Spiro Exhibition

Ancient Mysteries Revealed: Groundbreaking Spiro Exhibition to Debut at The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum

The Spiro site contained one of the greatest collections of prehistoric American Indian artifacts ever discovered in the United States.

The Spiro Mounds are one of the United States’ most important ancient Native American sites, as well as an archaeological find unmatched in modern times. Yet, despite creating a sophisticated ancient culture, the Spiro people are nearly forgotten in the pages of history books. How did these incredible works of art and other treasures from all over North America end up hidden for hundreds of years, and why? Opening February 12, 2021 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, “Spiro and the Art of the Mississippian World” will seek to answer these questions and more in the first major presentation on the Spiro Mounds ever undertaken by a museum, representing the first, and possibly last, time these artifacts will be reunited from various collections across the country.

“We are incredibly pleased to announce this unparalleled exhibition, which will give proper honor and representation to the culture and historical impact of the Spiro people,” said Natalie Shirley, The Cowboy president and CEO. “Our staff has worked for years to create a world-class, exciting and collaborative presentation of a people who have been overlooked for too long.”

This exhibition will share the art, history and culture of the Spiro people through approx. 175 objects, as well as an accompanying publication, website, public symposium and panel discussion. It was created in collaboration with representatives from the Caddo and Wichita Nations, the descendants of the Spiroan people, and with contributions by 17 humanities scholars from nearly a dozen universities and museums from across the United States.

The Spiro Mounds were the location of one of the largest and longest episodes of looting at any American archaeological site in history—comparable to that of Mesa Verde in Colorado and, sadly, several others across the country. Both looting and New Deal/Works Progress Administration (WPA) archaeological excavations came together in a near-perfect storm at Spiro. In 1935, the public’s imagination was peaked when the Kansas City Star called the site’s discovery a “King Tut’s Tomb in the Arkansas Valley,” and identified it as the greatest source of Mississippian iconographic material ever found. Embossed copper plates, wooden sculptures, thousands of pearls and beads, large human effigy pipes and engraved shell gorgets and cups are just some of the items found at Spiro. In fact, nearly 90% of all known engraved shell created during the Mississippian period (900 – 1650 AD) was discovered at this one site. This exhibition will include the reunification of a range of items looted and archaeologically excavated at Spiro that have not been together since the early 1930s and 1940s.

“The quality and quantity of material found at Spiro is unprecedented,” said Eric Singleton, Ph.D., Museum Curator of Ethnology. “We are grateful to have the support of the Spiroan descendants, the Caddo Nation and the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes, as we prepare this exhibition. Without them, this exhibition would not be possible.”

The Spiroan people, along with other Mississippian groups across the eastern half of North America, created a world equal to that of the Aztec, Maya or Inca, consisting of trade networks and highly developed social, political and religious centers. The exhibition will explore the archaeology and history of Spiro and its relationship to other contemporaneous Indigenous communities in North and Central America, highlighting community development, religious and ceremonial activities, farming and hunting practices and daily life. It will also illustrate how ecological factors, specifically the occurrence of the “Little Ice Age” beginning in 1350 AD and lasting until 1650 AD may have led to the site’s decline and ultimate abandonment. The exhibition also showcases contemporary Indigenous art pieces that explore the ideas of origin and connect the art and artistry of the Spiro people to their modern descendants.

Following the exhibition, the online component and educational materials will be available on the Museum’s website and in our permanent Native American gallery. In addition, the Museum will give both the Caddo and Wichita Nations all interpretative materials to use at their discretion in their respective tribal museums.

The exhibition will debut at National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum February 12 – May 9, 2021, before traveling to the Birmingham Museum of Art (October 5, 2021 – March 11, 2022) in Birmingham Alabama, and the Dallas Museum of Art (April 15, 2022 – August 5, 2022), in Dallas Texas.

Beautyque NYC Releases Beauty Routine Survey Results

Beautyque NYC, a virtual shopping, beauty and wellness experience, unveiled its consumer survey results assessing “Beauty Consumer Trends: Has the Pandemic Changed Beauty Routines?” One of the largest results stemming from the survey is that nearly 75% of respondents indicated they have changed their beauty routines since the pandemic started.

Beautyque NYC Founder & Owner Sonia Khemiri explains why these trends have occurred: “For most of us, many aspects of our lives have changed since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as of March 2020. As a result, we’ve had to adapt our routines, habits, and lifestyles to fit the ‘new normal.’” She continues “Interested in seeing how consumers’ beauty habits have changed nowadays, Beautyque NYC developed a survey for consumers. We wanted to know, are they wearing more or less makeup than before? Do they purchase skincare more or less often? What are they looking for in the brands they support?”

