Show your heart some love on more than just Valentine’s Day

By Nutrition Myth Buster Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., CNS

Experts aren’t sure why people are more likely to have a heart attack during the winter than any other time of year. If Valentine’s Day and Heart Health Month are inspiring you to take better care of your ticker, here’s big news.

A 12-month human clinical study involving 577 participants conducted in Malaysia reveals we aren’t doing our hearts any favors by eating a high-carb diet. Researchers looked at different patterns of eating, from high-fat to low-fat, high-carb to low-carb, and measured the effect each way of eating had on the risk for heart disease. Turns out, fat intake didn’t move the risk needle one way or the other. The higher carb diets, on the other hand, were associated with greater cardiovascular ris.

I wasn’t the least surprised by this study’s findings! I’ve been saying for years that fat has been wrongly demonized. If anything, it’s sugar – not fat – that’s causing us to go off the metabolic rails. In this study, low-carb diets performed considerably better than high-carb diets.

The study found that healthy adults who ate higher proportions of carbohydrates (compared with the amount of proteins or fat they consumed) tended to develop several elevated risk factors for cardiovascular disease including high blood pressure and more plaque-promoting small LDL cholesterol particles. Higher proportions of dietary fat intake were not associated with elevating these risk factors.

A hormone called insulin – and a condition called insulin resistance – are at the core of pre-diabetes, and are turning out to be early warning signs for heart disease. And the results of this study showed that insulin measures were considerably better when people ate diets with a lower amount of carbs, and that was true regardless of the amount of fat consumed.

It’s insulin resistance, not cholesterol, that is the root cause of heart disease and, according to other research, probably many other chronic underlying conditions plaguing our world.

The good news is that insulin resistance is treatable, preventable and mostly reversible by diet alone. It’s time we get off the toxic diets that are causing this condition in the first place! It’s time we understand that saturated fat and cholesterol are not the problems. When you remove that outdated thinking, the current dietary guidelines collapse like a house of cards.

What’s good for the heart is good for the brain, and vice versa. I haven’t found one exception to that case. The right diet for the heart looks exactly like the right diet for the brain. And sadly, the  diet we SHOULD be eating is exactly the opposite of the diet we’ve been told is heart-healthy.

Easy, no-fail heart-healthy eating changes

Most attempts to eat healthier fail quickly because the changes are too big and unmanageable. Instead of trying to completely overhaul your diet, start by making a few small changes. Here are a few simple suggestions that may have a healthy impact on your heart:

First, remove these items from your kitchen:

  • Corn oil and canola oil. These seed oils are filled with omega-6 which is very pro-inflammatory.
  • Sugar. Let’s be realistic. I know you’re probably not going to give up your favorite sweets entirely. But be kind to your heart by restricting those goodies to just a few days a month.
  • Canned soups, salad dressings and pasta sauces. These are often loaded with hidden sugars and a ton of sodium. Instead of relying on these cooking shortcuts, do an internet search for simple recipes you can make from scratch.
  • White flour and white rice. These are heavily processed and raise your blood sugar almost as much as pure sugar. And – don’t shoot the messenger – products made with ‘whole grains” don’t do much better. Whole grains still raise blood sugar, and still contain gluten, so they may not be the solution for everyone.

Then, add these items to your fridge and pantry:

  • Palm oil. You can find this online and in specialty markets. Millions of people around the world use it as their everyday cooking oil. Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil is rich in nutrients such as brain- and heart-healthy vitamin E tocotrienols.
  • Butter. This was never bad to begin with! It was banished from our tables because of our ill-advised fear of saturated fats. So we replaced it with something much worse!
  • Stevia and monk fruit. These are natural sweeteners that have no effect on your blood sugar.”
  • Nuts: People who eat more nuts have lower BMIs. Their diets are higher in magnesium, higher in fiber, higher in poly- and monounsaturated fats, all of which can have a profound effect on your health. But nuts are also easy to overeat and contribute to weight gain, so just be careful about the amount you consume.
  • Egg yolks: What a relief that you don’t have to suffer through one more tasteless egg white omelet! The advice to eat egg white omelets is way past its expiration date!
  • Dark chocolate (minimum 60% cocoa on the label): Chocolate contains cocoa flavanols; beneficial plant-based phytonutrients that support cardiovascular health.
  • Grass-fed beef. Grass-fed beef contains anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and less inflammatory omega-6s. It’s also free of hormones, a very big plus indeed. If you follow this suggestion, you’ll never have to worry about how much marbling is in your steak, or if your hamburger is 70/30 instead of 90/10 or 80/20. It won’t matter.
  • Dark meat poultry: The USDA data shows that there are mere milligrams of differences in the nutritional content of white and dark meat.

