Renewal Award Winners 

A global pandemic. Racial injustice. Extreme political polarization. In an incredibly challenged moment for the country, extraordinary people in communities across America are working tirelessly to light the way forward. Community-based organizations have become essential lifelines, which is why five nonprofits that represent the brightest lights were chosen as recipients of this year’s Renewal Awards.

The Renewal Awards, presented by The Atlantic and Allstate, is a national competition recognizing organizations that use innovative solutions to create lasting change in their communities. This year’s winners are the 5th class of award recipients and were selected from more than 13,000 nominations. Each winner receives a $40,000 grant to amplify their mission of helping others, along with national recognition that elevates their profile and awareness for their work.

Despite facing significant funding and staffing challenges in this unprecedented year, the winning organizations continue to stay relentlessly focused on the most pervasive and systemic challenges affecting society—homelessness, educational equity, skills and job training, and children and families in need. Each organization serves different needs, but all are united by a core belief that defines our times—no matter who we are, we can lift each other up in times of need.

2020 WINNERS

  • Choose 180 (Burien, WA): Engages youth in critical moments and empowers them to make positive changes in their lives, especially when facing jail time or school expulsion. *Allstate Youth Empowerment Award Winner.
  • College to Congress (Washington, D.C.): Levels the playing field and fosters bipartisanship for congressional interns, providing both financial support and mentorship across the aisle.
  • Facing Homelessness (The BLOCK Project) (Seattle, WA): Integrates 125-square-foot detached accessory dwelling units in residential backyards to reduce homelessness.
  • Hello Neighbor (Pittsburgh, PA): Supports recently resettled refugees with mentorship, educational training, and community events.
  • More Than Words (Waltham, MA): Empowers youth who are in foster care, court-involved, homeless, or out of school by helping to run a bookstore.

Finalists were selected by The Atlantic’s editors and writers. Winners were evaluated by a panel of judges who include former Mayors Rahm Emanuel (Chicago) and Karen Freeman-Wilson (Gary, IN); Anne Marie Burgoyne, managing director of social innovation at Emerson Collective; Kate Nack, director of The Allstate Foundation; former Rep. Carlos Curbelo (Florida); and two past Renewal Award winners, Juedy Mom, director of The Compton Initiative, and Pamela Urquieta, CEO and Executive director of Let’s Innovate Through Education. Allstate selected the Youth Empowerment Award winner.

Started in 2015, The Renewal Awards spotlight grassroots solutions to challenges faced by communities around the country and the people making a positive difference. The awards are the flagship initiative of The Renewal Project, The Atlantic and Allstate’s broader partnership that covers innovation and celebrates change-makers in local communities. With this year’s award, 31 organizations have received more than $800,000 in funding from The Atlantic and Allstate to further their work. Tracking COVID-19 Via Social Media

Apple and Google announced plans to work together to provide tools that will help track the spread of coronavirus using apps that allow digital contact tracing and notification via Bluetooth. Social media reacted with tens of thousands of mentions of the collaboration within the first hour, according to international social media analytics firm Talkwalker.

In just one hour after the announcement, there were 34k mentions of the collaboration, Talkwalker reported. This excitement was best explained by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who stated that he and Apple CEO, Tim Cook are “committed to working together on these efforts.” His tweet received 10k engagements in the first 2 hours of posting and had an 8/10 trending score.

Sentiment analysis shows people reacted positively to the privacy controls that would be built into the apps. Worries about civil liberties were more neutral and there was also a generally positive reaction to what this could mean for the public health as a whole.

Tim Cook’s tweet announcing the collaboration has received 44k engagements. Sundar Pichai’s has received 35k engagements so far.

The companies stressed the privacy controls they would use to exclude sensitive geolocation data. Overall the term “privacy” generated 16k mentions within the conversation.

And Apple and Google weren’t alone among brands doing good.

Among the other companies trending this week are:

NBA H.O.R.S.E tournament by State Farm: Donating $200,000 to COVID-19 relief efforts, State Farm brought back sports, at least a little bit. The tournament generated 20k mentions within a day of being announced, Talkwalker reported.

SNL at home: SNL’s fully at home episode generated 55k mentions. According to Talkwalker, sentiment analysis showed that of those conversations 23% were positive and 24% were negative – right in line with host Tom Hanks’ expectations.

Allstate and American Family are sending refunds to policy holders who are driving less. This is a very small conversation – just 2k mentions in the last 30 days. But the news has generated nearly 500k engagements as lots of people are excited by the possibility, Talkwalker reported. Here’s one sample interaction.

Autoliv, Inc. (NYSE: ALV and SSE: ALIVsdb), the worldwide leader in automotive safety systems, today introduced Safety Score by Autoliv, a smartphone application with the goal to make people of all ages become safer drivers.

Once downloaded and when active, Safety Score monitors real-time driver behaviors and compares it against Autoliv’s proprietary data algorithms and known causes of accidents and provides the user with a personalized 3-digit safe driver score. The higher the score the more safe-driving behaviors the driver exhibited over an array of data points including turning, acceleration, braking, speed and distractions. The app also collects and compares data on weather, type of roads driven on, time of day and trip duration.

Additionally, a personalized Safety Score based on individual driving behavior could also be used to reduce insurance costs.

“Many usage-based insurance programs collect vehicle data and score based on the performance of a vehicle, which often has multiple drivers, so driving behavior reported back to the insurance company isn’t personalized,” he said. “Safety Score assesses individual driving behavior – regardless of the vehicle driven – and provides a personalized score that could be used to determine an individual’s safe-driving behavior. The individual could then share this information with the insurance company to reduce costs.”

What Should I Do after I’ve Been in a Traffic Accident?

Going through a traffic accident is a traumatic experience that can leave a lasting effect on you and your car, which might need serious collision repair after the accident.
