Small Axe Official Soundtrack

London UK; Director Steve McQueen has teamed up with Motown Records UK for the official soundtrack to the landmark five-film anthology Small Axe.

Personally curated and selected by Steve McQueen, The Small Axe Official Soundtrack, featuring original score by award-winning composer Mica Levi, will be released on Record Store Day, Saturday 12 June.

Steve McQueen: “Music is an integral part of Small Axe, especially Lovers Rock. Selecting the songs was definitely one of the most fun parts of making the anthology series, so I’m really excited about the soundtrack release, especially the legendary tracks “Silly Games” and “To Be Young, Gifted And Black” performed by the brilliant Tiana Major 9 and Michael Kiwanuka.”

Mica Levi: “I am proud and thankful to be part of the music used in Steve McQueen’s telling of a too unknown true story. It goes to show that protest is an essential democratic right it can change legislation and create visibility and equality.

The Small Axe Official Soundtrack encompasses a potent combination of original tracks, film score excerpts, music featured in the series and four powerful spoken word pieces written by the renowned poet Linton Kwesi Johnson and performed by himself alongside cast members Sheyi Cole, Rochenda Sandall and Shaun Parkes. Exclusive tracks include a rendition of “To Be Young, Gifted And Black” by Michael Kiwanuka and a rework of Janet Kay’s classic “Silly Games” by R&B songstress and Motown US artist, Tiana Major9.

Tiana Major9: ‘Silly Games by Janet Kay played a huge part in changing a generation by pushing the culture forward, as well as making the dream of creating timeless Black British Art a reality. To see the stories based on the lives of my people on a global scale, means so much to me.”

The original of “Silly Games” by Janet Kay also features on the soundtrack alongside the likes of “Got To Give It Up” by Marvin Gaye, “Pressure Drop” by Toots & The Maytals and “More Warning” by King Tubby, Augustus Pablo & The Aggrovators.

The Small Axe Official Soundtrack will be accompanied by a limited edition vinyl release with artwork direction by phenomenal creative collective; Mabdulle, Tara Ung and Wwwesh Studio

Nominated in a record 15 categories at the TV Bafta Awards on the 6 June 2021, the Small Axe anthology series comprises five original films by Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen (Hunger, Shame, 12 Years A Slave, Widows). Set from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s, the films each tell a different story involving London’s West Indian community, whose lives have been shaped by their own force of will, despite rampant racism and discrimination. Even though this collection of films is set some decades ago, the stories are as vital and timely today as they were for the West Indian community in London at the time. Small Axe is a celebration of Black joy, beauty, love, friendship, family, music and even food; each one, in its own unique way, conveys hard-won successes, bringing hope and optimism.

The music featured on the official soundtrack is integral to the DNA of these stories, both enhancing the narrative and paying homage to the musical and cultural heritage of the times documented in the series. The Small Axe Official Soundtrack, released by Motown Records UK on 12 June, is now available to pre-order https://smallaxe.lnk.to/PreOrder

POORSTACY x Public Enemy

Today, South Florida rock artist POORSTACY releases his first single and music video of 2021, “Public Enemy,” out now via 10K Projects. Inspired by the social unrest and political distrust of the last year, “Public Enemy” shows STACY giving a middle finger to the establishment. The single and its accompanying music video, co-directed by POORSTACY and Mooch, kicks off his roll out for the forthcoming album Party at the Cemetery, which is set to release this fall. Though he first made his mark as the Soundcloud emo-rap artist behind underground hits like “make up,” POORSTACY has since grown into a full fledged rockstar with a placement on the GRAMMY -nominated soundtrack Bill & Ted Face the Music to prove it.

“A lot of people are frustrated with the state of the world so hopefully my music can help them push through that aggression and be a positive outlet for them.” — POORSTACY on writing “Public Enemy” and his forthcoming album Party at the Cemetery

Growing up on a diet of punk, metal, and hip hop, rising artist POORSTACY is a sum of disparate influences. The 22-year-old singer, rapper and guitarist spent his formative years performing shows in small venues around his hometown of Palm Beach, Florida: “There’s a real metal scene out here. Lots of punk rock, gothic stuff. I’ve chosen to actually make music based on what I grew up around.”

Born Carlito Milfort Jr., POORSTACY’s interest in music began when his father taught him how to play guitar as a kid. “There were all kinds of music and instruments around my house,” he says. Now endorsed by Fender, POORSTACY has been drawn to live music for as long as he has been playing. Over the course of his teenage years, POORSTACY focused on honing his sound, which he describes as a mix of the “pure melodies” of punk and tinges of the “old rap shit [he] was doing,” and by March 2019, he had gained a major following on Soundcloud. With early hits like the emo-rap centric “make up” which gained 35,000 plays in under 24 hours, he attracted the attention of 10K Projects who signed POORSTACY in mid 2019.

