Senate Healthcare Negotiations... (Health)

Senate Healthcare Negotiations… (Health)

“Disaster” – That’s how one conservative aide familiar with Senate healthcare negotiations characterized Thursday’s meeting of the working group. Despite the publicly upbeat tone from many of the senators after they wrapped up, from what Daily on Health has been able to gather from sources familiar with what went on inside the meeting room, deep rifts opened up on Medicaid, Obamacare regulations and the timing of any repeal. In the meeting, led by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., presented ideas that would keep Obamacare’s subsidy and regulatory structure intact through 2020, and provide an additional $15 billion in funding to shore up insurance markets in the meantime. That was unsettling to conservatives led by Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, who are skeptical that repeal would ever happen if it were delayed until after the next presidential election. But Sens. John Thune, R-S.D., John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Rob Portman, R-Ohio, were more sympathetic. More centrist members of the group also spoke of tightening the rules for regulatory waivers, forcing states to enact measures to auto-enroll residents in health plans before they can be eligible to apply to get out of enforcing Obamacare’s rules. This was another non-starter for conservatives in the group, who have another ally on the regulatory front in Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. Additionally, as reported earlier in this week, Sen. Pat Toomey and Portman were instructed by McConnell to hash out a compromise on Medicaid, but talks got nowhere, as Portman still wants a more gradual transition off Obamacare’s expansion and has been presenting a plan from Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., that would allow federal Medicaid payments to grow at medical inflation plus 2 percent. But Toomey and the rest of conservatives want to see its growth slowed down and an accelerated timeline for unwinding the expansion. Other sources, however, pushed back against this dire portrait of talks, portraying things as more unsettled, and the various proposals being presented as more discussion points than firm lines in the sand.

Aetna CEO says single-payer debate should happen: CEO Mark Bertolini pointed to public-private partnerships, like those of Medicare Advantage and Medicaid Managed Care. “The government doesn’t administer anything,” he said. “The first thing they’ve ever tried to administer in social programs was the ACA, and that didn’t go so well. So the industry has always been the back room for government… But if we want to turn it all over to the government to run, is the government really the right place to run all this stuff? And that’s the debate that needs to be had. They could finance it, and if there is one financer, and you could call that single-payer.”

Kaiser Permanente plans to stay in Obamacare exchanges: Bernard Tyson, chief executive of insurer Kaiser Permanente, said Thursday that the company would be sticking with the Obamacare exchanges, despite acknowledging that they were unstable.

Republicans search for ways to reduce insurer premiums: The 14-member healthcare working group met briefly Thursday to discuss Obamacare’s insurance regulations, including protections for pre-existing conditions and essential health benefits. Senators said they discussed how to stabilize the exchanges, both in the short- and long-term, and touted certain aspects of the House plan, including the option of turning to risk pools to help cover costs of people with pre-existing conditions.

Delaware judge allows Cigna to walk away from merger with Anthem: The proposed $48 billion merger was initially challenged by the Justice Department under the Obama administration on antitrust grounds, and the latest decision marks the second time that a judge has opposed the merger. Anthem has until noon Monday to decide whether to appeal to Delaware’s Supreme Court, or it otherwise may have to pay out $15 billion to Cigna. Anthem also has asked the Supreme Court to weigh the case.

Budget chief Mick Mulvaney: “person who sits at home, eats poorly and gets diabetes” is “not the same as Jimmy Kimmel’s kid”: Mulvaney said the president was considering executive order actions that he could take on drugs and cast the Congressional Budget Office as inadequate at projecting the costs and uninsurance rates for legislation. Appearing on the panel with him was Peter Orszag, who was OMB director for a time under Obama. Orszag defended the scorekeeping agency as well as Obamacare. Mulvaney was asked what he thought of the “Jimmy Kimmel test.” “I do think it should meet that test,” Mulvaney said of a new healthcare law. “We have plenty of money to deal with that. We have plenty of money to provide that safety net so that if you get cancer you don’t end up broke … that is not the question. The question is, who is responsible for your ordinary healthcare? You or somebody else?” He said the debate centered on whether others should pay the burden of paying for someone’s healthcare. “That doesn’t mean we should take care of the person who sits at home, eats poorly and gets diabetes. Is that the same thing as Jimmy Kimmel’s kid? I don’t think that it is.”

Walls fall in on Obamacare: From the Washington Examiner editorial board: “It’s not just a Republican talking point that Obamacare is falling apart. Democrats’ efforts to shift all blame to President Trump and his party are misleading. Obamacare is crumbling because it was poorly made.”

Trump health bill really unpopular, poll shows: Twenty-one percent of Americans approve of the Republican bill to repeal and replace Obamacare that passed the House last week, a modest 4 percentage point improvement over the last poll…The poll showed that 56 percent of Americans disapprove of the House bill, called the American Health Care Act, while 23 percent didn’t answer the question or said they didn’t know. The poll also gave key insights into feelings on major sticking points over healthcare.

