BEIRUT DESIGN FAIR

BEIRUT DESIGN FAIR responds to the expectations of amateurs, collectors and professionals in search of different and innovative methods, ideas and inspirations in the field of design. “Our objective is to promote recognition of Lebanon’s proper place: at the forefront of creativity in the region. We have here assembled evidence confirming that Beirut has both the legitimacy and the means to become a capital of design.” – Guillaume Taslé d’Héliand, Founder-Director

Over the course of four intense days filled with events and interaction, Beirut Design Fair will gather the best names in Lebanese design – from designers and labels to galleries, distributors, and exceptional artisans – in order to demonstrate the legitimacy of Lebanon’s place at the heart of the international design scene. According to Hala Moubarak, Co-founder & Head of Exhibitor Relations, “The work of Lebanese designers is the fruit of innovative, moving, and elegant ideas; sometimes, research and the desire to preserve ancestral craftsmanship lead to an invaluable creative inspiration.”  Among the fair’s participants will be: Joy Mardini Design Gallery (showing Carla Baz, David & Nicolas, and Charles Kalpakian), Carwan Gallery (Lindsey Adelman, Carlo & Mary-Lynn Massoud, Georges Mohasseb, Paul Matter), Ramy Boutros, Hawini (Wissam Moubarak), YEW Studio (Rami Kik), Hicham Ghandour, and Fadi Sarieddine. The full list of participating galleries will be unveiled in the coming days.

Beirut Design Fair will be marked by events, conferences, roundtable discussions and design courses. The fair’s program will be available on its website at the beginning of September, but we can already mention some highlights: a stop at FabLab, a one-of-a-kind workshop that unites a host of trades and makes them available to Lebanese designers, or a behind-the-scenes visit to Basta, Beirut’s flea market.

BDF-vignette4.jpg

Since its inception, Beirut Design Fair has prioritized quality, creativity, and a cosmopolitan spirit, an emphasis which makes the selection of Studio Adrien Gardère a natural and obvious choice for the direction of the event’s scenography. The collaboration between Beirut Design Fair and Studio Adrien Gardère is intended to generate a spatial language unique to the fair, forged in a spirit of cooperation while keeping in mind the creative singularity of each participant. Inspired by the contrasts in the urban landscape of Beirut, the fair’s scenography will guide visitors along a dynamic and contemporary path.

SPOT ON! will showcase some twenty emerging talents from a new generation of Lebanese designers who will exhibit their creations in a shared pavilion. These include Sayar & Garibeh (presented by the Starch Foundation – Rabih Kayrouz), a selection by ALBA (the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts), Architecture & Mechanism, Anastasia Nysten, and Souraya Haddad – Credoz Rami Matar.

At the heart of the fair, The Banquet will provide a dedicated space in which participants and visitors will be encouraged to exchange ideas, perspectives and discoveries. In the Land of the Cedar, home to one of the world’s oldest cultures, The Banquet, will be situated on a large dining table sculpted from 50,000 year-old wood, around which participants will be invited to gather and taste some of Lebanon’s greatest delicacies, provided by renowned chef Maroun Chedid.

Finally, the salon MAISON & OBJET will organize a networking event at Beirut Design Fair that will bring together the Lebanese design, decoration and lifestyle communities.

For its first edition, Beirut Design Fair has assembled an exceptional selection committee whose members are attached to Beirut and Lebanon either by origin or by affinity: Aline Asmar d’Amman (architect, interior designer and artistic director), India Mahdavi (architect, designer and interior designer), Marc Baroud (designer and director of the design department of the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts), Marianne Brabant (from the Modern and Contemporary Department of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Paris), and Mathias Orhel (founder of m-0 creative recruitment consultancy). During the salon this committee will also participate in the selection and attribution of the Beirut Design Award for creativity and innovation.

Beirut Design Fair will be held at BIEL (the Beirut International Exhibition & Leisure Center) from September 20 to 24, 2017.

The fair will be both simultaneous with and adjacent to BEIRUT ART FAIR, the contemporary art fair which since 2010 has promoted the artistic and cultural vibrancy of Beirut, of Lebanon and of the ME.NA countries (Middle East – North Africa). During these four days, the contemporary art and design fairs will provide a place and an opportunity for the creative energies of Beirut to flourish and thrive.

FEMA Selects Alissa Hsueh for 2017 Youth Preparedness Council

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) welcomes Alissa Hsueh from Irvine, Calif. as one of the 15 national selectees for the 2017–2019 Youth Preparedness Council (YPC).
The FEMA YPC was formed in 2012 to bring together high school-age youth leaders from across the country who are interested and engaged in emergency preparedness. The 15 council members are attending the YPC Summit in Washington, D.C., from July 18-19, to meet with FEMA leaders and prepare for the year ahead.
Born and raised in Japan and Taiwan, Alissa Hsueh’s connection to these island countries and their earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters taught her the importance of preparedness at an early age. She is the founder of Northwood High School’s Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) club and a member of the Red Cross club. Through Teen CERT, she works closely with school leadership to update and replenish emergency backpacks and lockdown kits for all classrooms. In addition, she has a passion for advocacy and has represented her debate team in front of legislators in Sacramento, the California state capital.
“Alissa Hsueh is a very mature student who is serious about her academics,” said Sam Lane, Counselor at Northwood High School. “Alissa is mastering the art of time management so that she can designate more of her energy each year to connecting to her community through methodical emergency preparedness.”
During her time on the council, Hsueh would like to create a Teen CERT or Preparedness Club start-up guide. She believes this would benefit any high school students interested in starting and running their own club and provide students and teacher advisers with lessons learned, action plans for campus activities, and ideas for outreach, events and fundraising. She hopes to gain exposure to local and national organizations where she can learn from the successes and failures of other programs.