Here’s more advice: Stick with the basics. I’ve always said that the only rule you really need to follow in nutrition is to eat real food, food your great-grandmother would have recognized as food. Eat from what I call the “Jonny Bowden Four Food Groups”: food you could hunt, fish, gather or pluck. Stay away from overly processed and get back to basics.

That doesn’t mean you can never snack. Get organic (non-GMO) popcorn with minimal chemical processing. Get away from that chemical soup called “butter flavoring” and look for a microwave popcorn that contains palm oil, because palm oil doesn’t burn easily so your popcorn will taste better.

This year, you can finally make commitments to a heart-healthy diet that are easy to achieve. These tips will help you take better care of your heart throughout the winter and may become heart-healthy habits you’ll want to follow all year long.

American Attitudes Towards Immigrants

New Report: What Immigration Issues Do Americans Hold Sacred?

Why has immigration moved from being a mundane policy issue into one of the most hotly-debated topics in American politics today? Why was family separation so widely rebuked by the public and why is building a border wall so divisive?

Answers to these questions can be found in a new report published by the Center for Inclusion and Belonging at the American Immigration Council and Over Zero, titled: “What Immigration Issues Do Americans Hold Sacred? A Psychological Journey into American Attitudes Towards Immigrants” by Nichole Argo, Ph.D. and Kate Jassin, Ph.D.

The report—and the behavioral survey upon which it is based—overcome the limitations of traditional polling by digging deeper into how deeply respondents think about immigration issues, and why they feel the way that they do.

In March 2020, the authors conducted a nationally representative survey to examine 14 key immigration issues. They asked respondents to choose between an open or restrictive stance on each issue, then reflect on how much it mattered to them. They then asked how much money it would take for respondents to give up this value.

Stances that cannot be traded away for any amount of money are considered “sacred values.” They are processed in the brain differently than regular values, and efforts to argue or negotiate around them as if they are regular values are likely to backfire.

How sacred is immigration in the United States today to those on the right and the left? Very. This is one explanation for why the debate becomes so heated on immigration and easily divides Americans.

What are the beliefs, values, experiences, and attitudes most associated with open or restrictive sacralization and what can we do about it?

2021 Could Be A Record-Breaking Year In Horse Racing

There is so much to look forward to in 2021 around the world in horse racing. Over in the UK, it is just weeks until two of the biggest National Hunt meetings in the sport, the Cheltenham Festival, and the Grand National. Over in the States, the best three-year-olds will begin their Triple Crown campaigns.

Here is a look at where history can be made this year with some storylines you do not want to miss.

Al Boum Photo’s Gold Cup Hat-Trick

As you can see from the Cheltenham race results, Al Boum Photo has won the last two renewals of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, so goes into this year’s contest looking for a hat-trick.

Watch video HERE.

Not many horses in the history of the Cheltenham feature have won it on three occasions. Since 1960, only Arkle and Best Mate have managed that feat, so Al Boum Photo would be joining great company. Willie Mullins’ runner made a winning return to action in Savills New Year Day Chase at Tramore earlier this year, so a triple win could be looking promising. Al Boum Photo also tops the betting to prevail in the Blue Riband event in the sport again on March 19.

Tiger Roll Bidding For Grand National History

A month after the Cheltenham Festival, the Grand National takes center stage at Aintree. There is one horse people will be talking about ahead of this year’s race and that is Tiger Roll. The 2018 and 2019 winner will be vying to become only the second horse to win the marathon contest three times.

The great Red Rum won his third Grand National in 1977, in what was his fifth appearance in the race. This will be Tiger Roll’s third run in the world’s most famous steeplechase, so his achievement would arguably be even greater.