Before the Pandemic

Before the pandemic, respondents said they bought their beauty products in retailers such as, Sephora/Ulta and Drug Stores (71.3%), from Amazon (43.9%), or directly from the brand’s website (45.2%).  Among the various Beauty categories, skincare, body care, hair care, and makeup were all used daily. Nail care and fragrances were often used. Lastly, tools & devices were reported to be sometimes used. They often purchased skincare, haircare, body care, and makeup, and sometimes bought fragrance, tools & devices, and nail care products.

During the Pandemic

Nearly 40 percent of the respondents indicated that their beauty routines have definitely changed as a result of the pandemic, while 36.8% answered that their routine has only somewhat changed, and 17.3% answered that their beauty routine has not changed.

Their place of preference for making the purchase is Amazon, Sephora/Ulta, and directly on the brand’s website.  Skincare and body care products are used daily, hair care is used often, and nail care, fragrance, tools and devices are all used sometimes.  Most of the products are purchased sometimes; however, none of them are purchased daily.

On average, 59% of respondents claimed to use makeup less often since the pandemic, and 30% uses makeup the same amount as before the pandemic.  In relation to skincare, nearly 50% of survey respondents use the same amount of time as before and just over 40% use skincare more often now. Fragrance and nail care items are used less often than before. Hair care, body care, tools and devices are all used for the same amount of time as before the pandemic.

About Makeup

Makeup consumers tend to buy products for a variety of aesthetic reasons.  The most used makeup products used on a daily basis as reported by survey respondents include mascara, eyeshadow, lip gloss, foundation, and concealer. Beautyque found that the largest percentage of survey responders, 72%, answered they wear it since it gives them a confidence boost. The second largest percentage of repsonders, 65.3%, said makeup makes them feel more beautiful. Finally, 55% of responders reported that they wear makeup to hide imperfections.“The vast majority of consumers use makeup as a means of improving their overall self-esteem and perception,” Sonia adds.

About Skincare

The most used makeup products used on a daily basis were reported to be cleanser/face wash, moisturizer, eye cream and serum. “These products are the foundation to a consistent skincare routine,” Sonia says.

About Purchase Criteria

Beautyque’s survey also assessed important factors when deciding whether or not to purchase a beauty product. Respondents reported the criteria most important in making the decision to purchase included the product having clean ingredients,  good reviews, and a reasonable price point.

“In terms of the brands our survey respondents support and purchase from: the price has to be reasonable, the product has to be cruelty-free, consist of high-performance formulas, made from clean and natural ingredients, and offer an inclusive shade range,” Sonia says. “Social media platforms, friends and family, and influencers are the top resources the respondents use to gain information on beauty trends along with researching beauty products online before making a purchase.”

Factors that affect their level of trust in a brand are knowing the brand’s founders’ story, hearing influencers mention it, and a well-known brand, Sonia adds. “Trust is derived from the brand’s reputation as a direct reflection of the products.”

These are definitely times of change for the beauty industry. “It is pertinent to keep an open eye on consumers’ behaviors and preferences,” Sonia advises. “Beautyque NYC strives to help indie brands reach their maximum potential and to deliver the best products to consumers.”

Beautyque NYC is a retail marketing platform conceived by French born, US-based female entrepreneur and indie brand founder Sonia Khemiri. In addition to the first ever beauty 3D storefront, Beautyque NYC provides an in-depth and interactive marketing platform for its more than 25 brands and 10,000 consumers.

In addition to taking its own polls with its beauty enthusiasts, Beautyque NCY also spearheads Brand Evaluation Programs for its brand members to provide them direct product feedback from a focus group testing process.

Survey respondents include 231 consumers* ages 18 and older provided insight to how and if their beauty routine has changed during the pandemic.

Sonia Khemiri QxA

Here at 360 Magazine, we spoke with Beautyque NYC Founder & Owner Sonia Khemiri about how Beautyque’s survey was conducted, future beauty industry trend predictions, and her best product recommendations for day and night skin routines:

How did you conduct your consumer survey?

The survey was conducted virtually through a detailed online form that we distributed to our subscriber base of beauty enthusiasts and consumers. We asked them questions regarding beauty trends at various times to see what has changed over the course of the pandemic.

How large of a study did you conduct? How many people were surveyed overall?

The study consisted of 231 responses*.

*From a total of 231 responses, 98.3% of 229 were females. The breakdown of age groups goes as follows: 35 to 44 years old (26.1%), 45 to 54 years old (23%), and 24 to 34 years old (20.8%).  The annual income of the groups starts with 47.3% of respondents having an income of $50,000 or less, 34.1% with an income of $50,000 to $99,000, and 15.9% with an income of $100,000 to $249,000.  The respondents were primarily from New York, California, Florida, Texas, and Pennsylvania.

What do you predict is the largest factor in beauty routine changes during the pandemic?

Based on the survey conducted, the largest factor that changed during the pandemic was how [many] more consumers developed a greater sense of awareness toward beauty and wellness products. Areas that consumers expressed their concern were on clean ingredients, sustainability, ease of application, and effectiveness. Additionally, their preference on where they buy their beauty routine products has changed significantly from retailers to online shopping.

