NORDSTROM NYC FLAGSHIP

Co-President, Pete Nordstrom, along side of corporate partners hosted a tour for retailer’s newly largest single project investment in their history. On Oct 24th, Nordstrom will launch its first flagship in Manhattan since the 1920s. An exclusive onestop shop adjacent to the Nordstrom Men’s store located on West 57th street & Broadway. The seven-level flagship store, designed in collaboration with James Carpenter Design Associates, forms in the base of the ‘tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere.’ With 320,000 square feet, it will embody an experience which is responsive and reflective of its customers. After all, a great design encourages people to stay longer and shop more. And, with 19-foot ceilings, it’s an open canvas for an interchangeable yet flexible floor plan.

The new floor plan allows for discovery, with range to explore and transition through brands freely that they haven’t experienced before. The infrastructure is designed to funnel natural light through transparency with floor to ceiling glass, intertwining the shopping experience to the city’s skyline. The atrium possesses a waveform glass façade which allows for interaction from customers inside and out. Chain-mail veils and lighting installations lend character to the location, reflecting the city’s cultural events as well as major holidays. 

“A rapidly growing younger consumer who’s engaged has emerged,” asserts Pete Nordstrom. Instinctively creating a new culture and how we shop that’s relevant to life experiences. Today one-third of sales are e-commerce, which represents 30% of Nordstrom’s business.

For over 100 years, the retailer has stood the test of time. The climate of brick and mortar for many retailers have shrunk and/or has become nonexistent. Nordstrom understands as their customer evolves, their level of service and retail atmosphere should be elevated as well. Using technology and innovation, the new store’s communication system will allow employees to order beverages and/or garments throughout the location.

In addition, customers will have access to 24/7 buy online & pickup, in-store personal stylists and tailoring while you wait. The Vice President of Creative Projects, Olivia Kim, has fabricated initiatives like Pop-In@ Nordstrom – an exclusive space for emerging designers. Merchandising will include a curated depth of products (clothing, accessories, shoes, beauty, children’s, home etc) across price points.

Lastly, there will be 7 food and beverage options with 4 full-service restaurants, 2 bars and an innovative, gluten-free doughnut stand:

IZICWANGCISO ZEZETHU…NOBUKHO NQABA 12 OCTOBER 2019 I SCHERYN ARENA I 12.30PM – 2PM

Join us for a panel discussion with artist Nobukho Nqaba whose exhibition Izicwangciso Zezethu… (We Make Plans) explores the precariousness of home and historical displacements.

Sitting down with cartoonist and writer, Andre Trantraal, Nqaba will discuss the role of art within displaced communities and the dynamism and complexities of reclaiming urban spaces.

Andre Tantraal’s collaborative work with his brother Nathan Tantraal is rooted in the communities of the Western Cape. Their credentials include a comic book adaption of historian Koni Benson’s PhD thesis on the history of women’s political struggles titled Crossroads.

Nqaba’s work reflects on personal memories of growing up in an informal settlement in Grabouw and the complexities of migration and labour. Her exhibition is on in Zeitz MOCAA’s Project Space until Sunday, 20 October 2019. Booking is essential as space is limited.

SYMPOSIUM

Join Zeitz MOCAA on Sunday 27 October 2019, for What Happens At The Edges, a day-long symposium of discussions and performance related to the landmark exhibition Why Should I Hesitate: Putting Drawings To Work by world-renowned artist William Kentridge. This one-day symposium will present a range of questions and concerns on the role of histories within a post-colonial era and how these have been articulated within the artist’s work.

Participants include leading local and international thought-leaders such as writer Antjie Krog, curators Nkule Mabaso and Carolyn Christov Bakargiev, theorists Premesh Lalu and Achille Mbembe as well as William Kentridge, among others. TWO TOGETHER EXHIBITION 31 OCTOBER 2019 I LEVEL 4

Zeitz MOCAA proudly presents an exciting new installation of its permanent collection as part of a recent reimagining of the museum’s galleries and spatial organisation. The collection will forthwith be on view on the fourth floor and will be re-installed annually.