Like Red Rum in the 70s, Tiger Roll has a huge fan following. He is currently the +1400 favorite with the bookmakers after being handed a weight allocation of 11st 9lb by the handicapper. Only three horses in the race have been given more weight than the reigning champion, so he faces a tough task ahead.

Bob Baffert Could Win Seventh Kentucky Derby

Watch video HERE.

Legendary US trainer Bob Baffert matched Ben Jones’ record of six Kentucky Derby wins in 2020. Authentic prevailed at Churchill Downs in the race which is considered to be the “two most exciting two minutes in sports.”

Baffert has had some excellent three-year-olds in his yard over the last three decades. It will be interesting to see who the next star could be from his barn. The early evidence suggests that it could be Life Is Good who is the ante-post favorite for the 2021 Kentucky Derby.

Life Is Good made a winning start to his career at Santa Anita back in January. He looked a smart prospect when claiming the Grade Three Sham Stakes in a 1m contest. Big things are expected from the colt who may have a good chance of becoming the latest Triple Crown winner in the US.

Hopefully, 2021 lives up to be a great year in horse racing and at the end of it, there will be a number of champions who go down in the history books in the sport.

How to Make a Sploof [Guide]

Even though millions of Americans and almost all Canadian adults are legally allowed to use cannabis, not everyone is comfortable advertising the fact. If you live in a rented property, likely, your landlord isn’t happy to have stoner tenants stinking out their investment! Perhaps you have neighbors who complain about the whiff, or else you don’t want your parents knowing what’s going on in your room.

Whatever the reason, having a method of filtering out the smell of weed as you smoke is invaluable. As it happens, there is such a device! It is called a ‘sploof,’ and those who have made one swear that it is effective.

Why Does Marijuana Smoke Stink?

Before we learn how to make a sploof, let’s take a quick look at why your pot has such a distinctive scent. The age of the marijuana plant when harvested is arguably the most crucial factor. When weed is harvested earlier in its life cycle, it tends to have a less skunky aroma, especially when smoked. If you smoke cannabis that is ‘older’ before being cured and dried, it usually emits a more pungent odor.

There are thousands of strains, some of which have very distinctive scents. However, for the uninitiated, the dried cannabis plant offers a piney skunk aroma when lit and smoked. In the main, you’ll ascertain the difference between strains before combustion. Herb connoisseurs love the fresh scent of marijuana when they first purchase it. At this stage, it can have an array of odors, including lemon, lime, strawberry, diesel, plum, or pine.

Overall, you can thank the hundreds of terpenes contained in cannabis for its overall scent. You will find the terpenes secreted in the same glands that produce cannabinoids such as CBD and THC. These oils help distinguish one strain from another. Repeating isoprene molecules make up terpenes. As a result, they are volatile, easily combustible compounds. The traditional method of smoking cannabis typically results in the combustion of terpenes.

The skunky aroma you get from weed potentially comes from a metabolic product of a precursor to acetyl coenzyme A. This particular fragment has a smell akin to that of appalling sewer gas. If this theory is correct, it helps explain why we get such a strong scent from combusted marijuana. Others claim that myrcene, one of the most predominant terpenes in a large variety of strains, plays a significant role in providing the skunky aroma.

If you have ever smoked marijuana, especially in a room with a few other people, you’ll know that the stink sticks to your skin, clothing, and hair. The odor mixes with the scents of smoke and fire and intensifies the natural odors (such as sweat) that we naturally produce. When you create a sploof, however, you can avoid all of this unwanted drama.

What Is a Sploof?

It is a homemade device that allows you to neutralize the telltale marijuana odor. While you are free to purchase one online, making one is quick, easy, and cheap, as you’ll see a little later on. When you smoke a blunt or joint, you release the smoke into the air. When you blow the smoke into a sploof, the smoke goes through a filtering agent and loses its famous stench.

As for the origins of the term, it is probably a combination of the words ‘spliff’ and ‘spoof.’ In case you were not aware, a spliff is a combination of tobacco and marijuana flower. If this prospect horrifies you, steer clear of Western Europe and the Caribbean because spliffs remain extremely popular in both regions! A spoof is a trick played on someone, although a ‘spoofer’ is an individual who bluffs and generally talks nonsense!

