THE PROBLEM WITH PRIME DAY

It’s Prime Day–an almost dystopian new holiday of sorts, rivaling Black Friday itself and joining the ranks of those days that celebrate the contemporary culture of excessive consumerism. And perhaps almost as equally as dystopian as the day itself is the subsequent full throttle media push from news publications and influencers alike, listing the best deals and items to keep an eye out for.

And it’s not just Amazon that’s having a sale today. Retail giants Target and Walmart began their sales yesterday and today, too, attempting to both rival and outdo Amazon’s own sales. With this comes a massive ripple effect, with almost every large retailer and store offering their own imitative sales. Though indicative of Amazon’s obvious influence over the market, this ripple effect is similarly indicative of some greater ills of the post-modern capitalist world.

The event itself has been objectively well-crafted and carefully engineered. Beginning in 2015 to celebrate Amazon’s twentieth anniversary, Prime Day was introduced as a member’s only sale. And though the event was never truly a celebration for all as the company makes it out to be, now, the sales are hardly even sales. The bargains that are so celebrated are often merely engineered illusions, with prices being hiked initially, only for the appearance of a greater discount, and many items are often lackluster and unwanted models.

So, what is it about Prime Day and the subsequent market spike that keeps customers coming back? There are almost innumerable reasons behind why days like Prime Day and Black Friday are so successful, and there can be little doubt that there is a host of behavioral psychologists called upon to make Prime Day so successful. In general, Amazon employs numerous tried and true marketing and sales tricks that appeal to customers at a psychological level. From the rush of trying to snatch up a “Lightning Deal” to the fear of missing out on “a once in a lifetime” deal, Amazon certainly pulls out all the stops to generate perceived value around Prime Day’s deals.

This Prime Day, the first as the world begins its exit into a post-pandemic society, is worth considering sitting out. Out of everyone in the world, Amazon is one of the only entities for which the pandemic came with remarkable benefits.  The net worth of Amazon and subsequently Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos skyrocketed over the pandemic. In 2020 alone, Amazon saw a reported 70% increase in earnings in the first nine months of the year. And from March to June, Bezos’ net worth grew $48 billion.

It would be one thing – not a good thing by any means – but it would be something else entirely if Amazon did not have numerous documented issues with their working conditions. And these issues are said to only have grown worse with the pandemic. So as more people turned to Amazon as the pandemic forced everyone to remain at home, and as Bezos’ net worth grew, so too did claims of timed bathroom breaks, unreachable productivity requirements, and general unsafe working conditions.

In addition to these concerns regarding Amazon employees is the fact that Amazon in general has a vast environmental footprint. In 2019 alone, the company was reported to have generated 465 million pounds of plastic packaging waste. In air pillows alone, Amazon’s packaging waste would circle the planet more than 500 times. The fact that events like Prime Day are so successful is remarkable to see as the greater world comes to terms with or, in fact, does not come to terms with global warming and the vast detrimental effects of consumerism culture.

But what is most astonishing about the success of Prime Day is that these great drawbacks to the event, and to Amazon in general, are no secret. People are generally not shy about their criticisms of Amazon and Bezos himself. Tens of thousands of people have recently signed a petition to stop Bezos’ return to Earth following his trip to space next month. Innumerable thought pieces are written weekly indicting Amazon’s practices. And still, it’s one of the biggest companies in the world. Is Amazon now inevitable?

Between multibillion dollar business acquisitions and new real estate expansions, Amazon continues to expand its reach physically and to a wider audience. For a company that began as a bookstore alternative, Amazon now owns wholly unrelated companies to its online offerings such as Ring, Twitch, and Whole Foods.

And while perhaps not unexpected, the sheer variety and scale of Amazon’s holdings raise concerns of a further and more dominant monopoly across the entire marketplace. This is especially concerning in a year when more than 200,000 small businesses across the United States closed due to the coronavirus and ensuing lockdowns.

These concerns, of course, lead to the primary issues with Prime Day. Even if the discounts were truly exceptional, are the glaring issues with Amazon – from irreversible environmental damages to its troubling work conditions – worth its vast selection and free two-day shipping? It is this dilemma that will be a primary issue of the coming years as the cost and convenience of these trademark Amazon offerings are overshadowed by the inevitable environmental impact and implications of Amazon’s burgeoning monopoly.