As the pandemic begins to less across the US, do you predict these changes to be long-term or temporary?

We believe that some habits will definitely stick around even after the pandemic, such as at-home routines and buying online. The pandemic forced individuals to color their own hair, do their own nails, and perform their own facials. This change is predicted to be long-term due to convenience and cost-effectiveness. Online shopping allows consumers to perform more research on their products and grant them a greater access to new products that fit their needs, especially with all the digital development explosion during the pandemic such as VR, AR and AI. Even though brick-and-mortar stores are reopening across the U.S, we believe the shopping experience and the beauty routines built during the pandemic will be mixed in a way or another with offline experience and shopping.

What brands would you recommend to someone looking to start a beauty routine with high quality, cruelty-free products?

All the brands we have all carry high-quality products, but we will further elaborate on the cruelty-free brands.

For a night routine: we would always recommend to double cleanse with an oil-based cleanser and a water-based cleanser to remove all unwanted residue. For oil cleansers, the Musaclean Organic Pure Melt Cleansing Oil Gel from Kadalys will get rid of all oil-soluble impurities in the first wash. The second cleanser I would recommend is the Detox Cleanser +3 from Liftlab–this medical grade cleanser will clean and prep your skin for maximum skincare absorption. Next, I would use a Limited 2020 Edition Lotion by Yon-Ka Paris to treat the skin after double cleansing. For serums, the Australian Botanicals Pro-Aging Treatment Concentrate Serum from Founder’s Formula will help restore the skin’s collagen production. To finish off any good routine, moisturizer is must-have! Starting off with a Youthful Eye Concentrate from Alban Muller Cosmetics to target the eye area and the DNA Intense Recovery Creme from Priori Adaptive Skincare. Another bonus to really take your skincare routine to the next level are facial oils. Skincare products are supposed to be applied from thin consistencies to thicker consistencies, so some oils may be applied before serums while others are applied after. Our favorite facial oils are either the Sabrah Prickly Pear Seed Oil by Sunia K, the Luminous Brightening Elixir from Si Skin, or the Nourishing Facial Oils by Founder’s Formula.

For a day routine: I recommend starting with some ice around the eyes to really depuff the area and give you an awakened appearance. To top off the eye areas, Priori’s Tightening Eye Serum will give you a youthful glow along with Fresh Chemistry’s Glowing Serum. For [an] everyday routine, sun protection is very important to help decrease the appearance of aging and fine lines. The Kakadu Plum Vitamin C serum  from Founder’s Formula will help protect your skin from UV rays throughout the day along with the Vitamin Sunscreen form Olecea Beaute for the ultimate SPF Protection. For those who want a little more coverage, the Tinted Moisturizer by Elevate CBD Cosmetics is light enough to benefit your skin but has enough coverage to smooth over any imperfections.

Best CBD Oil for Sleep

Best CBD Oil for Sleep: Top Brands In 2021

Poor sleep quality affects your personal life and productivity at work. Perhaps an issue is keeping you up at night, or you have a health condition that makes it hard for you to have sound sleep. CBD oil can help, and the CBD market offers a variety of brands to consider buying. It can be a challenge deciding which product to utilize, especially if you have never used CBD before.

However, things become easier when you know the features of the best CBD oil for sleep. Below is a guide on CBD oil and how it can help you have better sleep, including products to keep in mind during purchase.

How to Choose the Right CBD Oil for Sleep

You should spend your hard-earned money on quality CBD sleep oil. Manufacturers make CBD oil differently, and the market has multiple top brands to consider using. Keep in mind the following factors when buying CBD oil for insomnia.

Active Ingredients

The best CBD oil for sleep contains simple ingredients, usually CBD and a carrier oil such as MCT, hemp seed oil, or olive oil. However, some companies provide flavored CBD oil. Ensure that the flavoring is from all-natural sources. Common CBD oil flavors include mint, citrus, and berry. The carrier oil should also be organic to protect your health from the harm of artificial components.

Quality of CBD

The best CBD for sleep is made from grown organically hemp, which is free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Natural farming practices ensure that farmers grow hemp that does not pose health risks to consumers. Colorado is one of the popular locations from where CBD brands get high-grade, organic hemp. Nevertheless, some manufacturers have their own hemp farms.

Note that hemp and its byproducts are legal federally according to the 2018 Farm Bill that became law. The regulation has made it possible for more farmers to grow hemp without getting in trouble with the authorities. Many states have already legalized hemp, so CBD brands have more areas to get quality hemp. They can also grow their own hemp plants.

Strength

CBD hemp oil for sleep comes in various concentrations ranging from 10mg/ml to 60mg/ml and even higher. If you are a beginner, start with the lowest strength a brand provides. However, if you have been using CBD oil for a while, you can try out a stronger potency. Nonetheless, the CBD oil strength you choose also depends on the severity of your symptoms.