There is no good reason NOT to use a sploof and several reasons why you should:

  • A sploof is incredibly easy to make.
  • It filters out the smell of marijuana smoke, which makes it harder to detect.
  • It gives you a higher chance of enjoying a private session without your mom/landlord/partner/police finding out.
  • The smell doesn’t linger, so you don’t leave ‘evidence’ of your activities behind.

How to Make a DIY Sploof

To create a sploof, you need the following:

  • Scented dryer sheets
  • A paper towel tube or toilet paper roll tube
  • Rubber band, tape, or string
  • A pair of sharp scissors or a blade
  • A filtering agent such as activated carbon – not strictly essential but it makes a HUGE difference

Why do we need these ingredients?

Scented Dryer Sheets

It is highly likely that you have scented dryer sheets in your house. The infused odor helps hide the smell of marijuana smoke. Also, the thick weave of the material traps molecules that result in the well-known weed aroma. If you don’t have sheets at home, spend a few bucks and buy a packet.

Toilet Roll or Paper Towel Tube

We’re going to assume that you have toilet roll or paper towels in your home! Ideally, you’ll wait until you finish the paper. Otherwise, you have to waste it because you need the paper tube. Get rid of any tiny bits of paper that inevitably get stuck to the container before you begin. This tube is what you blow the smoke into.

The tape/rubber band/string is required to ensure the scented dryer sheets remain in place. You can use a plastic bottle as an alternative to the toilet paper tube.

Filtering Agent

Most DIY sploofs don’t bother with a filtering agent because the scented dryer sheet does a good enough job. However, adding something like activated carbon to the mix increases the effectiveness and longevity of your sploof.

The charcoal is extremely porous to the point where a gram has an actual surface area of approximately 3,000 square meters as determined by gas adsorption, despite being tiny! Incidentally, ‘adsorption’ relates to the adhesion of ions, molecules, or atoms from a dissolved solid, liquid, or gas to a solid surface. It means the charcoal has an incredible capacity to trap and hold the odorous molecules. Best of all, activated charcoal is easy to obtain and extremely inexpensive.

Making a Sploof – Step-by-Step

Now that you have the necessary ‘ingredients,’ it is time to create your magical marijuana smoke filtering device!

  1. Remove the remaining paper from the paper towel or toilet roll tube. If you are using a plastic bottle, cut it in half and keep the top part.
  2. Fill the inside of the tube or bottle with dryer sheets. As it isn’t necessary to pack them in tightly, you shouldn’t need more than four sheets.
  3. Take another dryer sheet, fold it, and put it over the end of the sploof. Secure it with string, tape, or a rubber band. At this point, your sploof is ready to go. Blow the smoke into the open end, and marvel at how your device filters the smell.
  4. If you are using activated charcoal, put it into the sploof after completing step #2. You only need to add a small amount. Then you tie the dryer sheet over the end.

That’s it! Once you have the requisite material, you can create a sploof in a matter of minutes.

Final Thoughts on Making a Sploof At Home

There are plenty of options if your goal is to control the odor emitted when smoking marijuana. Expensive choices include investing in an air filter or purifier. More affordable options include burning incense (although it is often associated with smoking weed), lighting scented candles, opening a window, and spraying everything in the room with Febreze!

However, there is no need to go through any of the above stress if you build a sploof. Among its many benefits is its versatility. As it is a container with holes at both ends, you have a variety of options. Apart from using a paper toilet roll tube or plastic bottle, you could also invest in a PVC pipe which will unquestionably last longer.

As for how long your sploof will last overall, it depends on the materials you use. The ‘classic’ option will lose its neutralizing power eventually. The precise longevity depends on how often you smoke, but you know it is time to change when you notice the odor of cannabis creeping into the room despite using the sploof. You might also see that the dryer sheets change color.

As you are using household items, throw your old sploof away and make a new one!

What Are the Side Effects of CBD Oil or Hemp Oil?

The use of CBD oil has become prevalent in the last few years, with more people than ever using it. The more people that start using it, the more others begin to see the appeal themselves, leading to an ever-increasing trend of CBD popularity.