Moreover, with respect to Prime Day itself, how often do people buy things that they actually need? Oftentimes, as with many sales, people buy items that they would not otherwise, save for the fact that they are on sale. Putting aside Amazon’s own issues with packaging and other waste, this sort of rampant consumerism in itself has led to an increase in pollutant emissions, increased deforestation, as well as an acceleration of global warming.

And while these issues are rather glaring and easy to point out, the solution is not so easily within reach. Ultimately, it will come down to if the convenience of Amazon is outweighed by their ever becoming ethically or morally untenable, whether because of their environmental or social impact. Until then, it seems that Prime Day will continue to succeed, Amazon will simply continue to grow, and so too will the number of complaints and worries. And thus, Amazon has become the company that everybody loves to criticize but few can resist.

All rides start at the Nevada State Railroad Museum and continue downhill to Railroad Pass. Each tour also includes a nostalgic ride back to the top of the hill in one of the museum’s historic trains, along with free museum entry.

Tandem Rail Explorers (up to two riders) or Quad Rail Explorers rail bikes (up to four riders) are available on each tour offered. Tandem rail bike tours start at $85 and Quad rail bike tours start at $150. Dogs do not need a ticket to ride on Rail Explorers. An industry forerunner, Medjet provides travelers hospitalized more than 150 miles from home with premier air medical transport to a hospital of their choice at home. Most travel insurance medical evacuation coverage is only to the “nearest acceptable” hospital. In October of 2020, Medjet was the first program of its kind to announce transport benefits for its members hospitalized with COVID-19 in the contiguous United States, Canada, Mexico and Belize, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and Bermuda at no additional cost to members. That was followed shortly thereafter with the addition of Costa Rica and, just this month, Medjet added all of Central America (including Panama, Guatemala, and Honduras) to the list of countries from which members can be transported, if hospitalized with COVID-19.

Saturday H-D Museum Demo Rides
10 a.m. – 4 p.m. through Sept. 26
Visit the Museum campus Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.and throw a leg over a 2020 motorcycle to experience the fun and freedom of a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Visitors with their motorcycle endorsement will be able to choose from a dozen of the latest and greatest #FreedomMachines from Harley-Davidson, including Touring, Softail® and Sportster® models. A pre-determined scenic route through the Menomonee Valley will give riders the chance to explore the Museum’s surrounding neighborhoods. And if you haven’t had the chance to experience the thrill of the all-new, all-electric LiveWire motorcycle, stop by on Sept. 19 and 26 and throw a leg over the future of Harley-Davidson.

MUST-SEE EXHIBITS
Stevan Dohanos painting, “Tex’s Motorcycle”
Dohanos, a frequent contributor to the “Saturday EveningPost,” enjoyed capturing his subjects as they were in real life. For this piece, Dohanos found his muse on a street in Georgetown, Conn. “Tex” Keller had decorated his saddle bags with nickel spots and covered his saddle with fur, putting his own flair on the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Though Dohanos probably didn’t title the work, many motorcyclists now refer to it as “Tex’s Motorcycle” and prints of it can be found in shops across the country. The original has found a home at the H-D Museum.

“Building a Milwaukee Icon: Harley-Davidson’s Juneau Avenue Factory” (open now)
A recently recovered cache of architectural drawings includes plans for the original Juneau Avenue facility. The pencil drawings, along with archival photographs, demonstrate the whirlwind pace of the company’s early growth. While building an international business—going from producing just over 1,000 motorcycles in 1909 to manufacturing 27,000 motorcycles in 1920—the company’s Milwaukee factory experienced near-constant expansion. Construction through this relatively brief period created the buildings that today, a century later, are still the proud home of Harley-Davidson.

“Building a Milwaukee Icon” provides a snapshot of Harley-Davidson’s formative years and illustrates a chapter of Milwaukee history when the city was known as the “Machine Shop to the World.”

