KO Media's Elle Canada Adwoa Aboah Cover covered by 360 Magazine

Adwoa Aboah × ELLE Canada

KO Média proudly unveils the October issue of ELLE Canada featuring activist, model and optimist Adwoa Aboah, who opens her heart and shares frank advice for students navigating these strange times.

“For me, school was a roller coaster. On the one hand, I was fortunate to have a supportive family and a close circle of friends,” Adwoa explains in the intimate piece.

“On the other hand, I was extremely shy and insecure about almost everything… I quietly hid my insecurities and internalized my shame.” Now, after founding an online community dedicated largely to mental health, Aboah explains how she rebuilt her life after hitting rock bottom. “Why did I feel so much loneliness and shame about having messy feelings when they are so common and natural?”

In addition to Adwoa’s feature and fresh advice, the October issue will discuss navigating your career during the pandemic, fall accessory trends, and how frizz is in for hair styles this season. Also, this issue has ELLE and UNESCO joining forces and inviting noted thinkers from around the world to imagine what our post-pandemic new-normal will hold.

Check out the October issue of ELLE Canada when it hits the stands on Monday, September 14th.

TINLICKER & HELSLOOT’s New EP

TINLICKER & HELSLOOT SHARE SOARING PARADISE EP

Utrecht dance-floor dreamers Tinlicker return today with a new collaborative EP with Helsloot called Paradise. The set is Tinlicker’s first release since signing to Astralwerks, and it’s a worthy continuation of the airy, meditative club tracks that Micha Heyboer and Jordi van Achthoven have been making together for the better part of the last decade. Listen to Paradise HERE.

In August, Tinlicker and fellow Dutch DJ Helsloot shared the EP’s title track, featuring a swoon-worthy performance from R&B vocalist Saro, who soars above their cloudy house beats. The release is rounded out by another track called “Like,” a stormier effort that starts with some rumbling basswork before returning to the stratospheric realms the producers often inhabit together. It’s a more straightforward dance cut, in contrast to the feathery lightness of the title track’s R&B refractions. The EP also includes extended mixes of each song.

The EP marks Tinlickerߣs second team up with Helsloot following technicolor bliss bomb Éc;Because You Move Me,Éd; released in 2017 on Armada and still echoing from speakers all over. Paradise is also the latest offering in a particularly imaginative phase for Tinlicker. In 2019, they released This Is Not Our Universe on Anjunabeats, an album exploring house and techno’s spacious outer realms. In March of this year, they followed with a remix album, featuring reimaginings and reworks from Dosem, Deeparture, and Grum, among others.

Today, the duo is also sharing a “Likevisualizer, which features the EP’s stunning cover art spinning and pulsing in time with the trackߣs dizzy rhythms. A house in the middle of an empty field comes alive like a club in the twilight hours ߞ a reminder, perhaps, that you can find ecstasy in the midst of the everyday.

About Tinlicker: Tinlicker are the face of contemporary Dutch dance music. Utrecht-based duo Micha Heyboer and Jordi van Achthoven have been crafting their computerized soul together since 2013, and even during those early days they were no rookies. They honed their skills individually as part of the world-renowned drum ‘nߣ bass act Black Sun Empire (Heyboer) and as producer, songwriter, and music editor for many artists (Van Achthoven). All this experience showed from day one, resulting in an impressive string of highly mature and deeply emotive tracks. Since starting working together theyߣve quickly become a household name in the world of electronic dance music with releases on labels such as Armada, mau5trap, and Anjunadeep.

About Astralwerks: Established in 1993 in New York City, Astralwerks was the brainchild of Caroline Records staffers who saw an opportunity for a label focused on the nascent electronic and ambient scene. Now based at the historic Capitol Records Tower in Hollywood, Astralwerks has emerged as a modern, artist-first label and the #1 market share leader for dance/electronic music in the U.S. Combining a scalable, independent, and globally minded ethos with the ability to tap into the resources of a major label has enabled Astralwerks to sign such artists as ILLENIUM, Jonas Blue, Alison Wonderland, EDEN, ZHU, and Alesso. As a testament to its pioneering approach, Astralwerks has amassed 30 GRAMMY&#ae; nominations, taken home six GRAMMY Awards, and had historic releases from the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Swedish House Mafia, Halsey, Porter Robinson, Phoenix, Eric Prydz, Fatboy Slim, and many others. The label has also released such massive singles as the 5x Platinum Éc;HappierÉd; by Marshmello + Bastille and FISHERߣs Éc;Losing It.Éd;

Ruel – Bright Lights, Red Eyes EP

Today, Ruel announces his forthcoming EP, Bright Lights, Red Eyes, out October 23rd via RCA Records. Written entirely in Paris, the EP is the third from the Australian artist, following last year’s Free Time, which MTV described as “an accomplished reflection of Ruel’s stated influences, contemporary touchstones, and his own, growing voice.”