Price

Some top CBD brands are costlier than others are. However, quality is what matters. You can get a more affordable CBD oil that is also high-quality. A high price does not necessarily mean a product is of better quality than others, and a lower price does not mean poor quality. The pricing depends on the manufacturer. If you do not have a tight budget, you can buy pricier CBD oil as long as it is high-grade with safe, organic components.

Type of CBD

Companies use three types of CBD in making CBD oil. Full-spectrum CBD provides the effect that enhances the effectiveness of CBD. Experts explain that CBD works more efficiently when used with other hemp components. Full-spectrum CBD contains cannabinoids–mainly CBD–and has minor ones like CBG, CBC, and CBN.

It also incorporates THC, terpenes, flavonoids, and fatty acids. THC is the cannabinoid responsible for making users high, but hemp contains only 0.3% THC, so full-spectrum CBD oil made from hemp will not make you high. On the other hand, broad-spectrum CBD oil doesn’t have any kind of THC, but contains CBD and the minor cannabinoids and also has terpenes.

If the only component you want from hemp is CBD, go for CBD oil that contains CBD isolate. Other hemp elements are removed to remain with CBD only.

Best CBD Oil for Sleep: 2021’s Top Recommendations

With the above factors in mind, you stand a better chance of choosing the right CBD oil for sleep. Every product is made differently, and you should research it before making any purchasing decision. Below are the top CBD oils for sleep to try out in 2021.

Fab CBD

Fab CBD is a common brand name in reviews about the best CBD oil. The company provides a high-quality CBD oil formula made using organic Colorado hemp and MCT oil. It also uses the CO2 method to extract CBD from hemp. The process provides pure CBD that is free of contaminants, and it is the best way to derive CBD from hemp plants.

CBD Type & Strength: With Fab CBD, you get to use full-spectrum CBD oil. The brand provides four strengths to choose from 300mg, 600mg, 1200mg, and 2400mg, and they all come in 30ml bottles.

Melatonin is a substance that tells your body it is time to sleep. The formulation is also very tasty and incorporates MCT oil. These elements are all-natural to protect your health.

CBD Type & Strength: The CBD oil contains broad-spectrum CBD. A bottle carries 1000mg CBD, 60mg of melatonin, 500mg chamomile, and 1000mg ginseng. However, each 1ml servings gives your body 33.3mg of CBD.

Flavors: we only reviewed the sleep version of their oil. (Note: They offer several fruit flavors on other versions)

3rd Party Test: The lab report from Botanacor is easily accessible on the Verma Farms website.

Price: you can get the CBD oil at a premium price tag of $124.99.

Overall Score: 4/5

How to Use the Oil for Sleep?

If you are asking whether CBD help with sleep–yes, it can. However, you need to use CBD oil correctly to ensure you get the benefits it offers for sleep. You should administer a few drops of the best CBD oil under your tongue and wait for 15 seconds or more before swallowing. The oil moves into your bloodstream fast to provide relief for insomnia. Use CBD oil before you go to bed and have the effects kick in to help you fall asleep.

However, if you are on prescription drugs or have a medical condition, speak to your doctor before using CBD sleep products. CBD interacts with some medications, which could affect their performance. Nevertheless, most people tolerate CBD quite well and do not experience any wellness problems when using it.

Dosage Guide for CBD Sleep Oils

As mentioned earlier, CBD beginners should start with the lowest CBD oil concentration. Doing so allows your body to gently familiarize with the product and respond accordingly. Surprising your system with more potent CBD oil is not a good idea. With time, you can shift to a higher CBD oil strength if need be and continue enjoying the benefits it offers.

Nonetheless, if you have been using CBD products for a while, you can try out stronger CBD oil and provide your body with the sleep support it needs.

Other Benefits of CBD Oil

Apart from improving sleep quality, CBD oil has other benefits that enhance full-body wellness. For instance, CBD oil has calming effects that come in handy when you are stressed or anxious. It helps you calm down and focus on what is essential instead of obsessing about a stressful situation. A sense of calm helps you stay composed and boosts the quality of life in general.

CBD also has mood-regulating properties that help with depression symptoms. It can put you in a better mood and help you alleviate the negative thoughts and feelings. Besides, CBD is anti-inflammatory. Inflammation can cause serious health conditions such as cell damage and heart problems. CBD helps your body fight inflammation-related illnesses. It also supports recovery after exercise to enable you to be in good shape and achieve your fitness goals.

Besides, research has shown that CBD has pain-relieving capabilities. The benefit is helpful for many people dealing with various types of pain, including migraines, arthritis, and backache. You can try CBD oil for pain instead of using addictive over-the-counter painkillers.

CBD oil can also lower the severity and frequency of seizures. To provide more proof to that, the FDA in 2018 approved a drug called Epidiolex, which contains CBD to help in treating epilepsy in children. If medications have not been as effective, speak to your doctor about using CBD oil.

