrapped the lead in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s highly-anticipated ‘In the Heights’ movie directed by Jon M. Chu for Warner Bros to be released in June 2020.

Most recently, he appeared in the Academy Award-winning film A Star Is Born, directed by Bradley Cooper and starring Lady Gaga where he played ‘Ally’s’ (GaGa) best friend and the critically-acclaimed Netflix series She’s Gotta Have Itcreated by Spike Lee, based on his 1986 film.

This summer, Ramos made his Republic Records debut with the release of “Dear Diary.” A heartening confessional, “Dear Diary” sets the tone and marks the introduction to his forthcoming full-length album “The Good & The Bad.”

Black Line Crazy Launches New Limited Edition Art Bags Line

Mary van de Wiel (aka Van), founder of Black Line Crazy (BLC), has announced the launch of her line of the same name, which includes limited edition bags and one-of-a-kind, hand-woven rugs and wall hangings featuring her paintings. Additionally, van de Wiel’s work was selected for an installation on Avenue of the Americas in New York City by And Partners which acts as ‘co-curators’ on behalf of its clients.

A former chief creative officer of her own award-winning branding agency with offices in New York and Sydney, Australia, van de Wiel has worked with countless Fortune 500 clients. At the same time, she realized she relished walking outside the line with her bold black and white graphic designs born from her love of doodling. One day in the middle of Mexico, van de Wiel picked up a brush and can of black house paint and started painting murals, collages and gallery windows—floor to ceiling. In 2015, she had her first successful exhibition at the Saint Cloche Gallery in Sydney. A year later, she was invited to be part of a group show at Galeria Manuk in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Later moving to Mexico, van de Wiel started to create messenger bags that feature her paintings and signature and expanded her line to currently include totes and zippered sleeves as well as a hand-woven collection of rugs and wall hangings. Anyone purchasing items from her line instantly becomes a collector of a one-of-a-kind or limited edition piece which makes the work truly unique.

“I believe that art has a pulse and belongs in everyday life—not just on walls,” said Mary van de Wiel, founder of BLC. “It’s designed to be worn, carried and integrated with the personality of the owner as a means of self-expression.”

The new Black Line Crazy line can be viewed here.

About Black Line Crazy

BLC Collections, both form and function, are an invitation to walk outside the line. It’s art at the intersection of fashion, home and everyday life. Because sustainability is a must, BLC works very closely with makers and artisans, researching organizations that repurpose vinyl for a circular economy, rather than sending it to landfill. Additionally, BLC purposely chose master weavers who source their 100% wool from the state of Guanajuato—from a small group of farmers that have been tending to their animals’ welfare and the environment for decades. Canine Tips: When to Bring Your Dog to the Vet

Many new dog owners are unsure about how often they should bring their dog to the vet. You should take your dog to the vet when required, if you are unsure, you can speak to the veterinarian and ask them for advice on the subject. Every dog needs access to a safe home, toys, healthy food, exercise and a lot of love and attention. In addition, they require trips to the local vet for health checks, vaccinations and other services.

Physical Health & Dental Checks

Bringing your dog to the vet for general health checks and dental checks is important. An animal cannot tell you when they are sick, so you must have them checked to ensure they are in good health. Dogs are good at hiding their ailments, so if you think something is off, you should have them assessed by a professional.

The vet will perform a general check to see if your dog is physically fit and healthy, tell examine all of the following:

• Ears
• Eyes
• Teeth
• Limbs

Your dog’s dental health is something you must be proactive with; some breeds are more prone to problems than others. If your vet notices any issues, your dog may need to be brought in for treatment. If you’ve no pet insurance, medical treatment for your family pet can be expensive. To avoid getting hit with a huge bill you hadn’t accounted for, take out a policy to cover your dog in the event of an injury or serious illness.

Vaccinations

If you’ve a puppy, they’ll need to get several vaccinations to ensure they are healthy and able to fight certain diseases. The best way to find out about vaccinations is to visit your local vet and ask them for a breakdown of what needs to be done. A vet will be able to give your puppy its first set of vaccinations, they’ll then provide you with a timeline you can follow as your dog gets older.

Injuries & Illnesses

Should your dog suffer an accident that requires medical attention, you should immediately bring them to a medical facility. Remember to keep your local vets contact details close by, so if anything happens, you’ll have the clinics number and the vets after hours emergency number in your phone. If your pet seems lethargic or their behaviour has suddenly changed, it is better to have them checked to rule out any serious illnesses.

As mentioned previously, medical care for your pet is costly. To ensure you get financial compensation for certain types of treatment, purchase pet insurance from a legitimate provider. If something doesn’t seem right, err on the side of caution and have them checked.

If you are unsure about anything when it comes to your family pet, always consult with a professional. They’ll be able to give you the right advice on medical care for your pet. Medical care for your pet can get expensive if they need certain types of treatment, to ensure you are prepared, take out an insurance policy and give your pet the best care available.

Lokal Eatery & Bar, Vaughn Lowery, Jersey City, New Jersey, 360 MAGAZINE, Abraham John ARCHITECTS, Mona Panjwani, Walter Donadio

Lokal Eatery & Bar

By Vaughn Lowery

Jersey City officially opened up one of the swankiest restaurants on their waterfront with magnificent views of Manhattan. Mona Panjwani is the proprietor and visionary of this establishment. After 12 days of having their doors opened, they have built a team of individuals who are personable, approachable and possess a strong sense of ownership. Literally a recipe for prosperity.

With sufficient space, Lokal Eatery & Bar can comfortably sit up to 200 customers and is the perfect destination for a rehearsal dinner, trunk show, celebratory engagement and/or corporate gathering. Towards the rear, there’s a semi-private area with its own seating, lounge and sound system to drown out the clutter of what’s taken place in the main arena. “Lokal” murals, perfect for social engagement, are sprinkled throughout the spot which were constructed by a local commissioned artist. Adding an element of youth and elegance similar to its milieu. Overall the architecture and intent of this eclectic eatery have an industrial yet modern feel. Iron gates frame the bar and above the 30-foot island hangs a custom lighting installation.

Nestled in the heart of a rising luxury neighborhood within JC, this venue is destined to become one of the area’s most popular draws. Executive Chef, Walter Donadio, has managed to fabricate a tantalizing menu of appetizers, small plates and entrees which are certain to keep you coming back. Some of his best infused tapas and items include succulent scallops, rock shrimp, sauteed mushroom bowls as well as a vegan surf and turf packed with savory lentils. Most of their components are locally sourced and fresh from the Garden State – right down to the blueberries featured in some of their signature drinks.

Often times, you inflict a new place and the waitstaff is uncertain on what to recommend. That’s not the case for Lokal. Many of their squad members were well-informed on what they offer and even had ample recommendations for their handcrafted cocktails. Our favorites were their Elliott Stubb (reminiscent of an old fashioned) and Jerry Thomas – cucumber water iced cubes make this drink refreshing.

The future is bright for Lokal Eatery & Bar. And, with a strong location, menu and bar, it’s set to be one of the most prestigious brunch/dinner spots for global foodies, making it a firm contender for three Michelin stars and a James Beard Award. Subsequently, it’s extremely apparent that Mona and her crew are meticulous and pay close attention to details.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

*Brunch is Saturday & Sunday from 11am-3pm. A perfect place to relax and kick back with friends as well as family before the week starts. If you eat meat, be sure to try the lamb burger. The Bloody Mary and Margarita are sure to get almost any party started.

**Happy Hour is daily from 5-7pm.
