Istanbul Bazaars

Istanbul is famous for many of her cultural diversity, but the bazaars could be one of the oldest. Take the Grand Bazaar for instance, constructed back at 1461, this is the oldest and one of the largest covered markets in the world. For centuries, the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul has been the biggest marketplace of the world. Let’s follow the trails of this Istanbul tradition until today.

Grand Bazaar: Constructed in 1461, the Grand Bazaar (Kapalı Çarşı), The Grand Bazaar is a must-see attraction for all İstanbul visitors. A center of authentic jewels, exquisite textiles, finest silk shawls, pottery, famous Turkish carpets, antiques, spices, lanterns, leather goods and all sorts of souvenirs, the area consists labyrinthine streets, passageways and corridors featuring 64 streets, around 5,000 shops and 22 entrances at a total of 45.000 square meters.

Today’s Grand Bazaar is not only a unique shopping destination but also a great historical site that, by walking through its lively streets, you can enjoy an unforgettable day enchanting scents of the spices, impressive handicrafts, Turkish delight and the tempting smell of the Turkish coffee.

Spice Bazaar: The historical Egyptian Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı in Turkish) or simply the Spice Market is probably the second most famous historical bazaar of İstanbul. Built by the early 1660’s, the bazaar gets its name from the revenues collected from Egypt, which was an Ottoman administrative division of the time. Since its beginning the bazaar served as the main market of spices coming from all around Turkey and the world.

Eminönü coastal area, where the Spice Bazaar is located, has been a busy market area since the Byzantine period. Busy trade activity is not surprising in this region, which is one of the central points of the city wall in the historical peninsula of Istanbul for those times when the sea has an important place in trade. As Ptokhoprodromos (a famous Greek poet of the early 12th century) has stated in an article, there is a spice market called Makron Envalos in the same place as the Egyptian Bazaar in the Byzantine period. The Modern Egyptian Bazaar mixed all the goods. It is impossible to say that only spices, sweets, teas and herbs are sold here. Here you will find Turkish ceramics, jewelry, souvenirs, textiles, fish, cheeses and much more.

Çiçek Pasajı: Today it may be known for its beer gardens and restaurants but the Çiçek Pasajı was built in 1876 had 24 shops designed in Parisian style, which was trendy at those times, and 18 luxurious apartments over the shops. The Passage formed by the shops was called “Hristaki Passage” and the building was called “Citè de Pera”. Acemyan’s tobacco shop, which was opened in the early stages of the Passage, Maison Parret and Valloury’s patisserie, Japanese shop, Natural florist, Pandelis’ flower shop, Schumacher’s bakery, Papadopulos’ bindery, Keserciyan’s tailor, Yorgo’s tavern and Sideris’ fur shop were a few of these 24 shops.

In 1908, when the ownership of the building was transferred to the Grand Vizier Sait Pasha, the passage took the name “Sait Pasha Passage”. In the years of the 1940 Armistice, florists began to settle in small shops in the passage. White Russian women, barons and duchesses fleeing the October Revolution were some of those who were selling flowers. When Cite de Pera started to be used as a flower auction area for a while, the florists in Beyoğlu gathered in the passage and the name of the passage was turned into the “Florists (Çiçekçiler) Passage”. After 1940, the beer and pubs took place in the passage; it gradually moved to a new apartment owners and florists to other places and only the name “flower” (çiçek) remained. The first tavern of the passage was opened by Yorgo Efendi. In the following period, the tavern was restored by taking into consideration the basic situation of the Flower Passage with the efforts of the Beautification and Survival Association. After the restoration in 1988, it was reopened as a tavern and in December 2005.

Arasta: Arasta Bazaar was also known as Sipahiler Bazaar at the time. The market with this name became ash as a result of a fire in 1912 because it was amongst the products for the Sipahis. As a result of the archaeological excavations carried out in the region in the 1930s, it was understood that the market was built on the structures dating from the Byzantine period. The market, which was restored by the General Directorate of Foundations in the 1980s, was reopened in line with its purpose.

Today, there are 70 shops in the Arasta Bazaar, although there are not as many shops and products as before. These shops also souvenir, Turkey Iznik tiles and describing the many products sold. What makes Arasta Market so important is not only shops. A museum, where the mosaics removed as a result of the archaeological excavations carried out in the 1930s are exhibited, opens its doors to the visitors in the market. You can see the most beautiful of the mosaic works in this museum, which is called the Great Palace Mosaic Museum or Arasta Market Mosaic Museum.