Other CBD Products to Try Out

With the legalization of hemp and its byproducts, the CBD market is flooded with a variety of CBD products for buyers to consider using. Aside from CBD oil, manufacturers also offer CBD gummies, topicals, vape pens, capsules, and powders.

If you do not want to swallow CBD oil or want a more convenient way to use it, CBD capsules are ideal for you. They are more discreet, as they look like regular pills. They are great for on-the-go CBD use, and you will not taste any CBD oil. Each capsule contains a specific amount of CBD, so you do not have to measure anything.

CBD gummies are a delicious way to consume CBD. They are available in various mouthwatering flavors, and like capsules, each gummy carry a given amount of CBD. While some brands provide jars of gummies with one flavor, others provide bottles with differently flavored chews.

However, CBD infused gummies are efficient, as they ensure you ingest the full amount of CBD as the manufacturer intended. Gummies coated with CBD might lose some of their potency due to high temperatures and humidity.

The CBD topical category features several products, including creams, salves, and bath bombs. Topicals provide relief to the affected body part instead of targeting your entire body. For that reason, they are efficient for issues such as joint pains and muscle soreness. Besides CBD, topicals usually contain additional components such as essential oils that give them fantastic aromas.

They also incorporate skin-nourishing ingredients such as shea butter and aloe vera extract. Make your baths more relaxing with CBD bath bombs. However, CBD salves tend to have higher CBD amounts than creams, making them suitable for severe symptoms. Since CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, its topical might help with skin conditions such as Acne and Psoriasis.

Top CBD brands also provide CBD vape pens. Vaping provides quick relief as CBD moves almost immediately into your bloodstream. When you draw on the mouthpiece, the vapor moves into your lungs and crosses into your bloodstream quickly to provide wellness benefits such as calming your body.

Despite vaping being the fastest way to get CBD into your system, vaping, in general, has been linked to lung problems. That is why you should be careful. If you have not started vaping, speak to your physician before beginning for your safety.

You can also use CBD in the form of powder. You can consume it as it is or add it to your baking recipes. Besides, you can add CBD powder to food and beverages and enjoy the benefits.

Lastly, How Do You Buy the Oil?

You should buy CBD oil from manufacturer websites. That way, you are confident of getting high-grade products directly from a given brand. Instead of single items, you can also buy bundle packs to save money. If there are any discounts and deals, use them. Nevertheless, if hemp is legal in your area, you can go to a CBD dispensary near you and buy CBD oil. Make sure the store is reliable and licensed. Besides, only spend money on the best CBD oil for sleep.

Identifying high-quality CBD oil from the many available brands does not have to be difficult. First, check the quality of CBD. It should be made from organic hemp, as it is free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Such components are harmful to your health. You should also find out the CBD extraction method a company uses. The best way to make CBD from hemp is using CO2. It is a solvent-free process that enables manufacturers to make clean CBD and safeguard your health.

Apart from in-house tests, an excellent brand takes its CBD oil through third-party testing at a certified laboratory. The lab report should be easily accessible on a brand’s website. While some manufacturers use lot numbers at the bottom of CBD oil bottles, others use QR codes on product labels to enable buyers to access the lab reports.

That is not all. The best CBD oil for sleep contains all-natural components. Check the carrier oil and flavors to ensure they are from organic sources. Artificial ingredients are terrible for your health. Go for CBD oil brands that are open about their manufacturing process, lab testing, and ingredients. The last thing you need is having an allergic reaction because a given brand failed to mention all ingredients.

Choose CBD oil with simple components. CBD and carrier oil are enough, but some manufacturers offer flavored CBD oil as well.

A CBD company should also have informative, well-designed product pages on its website. It should provide all vital details about its CBD oil. A worthwhile brand also has responsive, professional customer support. That way, you get immediate feedback to your queries and any concerns you might have.

Some brands offer free shipping on all USA orders. Others only deliver orders free if they exceed a certain amount of money. The return period also differs depending on the brand. While some offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, others provide a 60 or 90-day return period.

Summary

CBD oil can improve the quality of sleep you get as long as you buy a high-grade product. Ensure the CBD oil you purchase contains safe, organic components and goes through third-party testing. The market offers various CBD oils to use, and we have discussed some of them. You can identify more using the factors we have discussed above.

Nonetheless, CBD oil has other health benefits that include alleviating anxiety, stress, pain, and depression. Such conditions also disrupt sleep and if CBD can help manage them, then CBD users can sleep better. If you have a medical condition, remember to speak to your doctor before you start using CBD oil. The same applies if you are on medication.

The Business Coalition for the Equality Act

Top North Carolina Businesses Register Unprecedented Support for the Equality Act as More than 400 Major U.S. Corporations Join Coalition to Urge Protections for LGBTQ People

The Business Coalition for the Equality Act is believed to be the largest business coalition to ever come together to speak out in support of legal LGBTQ equality

Today, the Business Coalition for the Equality Act announced it has grown to include more than 400 major U.S. corporations (including 13 major North Carolina corporations) calling for the urgent passage of the Equality Act–federal legislation that would modernize our nation’s civil rights laws by including explicit protections for LGBTQ people, as well as improve protections for women, people of color, and people of all faiths. The announcement signals unprecedented support for the Equality Act among America’s business leaders, who join a majority of Americans, hundreds of members of Congress, hundreds of advocacy organizations, and more than 60 business associations–including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers–in endorsing the federal legislation.