Since the beginning of his music making, POORSTACY’s influences have been eclectic, ranging from Slipknot, Billy Idol, Earl Sweatshirt and Flatbush Zombies. Citing legendary Z-Boys skateboarder, Stacy Peralta, as the inspiration behind his artist name, he notes, “Stacy Peralta himself was not shown a lot of attention at the start, but he ended up being one of the biggest legends in skateboarding in the end. I always loved the idea of that, of doing your own thing and having it pay off.” Also citing films like V For Vendetta, Rob Zombie’s remake of Halloween, and Trainspotting as inspiration, a core tenet of POORSTACY’s songwriting is drawing from unlikely sources.

His debut album, The Breakfast Club (2020) was a hip hop/punk record which reflected his South Florida upbringing and proved his ability to create a large cohesive project. Featuring tracks like “Hotel” and “Afraid,” POORSTACY flirted with the more punk rock sound he is now committed to.

The Breakfast Club’s success was quickly followed up by the Trainspotting-inspired single “Choose Life,” his first to feature frequent collaborator, Travis Barker. Also in 2020, STACY’S single “Darkest Night” was featured on the GRAMMY-nominated soundtrack for Bill & Ted Face the Music, placing the newcomer alongside rock-gods like Mastodon, Weezer, and Big Black Delta. The soundtrack feature further proved that STACY is a perfect “rock star for the SoundCloud generation,” as The Noise puts it, bridging the gap between his emo-rap past and the rock anthems of his present.

After a monumental past year, POORSTACY is busy planning ahead for an even bigger 2021, with the release of his first full length hard rock record Party at the Cemetery, which is set to release this fall. Inspired by the badassery and drama of 2000s icons like My Chemical Romance and Pierce the Veil, STACY channels the isolation and unrest of the chaotic last year. “I think a lot of people were hurting during COVID, hopefully people can use my music for healing and connection,” he explains.

Tonight, they are set to deliver an unforgettable performance on NBC’s The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon performing “I Lied” with Allison Ponthier and tomorrow morning, they take the stage at CBS This Morning: Saturday for a performance not to be missed.

Earlier this week the band created the first ever social media séance where fans could join WBUB TV and participate in a virtual summoning. Once 1,000 participants joined and uttered the incantation they were treated to a special broadcast of Whispering Pines artists performances.

All questions will finally be answered today as the group’s vision unfurls throughout these sixteen tracks on Long Lost. Most recently, they shared the single “I Lied” [feat. Allison Ponthier]. It has already amassed over 1.5 million streams and counting. In addition, it has been plugged by Brooklyn Vegan and more.

The band have also announced a Fall 2021 headline tour, their first shows in support of Long Lost. The tour kicks off in Philadelphia on September 9 and hits a variety of outdoor venues in New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, Seattle, Portland and other markets across the country with Allison Ponthier opening on select dates. See full list of tour dates below. Tickets are on sale now. Visit www.lordhuron.com for more info and ticket links.

Increasing excitement for the arrival of Long Lost, the lead single “Not Dead Yet” captured #1 at AAA Radio for five weeks in a row. Not only did it complete their fastest rise at the format to date, but this feat also marks their very first #1 and the song has reached nearly 8 million streams. Additionally, the guys hit the stage at Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! for a show-stopping television debut performance of Not Dead Yet.” Watch it HERE. Spin claimed, they sharpened their teeth,” while UPROXX described the track as driving. In addition to plugs from Stereogum and more, Brooklyn Vegan touted it among Our Favorite Songs of the Week. See full track list for Long Lost below.

Last month, they shared the title track Long Lost.” It just cracked 1.6 million streams, while Variance praised it as whimsical, haunting and Brooklyn Vegan wrote, This one finds them combining their trademark indie folk with sweeping, string-laden vintage balladry.” Prior, Lord Huron released album track “Mine Forever” to critical acclaim. In addition to nearly 4 million-plus streams, it garnered plugs from Rolling StoneSpin, and more. The music video featured blurred faces of performers from Whispering Pines Studio and added more clues to the mystery behind Long Lost. Check out the video for “Mine Forever” Here!

Yesterday, fans across the country began noticing vinyl from the Whispering Pines back catalog showing up in various sections of record stores across the country. Notably, the artists who originally recorded the vinyl were seen in numerous episodes of Alive From Whispering Pines. This isn’t the first time that the merchandise, music and memorabilia from Whispering Pines studios has suddenly appeared, as fans have already found items for sale recently on CraigsList, Reverb, and Discogs.