Sahaflar Çarşısı ( Sahaflar Bazaar / Used Books Bazaar): With a great selection of second-hand and antique books, The Sahaflar Bazaar, is located in the area between the Fesçiler Gate of the Grand Bazaar and the Beyazıt Mosque and is still known as Halicilar street (formerly Sahaflar street) in front of the Inner Bedesten in the Grand Bazaar. Antiquarianism began in Bursa around the time of Orhan Bey in the Ottoman period around great mosques and in the courtyards of these mosques. After a while, the state center moved to Edirne, its present location. Although Sahaflar Bazaar has lost its feature of being a cultural center today, it is often visited by book enthusiasts.

Turkey: Located in the Mediterranean and connecting Asia and Europe continents that are separated by the famous Bosphorus, Turkey is a unique destination that welcomed about 40 million tourists. The country that has always been a hub for cultural interaction and home to varying climates inspires the visitors today with its history, nature, and gastronomy that reflect the diversity of civilizations for centuries. Located at the crossroads of cultures, Turkey has a distinctive understanding of art & fashion which is the synthesis of tradition and modernity and its extremely dynamic shopping & entertainment life also attracts visitors from all over the world.

Becky G illustrated by Mina Tocalini for 360 MAGAZINE.

Becky G – My Man

Today, global superstar Becky G releases new single “My Man” along with the music video via Kemosabe Records/RCA Records. The track, which was produced by Di Genius, was written by Becky alongside Di Genius, Elena Rose, Edgar Barrera, Fresh, Maurice “Verse” Simmonds, Janée “Jin Jin” Bennett and Jenni Rivera.

Inspired by Jenni Rivera’s “La Gran Senora”, the song is a fun and flirty expression of female empowerment as it takes on the narrative of staying with your man through ups and downs, thick and thin. The video, which was shot at home and inspired by spending time nonstop with your partner during quarantine, features Becky alongside her boyfriend, LA Galaxy player Sebastian Lletget. It was directed by Pedro Paulo Araujo of 2 Wolves/SOTA.

Becky G says, “I always loved the perspective Jenni Rivera sang from on “La Gran Señora” and thought that it was so different. It’s a unique perspective that is never really shared in songs, so I thought it would be dope to bring an up-beat 2020 Becky G flow to a concept story like that with my Spanglish style.”

“The music video is a true moment that has now been captured forever. This pandemic will be something Sebastian & I will never forget. Sharing a “fly on the wall” point of view to the silly and competitive side of us from behind closed doors and that people usually don’t get a chance to see, was so much fun. We really didn’t feel like we were shooting a video, we were just being us.”

Singer, songwriter and actress Becky G was born for the spotlight and her multifaceted career is shaping up to be nothing short of iconic. The 23-year-old global superstar’s achievements include two number one hits on the Billboard Latin Airplay Charts (“Mayores” & “Sin Pijama”), a starring role in “Power Rangers,” and guest-starring in Fox TV’s Emmy-winning “Empire” series. She won two 2018 Latin American Music Awards, for Favorite Female Artist and Favorite Urban Song (for “Mayores”) and was awarded YouTube’s Diamond Play Button for surpassing 10 million followers on the platform. Becky G has toured alongside Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, J Balvin, Fifth Harmony and Jason Derulo and has recorded collabs with Pitbull, Daddy Yankee, Maluma, Anitta, Natti Natasha, ZAYN, Bad Bunny and CNCO, among others.

Becky has been honored by the Latin Recording Academy as one of the Leading Ladies in Entertainment (2018) and by her home city of Inglewood, California for her contributions to the Hispanic community; she has been recognized as one of Rolling Stone’s “18 Teens Shaking Up Pop Culture” and one of Billboard’s “21 Under 21”. Becky recently garnered the Extraordinary Evolution Award at the 2019 Latin American Music Awards for her success as a young performer who has reached the pinnacle of success in a short period of time. Her debut album Mala Santa was released in October 2019 and has been certified 8X Platinum in the United States, Platinum in Spain and Gold in México.

A few months ago Becky her track “They Ain’t Ready” along with a special T-shirt. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the T-shirt went to the The Los Angeles Students In Need Charity.

Quinn XCII – A Letter To My Younger Self

Quinn XCII’s third studio album, A Letter To My Younger Self, was released today.

With the release comes a lyric video for one of its tracks, “Am I High Rn” feat. blackbear.

“This song is song about being high for the first time and dealing with the feelings of paranoia, excitement, worry,” says Quinn XCII. “It really encapsulates the ability to just accept what you’re observing and let things be as they are.”

“A Letter To My Younger Self ultimately attests to the joy of living in the moment and learning to trust your instincts at any age or phase of life,” A press release reads, “It unfolds with a nostalgia-soaked but forward-thinking collision of pop, hip-hop, alternative, and soul… The result is a body of work that radiates an undeniable hope even as Quinn XCII dives into painful subject matter, each track elevated by his warm vocal presence, kinetic rhythms, and complex yet addictive melodies.”