North Carolina corporations that have joined the coalition include Cargo Transporters, Inc., ABB Inc., ViiV Healthcare Company, GlaxoSmithKline LLC, Truist Financial, Advance Auto Parts (Advance Holding), Red Hat Inc., Ingersoll-Rand Company, Food Lion, LLC, Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics, Bank of America Corp., Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams and Replacements Ltd. They employ 457,002 people across the state, have 13 headquarters in the state, and generate $151.9 billion in annual revenue for North Carolina.

As a whole, the 416 member companies of HRC’s Business Coalition for the Equality Act represent a major swath of America’s economic engine, with member companies overseeing business operations in all 50 states, company headquarters spanning 33 states and a combined $6.8 trillion in annual revenue. The 416 members of the coalition collectively employ more than 14.6 million people in the United States. The Business Coalition for the Equality Act is believed to be the largest business coalition to ever come together to speak out in support of legal LGBTQ equality. The largest former effort was the business amicus brief for marriage equality, which included 379 businesses.

“We are seeing growing support from business leaders because they understand that the Equality Act is good for their employees, good for their businesses and good for our country. Employers care about their employees’ ability to rent an apartment, send their kids to school, visit the dentist, and pick up the groceries free from discrimination. They realize that when LGBTQ employees and their family members are protected in their daily lives, it makes them more secure and confident in their jobs, and also more productive,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “Thank you to every company that is speaking up and advocating for the passage of the Equality Act. It’s time for the Senate to listen to the business community and the public and pass this long overdue legislation.”

The Equality Act ensures everyone in America, including LGBTQ people, are protected from harassment and discrimination in all areas of life. Currently, even if an LGBTQ person works for a company that provides clear non-discrimination protections and inclusive cultures, that employee and their family members can still experience discrimination in other areas of life and have no legal recourse. In the majority of states–29 states in total–that lack explicit nondiscrimination protections, these employees can be denied healthcare, loans, housing, and basic goods and services because they are LGBTQ.

The business community’s support reflects the broad and overwhelming support for the Equality Act in communities nationwide. New polling from Hart Research Associates found that 70 percent of Americans (including 50 percent of Republicans) support the Equality Act. Hundreds of members of Congress and more than 600 organizations, including the nation’s top leaders in civil rights, education, health care, and faith organizations have also endorsed the legislation.

Corporate endorsements for the Equality Act have more than doubled since the Equality Act passed the U.S. House in 2019.

Business Support for the Equality Act

American Airlines: “American’s mission of taking care of people on life’s journey includes making the case for greater equity and inclusion, two of our company’s core values that are also critical to our success,” said Molly Wilkinson, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and PRIDE EBRG Executive Sponsor. “That’s why we’re proud to join with the Human Rights Campaign and this broad coalition of businesses in support of the Equality Act, a measure that would protect Americans from the kind of discrimination, harassment and unequal treatment that runs counter to our purpose. American has proudly stood with the LGBTQ community for decades and will continue to advocate for full inclusion, equity and protection under the law, because all of our team members and customers deserve to feel welcome and safe.”

Levi Strauss & Co.: “Levi Strauss & Co. is proud to support the Equality Act,” said Anna Walker, Vice President, Public Affairs. “We have a long history of supporting equal rights for the LGBT community, from being the first Fortune 500 company to extend health benefits to unmarried domestic partners more than 20 years ago, to being the only California business in 2007 to file an amicus brief with the California Supreme Court in support of same-sex marriage. The time has come in this country for full equality for the LGBTQ+ community. Ensuring fairness in our workplaces and communities is both good for business and simply the right thing to do.”

Dow: “Dow has been a proud supporter of the Equality Act since it was first introduced; and we continue advocating for the full inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community in the eyes of the law,” said Louis Vega, President, Dow North America and VP Government Affairs & Advocacy, North America. “Ensuring equality and opportunity for all is not only the right thing to do as a matter of human decency, it is good for society and business.”

IBM: “A workforce that reflects the diversity of today’s society drives new ideas and innovation,” said Carla Grant Pickens, Global Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer. “At IBM, we seek to hire the most talented individuals regardless of their gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or other personal characteristics. We also believe that equal protections should extend beyond an employer’s four walls, which is why IBM stands with HRC in endorsing the Equality Act. It’s time that civil rights protections be extended to LGBT+ individuals nationwide on a clear, consistent, and comprehensive basis.”

