WINTER WHITEOUT

IT’S SNOWING WHITE TRUFFLES IN CARMEL VALLEY

LUCIA RESTAURANT & BAR KICKS OFF THE SEASON WITH A SALUTE TO THE DIAMOND OF ALBA

New Truffle-infused Menu & Cocktails for the Fungi Fanatic

Prized by kings and coveted by chefs, Italy’s famed Alba White Truffle hits its annual stride late fall when the nutty aromatic tuber debuts in auctions and A tables across the globe. Served raw, shaved by a specific slicer, the tuber magnatum pico from the Piedmont region is highly prized with pricing to match, ranging upward from $2,000 per pound. These aromatic subterranean spores, known for their pungent earthy and ethereal aroma, will be showcased in a variety of formats at Lucia Restaurant & Bar November 1 – December 15, 2019.

Chef Cal Stamenov’s month-long salute to the Diamond of Alba is no understatement. “Truffles are extremely fragile with a seven-day shelf life,” says Stamenov, who runs through 10 pounds per season, on average. Gracing Fallow Venison with cured duck liver, gnocchi and roasted persimmon or shaved atop a savory Warm Stuffed Ravioli plumped with soft quail egg and purple artichoke in a brown butter bath, this seasonal stunner is a classic complement to a variety of dishes. The wild underground fungi, harvested by special Lagotto Romagnolo dogs, lives in symbiosis with the roots of oaks, hazels and poplar trees taking on the color and essence defined by each species. “The flavor profile determines how we create each dish, and it changes by the harvest,” he adds.

As the season turns, diners will be offered an express lane into the culinary depths of this ancient wonder, with dishes such as a Classic Carnaroli Risotto with bone marrow, Parmigiano Reggiano and shaved white truffles and Nantucket Bay Scallops, paired with sunchokes and San Danielle Prosciutto, finished with a dusting of white love. Entrees include a Handcut Squid Ink Fettuccine, the ideal foil for truffles, served with Monterey Bay squid menuiere and shaved white Alba truffle. For game lovers, the red wine braised Guinea Hen Breast with braised leg stuffed agnolotti, paired with seasonal root vegetables and shaved truffle is a sure bet. Ensuring no opportunity is overlooked, Stamenov and team are also rolling out a sinful Heirloom Pear & White Truffle dessert as well, paired with caramel pot de crème, Meyer lemon madeleine and white truffle ice cream. Dishes are offered on a revolving monthly menu, market price.

TOAST OF THE COAST
Truffle-infused cocktails are also on tap this November, ensuring guests get their full fungi fix. Kick things off with The Hunt, featuring truffle infused WhistlePig Rye Whiskey, Punt e Mes and Bitter Truth chocolate bitters served in a classic coupe. The Garden Glass steps up with Belvedere vodka, Clear Creek pear liqueur, Meyer lemon, Bernardus honey and fresh shaved Alba truffle. Ideal for Carmel’s crisp fall nights the Nog Blanc combines Armagnac, truffle cream, fresh nutmeg and brown sugar syrup, shaken and served up. $25.

LUCIA RESTAURANT & BAR

Tucked 12 miles inland from the Pacific, the Forbes Four-Star Lucia Restaurant & Bar has long set the standard for dining along the California coast. Named after the majestic Santa Lucia Mountains which provide the dramatic backdrop to the 2,300 sq., ft., alfresco terrace, the contemporary 90-seat dining room is set in rich white Italian leather paired with rustic treatments crafted in marble, oxidized copper, teak and reclaimed wood. French wooden floors, chandeliers and stunning exterior fireplaces grace the mixed-use table layout with a focal point fireplace styled from Bagattini Oregon stone marking the main entrance. Paired with Stamenov’s light touch and artisanal integrity, the restaurant underscores the authentic relationship between food and terroir.

Classically trained with an eye to sustainability, Stamenov’s light touch and artisanal integrity are evident in every offering. Wielding an impressive resume working under the ardent eye of such culinary greats as Pierre Gagnaire, Michel Richard, Alain Ducasse, Eric Ripert and the legendary Masa Kobayashi, his California country cuisine plays off locally-sourced product with the essence of the dish taking center stage. Subtle reductions and thoughtful flavor marriages are his mantra, paired with a back pocket of local farmers and foragers keeping Lucia’s kitchen at a steady simmer.
Culling from the Lodge’s two-acre organic garden and a private two-acre cornucopia flush with 150+ fruit trees, heirloom vegetables, 180,000 Italian honeybees and a cache of Plymouth, Barred Rock, Rhode Island, Speckled Sussex and Ameraucana chickens, Stamenov’s seasonal spotlight menu is certain to please.