Speaking on the inspiration behind the EP, Ruel says: “I want to get across that this project is another step forward in maturity for me. Free Time was a step up from Ready, and this Bright Lights, Red Eyes EP is a step up again. This project was a stream of consciousness when I was writing it at the time, and I feel like that’s the way all projects and songs are for me. They are moments in time. This project isn’t who I am right now as I wrote these songs last year, but it’s the most mature you’ve ever heard me and it was me, in that moment in time. The songs I’m writing now will be more mature again, and I love that my fans can come on this journey with me as I grow.”

Other Projects

Alongside the EP announcement, Ruel is also sharing the first offering from the project “as long as you care,” which arrives with a video directed by Grey Ghost (Jeremy Koren). Additionally, the artist is announcing RuelVision, a 24-hour online television network featuring unique and fun programs starring Ruel, from music and cooking, to news and lifestyle. The ambitious venture is the largest content-driven artist campaign of 2020, and a testament to Ruel’s continual drive to push creative boundaries. The network launches this Monday, September 14th, with on demand access available when you pre-order Bright Lights, Red Eyes.

Following that, Ruel has grand plans for his highly-anticipated debut album. He’s working closely with M-Phazes and THIEF (both of whom have nurtured Ruel since his debut single), ensuring that the full-length will be an organic affair. “It’s a lot more layered, I want each project to have more meaning and purpose,” Ruel says. “I want to reflect on something important in my life, and give across a message that if people are feeling the same way that I am, it’s okay.” It’s hard to believe, but Ruel’s story is just beginning – and the next chapter looks brighter than ever.

Pre-order Bright Lights, Red Eyes above and stay tuned for more from Ruel coming soon.

About Ruel

At a young age, Ruel’s resume reads like that of a seasoned global superstar, and the Sydney-bred, London-born vocalist is quickly becoming one of this generation’s most influential artists. With half a billion streams, over 1.4 million followers on Instagram, three sold-out world tours and five Platinum plaques under his belt, Ruel is a trailblazer who’s far exceeded the omnipresent hype and overwhelming fan frenzy that surrounds him globally. Ever since his rustic demos landed in the ears of M-Phazes back in 2015, Ruel has been impossible to ignore.

Ruel made his official debut in 2017 with “Golden Years” alongside M-Phazes, and just three months later, he became the youngest artist to ever appear on triple j’s Like A Version. His next single “Don’t Tell Me” further highlighted his rich vocals and defiant lyricism, catching the attention of Elton John who praised Ruel as “the most amazing voice that I’ve ever heard from a male singer at 14 years of age.”

Ruel was invited to perform alongside world-class talents like Khalid, also becoming the second ever Australian billed performer on Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival. Ruel also performed at the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, streaming to 1.4 billion viewers worldwide. Also, he’s sold out 3 world tours across America, Europe and Australia in a matter of minutes.

At the tail end of 2018, Ruel also won the Breakout Artist award at the ARIAs, becoming the youngest artist to do so. He quickly re-emerged in 2019 with single “Painkiller,” which went 2x Platinum before recruiting Denzel Curry on the remix. Subsequent singles “Real Thing” and “Face To Face” also went Platinum, while Ruel spent 2019 further solidifying his live portfolio. In his hometown, he became the youngest artist to sell out the Sydney Opera House, twice.

4 Ways to Grow Your Beauty Website

By Katie Lundin

Whether you sell make-up, haircare, or skincare products, run a beauty salon, nail bar, barbershop, or spa… as a beauty industry insider, you know that looks are important.

This is especially true when it comes to the way people judge websites.

How a website looks is important. In fact, seventy-five percent of people judge the credibility of a business based on its website.

If your beauty website looks bad, it’s turning potential clients away.

Here are 4 proven techniques to help your beauty website win more customers.

1. Showcase your unique brand

Just as you help your clients to look the best version of themselves, your website design must showcase your brand’s unique identity.

This is especially important for new beauty businesses. If you’re putting together your business plan while preparing to start a new beauty business, don’t overlook the importance of creating a strong visual identity for your business.