VA whistleblowers say retaliation getting worse under Trump: Whistleblowers who have been in their share of battles with the Department of Veterans Affairs under the Obama administration say retaliation is getting worse under President Trump, despite Trump’s assurances in April that he was taking steps to protect employees who point out problems at the troubled agency. Several whistleblowers and sources with experience investigating the VA told the Washington Examiner that while Trump seems to want to fix the broken VA, his goals, including whistleblower protection, are largely being ignored. “The VA’s going after these guys with a vengeance,” said Eric Hannel, former staff director for the House Veterans’ Affairs subcommittee on oversight and investigations, who is still in contact with whistleblowers around the country.

The healthy eating movement has been thriving in the U.S. and it accelerated under the Obama administration as First Lady Michelle Obama picked nutrition as her cause.

Los Angeles Announces Tourism and Visitor Spend Milestones During National Travel and Tourism Week

Industry Boosts L.A. Economy as Record 47.3 Million Visitors

Spent All-time High $21.9 Billion in 2016
LOS ANGELES (May 9, 2017) – Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board (L.A. Tourism) today announced that Los Angeles County’s record-setting 47.3 million visitors injected an all-time high $21.9 billion into the local economy in 2016. The new visitor spend milestone is $1.3 billion more than 2015’s total, an increase of 6.3%. The celebratory announcement coincides with National Travel and Tourism Week, an annual event established by Congress and organized by the U.S. Travel Association to champion the power of travel.

Traveler spending generated $33.6 billion in total economic impact for Los Angeles County (including the induced and indirect benefits). Tourism contributed more than $2.65 billion in state and local tax revenues in 2016.

A key economic driver in Los Angeles, tourism supports 510,500 jobs within the Leisure & Hospitality sector – one of the county’s largest and strongest sectors. The industry contributed to the addition of 21,400 new jobs last year, a 4.4% year-over-year increase.

“This is L.A.’s moment. We’re breaking tourism records every year, and this is only the beginning,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “This National Travel and Tourism Week, we are celebrating our thriving tourism industry and looking ahead at the limitless opportunity to come — with attractions like the Lucas Museum and a potential Summer Olympics that will cement Los Angeles’ standing as the world’s best destination.”

“These remarkable achievements mark a sixth straight year of industry milestones, reaffirming tourism as a powerful driver of economic growth for Los Angeles,” said Ernest Wooden Jr., president & CEO of Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board. “We are thankful for each member of our diverse resident and hospitality community as their everyday commitment to rolling out our signature red carpet is what makes L.A. such a dynamic destination, where everyone is welcome.”

L.A. County’s average occupancy rate for 2016 reached 81.3%, surpassing 80% for the first time in County history with a record 29.2 million hotel room nights sold countywide. City of L.A. hotel visitors generated $268 million in transient-occupancy tax collections for the City, funds used for critical community services.

Los Angeles welcomed a record 47.3 million visitors in 2016 with 40.3 million domestic visitors and 7 million international visitors.

Extensive North American & International Headline Tour Announced

New York-based Australian producer & musicianNick Murphy has announced Missing Link, a new collection of tracks that bridge the sonic shift between Chet Faker and Nick Murphy. The 5-song EP is out today via Downtown Records / Interscope and available to stream / order here:http://smarturl.it/MissingLink.

Murphy will also bring his dynamic live show to stages across the globe through the end of the year, announcing an extensive world tour that features headline shows in North America, Australia and Europe. U.S. dates include this Friday’s show at Red Rocks with Bonobo, a headline performance at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium, an appearance at NYC’s Panorama Festival, and more. Murphy will also perform an exclusive residency at Sydney Opera House for Vivid LIVE next month. For tour details and to purchase tickets, visit http://missing.li/nk.

Missing Link opens with the first single “Your Time,” a moody, older recording featuring production from KAYTRANADA that just premiered as a World Record on Zane Lowe’s Beats1 show. Hear the track and interview with Lowe here. The EP continues to move through Murphy’s sound evolution from the voiceless distortion of “Bye” to the grand, escalating track “Forget About Me”—also premiered today on Lowe’s show—and “Weak Education,” the dance-influenced track closer. It’s the sound of Murphy exhaling.

The EP is Murphy’s first release since announcing last fall that he’ll record and perform under his given name and step away from his Chet Faker moniker. “Chet Faker was me trying to prove something to myself,” says Murphy. “But my tastes are pretty dynamic and I realized I’ve spent time resisting that. Now I want to put everything in. It’s not conceptual anymore. It’s just me, and it made sense to show that in a name. It feels like a rediscovery.”

After announcing the name change last fall and releasing two well-received tracks—“Fear Less” and “Stop Me (Stop You)”—he notes, “This huge wave came out and I broadened the framework. Instead of having to make finished tracks, I could just explore. That felt like the missing link between where I was and where I’m going now.” The Missing Link EP is a snapshot of that wave in motion. It is the ‘missing link’ between who he was as an artist and what’s next for him.

The trailer for the Missing Link EP, co-directed by Murphy and New York-based Australian filmmaker and musician Johann Rashid, was released last week and teases some of the EP’s forthcoming visual accompaniment. Watch the trailer here: http://youtu.be/yz4hf1qV73k. Murphy also recently released a short video interview with collaborator Dave Harringtonwhere he discusses the name change, creating his new music and more:http://youtu.be/KWNTwX5bfTA.

