How to Control Your Alcohol Intake and Drive More Responsibly

The next time someone says, ‘Fancy a couple of coldies?’ Take a moment before answering yes. Will you be driving after?

The legal BAC limit for driving in Australia is 0.5%, lower than many countries but still not enough for curbing road fatalities.

How does drink driving affect us?

According to Australia’s peak road transport and traffic agency, Austroads, the country sees 200 deaths annually due to drunk driving. This figure constitutes 18% of all deaths on the roads. Of course, this is accompanied by thousands of injury cases.

The national consensus is still debating on lowering the BAC limit to zero, along with other measures such as more roadside random tests, immediate licence suspension, increasing alcohol prices, and improving support for alcohol-dependent drivers.

What should you do?

Understand that the risks of drinking and driving are quite high. It can lead to accidents and serious harm, embarrassments, and health problems later in life.

Better still, learn how to control your alcohol intake and drive more responsibly. Here are some simple steps on how to do that.

1. Know your limit

The Australian Guidelines on drinking alcohol state that a healthy person should not drink more than 10 standard drinks a week and/or 4 standard drinks a day. Of course, the amount of alcohol you can handle depends on your age, weight, gender, and mood too. If you aren’t aware of your limit, follow the ‘less is more’ policy.

2. Controlled assessment helps

Assessing your alcohol intake will show how much you drink daily, and when exactly things tend to get out of hand. You can further control this by avoiding situations that trigger drinking, purchasing less alcohol amounts, etc. This will also help you to calculate your safe limit.

3. Remember to eat and pause

It’s always a good idea to eat before and also while you drink. Empty stomach allows the alcohol to hit the bloodstream faster. A full stomach will also control your alcohol intake. Pace yourself and pause to count your drinks and also, take regular sips of water in between.

4. Plan your journey back home

Even when you drink below the BAC limit, alcohol still impairs senses. Driving responsible after drinks is most fruitful when a sober friend can drive you back, or give a ride. Opt for public transportation. Or better still, leave the car at home to avoid temptation.

5. Don’t fall for peer pressure

There is no obligation to keep up with friends or other company in terms of drinking. Stay clear of drinking games, situations, and people who encourage binge drinking.

6. Be proactive about alcohol control

Learn to say, ‘No’. Don’t drink and drive yourself, and neither let anyone else do it. If you find it hard to control your drinking, be ready to accept that there might be a problem. In that case, consider seeking help. It’s better than living with the possibility of harm.

The law should be strict but sometimes there is also a need for support. Specialized law firms such as Astor Legal understands this and can help you reduce your fines, disqualification periods, and even help you avoid imprisonment.

DON’T PLAY W/ FIRE

By Gabriella Scerbo

Fireworks: Usually an item associated with July 4th or any sort of celebration. Every year around the major cities hundreds of people gather to watch fireworks, and are in awe of their multicolors, and unique pulsating sounds. Another thing that many love about fireworks, is the excuse to sip a cold beer (maybe a little too much) but overall spend quality time with family. This time of celebration and positive correlation seems to be out the window when discussing fireworks in the political climate of 2020.

Fireworks are illegal in many states without a permit, and police departments across the country are cracking down on the abundant use. Law enforcement is once again restating the ordinances regarding these fireworks. In Illinois, the Police Department posted a Facebook update, once again reminding residents of the policy. In June, New York City firework complaints have more than tripled within the past year. This influx in fireworks is due to the fact that large gatherings are cancelled, such as concerts, sporting events and many other celebrations due to the spread of COVID-19.

Another theory regarding the influx of fireworks, are the protests following the death of George Floyd. In New York City and major cities around the country, thousands protest police brutality and years of systemic racism, and racial injustice faced by the Black Community. The Black Lives Matter movement have also been involved in directly using fireworks in addition to peaceful protests, and a larger national conversation about the system injustices.

Pasadena, California has seen a 400% increase of fireworks related complaints. Around 40% (2 in 5) of Americans plan on buying their own fireworks this year, due to the cancellations of many celebrations due to COVID-19. In the Big Apple, Firework complaints have rose to 13,109 compared to just 32 last year.

Not only are these fireworks having a large affect on humans, they also affect everyone’s favorite member of their families: pets.