Taming the Road in Style 
Closes Nov. 8
The earliest Harley-Davidson motorcycles had the same suspensions as bicycles of the time: none at all. The roads were a hodgepodge of dirt, stone, and other materials. Bumps were everywhere; suspension was needed. Comfort became a never-ending challenge for Harley-Davidson engineers. It was redefined by each new generation of rider and changing environments: over the decades, roads were paved, engine power and speed increased, and motorcyclists traveled faster over longer distances and craved smoother rides.  In response, Harley improved the seats, redesigned many frames, or added new suspension systems. Sometimes these changes were small, sometimes dramatic. These tweaks and additions added up over the years. The first Harley-Davidson vehicles resembled bicycles. Years later, bicycles and motorcycles looked nothing alike. The pursuit of comfort had transformed motorcycles. Taming the Road in Style examines this history, from the dawn of the bicycle to the launch of the new Harley-Davidson Softail models.

Keep in mind that private sellers will have theirs listed for a cheaper price than the dealer, but there might be more risk involved buying from a private seller.

You can do a check online on car value sites to get an idea of what a fair value is as well. Once you’ve compared prices, you can get a good idea of what you should pay for that vehicle.

  1. Visit Your Bank

If you’ve found a specific vehicle you think you want to go look at, then your next step should be to visit your bank. Credit unions are a great choice for taking out loans. If you don’t bank with one, you can still take out a loan with them by opening a savings account.

When you visit the bank, have information on the vehicle with you. The VIN number is most important. Your bank will be able to tell you what a fair price for the vehicle is. If the vehicle you want isn’t listed for a fair price, the bank won’t give you a draft for what the dealer is asking.

Instead, they’ll give you a draft for a fair price, and you can use this as a negotiation tool.

  1. Run a VIN Number Check

If you decide to take a loan out with the bank, the bank will run its own VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) check. If you don’t, then you’ll want to run a VIN check yourself. You might have to pay a fee to do this, but it’s worth it and can save you from being scammed.

A VIN check will tell you how many owners the vehicle has had, all different states the vehicle has been owned in, any accidents, and maintenance reports. This information is crucial. If the vehicle comes back as a rebuilt title, then this means the vehicle was totaled and you should avoid making the purchase.

  1. Take It for a Test Drive

Always take the vehicle out for a test drive. When taking it out for the test drive, you should be sure to take the vehicle on a road where you can go over 55 mph. This will give you a good idea of how the car reacts to higher speeds.

Some issues might not appear until the vehicle goes over a certain speed. When testing driving, be very attentive. Listen for all sorts of noises.

You can turn the radio and AC on to ensure they both work, but then lower them so they don’t drown out different sounds that could signal problems.

  1. Have Your Mechanic Inspect It

Have a mechanic come out and inspect the vehicle. If you’re buying a used truck, then there are certain things you want to ensure it has and ensure are in working order. These things might be different if you’re buying a car.

Your mechanic will know what to look for and what to check. Cars that come from up North or if you’re buying in a state where it snows, then look out for rust under the vehicle.

If the mechanic says it passes the test, then you’re good to go. If the mechanic finds any issues, then you can discuss these with the dealer and ask about lowering the price or fixing the issues before selling it to you.

  1. Ask the Dealer About Discounts

Don’t hesitate to ask the dealer about discounts as well. Some dealers will give discounts on certain vehicles. There are also deals and specials that dealers give out during certain times of the year.

Be on the lookout for these deals and discounts. You can call the dealer ahead of time and ask if they have any current deals or when their next big sale will be. Those are the best times to shop.

  1. Prepare to Negotiate

At last, it’s time to make the purchase. Prepare to negotiate the price before settling with the price the dealer listed. If you have a draft from your bank, then you can use this to negotiate.

The dealer should be willing to sell you the vehicle for the price the bank offers in the draft. If you’re not good at negotiating, then consider bringing a friend or someone with you who is. Don’t feel bad about it either.

Dealers are expecting buyers to try to bring the price down and in reality, they price the cars higher than fair price for this reason. It’s up to you to get them to come down to a fair price.

TAP Air Portugal: Book With Confidence

TAP Air Portugal is bringing back its “Book With Confidence” program for next two weeks to support travelers from the US who are unsure about making flight bookings for the next few months.