During its first episode, viewers were introduced to Mr. Tubbs Tarbell, fell under the spell of commercials that may very well be lost tapes from the past, and were treated to some incredible performances by Lord Huron. The band played some old songs including “Meet Me In The Woods” (view video here) and provided a sneak peek at some new songs. The episode also featured a hotline where fans could call in and ask Mr. Tarbell questions and request songs from the band. Episode 2 included additional cryptic clues, more beautiful performances from Lord Huron (including  “The World Ender” and  “Frozen Pines”) and even the secret world premiere of “Mine Forever.” Episode 3 included a long awaited performance of “The Night We Met,” “The Balancers Eye,” and fan favorite “Ghost on The Shore.” In case you missed the performances of “The Night We Met” Watch HERE. The final episode featured a performance of “I Lied” with Allison Ponthier herself and tied up the four episode story of Alive From Whispering Pines and set the stage for Long Lost.

In the beginning of this new era, Tubbs put out an official letter into the multi-verse from Whispering Pines Studios describing the mythical tale of recording Long Lost with Lord Huron and the origins of its cosmic music. Read the full letter HERE.

What could be in store for the band next? Only time will tell…As Tubbs says: “As ever, friends, may you live until you die”

What’s New In Mendocino

As the weather in Mendocino warms up, with sunny days and starry nights, hiking and camping are at their peak, organic gardens are bursting with goodness, bees are buzzing around copious blooms, outdoor dining is all the rage, and indoor pampering goes to another level. This Spring and Summer, an array of gracious inns on the Coast and a heritage campsite in the redwoods will launch new guest offerings, while exciting changes are afoot at the Skunk Train, one of the County’s most popular attractions.

In June, the much-lauded Brewery Gulch Inn will begin offering a CBD package for guests that includes a CBD massage for two, a welcome amenity basket, and a private consultation with a cannabis expert to determine what CBD product is best for the guests’ personal health and wellness needs (Pricing and full details have not been fully confirmed yet, so stay tuned!). And because spring is a time of growth, the Inn is adding the planting of a redwood tree to their Celtic Handfasting Vow Renewal ceremony, as a real and growing symbol of a couple’s everlasting commitment. The thousands-of-years-old tradition of Celtic Handfasting is a moving way to seal a compact of forever love. A celebrant helps craft a memorable interlude in a serene setting, and the ceremony includes a photographer, flowers, a Celtic pastry, and sparkling wine for $1,300. The Brewery Gulch Inn is an arts and crafts gem fashioned from eco-harvested recycled redwood. Their 10 romantic rooms overlook wild and wonderful Smuggler’s Cove and the mighty Pacific. The thoughtfully appointed rooms feature all the amenities of a first-class hotel, including plush Sferra linens, gas fireplaces, and comfy throws. Full-time Executive Chef Stephen Smith prepares a complimentary daily cooked-to-order breakfast for all guests, as well as an array of delectable appetizers during the nightly Wine Hour, using locally sourced and organic ingredients.

Iconic Little River Inn is taking advantage of the warming weather and planting their very own garden to supply fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs for Executive Chef Marc Dym’s award-winning restaurant. A sampling of items grown will include heirloom tomatoes, specialty greens and Costata Romanesco zucchini (perfect for summer grilling)! They also plan to pickle and preserve some of this precious bounty for guests to take home with them. Later this Spring, Little River Inn will start construction on an ocean-view seating area in front of the property, with a fire pit and small tables, for a casual seafood shack-like experience. And in keeping with the theme of re-invention, their most popular oceanfront Van Damme rooms are getting a refresh. The historic Inn has been in the same family for five generations and generations of families return each year to delight in this luxurious home away from home. In addition to their chef-driven restaurant, the Inn boasts a nine-hole Audubon-certified golf course, professional tennis courts and a day spa. Perfect for the whole family (and pet-friendly as well), they have 65 guest rooms ranging from the economical to the opulent – all of which have ocean views.

Come summer, the area’s most popular attraction — the Skunk Train – will launch a new a 3.5-mile hiking trail out of their Fort Bragg Depot. The flat, groomed trail runs along the train tracks, and weaves between soaring redwoods and across scenic waterways. After riding the train out to the Glen Blair Junction turn-around point, riders can choose to return to the Fort Bragg depot on foot, and savor the picturesque walk back along the new trail. The Skunk Train is a 135-year-old heritage train line that once moved enormous Redwood trunks to the rugged Mendocino Coast. Today passengers travel along estuaries and over bridges into the heart of the redwoods, through terrain that has remained essentially undisturbed for centuries, including trees that are more than 1,000 years old. Riders can observe deer, blue heron, egrets, osprey, ducks, turtles – and even the occasional river otter – all from the comfort of their seat or an open-air-car.