One thing that a lot of people struggle with, however, is the potential side effects of CBD oil. As regular cannabis is well-known for having a myriad of side effects through its high, many people think that CBD might induce the same problems.

So, what are the side effects of CBD oil?

What Is CBD Oil & How Does It Work?

To understand CBD oil’s specific side effects, we first need to know how CBD oil works, to begin with.

When a person imbibes CBD, it reacts with the endocannabinoid system, which is the health system within the body that controls a myriad of different functions.

While the precise nature of the ECS is still being researched, a number of studies have found that the ECS, and indeed CBD itself, is able to trigger a variety of different effects.

For example, a study by Nagarkatti et al. found that CBD can trigger an anti-inflammatory response in the ECS. This allows people to actively control their inflammation response, which is especially useful for those suffering from conditions that result in inflammation, like arthritis.

CBD’s interaction with the endocannabinoid system, specifically its interaction with the cannabinoid receptors, allows it to induce a myriad of effects.

However, some of these effects might be construed as side effects depending on what the user was looking for when they did CBD.

What Kinds of Side Effects Can You Expect?

CBD oil doesn’t really have particular side effects, especially when compared to conventional drugs. Other drugs, like strong pain medications, have side effects that are not related to their intended impacts. Meanwhile, CBD’s generalized effect on the body means that it doesn’t really have many ‘unintended’ consequences.

When a person takes CBD oil, they are likely to notice a myriad of different effects. If you’re taking CBD oil for a particular purpose, though, then there are some effects you might not want.

For example, if a person were to try and take CBD oil for its anti-inflammatory properties, they might not want to experience the lower blood pressure that it can cause, according to a study by Jadoon et al.

The thing is that the side effects of CBD oils are not really worth worrying about for the majority of people because the products are actually relatively mild. While the idea of a person’s blood pressure being reduced due to taking CBD oil might seem frightening, it isn’t really sufficient to cause problems.

A person should consider worrying if they already suffer from low blood pressure or if they are already taking medication that induces low blood pressure.

The main thing to worry about with CBD oil is the fact that you will notice all of its effects, whether you want to or not.

Final Thoughts on the Side Effects of CBD Oil

CBD oil is something that is definitely pretty scary for newcomers, especially considering its relatively recent rise in popularity.

However, while taking a new thing is never easy, most potential users can rest easy knowing that there aren’t really any side effects worth worrying about.

For those looking to get started in trying to buy CBD oil on purekana, the best advice is to make sure that only brands that offer trustworthy, reputable products are considered. Brands like PureKana offer not only high-quality CBD products but will also ensure that reputable lab reports back up their products.

These lab reports are essential, especially for those concerned with any potential side effects of CBD oil. By knowing the precise composition of any product you are using, a user can make an informed decision about what they are putting in their body.

Coming 2 America

ESSENCE MARCH+APRIL TRIPLE COVERS FEATURE STAR-STUDDED CAST OF THE HIGHLY-ANTICIPATED COMING 2 AMERICA – INCLUDING EDDIE MURPHY, ARSENIO HALL, JERMAINE FOWLER, KIKI LAYNE AND BELLA MURPHY

Prepare the royal jet! Coming 2 America is finally arriving, with Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall and an all-star cast of returning and new faces—including Jermaine Fowler, KiKi Layne and Bella Murphy. Robertson talks to the cast about why this was the right time to do the sequel, their fave moments and what the film means to the culture:

  • EDDIE MURPHY ON WHAT THE FILM MEANS TO THE CULTURE: “Coming to America is one of my films that has really worked its way into the culture. People get dressed up as the characters for Halloween, and they still walk around saying catchphrases like ‘Sexual Chocolate.’ So many people grew up with Coming to America and have a lot invested in it, so I didn’t want to taint that…Once the ideas started coming together, it took about four or five years to get the script all the way right. Once we got it right, I knew it was time…”
  • ARSENIO HALL ON DOING THE SEQUEL: “A lot of people have posted about Coming to America and said things like, ‘Please don’t mess with my movie’ or ‘I don’t want no sequel!’ We’ve been pitched all kinds of ideas, but I remember reading the script in Eddie’s backyard and it was all making sense. That’s when I knew that this was going to be the sequel…”