Rolls Royce Dawn (Auto)

Rolls Royce Dawn (Auto)

The Ultimate Cruising Machine

By Shin Takei

Autumn is the best time of the year for driving a convertible. The strong sunshine of summer is gone and a different scent permeates

the clean and crisp air.  For some of us the leaves turn color and beautiful fall scenery makes it that much appealing. What better convertible to cruise around in than a Rolls Royce Dawn?  All new this year, the Dawn is based on the same architecture as the Wraith but if you look closely many of the panels are not the same and the front is a totally new look with different bumpers and a lower grill. The car looks sleek with the top up or down and has beautiful proportions that make it a definitive Rolls Royce. The rear quarters are wider and the overall height is twice the height of the wheels. With the top up and wide C-pillars, the Dawn looks like a custom car. Powered by a 6.6 liter twin turbo V8 that produces 563 hp @5250 rpm with 605 lb-ft torque @ 1600 rpm, the Dawn is no slouch for a 5200 lb vehicle. The 8- speed ZF transmission is like the Wraith and its shift points are calculated by GPS connection anticipating the roads and curves coming ahead. All this translates to a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph. The engineers have designed a rigid structure to make sure the Dawn was free from any typical convertible shake.

But that’s not all what the Dawn is about. Unlike the sportier Wraith, the Dawn is an automotive statement that you cruise and glide around in. Open the carriage doors and a sumptuous interior adorned with the best leather and book matched wood veneers available assembled by craftsmen who have been

working at the factory several generations tickle your senses. Overall quality is impeccable throughout and the attention to detail is exemplary.  The back seat is deep, roomy and comfy and is a true four passenger convertible instead of a cramped 2+2. The rear deck reminiscent of a barchetta is bespoke to the choice of the owner as the rest of the car. Particular attention has been paid to the convertible top which maintains the same silence as the fixed roof Wraith up to 35 mph. The mechanism of the top is so smooth the engineers have coined it Silent Ballet and lowers in just 22 seconds. The French-weave top contributes to the silence as it aids in aerodynamic efficiency. The Spirit of Ecstasy rotary controller is your access to the 10.3 inch screen and multi-function navigation system which is a vast improvement over previous systems.

So how does it drive? Gliding is a more appropriate word when describing the ride of the Dawn. Make no mistake, this is a German

engineered automobile built to the standards of British tradition and craftsmanship. It may be smooth as butter but it has a very stable ride and it doesn’t float or waddle so you’re not tossed around in the cabin. It’s a serene ride so you can hear the fallen leaves rustling on the pavement as you glide by smoothly and quietly. At freeway speeds, the Dawn is rock solid and there are no dramas. The 16 speaker Bespoke Audio has been engineered to give the best sound experience with the top up or down. At home in Beverly Hills, Monte Carlo, San Trope, Lake Cuomo or anywhere else, the Dawn is an automobile you want to show off and be seen in. It commands a presence like no other.

You don’t need the Starlight Headliner, an option on closed roof models because you can look above and see the real thing. As Torsten Mueller-Oetvoes, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars quoted: Like Eleanor Thornton, thought by many to be the inspiration behind the Spirit of Ecstasy, the Rolls-Royce Dawn will itself prove to be the muse that leads its owner to believe that at the start of the day, anything is possible.”

INFINITI QX30 SPORT

It’s a Mercedes, it’s a hatchback; no, it’s the Infiniti QX30 Sport crossover vehicle! There’s no coincidence that the new Infiniti QX30 Sport could be mistaken for its Mercedes-like design; we are merely witnessing the fruits of a flourishing partnership between Infiniti’s parent companies, Renault-Nissan and Mercedes Benz’s parent company, Daimler AG.

Closely resembling Mercedes-Benz GLA Class crossover, the QX30 shares the same DNA – engine, transmission, chassis and some interior pieces but with an Infiniti twist – performance. Powered by a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine manufacturing 208 horsepower and 258 pound-ft torque to the front wheels with a 7-speed automatic dual clutch transmission; yep, you’re in an Infiniti. The sport model coming 15mm lower to the earth featuring 19″ aluminium alloy wheels and cross drilled front brake rotors which provide the car with stop-and-go agility from approaching a corner at high speeds to quickly braking in traffic.

The cabin complements the sporty soul of this crossover vehicle with Mercedes influenced in-dash system and transmission/shift control staying true to the Infiniti marquee. The seat controls, AC controls, key fob and the TFT information screen between the gages on the cluster are all Mercedes Benz. However, Infiniti went a step further with race-inspired zero gravity seats, reducing fatigue by up to 30% by evenly distributing the driver’s body weight, centering all passengers while accelerating through corners.

At $43,735.00, the Infiniti QX30 Sport marks its territory as one of the most nimble and well-appointed vehicles within its market segment. The perfect luxury entry-level SUV for a millennial dwelling in a metropolis with friends and perhaps a toddler in tow.