The new Spa at Noyo at the stately Noyo Harbor Inn promises an incredibly indulgent idyll. Launching in May, the Spa will offer massages, facials and other spa treatments in a charming setting overlooking Noyo River. Patrons of the Spa will receive 10% off at the restaurant, hotel or gift shop on the day of their treatment. Their restaurant, HarborView Bistro & Bar, features a seasonally changing menu of pre-Prohibition era cocktails and California Coastal Cuisine, including fresh wild-caught fish and herbs and vegetables gathered from their Chef Fabrice Jean-Pierre Dubuc’s garden. The new Spring cocktail list includes many unique offerings, such as the Mendocino Mermaid (El Dorado Demarara White Rum, Blueberry-Lavender Simple Syrup, Guava Purée, Lime Juice and Star Fruit). Meals and libations can now be enjoyed on the Inn’s expansive tented patio with sweeping views over quaint Noyo Harbor to the Pacific beyond. This world-class destination from 1868 has refurbished and updated rooms throughout, providing spacious comfort while retaining some of the exquisite features left by the Norwegian shipbuilders who embellished the inn. Many of the elegantly furnished rooms have fireplaces, soaking tubs, and private balconies.

The bees are abuzz at The Inn at Newport Ranch! The Ranch has big plans for the honey from the five new hives, including using it in their bakery and in the cheese course served nightly at dinner. The new arrivals are happily buzzing around the extensive organic gardens, promising delicious treats to come. At The Inn at Newport Ranch, they are all about sustainable agriculture and stewardship of their land. Denizens of the Ranch have just planted 3,500 new redwood trees with 500 additional trees set aside for guests to plant when they take an inspirational and educational UTV tour of the property. They are also expanding their regenerative ranching practices and minimizing their carbon footprint to ensure their 2,100 pristine acres will be unspoiled for future generations. Guests have exclusive access to this vast property that encompasses virgin redwood forests, grasslands, beaches, and cliffs with 50-mile panoramic views across the Pacific. Executive Chef Adam Stacy – whose résumé includes Michelin-starred restaurants Per Se and Saison – cooks using locally sourced ingredients (much of which comes from their own organic gardens). The Ranch’s interior spaces are designed to enhance the natural beauty of the location and each room is a bespoke masterpiece filled with handcrafted objects and items from the owner’s world travels. Recycled redwood trunks soar to cathedral ceilings, local wines as well as offerings from afar are poured in front of a 20-foot fireplace, and stunning views abound.

Starting in May, the Glendeven Inn & Lodge and its sister property, The Inn at the Cobbler’s Walk, will be offering a deluxe private Wine Hour service for two. Guests will get exclusive use of the spacious Farmhouse Lounge, which features a large brick wood-burning fireplace and glorious ocean views. Provided are a bottle of local wine, a charcuterie spread, a loaf of fresh house-made bread, and dessert. In addition, guests have a key to the Lounge for the entire afternoon and evening on the day they’ve reserved. The experience is $150 per couple. And beginning in June, they’ll offer an interactive art exhibition in the gallery. Using a vintage typewriter, guests will be able to memorialize on parchment paper their experiences of the day (all musings will begin with “On This Day….”). The guests can then either take the paper away as a keepsake or pin it on the wall of the gallery for future guests to read and enjoy. Glendeven Inn & Lodge and The Inn at the Cobbler’s Walk are adults-only European-inspired properties encompassing 16 acres total, with easy access to 1,800 acres of state park lands and pristine nature reserve trails. Surrounded on three sides by lush Van Damme State Park, both properties offer beautifully appointed rooms (some with dramatic ocean views) with wood-burning stoves and access to pastures of roaming llamas and colorful chickens. Every morning, a three-course breakfast is delivered in a basket to each room, which includes a dish made with eggs from the Inn’s more than 75 free-range hens.

This July, for the first time ever, people will be able to book a “Weekend in the Woods” at Camp Navarro. Previously, this secret hideaway under the redwoods was only available for private events and festivals. Now, guests can book select weekends in July, August or October (Thursday through Sunday nights; minimum three-night stay) at this ideal version of a nostalgic summer camp. Guests can choose from a variety of cozy cabins, deluxe glamping teepees or East Coast-style three-sided Adirondack cabins. Lodging includes daily activities, access to nature trails, lawn games and nightly campfires and s’mores. Revel in hiking, games, and gazing at the stars – or find a hammock under the perfect tree and just take it all in. Hearkening back to a traditional camp, guests must bring their own bedding, although down bedding rentals are available if guests forget anything. Situated in the lush wine country of Northern California’s Anderson Valley, Camp Navarro comprises over 200 acres of ancient forest nestled along the Navarro River and bisected by Neefus Creek. They offer gourmet cuisine (guests will sign up for a Meal Plan at the time of booking to cover breakfasts and dinners), and world class local beer and wine, as well as a staff that caters to guests’ needs, meticulous accommodations, and hand-built redwood-milled outdoor showers, allowing guests to be as rustic as they choose while communing with nature in its purest form.

The businesses above have all been self-certified to host visitors to the utmost safety standards and strictest cleaning protocols, above and beyond what is mandated by the Mendocino County Public Health Office. Masks must be worn in the county when not eating and drinking and people are asked to stay six feet away from anyone not in their household group.