Marriott International Inc.: “At Marriott, we believe that every individual, including those in the LGBTQ community, should feel welcome, safe and respected when they enter one of our properties. As a global hospitality leader, our principles of non-discrimination extend to all travelers, and include sexual orientation and gender identity. That is why we are proud to join with the Human Rights Campaign and support passage of the Equality Act, to help ensure equality under the law as well as under our own roof.”

ROLLS-ROYCE × Hermès – PHANTOM ORIBE

PHANTOM ORIBE: A BESPOKE ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM IN COLLABORATION WITH HERMÈS

“This magnificent expression of our pinnacle product represents a landmark for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, bringing together two houses with more than three centuries’ combined experience and heritage. It is the result of a deep, genuine collaboration between the Houses of Rolls-Royce and Hermès, in which designers, materials specialists and skilled craftspeople worked side by side to create a truly one-of-a-kind Phantom. It has been an extraordinary privilege to unite on such a creatively challenging, technically demanding commission and bring our client’s remarkable vision so beautifully to life.”

–Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

“This unique Phantom is a fusion of East and West, ancient and modern, serenity and exhilaration. It was a great creative and cultural exchange working with Hermès; we learned a great deal from each other. It is always a pleasure when a client brings us a bold, clear and imaginative vision, and a great thrill to see it realised so perfectly.”

–Michael Bryden, Lead Designer, Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has co-created a magnificent Bespoke Phantom in a unique collaboration with Hermès. Designed and handcrafted by a combined team of Bespoke specialists at the Home of Rolls-Royce at Goodwood, West Sussex, and Hermès in Paris, Phantom Oribe reflects the personality and passions of its owner, Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa. The client envisioned the car as a ‘land jet’, bringing the serene exclusivity of private air travel to the road.

The car’s striking two-tone exterior matches the characteristic green and cream glazes of antique Japanese Oribe ware, of which Maezawa-san is a prominent collector. The upper part is finished in Oribe Green, a fully Bespoke color created exclusively for the client; in an unusual move, Rolls-Royce has made the paint available for use on the client’s private jet the Phantom will be paired with. Developed over many months by specialists in the Surface Finish Centre at Goodwood, it perfectly captures the lustrous, deep-green glaze that characterizes these 16 century ceramics. The effect is beautifully completed by the cream-white lower section.

The Oribe ware-inspired colorway harmoniously continues through the interior, created and realized through a true meeting of minds between Hermès designers and craftspeople in Paris, and the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collective of designers, engineers and craftspeople at Goodwood in West Sussex. Together, they applied their shared expertise and ingenuity to ensure every individual component embodies the finest traditions of both houses.

The interior is finished predominantly in Hermès Enea Green leather, extending to details that include the immediate touch-points of the client; for example, the steering wheel, duchess handles, gear selector and the rotary controls for the motor car’s climate settings.

The Hermès leather flows around the upper instrument panel, interior pillars and parcel shelf. It also enrobes less visible surfaces including the glove compartment and luggage compartment lining, centre console, decanter stowage compartment and Champagne cooler. In a sign of the project’s truly collaborative nature, and the two makers’ mutual esteem, the glove compartment lid is embossed with the signature Habillé par Hermès Paris.

Delicate Hermès piping adorns the headrest cushions and calf supports of the rear seats, while soft Seashell White accents and matching lambswool floor mats create a sense of light and space throughout.

The interior is also replete with examples of Rolls-Royce Bespoke design and handcraftsmanship. Wooden speaker frets, for example, are formed by meticulously perforating the Open Pore Royal Walnut veneer applied to the doors, creating a seamless, textured aesthetic and delicate haptics. Open Pore Royal Walnut is additionally applied to the center and rear consoles and picnic table backs; in another first for Rolls-Royce, the interior features Hermès ‘Toile H’ canvas on the door armrests, center and rear consoles and, most notably, the signature headliner.

Hermès brings its distinctive equestrian heritage and innovative craftsmanship know-how to the car, with the leather upholstery created using stitching and edge-painting techniques originally employed by master saddlers. For Phantom’s Gallery, a feature unique to Rolls-Royce, that runs the length of the motor car’s fascia, Hermès commissioned an artwork based on a design by the celebrated French artist and illustrator Pierre Péron (1905–1988) who created many of the House’s iconic scarves. The work, inspired by the famous Hermès horse motif, is hand-painted on Open Pore Royal Walnut and is presented as though staged in an art gallery, behind glass.

Torsten Müller-Ötvös added, “This majestic and tasteful Rolls-Royce Phantom demonstrates what is possible when talented people from two of the world’s great houses work closely together alongside a far-sighted, inspirational client like Maezawa-san. It is a meeting of minds, expertise, visions and skill that represents the very best of our respective craftspeople and capabilities.”

LATE Clothing LA

LATE Clothing LA, the new one-size-fits-all, casual luxury brand, is soon to debut this Mother’s Day. The collection, created by twelve-year-olds Cate Friedberg and Lalia Susini, was forged through their friendship, passion for fashion, and perseverance through it all together. The two founders have been through starting a clothing line, recovering from injury, and finding a new meaning to best represent their brand, before it even launches. Style connoisseurs are sure to love what LATE Clothing LA has to offer to the modern tween and teen fashionista.