As a fan of the original film, I was honored to be a part of this whole world—but when they told me how Lavelle becomes part of the story, I just laughed my ass off and thought, All right, let’s do it…”
  • SHARI HEADLEY ON WHAT AUDIENCES WILL LOVE: “I’m as excited as the audience and have no doubt that this will be a film that people will love. I’ll venture to say they’ll love it even more than the first one…”
  • WESLEY SNIPES ON JOINING THE FILM: “I was like, ‘Whatever the role is, I want to be in it.’ Later, I was told that I was going to be a General—but really, I could have played a zebra and been just fine…”

Counter-Strike: The Shooting Game Taking The World By Storm

Counter-Strike began life as a fan-made modification for Valve Corporation’s much-acclaimed title Half-Life 2. Created by Minh “Gooseman” Le and Jess “Cliffe” Cliffe, Counter-Strike was acquired by Valve in 1999 and saw its first retail release later on that year. Whilst it has never been the commercial behemoth that a series such as Call of Duty has become over the years, Counter-Strike has managed to establish itself as one of the most recognisable faces in the first-person shooter (FPS) genre of gaming, with three major sequels and various spin offs titles, the latest of which, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, was released back in 2012.

Valve have established themselves as one of the best in the business for continuing to support their games with constant tweaks and updates to keep things feeling fresh and optimised, and this has proven to be the cornerstone for Counter-Strike’s enduring popularity within the video gaming community.

It has also been one of the biggest driving forces for the Counter-Strike franchise being able to flex itself as the most successful FPS title in the world of competitive gaming, and a huge driving force behind its growth as a multi-billion dollar industry over the past twenty years. With the series continuing its soar in popularity ahead of 2021, here’s everything you need to know about Counter-Strike: the shooting game taking the world by storm.

Gameplay

The Counter-Strike series has built a legacy for emphasising team play, communication, planning and short sharp bursts of action, rather than the all-out action approach of competitor titles such as Call of Duty. Whichever game in the series you play, simply running around and trying to kill opponents is not an option at a reasonable skill level.

The game pits two teams of five players against each other on a map in a best of thirty match. Rounds last 1:55 and teams are split into either the T (Terrorist) or CT (Counter-Terrorist) side. Terrorists can win rounds by either killing the entire enemy team or successfully planting and defending a bomb until it detonates after a forty second countdown. There are two bombsites on every defusal map, and Counter-Terrorists can win rounds by either killing the enemy team before a bomb is planted, waiting out the round timer without the bomb being planted, or defusing the bomb once it has been placed.

Teams are given an economy for each round that they have to manage, meaning that planning ahead, saving weapons, choosing between armour, utility and weaponry each round can be a crucial factor in deciding the outcome of games even before a bullet is fired.

All these factors have helped Counter-Strike develop one of the highest skill ceilings found anywhere in the gaming world, and subsequently developed an hyper-competitive professional scene.

Counter-Strike In Esports

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is the latest game in the series and, despite being over eight years old now, has actually seen its numbers soar over the past year or so. Not only is it one of the most watched games on online streaming platforms such as Twitch.tv with hundreds of thousands of hours digested by viewers, but 2020 saw it peak past the one million concurrent player mark several times for the first time in its history. As of February 2021, the game averages roughly 24 million users a month, over double the amount recorded in 2016.

For the first time in the franchise’s history, Global Offensive was moved to a free to play model by Valve in 2018 and can still be picked up and played for absolutely nothing via Steam even today.

Naturally, with so many players and so much interest, the competitive scene for the game is one of the most heavily invested in and fleshed out in the entire Esports industry. CS:GO betting has become increasingly popular for events and tournaments right across the world and, thanks to the influx of investment from the likes of Intel, Monster, Alienware and even the United States Air Force, the standard for competition hosting has risen substantially over the past couple of years.

The very first Counter-Strike tournament was hosted in 2001 for the original game in the series at the Cyberathlete Professional League, and the likes of the World Cyber Games and Electronic Sports World Cup hosted Counter-Strike tournaments in the early to mid 2000s as the Esports industry grew. It wasn’t until the release of Global Offensive in 2012 however that the industry really began to ramp up, coinciding with the boom in popularity of games such as Dota 2 and League of Legends.