Camille Hannah, Olsen Gruin, art, design, 360 MAGAZINE, Australia

Camille Hannah

Olsen Gruin is pleased to present The Sixteen Pleasures, a solo exhibition by Australian artist Camille HannahThe Sixteen Pleasures will be on view at Olsen Gruin from October 9 – November 9, 2019. The exhibition design leads viewers with subtle intensity through a dynamic installation of variously scaled paintings and mirrors. During this journey, reflected glimpses of the self coalesce with Hannah’s paintings, creating spillage between the territories that define body and artwork. Enveloped and embraced within these abstract landscapes, viewers experience a bodily extension: a potent sensation which exceeds rational grasp.

By traversing this alluring amalgamation of imagery, the viewer becomes both witness and participant in the creation of these compelling ‘virtual’ paintings. These seductive, enigmatic images of desire echo the artist’s ongoing explorations around the expansive, unbounded nature of female desire and of the carnal disruption inherent to perceptual experience in the digital realm.

The Sixteen Pleasures also evokes the sensory experience of film, video and the mesmerizing back-lit screens that saturate our modern world. It is richly infused with the artist’s extensive enquiries into art history, philosophy, poetry, sexuality and contemporary culture, filtered through the personal narrative of each individual viewer. With this exhibition Hannah aims to create a boundless, all-encompassing landscape in which the viewer is captivated by an exhilarating and thought-provoking, physiological experience.

Camille Hannah attained a Masters of Fine Art by Research in 2013 and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in 2010, at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, Australia where she was the recipient of an Australian Postgraduate Scholarship Award. In 2018 she won the Wyndham Art Prize, and in 2017 was selected as a finalist for the Arte Laguna Prize, Nappa Arsenale, Venice, Italy and as winner of the Special Exhibition Prize of a solo exhibition at Galerie Isabelle Lesmeister, Regensburg, Germany in 2018. In 2015 she was selected by an international jury to win the T.I.N.A. Art Prize, Maurizio Caldirola Arte Contemporanea, Milan, Italy, and was a finalist & winner of the People’s Choice Award in the Gold Coast Art Prize, Qld, Australia. Hannah was shortlisted in 2014 for Contemporary Visions V, Beers Contemporary Gallery, London, and in 2012 she won the Kozica-O’Callaghan Award for Painting. Other awards include the Premio Ora Art Prize, Italy 2013 International Catalogue and being shortlisted for the Arte Laguna Art Prize, Venice Arsenale, Italy and the Wynne Prize, Art Gallery of NSW, 2012.

Las Vegas Concours d’Elegance, 360 MAGAZINE

Las Vegas Concours d’Elegance

History is a story well told and the inaugural Las Vegas Concours d’Elegance (LVCE) has an incredible line up of vehicles that have stood the test of time. More than 130 vehicles will make their way to the entertainment capital of the world this October, and this collection contains plenty of gems with astounding stories.

Making its way down from the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance in Ontario, Canada comes the Best of Show and People’s Choice, the 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K. The 540K, designed by Johan Oscar Olhager, is only one of three cars known to exist with coachwork by Norrmalm.

Delivered to Max Gumpel of Sweden in 1937, Grumpel modified the vehicle to prepare for the harsh roads and winters of Sweden ahead. The vehicle was built with two batteries and an oversized fuel tank for extended range of travel. Completed in 1938, Gumpel further equipped the car with Marchal headlights, spotlight and running lights. Additionally, his most obvious personalization was the oversized mascot of the goddess Diana with her bow shooting an arrow into the sky. Gumpel was said to be a close personal friend of famous Swedish-American film actress, Greta Garbo, who was nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Actress. It’s rumored that Ms. Garbo was a frequent passenger in the 540K prior to WWII. During the war the vehicle received a special “non-conscription order,” allowing the car to remain with Grumpel and not be confiscated by the Swedish Army.

Another Mercedes-Benz in attendance with an amazing history is the 1928 Erdmann & Rossi Mercedes-Benz SSK. Considered to be the epitome of German Engineering in its era, the Mercedes-Benz SSK won numerous races with the famous race car driver Rudolf Caracciola at the wheel. The SSK model identification stood for Super Sport Kurz chassis and engine displacement in the SSK had been enlarged to 7.1-liter. The model heading to LVCE started out as a 680S Tourer and was ordered new in 1927 by German industrialist Ernst Röchling. Röchling was good friends with Graf (Count) Rudolph von Platen-Hallermund, a German aristocrat and Captain of the German emperor Kaiser Wilhelm’s imperial yacht. The Count purchased the car from Röchling and had it converted to SSK specifications, which included enlarging the displacement from 6.8-liter to 7.1-liter and ultimately also shortening the chassis.

During WWII, the Count served as a fighter pilot and was killed in action. After the war, the Mercedes was confiscated by the allied forces and made its way to the United States where it was discovered in the 1980’s. This breathtaking SSK is well documented with not only the original factory-build sheet but even more important, with all of the original hand-written commission sheets showing the initial order as well as additional requests by the Count. Less than 40 SSK were built and most are no longer in existence.

“No two cars have the same history, so it’s no surprise that car enthusiasts love sharing and swapping stories about their collections,” said Stuart Sobek, founder and chairman of the Las Vegas Concours d’Elegance. “Since we’re recognizing both pre- and post-war vehicles, you’re guaranteed to hear the miraculous journeys that some of these vehicles have taken.”