The new exhibition, Two Together, is built around major themes expounded by artists represented in the collection, and each gallery will contain a pair: either two objects, or multiple works by two artists, or two major themes – either in dialogue, as counterpoints, in contrast, or in sync.

As couples do, in comedic duos or in romance, the exhibition will embrace a rigorous engagement between objects and ideas. On view from 31 October, 2019

JAPAN’S MIYAGI PREFECTURE

The “Land of Contrasts” Is the Gateway to the Lesser-Known Tohoku Region


Dubbed the “Land of Contrasts,” Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture is characterized by its bustling capital city of Sendai, the picturesque islands of Matsushima Bay, the coastal landscape and world-class seafood of Sanriku, the rice fields and vibrant wetlands of northern Miyagi, and the iconic crater lake, “snow monsters” and Fox Village at Mount Zao.


Known as the gateway to the lesser-known northern Japanese region of Tohoku, Miyagi is easily accessible via 90-minute bullet train ride from Tokyo, and by regular direct flights from all major Japanese cities, as well as from Seoul, Shanghai and Taipei. The highlights of this largely undiscovered corner of Japan include:


MATSUSHIMA BAY


A quick day trip from Sendai, the Matsushima Bay area is renowned for its legendary temples, coastal landscapes and islands, and delicious local seafood. At the very heart of the region is the 400-year-old Zuiganji Temple, which was built as the family temple of the founder of Sendai and has been designated a National Treasure. From there, travelers can explore the traditional Japanese gardens at Entsuin Temple, visit sake breweries and sample matcha at a local tea house. And of course, the main draw of Matsushima Bay are the 260 pine tree-topped islands, accessible by foot or boat, that dot the bay. And to top it all off, travelers can taste their way around the Shiogama Fish Market, just a short car ride away from Matsushima Bay (where they can even make their own sushi bowl or grill their own seafood).

SENDAI


The capital of Miyagi Prefecture and the largest city in the entire Tohoku region, Sendai is a major transit hub for the region, accessible by air, ferry, train and bus. The “City of Trees,” as it is known, is thus the starting point for most journeys throughout Miyagi and the Tohoku region at large. Though a busy metropolis, Sendai is known as much for its access to nature and its hiking, camping and skiing as it is for its world-class restaurants, shopping and nightlife. And two of the area’s most historic hot springs (or onsen) are just on the city’s outskirts, at Akiu and Sakunami.


MOUNT ZAO


One of Japan’s most magnificent natural areas, the Zao region of southern Miyagi Prefecture is most famous for its iconic Mount Zao, featuring a colorful crater lake at its summit and, in wintertime, the mysterious “snow monsters” (the strange phenomenon created when freezing cold fronts from Siberia transform the mountain’s massive fir trees into snow- and ice- covered creatures). But beyond the famed deep-powder slopes of the mountain, the Zao area offers a wealth of excursions in other seasons, including immersion in samurai culture at Shiroishi Castle, the unique experience of communing with furry creatures at Fox Village, viewing thousands of cherry trees along the Shiroishi River at Hitome Senbon Zakura in springtime, and hiking and mountain biking through the fiery fall foliage in the autumn months.


SANRIKU COAST


Characterized by dramatic cliffs, hidden coves and abundant marine life, the Sanriku Coast has become a sought-after destination for seafood lovers and adventure travelers. Particular areas of interest include the utterly unique Cat Island Tashirojima and the holy island of Kinkasan, home to the Koganeyama Shrine, where wild deer roam freely and are regarded as messengers of the gods by Shinto priests. The Sanriku Coast is also considered a symbol of recovery, as the area suffered heavy damage in the 2011 tsunami. Each town along the coast has established memorials and museums to commemorate the disaster – one of the most affecting of which is the former Onagawa Police Station, an overturned ruin of a building that was torn from its foundation and dragged onto a nearby boat pier, where it still stands as a memorial.

Today, celebrated actor and singer Anthony Ramos just debuted his brand new single “Mind Over Matter”. The single premiered on Apple Music’s Beats 1 with Ebro Darden and is available at all digital retailers now.