Although the fireworks seem to glisten in the sky, used for either boredom or to reiterate an important movement, they can also cause serious physical injuries. These effects include loss of fingers, hands, and even tissue damage on the face. Fireworks should be left to people that know how to properly use them.

Not only are the fireworks causing physical injuries to many, they are also causing light pollution and air pollution, which has a direct negative effect on the environment. These fireworks put harmful chemicals and smoke in the air, these chemicals have negative implications such as coughing, shortness of breath, and even heart attacks.

The loud noises are causing concern to frontline workers during the pandemic, looking to get a good night’s rest from another stressful day in the hospital. As well as officer workers, eager to get back to some sense of normalcy during Phase 2 of reopening following COVID-19.

Not only are these fireworks having a large negative on humans, they also affect everyone’s favorite member of their families: pets. Similar to humans, the loud noise is not the most pleasing one, and can cause mental problems. Dogs specifically, when hearing these noises tend to self mutilate, due to anxiety.  Smaller dogs, such as border collies, Australian Shepherds and chihuahua’s can be especially sensitive.

Unfortunately, the amount of pets that are entered in the shelters post July 4th are around 80% higher  than normal. Imagine the potential increase in  shelters with the fireworks in 2020.

These astronomical numbers will be steadily increasing if this firework predicament is not properly taken care of. Many amazing pets lives will be destroyed, as well as there loving families.

In the grand schemes of things, fireworks are a very small issue in the sea of large issues. However, right now they have been brought into the spotlight as yet another concern for the safety of major cities around the country.

Complaint Against Google, Facebook, Twitter, Apple and Instagram

Just recently, Larry Klayman who is the founder of Judicial Watch and Freedom Watch and former U.S. Department of Justice prosecutor, announced filing a class action lawsuit which alleges social media giants such as Google/YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Apple, and Instagram conspired by entering into an explicit or tacit agreement, in parallel to each other, to restrain trade in violation of Section 1 of the Sherman Act. See Freedom Watch v. Google/YouTube et. al (Civil Action Number 18-cv-2030, U.S. District Court for District of Columbia).

Complaint alleges intent and effect of this agreement in restraint of trade is to quash and/or limit advocacy by conservatives and pro-Trump pubic interest groups, advocates, and others to further leftist anti-conservative agendas of these social media giants and help bring down the Trump presidency, nullifying the vote for the president by millions of citizens. These alleged illegal and anticompetitive actions are an integral part of the so-called “resistance” to remove President Trump and install a leftist government over the 50 states.

The class action complain can be found here.

The complaint is first of its kind in the wake of mourning proof that social media giants are illegally restricting free speech of conservatives, and promoting free speech from leftist sources such as CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and others.

“Our inert and compromised Attorney General Jeff Sessions is unwilling to take strong action through his Antitrust Division as he has become the darling of the left given his refusal to prosecute Hillary Clinton, John Brennan, James Clapper, James Comey, prominent Democrats and others who have allegedly committed crimes, while giving Robert Mueller carte blanche to proceed with his ‘witch hunt,” says Klayman.

“Freedom Watch seeks to right this discrimination against conservatives by social media giants. Our complaint asks for injunctive relief and over a billion dollars in damages, including punitive damages, pales in comparison to what the Commission of the European Union has already levied against such social media giants as Google for alleged ruthless tactics in stifling competition.”

OXYGEN’S SNAPPED x AILEEN WUORNOS

America’s first female serial killer, Aileen Wuornos, captivated the nation’s attention when she was found guilty for brutally murdering six men, and confessing to a seventh between November 1989 to November 1990. In the two-hour “Snapped: Notorious – Aileen Wuornos,” premiering Sunday, March 25th at 6pm ET/PT, Oxygen Media takes a closer look at the turbulent trial that was the first of its kind. Was Aileen Wournos afforded a just trial, or did the media frenzy cause unfair bias among the jury? For a sneak peek, please visit here.

Aileen Wuornos was a self-professed “highway prostitute” who rose to infamy when she was arrested for the deaths of several men in central Florida. Aileen ultimately confessed to the killings as self-defense, but the jury unanimously convicted her on six counts of first degree murder and sentenced her to death. The special will uncover everything from the complexities of the case to the biased media reports. Through new interviews with those closest to Aileen and her trial, the special will delve deeper into two vastly different perspectives – was she the cold-blooded killer the country made her out to be? Or was she an abuse victim that was forced to protect herself?