LVCE will be held Oct. 25 through Oct. 28 and will feature a curated collection of approximately 130 vehicles at DragonRidge Country Club at MacDonald Highlands. In addition to the car show on Saturday, Oct. 26, the four-day event will include an opening night gala at the Keep Memory Alive Event Center on Friday, Oct. 25, a Tour d’Elegance down the Las Vegas Strip on Sunday, Oct. 27 and a Concours-DragonRidge Fun Day of Golf by invitation on Monday, Oct. 28.

APTERA UNVEILS WORLD’S FIRST “NEVER CHARGE” ELECTRIC VEHICLE

Power Required for Most Driving to Come From the Sun, Not the Grid

Aptera Motors, makers of the world’s most efficient passenger vehicles, introduces Never Charge, an integrated solar-charging option that means never having to charge your car again. This is the first solar vehicle-charging system capable of meeting well over the mileage needs of most drivers.

“A no-fuel transportation option is finally possible, the result of Aptera’s efficient vehicle technology and today’s leading solar cells,” said Aptera co-CEO Steve Fambro. “This is a genuinely off-grid solution and something that can power my home. I’ll feel much better about my energy-use footprint with an Aptera in my driveway.”

The Aptera, which can go 1,000 miles on a single charge, is four times more efficient than the average EV. At 100 watthours per mile, it boasts the lowest energy consumption of any electric vehicle on the road. A modest solar complement integrated into the surface of the Aptera’s body can now supply up to 40 miles’ worth of power per day and more than 11,000 miles of total charge per year with no impact on performance.

Never Charge is the first offering to provide truly grid-independent transportation. It will allow drivers to use the excess power they generate to run their homes or feed it back to the grid at night. It also precludes Aptera from having to incorporate a rapid-charging solution into the vehicle or build out a proprietary charging network.

Initially available as part of a special-edition package, Never Charge will ultimately be an option for any Aptera vehicle. Option details and pricing will be announced in coming months, prior to the start of pre-orders.

To find out more about Aptera and Never Charge, visit: www.Aptera.us or watch the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlGKZe4EYj4&feature=youtu.be

About Aptera Motors

Aptera Motors strives to positively impact the planet by building the world’s most efficient transportation. With advanced aerodynamics, lightweight structures and an efficient powertrain, Apterae use less energy by a factor of four than the average electric vehicle. This enables Apterae to travel more than 1,000 miles on a single charge while providing safety, comfort and a fun driving experience.

“An all-rocking, all windmilling, spikily thought-provoking album”
Mojo September 2019

As opening lines go ‘I don’t care, I know you’re going to hate this song, and that’s fair we never really got along’ from The Who’s new single “All This Music Must Fade” is perhaps the most confrontational and catchy of 2019 so far.  “All This Music Must Fade” is available now at all digital retailers. Pre-order the new album, WHO, now.

The song, which debuted on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast show yesterday, opens the WHO album and Pete Townshend describes it as ‘A song is dedicated to every artist who has ever been accused of ripping off someone else’s song. Seriously? Our musical palette is limited enough in the 21st Century without some dork claiming to have invented a common chord scheme’.

The Who has one of the greatest rock legacies in music history, they’re one of the all-time great live bands, have sold over 100 million records worldwide including 9 US & 10 UK top ten albums and 14 UK top ten singles in a career spanning six decades.
Now Fifty-five years after they made their first recordings, The Who is back with their first new album in thirteen years entitled WHO due for release on December 6, 2019.

The eleven-track album was mostly recorded in London and Los Angeles during Spring and Summer 2019 and was co-produced by Pete Townshend & D. Sardy (who has worked with Noel Gallagher, Oasis, LCD Soundsystem, Gorillaz) with vocal production by Dave Eringa (Manic Street Preachers, Roger Daltrey, Wilko Johnson).

Singer Roger Daltrey and guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend are joined on the album by long-time Who drummer Zak Starkey, bassist Pino Palladino along with contributions from Simon Townshend, Benmont Tench, drummers Carla Azar and Joey Waronker, bass player Gus Seyffert and Gordon Giltrap.

The album cover has been created by famed pop artist, Sir Peter Blake who first met the band in 1964 at a taping of the legendary TV show Ready Steady Go. Sir Peter designed and contributed a painting to the sleeve of The Who’s album Face Dances in 1981.

The songs on WHO cover a myriad of subjects including the Grenfell Tower fire, musical theft, spirituality, reincarnation, the power of memory and ‘an old rock star that has lost his marbles’. Singer Roger Daltrey rates it amongst their strongest “I think we’ve made our best album since Quadrophenia in 1973, Pete hasn’t lost it, he’s still a fabulous songwriter, and he’s still got that cutting edge”.

After their triumphant return to Wembley Stadium in the Summer, the band will be embarking on a UK tour featuring a full orchestra in Spring 2020, the dates are listed below.