“The message I want to get across is to not beat yourself up too much when things in life aren’t going your way,” Quinn XCII adds. “In those moments, some things may seem like the most intense and important thing you’ll ever go through, but try to remember that it’s all just a very small chapter in a much greater life story.”

Drake collaborates with OVO-Nike sneaker

Drake OVO-Nike sneaker collaboration in the works

Drake is said to be launching his collaboration with Nike in 2021. Drake has already worked together with Nike. The brand used Drake’s owl logo for a limited edition of Air Jordan products such as shoes, sweats and special Air Jordan 4, that celebrated the Toronto Raptors becoming champions. There are already mockups on the internet and the rumor is that Drake and Nike might be releasing Air Force 1 and OVO. His other collaborations with Nike include a gold color pair of Jordan 3s that he wore at the 2014 OVO Fest and Jordan 3s that he is wearing in the music video of Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda. Drake has his own clothing brand and also often works together with other designers, such as Roots, Takashi Murakami, Dsquared2. Other footwear brands that he is collaborating with are Clarks and Timberland.

Fans are waiting for private shows

The music industry, like almost all the other industries, took a big blow when the events were canceled all over the world because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drake canceled all of his performances for 2020. Some singers are planning their return to the stage for 2021 and the fans of Drake hope that they will soon have information about his concert plans for 2021 too. “Dark Lane Demo Tapes” Drake’s new album was a huge hit and made it to the top of all charts in Canada and the United States. The fans would love to hear those new songs from the album. The majority of the countries already entered phase one of reopening after the COVID-19 pandemic, so restaurants, bars, and casinos are allowed to accommodate a small number of guests. Reportedly, casinos and clubs will be the first to organize spaces for the singers to perform. Drake might appear on VIP shows in Casinos and perform there for a small number of guests. These types of shows are popular because casinos allow guests to enjoy table games as well as best online casino games. Poker tables, roulettes, slot machines, even sports betting will be at the disposal of the audience. Some parties might even have a very strict dress code. The themes can vary from classic nights to particular movie themes. For instance, during the classic nights, the guests would be asked to wear tuxedos and gowns and for other nights they might be required to wear a Star Wars-themed outfit.

Drake New Album Rumors: DJ Akademiks Shares Major Hints

Drake might have canceled the concerts for 2020 but he did not go on vacation. He is rumored to be releasing his sixth studio album this summer. The gossip about this has been happening for months now. As the summer came, the fans started to wonder when they would get an official announcement about it. This week DJ Akademiks shared that he knows about the plans of Drake on the new album. He did not confirm or deny anything but Drake’s sixth album would be a big deal. DJ Akademiks wrote that his source said that YouTube’s divisions Pandora and SiriusXM are about to finalize a deal for Drake’s sixth studio album. The message said that Drake might be performing songs from his previous albums for thirty minutes and then in a fifteen-minute address share the information about the new album. The plan is for the events to take place from July 2nd to August. Nobody on Drake’s team has confirmed anything yet. The fans hope that with so many concerts delayed, Drake would actually find time to surprise them with his new songs. With so many songs from Dark Lane Demo Tapes and his rumored 6th album, 2021 would be the year of a big return for Drake.

almost monday and Sofi tukker

almost monday × Sofi Tukker

Alt-pop trio almost monday have teamed up with Grammy-nominated Sofi Tukker for the remix of their debut single “broken people.” The track is available everywhere today. Click here to listen.

almost monday (vocalist Dawson Daugherty, guitarist Cole Clisby and bassist Luke Fabry) have already racked up impressive stats with nearly 2 million Spotify streams and over 653k views on YouTube following the release of their latest single “come on come on,” the energetic and genre-defying track “parking lot view” and “broken people,” which was met with praise from multiple indie outlets.

The Kollection called “broken people” an “indie-pop single showcasing Daugherty’s powerful vocal abilities aside groovy guitar licks, disco strings and a rhythmic bass line,” and the UK’s Indie Midlands said, “The Bruno Mars-like pin-sharp funk melds with a cornucopia of sumptuous MGMT-esque synths, “The Indie-rock sensibility remains at its core but it has a layer of good-times and beach-party bristling on top.”

The band tapped Sofi Tukker for the remix to put a throbbing, ‘90s house-inspired jungle pop spin on the track. almost monday’s debut material artfully mines such influences as David Bowie, Gorillaz, Justice, and Prince while revealing the many eclectic elements that inspired them to make music: Cole’s passion for rock (sparked in part by attending countless blink-182 and Foo Fighters shows as a kid), Luke’s longtime love of The Beatles, and Dawson’s childhood exposure to seminal alt-rock bands like U2 and The Smiths.