The upbeat “Mind Over Matter” illuminates another facet of Ramos’s slick, soulful, and swaggering signature sound. Backed by a funk-y bass line and driving beat punctuated with flirty female vocals and moans, the track shuffles towards a Prince-style hook as sexy as it is seductive.
 
The song paves the way for his anxiously awaited full-length debut, The Good & The Bad [Republic Records], on October 25, 2019.

Born and raised in Bushwick and of Puerto Rican descent, Anthony Ramos first made his mark originating the dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in the TONY® and GRAMMY® Award-winning Broadway smash Hamilton.  In 2018, Ramos ignited his music career as an independent solo artist on his own terms. Not only did he lend his voice to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Almost Like Praying” benefit single, but he also began architecting a sharp and soulful signature take on contemporary music. He teamed up with producer Will Wells [Logic, Pentatonix] for The Freedom EP, which garnered acclaim from Billboard and many others.
 
Ramos recently wrapped the lead in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s highly-anticipated ‘In the Heights’ movie directed by Jon M. Chu for Warner Bros to be released in June 2020.
 
Most recently, he appeared in the Academy Award-winning film A Star Is Born, directed by Bradley Cooper and starring Lady Gaga where he played ‘Ally’s’ (GaGa) best friend and the critically-acclaimed Netflix series She’s Gotta Have Itcreated by Spike Lee, based on his 1986 film.

This summer, Ramos made his Republic Records debut with the release of “Dear Diary.” A heartening confessional, “Dear Diary” sets the tone and marks the introduction to his forthcoming full-length album “The Good & The Bad.”

Black Line Crazy Launches New Limited Edition Art Bags Line

Mary van de Wiel (aka Van), founder of Black Line Crazy (BLC), has announced the launch of her line of the same name, which includes limited edition bags and one-of-a-kind, hand-woven rugs and wall hangings featuring her paintings. Additionally, van de Wiel’s work was selected for an installation on Avenue of the Americas in New York City by And Partners which acts as ‘co-curators’ on behalf of its clients.

A former chief creative officer of her own award-winning branding agency with offices in New York and Sydney, Australia, van de Wiel has worked with countless Fortune 500 clients. At the same time, she realized she relished walking outside the line with her bold black and white graphic designs born from her love of doodling. One day in the middle of Mexico, van de Wiel picked up a brush and can of black house paint and started painting murals, collages and gallery windows—floor to ceiling. In 2015, she had her first successful exhibition at the Saint Cloche Gallery in Sydney. A year later, she was invited to be part of a group show at Galeria Manuk in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Later moving to Mexico, van de Wiel started to create messenger bags that feature her paintings and signature and expanded her line to currently include totes and zippered sleeves as well as a hand-woven collection of rugs and wall hangings. Anyone purchasing items from her line instantly becomes a collector of a one-of-a-kind or limited edition piece which makes the work truly unique.

Establishing his name in the South African media, they labeled Stephen as ‘the next big thing’ that will come out of South Africa. To all the media Stephen has appeared in all over the world, Cosmopolitan Magazine voted Stephen as one of the 101 hottest men alive of the world in their annual poll. But he really made his mark in the television and film industry by creating, producing and selling his first title – (“The Blueprint”) – to Fox Networks at the age of 23.  A subsequent move to London resulted in the founding of his company Save Your Day Films, as he slowly started to make his mark in the TV and film industry as an exciting Producer to look out for. He Just Wrapped up filming season 2 of his successful series Chasing The Sun that he once again appeared in front of the camera as the host and as the Executive producer alongside Ovation TV and Journy backing his series.

Now days he is based between LA and London. He is currently busy with several other TV series that are in production named Model Kitchen, World Unknown, Here I Come, as well as 2 kids TV series Found Home Farms and an animation series named Jaye the Psychologist Dog. With even more titles he has lined from factual, scripted, kids and even a feature film, the next few years are going to be an exciting time for him and his production company Save Your Day Films.