After all, clients don’t want to look like everyone else. They want to showcase their own unique self. And, they look to see if your beauty business stands out in unique ways and offers something special and different.

For example, if your website uses a generic template and looks like thousands of other salons, nail care, or makeup sites, people won’t be able to differentiate you from your many competitors.

In fact, this is true for every aspect of your company’s brand identity, including your business name and your company logo. Both must be unique if you want to build a brand that stands out and attracts great clients.

The differentiating factors that make your business unique must be visible so that your clients and prospective clients (the people who are naturally attracted to your brand’s mission, aesthetic, and personality) can identify you.

A well-designed website will show what makes your beauty business unique and attract those clients.

And don’t be deterred by the price of custom website design. Some beauty business owners worry that the cost of website design can be prohibitively high.

It’s true that many design companies and agencies charge thousands of dollars for their services. But this isn’t universally true (crowdspring’s custom website designprojects start at just $899, including all fees).

Action items:

● Work with a strong design team to develop a brand-informed logo. Then use that logo as the guide for your website’s visual design and all subsequent visual branding.

● Prioritize customization – avoid generic web design templates that don’t allow you to customize.

● Choose fonts (no more than 2-3), colors, graphics, and photos, that evoke your brand’s personality.

● Include content on your website that speaks with your brand’s voice. Be sure to let your personality shine through.

2. Design your website for fast load speeds

As we emphasized in our guide on how to start a business,

Your website is one of your new business’s most important ambassadors and a crucial component of your marketing and branding strategy.

Between seconds 4 and 5 of your website’s load time, 20% of viewers have already left your site.

Not only that, the faster your website loads, the higher it ranks with search engines. So, the easier it is for people to find.

3. Make it easy for guests to book appointments

Are you a make-up artist, stylist, barber, or cosmetologist?

Then you need an integrated booking system for your website.

Service-oriented beauty businesses rely on bookings. But, managing your schedule takes time away from the tasks that actually get you paid – like cutting hair, applying makeup, or performing facials.

And guests have come to expect to be able to book online. The cat’s already out of the bag.

So, if your website doesn’t support online booking, it’ll look inferior to your competitors who do offer that convenient feature.

On the other hand, if you’re the first salon, nail bar, or barbershop in your market to enable people to schedule appointments online, you’ll have a natural advantage over your competition.

And, there are free salon-booking software apps! So, the cost isn’t a barrier. There’s no excuse not to impress potential customers with the convenience of online scheduling.

Action items:

● Check out these tried and true online booking options:

Fresha – This free online scheduling tool (formerly known as “Shedul”) is packed with features designed specifically for businesses in the beauty and wellness industry. There is also a paid version, but Fresha’s free service can definitely stand on its own.

Schedulicity – Schedulicity is another powerful online booking software. This service offers a la carte pricing that allows you to customize your service so you’re only paying for the features you need.

Timely – Timely claims to be the world’s smartest online booking software. You can test their claim yourself with their free trial. Once your trial is over, you can continue with Timely for low monthly rates tiered to grow with the size of your team.

● Choose an online booking service and integrate it with your website for easy, automated bookings.

● If you don’t currently sell custom-branded beauty products, consider adding your own unique line. Many manufacturers will let you private label their productsand you’ll just need to create custom packaging design to showcase your own unique brand.

4. Show your style and skill with photos

Concrete examples are more powerful than vague promises.

Every beauty business claims to make people look good. But, including pictures of your work (or people wearing your products) on your website shows that you can really deliver.

And, beauty is subjective. Your products or services aren’t for everyone. They’re for the people who share your aesthetic.

Posting pictures that showcase your brand’s unique style will attract customers who share it. So, you’ll gain, and retain, more customers.

So, incorporate photos into your website that demonstrate your skill and your style. Show potential clients that you can be trusted to make them look and feel beautiful.

Action items:

● If you’re a freelancer, create a gallery showcasing your best manicures, hair color clients, or make-up applications. (And always ask permission before sharing any photos of your clients.)

● Do you run a salon or spa? Then dedicate a page to each team member and include a gallery of their best work.

● If you manufacture beauty products, encourage your clients to share pictures of themselves wearing your products on Instagram with a custom hashtag. Then embed a widget into your website that automatically displays those photos.

● Allow customers to upload pictures with their product reviews.

If you want to be the next Sephora or Glossier, you must have stellar branding. And, that includes a professional, custom website that shows the world what your beauty brand is all about.