House of Dragon: A Sneak Peek into the Upcoming GOT Spinoff

Even after eight full seasons of Game of Thrones, fans have hardly had enough of the show. George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” is a long story full of unanswered questions. Anyone who’s read the books will agree that the TV series only scraped the surface. Not to mention, the ending left us with debates and was full of plot holes. It’s likely that they rushed to wrap things up. We are hoping the same will not happen in the upcoming spinoffs.

The GOT team is currently working on about 5 spinoffs. Among them is the much-awaited House of the Dragon, 10,000 Ships, The Tale of Dunk and Egg, Flea Bottom, and 9 Voyage. House of the Dragon is set to follow hot on the heels of GOT’s season 8. Besides some leaked stills from the set, here’s the information we have so far:

The Plot

As the name suggests, House of the Dragon revolves around the Targaryen family and is based on George R. R. Martin’s book, “Fire and Blood.” It tells the story of Westeros 300 years before the events in GOT, when the Targaryens were in power. According to the book’s description, we expect the show to answer questions such as:

  • What happened during the dance of the dragons (the Targaryen civil war that impacted all of the seven kingdoms)?
  • Why Valyria was dreaded after the doom?
  • The life in Westeros when dragons dominated the skies
  • The worst actions of Meagor the Cruel

Airing Timeline

According to Casey Bloys, HBO’s programming chief, House of the Dragon is likely to start airing in 2022. Although, the precise premiere date is yet to be determined. On April 26, HBO disclosed that production had already begun, sharing a photo of the cast doing a table read in a social-distanced gathering with the caption “fire will reign” on Twitter.

A few other disclosed pictures from the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel suggest that filming is being done in the southwest coast of England. The photos show casts and crew on Holywell Bay Beach, Cornwall. If the only Game of Thrones action you have been getting so far is playing GOT video games or a GOT slots game in online casinos, you’ll be glad to know that we are soon getting hauled back to Westeros and beyond.

Who’s Involved?

Behind the Scenes

Behind the Scenes are Martin and screenwriter Ryan Condal (Hercules and Colony) as co-creators. Condal will also serve as showrunner in collaboration with Miguel Sapochnik, who directed six episodes of GOT and won Emmy and DGA for “Battle of the Bastards”. He will also be writing the script alongside Sara Lee Hess, who will be working with Vince Gerardis, Martin, and Sapochnik as executive producers.

Also expected to direct are Greeta V. Patel (The Witcher and Meet the Patels), Clare Kilner (director of The Alienist: Angel of Darkness), and Greg Yaitanes (House, Banshee). The Emmy-winning Game of Thrones Composer Ramin Djawadi (Westworld) will score the series.

Cast

From the official casting announcement that we got in October 2020, we know that the following actors will be involved:

  • Paddy Considine (The Outsider, Peaky Blinders) is set to play King Viserys Targaryen, a warm, kind, and decent man chosen to succeed King Jahaerys Targaryen as ruler of Westeros. However, it is said that “good men do not necessarily make for great kings.”
  • Matt Smith (Netflix’s Juggernaut as Prince Philip) will be taking the role of Prince Daemon Targaryen, King Viserys’ younger brother and heir to the throne. He is described as an unrivaled warrior and a dragon rider with the true blood of the dragons.
  • Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers, Wanderlust) will be Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the King’s first-born child and a pure Valyrian born. She also is a dragon rider. You could say she came into the world with everything – except she wasn’t a man.
  • Steve Toussaint (Doctor Who, It’s a Sin) takes the role of Lord Corlys Velaryon, aka The Sea Snake. He is the lord of House Velaryon, an ancient Valyrian bloodline much like House Targaryen. Lord Corlys is the most reputable nautical adventurer in the Seven Kingdoms, claims the largest navy in the world, and his house is wealthier than the Lannisters.
  • Rhys Ifans: (Notting Hill, Enduring Love) will appear as Otto Hightower, The Hand of the King. Ser Otto is a faithful servant to both his king and the realm.
  • Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel, Vanity Fair) plays the role of Alicent Hightower, the most comely woman in Westeros, who was raised in the Red Keep. She has a keen judgment for politics, as well as a courtly grace.
  • Fabien Frankel (The Serpent) will be taking the major role of Ser Criston Cole, a Dornish common-born with no claim to lands or titles, but is an honorable swordsman.
  • Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina, Beauty and the Beast) will play Mysaria, who came to Westeros empty-handed and has been sold more than she can remember. Despite all these challenges, she rises to become an unlikely, trusted ally of Prince Daemon Targaryen.

How About the Other Game of Thrones Spinoffs?

The GOT team is currently working on several other spinoffs, although their production and airing timelines are not as clear. Among them is 9 Voyages, which is expected to tell the story of Corlys Velaryo (The Sea Snake) and will be starring Steve Toussant.