THE UNTITLED SPACE: SECRET GARDEN

On Thursday July 20th, join The Untitled Space NY for a Reception and Artist Talk on The Female Gaze on Erotica, Sex Positive Art & Censorship hosted by artist and curator Indira Cesarine along with SECRET GARDEN exhibiting artists Myla DalBesio, Leah Schrager, Julia Fox, Katie Commodore, Annika Connor, Dominique Vitali, Kristin Prim, Katya Zvereva, Taira Rice and Rowan Renee.

Drinks will be served from 6-7pm, with the talk from 7pm – 8:30 and conversation and drinks served afterwards. Space is limited as this is a seated event, please RSVP.

The Untitled Space gallery is pleased to present “SECRET GARDEN” a group exhibition of female identifying artists exploring figurative works of nudes and erotic art. Curated by Indira Cesarine, the exhibit will be on view from June 27 – July 30 and will include works of painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, pottery, sculpture, collage, mixed media and video. The exhibit title is inspired by the book, “My Secret Garden”, published in 1973 by sex positive feminist author Nancy Friday who was instrumental in addressing taboos revolving around female sexuality in the early 70s and an important figure of the feminist sexual liberation movement.

Through historical works of pioneering feminist artists such as Betty Tompkins and Joan Semmel, to that of emerging contemporary female artists such as Andrea Mary Marshall, India Munuez, Myla Dalbesio, Katie Commodore, and Leah Schrager, Alexandra Rubinstein, Andrea Mary Marshall, Annika Connor, Betty Tompkins, Brittany Maldonado, Brittany Markert, Cabell Molina, Danielle Sigler, Dara Vandor, Dominique Vitali, Elisa Garcia de la Huerta, Ellen Jong, Fahren Feingold, Hiba Schahbaz, India Menuez, Indira Cesarine, Jacqueline Secor, Janine Gordon, Jeanette Hayes, Jessica Litchtenstein, Joan Semmel, Julia Fox, Kat Toronto, Katie Commodore, Katya Zvereva, Kelsey Bennett, Kristin O’Connor, Kristin Prim, Lauren Rinaldi, Leah Schrager, Maia Radanovic, Mairi-Luise Tabbakh, Maisie Willoughby, Marne Lucas, Mary Theinert, Meredith Ostrom, Miza Coplin, Myla Dalbesio, Natasha Wright, Rebecca Leveille, Renee Dykeman, Rowan Renee, Signe Pierce, Suzanne Wright, Taira Rice, Tafv Sampson; SECRET GARDEN presents works by taboo shattering artists who fearlessly address sexual themes in their art and celebrate freedom of expression.

Since the inception of the sexual liberation movement women have been faced with polarizing views on sexuality, including pornography and erotica, and it’s place within feminism. Through the highly documented feminist sex wars, which many historians believe attributed to the decline of second wave feminism, came the rise of the sex positive movement, which embraced women’s sexual freedom as central to women’s liberation. While the women’s liberation movement is often been equated with sexual liberation, the fight continues against the double standards that inhibit women from enjoying their sexuality freely and without judgment.

Despite decades of “liberation” contemporary feminist artists today continue to address these themes, to explore the dichotomies of contemporary society and challenge the double standards that linger. The battle with censorship may have shifted from film to the internet, yet artists continue to grapple with to the constraints of conservative positions on depictions of nudity and sexually explicit works. Through their own visual narrative, the artists of SECRET GARDEN explore works that challenge stereotypes, celebrate femininity and reclaim sexual independence. The female perspective on the theme is at once visible through the subtle details as these artists define in their own terms the language of “erotic” through a female lens. They engage a dialogue of sexual self-empowerment that pushes social and political boundaries with artworks that exemplify a new wave of women’s sexual liberation in art.

“I feel it is an important time to present an exhibition of female artists who are resisting oppressive structures and climates by championing sex positive feminism. With the new political right, we have ushered in a conservative era, which attempts to challenge many liberties we have grown accustomed to including women’s reproductive rights and the legality of birth control. The importance of censorship-free, sexually liberated art has regained significance as women today continue to battle for equality and freedom of expression. We were saddened that we were forced to censor many of the artworks featured in the exhibit in our promotions due to regulations of social media platforms and online services such as Mailchimp. We are looking forward to a society that accepts artworks of all kinds, including those depicting nudity as “safe” content for everyone.” – Curator Indira Cesarine