Valve began hosting the very first Major Championship for the game in 2013 at DreamHack Winter, and have gone on to host two annual tournaments ever since. These tournaments tend to carry with them a prize pool of $1 million dollars and are still regarded as the most prestigious events in the game to this day.

Planet Classroom Reflects on The Holocaust

In the new Planet Classroom podcast, young filmmakers reflect on the Holocaust and lessons to be learned about anti-semitism, racism and dehumanizing people of different races, religions and sexual identities.

The Holocaust survivors somehow got through one of the darkest periods in human history. Six million Jewish people were killed. GenZ are the last generation with the privilege to meet survivors. Young filmmakers Eva Suissa, Hank Schoen and Ian Kim joined Planet Classroom’s virtual host, Orb, to speak about lessons learned while making their film, “Hold the Sun in Your Hands: The Erika Jacoby Story”. The film, which won the Best Student Documentary at The American Pavilion Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at the Cannes Film Festival, is now screening on the Planet Classroom Network YouTube Channel.

Filmmaker Eva Suissa struggles with how anyone could have let the Holocaust actually happen, and believes that only art has “the unique capability” to express this “traumatic and horrible” chapter in human history. Her Co-Director, Hank Schoen, says the rise of white supremacists and politicians who support them scares him because people “still haven’t learned the lessons about anti-semitism and racism, about scapegoating and dehumanizing people of different races, religions or sexual identities.” Schoen believes however that their film offers “hope” and “a belief in people’s ability to change and redeem themselves.”

WoW Classic: The Big Finale

Measuring Success

With all of the original content being added to World of Warcraft (WoW), and the next possible Classic expansion pack being announced in a manner of weeks, it’s a good place to look back at all of the experiences we’ve had with the game. It’s not a question of if the game is worth it or not because, of course, it is worth it. It’s more of a question of: Did this version of the Vanilla game patch live up to your expectations? The experience of playing this game was a rollercoaster, and not everything went well with the first try. That being said, you have to admit, it was pretty epic. The game stood the test of time these past 12 months, though many had doubted that the hype would last, even the game’s own developers.

The legendary server queues lasted for a while. Respected forum experts had predicted that it would only take a month until the masses will stop flooding into the game, when their first month of subscription ends. However, the experts and prophets were wrong–huge queues lasted until November 2019, when they finally began to thin out. By that time, the developers opened up a few new servers, which, weirdly enough, nobody really visited. They also increased the server’s capacity to accept more players. Still, the hype hasn’t faded away for some time, it was revived for a second wave when the quarantine kicked in. All responsible workers who moved to work from home often mistook the WoW shortcut with other work-related shortcuts on the desktop, which also increased its popularity. Based on all of those factors, the experiment with reviving Vanilla Wow was successful.

The Spirit of Vanilla

What a lot of players liked about experiencing this older version of the game is the feeling of playing a true RPG. All of the older mechanics in the game that made it more difficult and not very player-friendly at the same time encourages players to really get in the shoes of their chosen characters. It’s hard to get the same feeling in Retail (another WoW expansion) with all of the systems and mechanics that make the game’s interaction with the fantasy world as seamless as possible. The Classic game mode feels nostalgic, while also giving gamers lots of new memories like taking part in the server’s opening, or realizing what it means to farm yourself to sleep. Many gamers witnessed the opening of the Ahn’qiraj Gates opening for the first time, which in itself was one of the most essential events in the history of this game. The paradox of the spirit of Vanilla is an interesting one.

On the one hand, you have the turtle-like speed of leveling in Vanilla, an almost meditative gameplay that creates a unique experience. On the other hand, in 2021, not a lot of us are ready to spend time in something as calm and tranquil. If 15 years ago, this game had too much content, today, it doesn’t have quite enough. We constantly desire to be entertained every second. That being said, there are a lot of ways to speed up the boring routine. One of the best methods to do so is using a WoW Classic boosting that speeds up the progress only when gameplay starts to feel like a drag, making World of Warcraft truly special.