10,000 Ships is set 1,000 years before the events in GOT, revolving around Nymeria of House Martel, the founder of Dorne. You may recall Arya’s direwolf in GOT was called Nymeria. So was one of the sand snakes.

Another spinoff, The Tale of Dunk and Egg, tells the story of the iconic knight Ser Duncan the Tall, aka Dunk, (who later becomes king Aegon V Targaryen) and his squire Egg. It is based on Martin’s novel, “Tales of Dunk and Egg,” and is set only 90 years before the events of GOT.

Flea Bottom is another prequel reportedly under development. It is set in Flea Bottom, the slum of King’s Landing. This is where the poorest residents in the Capital of Westeros live. Davos Seaworth and Gendry are some of the GOT characters who started their lives here.

Conclusion

One thing is for sure–Game of Thrones has grown in our hearts to become a culture, touching aspects of life we never before imagined. For all dragon lovers out there, we can’t wait to get immersed in the heroics, politics, cunning, and plot twists involved in Martin’s stories of the Seven Kingdoms. We hope House of the Dragon will fill the air with the same hype as GOT.

6 Inspiring Gifts for Your Daughter’s Graduation

Graduating is a very important milestone in a person’s life. Whether your daughter is graduating from high school or college, it signifies growth and is the start of the next journey in her life. As a result, it should be celebrated – it means your daughter is one step closer to reaching her full potential.

In order to show your pride and appreciation, it is customary to get someone a gift when they graduate. This could be anything, which can often make the decision of what to choose a difficult one. With that in mind, here are six inspiring and appropriate gifts to give your daughter for her graduation.

Flowers

Flowers are a graduation gift that your daughter is sure to love and appreciate. Depending on their type and color, they can have a variety of meanings: love, pride and even appreciation. These flowers can be displayed in your daughter’s bedroom or apartment, and will not only improve how the space looks, but also fill it with a wonderful scent.

There are many reasons why a flower bouquet is a perfect gift. They are very versatile, timeless, affordable and convenient for everyone involved. Also, in addition to being great for graduations, flowers are great for birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s Day and various other holidays.

A Piece of Jewelry

Jewelry is another classic graduation gift. Giving your daughter a new necklace, ring, bracelet or pair of earrings is a lovely option to consider. You could even engrave the jewelry with a special message or quote. This could inspire them, make them happy, remind them of home or tell them anything you’d like.

The right piece can also help your daughter keep up with the latest jewelry trends, as well. If you want to show your pride in your daughter, and help her look and feel her best, some new jewelry can do just that. Every time she wears it, she will think of you and the support you gave her throughout her journey in school.

A Subscription Box

A subscription box is another good choice. These have taken off in recent years and there are dozens of different ones your daughter is sure to love. These boxes ship products to your daughter each and every month, right to her door. You can choose from beauty boxes, snack boxes, wine and spirits boxes, or relaxation boxes. If she has an interest, there is probably a subscription box for it.

A unique box might also help her discover a new hobby, work on her skills in the kitchen, learn more about a new topic or even add to a hobby or collection she already has. Many of the items in these boxes can be customized, making them completely exclusive to the recipient.

A Book

If your daughter is an avid reader, a thoughtful book can be a great gift. This could be an inspiring book about her future and how to best reach her potential, or even a book all about entertaining her to make her laugh. The choice is yours and will depend on what she likes.

If she’s always on the go and cannot always bring a bulky book or multiple books with her, consider getting her an e-reader. These can store plenty of books on them, and are very convenient to take wherever she goes.

New Technology

People love technology and most of us rely on it daily. If your daughter is a techie, a new type of tech she doesn’t have is a great gift idea. Wireless earbuds, a new laptop, or a smart speaker are just some of the many options out there. If you are not sure what she would like, consider getting a gift card to an online tech store, so she can choose exactly what she wants.

Household Goods or Appliances

If your daughter has her own place, is going to college soon or is moving out, some household goods or appliances are other great gifts to consider. This could be a fancy blender, a new coffee maker, a good food processor or anything in between. While they might not be the most exciting, they are very useful and will be much appreciated in the long run.

In addition to being incredibly useful and saving her some money, these can help inspire your daughter to think about her future. Once she moves out and finds her own place, she will think of you every time she uses the item, and will appreciate all you had to do to support her growth over the years.

Get a Graduation Gift She Is Sure To Appreciate

A graduation is a big deal in a person’s life and should be celebrated. Any of these six ideas are great ideas to give your daughter to celebrate her graduation and all the hard work she put in to reach her goal.

5 Steps to Become a Fashion Designer

Are you a creative person who loves clothes, bags, shoes and the changing trends that each season brings when it comes to new designs? If so, why not choose a career that allows you to express your individuality and explore your passion at the same time? Sound exciting? A career in fashion design might just be your calling. Let’s run through some of the essential steps you’ll need to take to make it in the ever-evolving world of fashion.