By creating clothing designed for and by teens and tweens, the two best friends and creators of LATE know exactly what their young audience is looking for when buying new pieces. Perfect for any occasion, teens and tweens are sure to feel confident when rocking a LATE piece. The LA-based collection includes several pieces all designed while keeping in mind comfort, versatility, and a luxurious flair. Some of the founder’s inspirations include love, friendship, and the stroke of luck provided by miraculous second chances.

The two founders of LATE, Cate and Lalia, have been lifelong friends since the age of four. They’ve long shared joy in repurposing sample pieces and left over inventory from their parents, and have now taken their passion for fashion to create LATE Clothing LA. The brand’s name comes from part of both founder’s names, Lalia (LA) and Cate (TE). The girls had started out making clothes for their friends, and are now looking to take their business on a larger scale. By adding personal, unique touches to each of their pieces, wearers of LATE are sure to shine with distinctive, stylish flair.

When coronavirus struck, the girls were forced inside due to national stay-at-home orders that stymied the fast-paced LA environment with which they had been involved. Though the pandemic had originally halted the girls’ typically busy schedules, they were able to take advantage of the down time quarantine granted to involve themselves with new creative, DIY projects. Cate and Lalia used the stay at home opportunity to envision ideas of LATE clothing, and their creative inspiration and determination took the reins. That is, until October 22.

On that day, tragically, Lalia was involved in a serious accident that resulted in left side paralysis and brain damage. Her injuries placed her in critical condition for five days at the Cedars Sinia Hospital, before later being transferred to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. (CHLA) After recovering for a week, Lalia received a phone call from her friend and LATE Clothing co-founder, Cate. Despite Lalia’s condition, the two were both eager to begin planning for their brand. Now more than ever, the two founders of LATE looked at the future with more steadfast determination, passion, and excitement than ever before.

Amazingly, though her doctors had predicted a year-long stay in the hospital, Lalia’s recovery occurred much faster than expected. After only 61 days, Lalia was released from CHLA, eager to get back to creating clothing for LATE with Cate. During her stay at CHLA, Lalia’s desire to create kept her going each day and revealed a new meaning for LATE. Not only was Lalia given the opportunity to recover, but she was also granted the opportunity for her love of clothing, life, love, and friendship to flourish with newfound inspiration. The co-founders’ second chance at reinvigorating their clothing line with hope, will power, and gratitude was taken full advantage of in designing the brand’s first collection.

Thanks to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA), in which Lalia spent Lalia spent 44 days in in-patient rehab and continues outpatient therapy at to this day, LATE Clothing LA was granted new life and meaning. Because of this, of every garment that is purchased from LATE Clothing LA’s collection, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles Rehab Department. The price of items in the collection ranges from $30–$100. As a result of the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles’ care and determination regarding Lalia’s recovery, the girls have decided to call their first LATE collection: “Responders.” As the title suggests, the pieces within the collection honor, and are named after, the hospital staff and patients that impacted Lalia’s miraculous recovery. The two girls express gratitude for those who aided in Lalia’s recovery and in turn, the rebirth of LATE Clothing LA.

One of the aforementioned individuals who aided in Lalia’s recovery, and of whom a garment in LATE’S “Responders” collection is named after, is Perez. Perez was the first paramedic on scene for Lalia on the harrowing night of October 22. He is a Los Angeles Fire Department Station 97 paramedic. To this day, Lalia visits Perez at the fire station often and the two have been able to continue their friendly relationship.

Another instrumental person in Lalia’s recovery, of whom a LATE collection piece is named after, is Danielpour. He is the life-saving brain surgeon who phenomenally saved her life. Lalia’s family still ponders with the other medical staff at about how Danielpour so miraculously treated Lalia.

Dr. Parikh is the resident doctor at CHLA and one of Lalia’s biggest supporters during her darkest days. He has a genuine passion for his work, and his determination to help Lalia inspired her to begin to walk again. Even after his shift was over, Dr. Parikh would come visit Lalia. He would challenge her to play Monopoly Deal, if she could manage to stand up. He inspired Lalia to recognize the strength she already had within her, and encouraged her along every step of her recovery journey. Dr. Parikh would kindly skip his lunch to instead eat with and keep Lalia company every day.

Another resident at CHLA, Jack, was Lalia’s personal ball of sunshine. The two would hang out every Sunday, even though patients weren’t technically supposed to mingle. Jack and his dad would wheel around the hospital wing and provide entertainment and laughs for the other patients. Jack’s joy is infectious, and his glee would undoubtedly spread to Lalia when the two were together.

Each piece from “Responders” blends fashion and comfort, making for a collection that includes the best of both worlds. LATE Clothing LA can be shopped online here.