Move to a Major City

If you live in a small town with zero opportunities to get valuable work experience, it’s time to consider moving to a major city. Yes, rent is expensive and you may need to take out personal loans from a private lender to cover the first few months of rent and living costs but it will be so worth it. Before moving, reach out to fashion outlets and well-known clothing manufacturers to see if there are any work experience opportunities available. You’ll learn so much from observing operations in a professional setting and you’ll get to work with all kinds of different materials and styles. This experience will prove invaluable when it comes to branching out on your own.

Be Prepared Early On

Listen up high school students! The fact you’re even thinking about becoming a fashion designer at this young age is proof that this career path is for you. Start your prep early by signing up for drawing, art and design classes. A lot of fashion design programs require students to have artistic talent so learn early and your future self with certainly thank you for it.

Get a Degree

You need to take this point seriously if you want to make noise in this competitive industry. Getting a degree in fashion design will teach you everything you need to know when it comes to creating a sketch and bringing that sketch to life. You’ll learn about the properties of different fabrics and you’ll get familiar with essential skills such as stitching, pattern making and draping.

Create a Portfolio

All fashion designers create a portfolio early on in their careers. It’s what you’ll give to prospective fashion schools and employers so it’s got to showcase your best work. Treat each project in that portfolio like it was a major job for a real-world fashion designer and don’t cut corners when it comes to sketching and displaying your strong points. Be sure that the finished folder also demonstrates how good your communication skills are.

Network

Yes, it’s time to mingle! Get involved in fashion shows and enter as many design competitions as you possibly can. Talk to people at these events and don’t be shy in showing off your skills and sharing your ambitions for the future. Sign up to fashion blogs and interact with like-minded people on social media and forums. Check for industry-related networking events in your local area and show up with a smile and a willingness to get involved. If there’s not much happening in your local town/city in terms of fashion shows and competitions, why not make a name for yourself locally and organize your own events? Doing so is a great way to demonstrate drive and tenacity, both of which are traits you’re your future employers will appreciate.

How to Get a Job at a Dispensary

The cannabis trade is one of the fastest-growing industries in the US. Americans purchased $18.3 billion in cannabis products, a 71% increase over the prior year. However, hiring in this area still lags, and it’s one of the more competitive job markets. Those who are anxious for a position in a dispensary can do a few things to increase their odds of getting hired.

1. Become knowledgeable about cannabis products.

Learn about the different strains that are available and what flavors and experiences they offer. Be able to talk intelligently about hybrids, terpenes, and THC content. You can learn all of this and more by reading cannabis industry websites and newsletters. The more you know, the better a hire you’ll be.

2. Create a killer resume.

Your resume and cover letter make up your first impression. Construct yours so that it highlights the skills and experience that would make you a great budtender. No experience in the cannabis field? Consider a skill-based resume that highlights past customer service positions and education about cannabis.

Mirror the language used in the job ad. For instance, if they say they want someone who can establish rapport with customers, use that phrase when describing your skills. A resume isn’t just a record of your job history. It’s an important personal marketing tool. Customize yours for every job opening to increase your chances of landing the gig.

3. Highlight your customer service and sales skills.

Being able to provide a great experience to customers is a key to being a successful budtender. In your cover letter or in your interview, talk about what you consider a great visit to a cannabis dispensary and how you can make it happen for your customers.

Before your interview, think of a story you can share about a time you helped a customer make a decision. Or, describe a time that you used sales skills to increase company revenue. A former server, for instance, can describe how they convinced restaurant guests to stay for dessert or add a bottle of wine to a special meal.

4. Get familiar with the dispensaries in your area.

The more customized your approach, the more likely you are to win the job. If you live in the Oakland area, visit several Oakland dispensaries for research. Learn about the offerings and the look and feel of each. This gives you the tools you need to show that you are a cultural match for the shop.

5. Set yourself up for a lateral move.

If the position you want isn’t open or if it’s one that requires experience, don’t give up hope. Instead, change your strategy. Look for other job openings in the cannabis field. It doesn’t matter if it’s cleaning and maintenance, as long as you learn on the job and make an excellent impression. Once you are in, you are in a position to hear about new openings first. You can build up your resume and your knowledge to make you a better fit for the role that is your ultimate goal.

6. Use your networks.

Far more jobs are filled by word of mouth than by online job ads. Talk to the people who you know both personally and professionally. You may know someone who has a lead for a shop that is looking for new personnel.

7. Thank your interviewer.

If you get as far as an interview, make a good impression during and after by being friendly, open, and establishing good rapport. After your interview, take a few minutes to pen a hand-written thank you note for sharing their time with you. This used to be common job hunt etiquette, but has largely fallen out of favor. By making this unusual move, you can make yourself stick out from the crowd.

8. Emphasize your soft skills.

Most dispensaries aren’t just looking for someone to run a register. They want someone who is warm and approachable. Being able to put first-time visitors at ease is a soft skill that is vital for a successful dispensary worker. You should also be able to show that you are a good multitasker who can switch easily from task to task.

If you are passionate about cannabis and want to be part of this industry, that enthusiasm should come out in your resume, your cover letter and your interview. Take the time to hone your pitch to show your local dispensary that you are an excellent fit.

Trippie Redd x Playboi Carti Miss The Rage

Released on May 7th through 10K Projects/ Virgin Music, Trippie Redd and Playboi Carti’s long awaited “Miss The Rage” has debuted at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. With over 38.2M global combined streams and no music video to date, this is the highest charting single debut for both artists. Furthermore, “Miss The Rage” was the #1 most added song at Rhythm radio yesterday, and is currently the third most added song at Urban radio. Lauded by The New York Times, Rolling Stone, FADER, Complex and more, “Miss The Rage” currently occupies the Spotify playlists; Today’s Top Hits, Rap Caviar, Pop Rising, Get Turnt and more. “Miss The Rage” sits at #1 on Soundcloud’s Top 50 US and WW charts and #5 on Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Songs.

One of the most versatile and creatively daring artists in hip-hop today, Trippie Redd makes music that’s both wildly experimental and massively appealing. Since delivering his debut mixtape A Love Letter to You in 2017, the multi-platinum-selling, chart-topping rapper/singer/songwriter has continually defied genre boundaries, embedding his melodic take on rap with frenetic elements of rock-and-roll and heavy metal. And with his penetrating lyrics and nuanced but hard-hitting vocal performance, the 21-year-old Ohio native matches that endless ingenuity with a powerfully raw emotional impact.

A self-professed workaholic who’s now debuted five consecutive projects in the top 5 of the Billboard 200 chart —Trippie got his start as a teenager “living in a basement with roaches recording music,” as he tells it. Born Michael Lamar White IV and raised in Canton, Ohio, he grew up on hip-hop icons like Tupac Shakur, Nas, and Jay-Z, but later became fascinated with the shock-rock of Slipknot and Rob Zombie. As he recalls, the urge to create his own music arose soon after his older brother (an aspiring rapper who went by the name Dirty Redd) died in a car accident when Trippie was 10. (“I took his dream and did it myself,” Trippie says now.) Drawing much of his inspiration from the free-flowing style and inventive lyricism of Lil Wayne, Trippie began recording in his cousin’s basement and later relocated to Atlanta to further hone his skills, quickly landing a record deal with 10K Projects.

Though 2020 brought its fair share of adjustments for the rapper with the arrival of COVID-19, Trippie used his time in quarantine to make some of his boldest career moves yet. He made his Hollywood acting debut in a cameo during an episode of Lil Dicky’s critically acclaimed DAVE. He also dropped his highly anticipated album, Pegasus, on Halloween. The mythical LP, which debuted at #2, included the intoxicating “Excitement” featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR and showed Trippie bridging the generational gap with the legendary Busta Rhymes on “I Got You.” The deluxe version of Pegasus comes in the form of NEON SHARK, a collaboration album with production from Travis Barker, due February 19, 2021.

In just a few short years, rapper Playboi Carti has amassed millions of streams worldwide, with a global appeal that has steadily placed him within the upper echelon of new stars. The Atlanta native first started his career in high school under the name Sir Cartier. Raised on a cross-section of soulful Pop greats like Prince and Michael Jackson mixed with Trap stars like Jeezy and Gucci Mane, Carti found his own voice, securing local buzz with tracks like “YUNGXANHOE” and “Lost.” He graduated high school and was bound for the Bronx, where connecting with the A$AP Mob became fortuitous as he later forged a bond with leader A$AP Rocky and became a de-facto Mob affiliate. A series of viral hits followed—from “Broke Boi” to “Fetti”—as Carti later inked a deal with Interscope Records and dropped his eponymous mixtape in 2017.

The project featured the single “Magnolia,” as its meteoric rise garnered over 600 million cumulative streams with cosigns from Beyoncé and features on series like Atlanta. The following year, Carti dropped his debut album Die Lit, debuting at Number 3 on the Billboard 200, boasting collaborations like Lil Uzi Vert on “Shoota,” “Poke It Out” with Nicki Minaj, “Love Hurts” with Travis Scott and many more. In April of 2020, he returned with “@MEH,” cracking the 80 million mark already in streams. In December 2020, Playboi Carti released his highly anticipated album Whole Lotta Red. The album marked his first #1 album on Billboard’s 200 chart and received 160 Million global streams within its first week. In addition, Whole Lotta Red trended #1 upon its release on Twitter, and tracks from the album held 3 out of the top ten trending spots at YouTube including #1 upon release.  With a constant string of hits, Playboi Carti doesn’t miss.
