Racial Justice Movements

For the last few days, we have been witnessing a popular uprising across this country against racism and anti-Black violence. As the number of victims of police brutality mounts, their names will forever be attached to this moment of national reckoning—Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Tony McDade, David McAtee. Many have come before them. At the Vera List Center, we express our deepest sympathy to their families. We stand in solidarity with Black artists, colleagues, and people who are hurting and protesting.

As curfews across this land curtail the right to speak up against racism and state-sanctioned violence, people pour into the streets. We join them in demanding equity and racial justice. We recognize that as an arts and culture organization, we are implicated in a regime of historical and ongoing systemic oppression of Black and Indigenous people and as well as immigrants and other marginalized groups. And we acknowledge that change must start at the very foundation of an organization—the value statements, principles of governance, organizational structures, staff, and financial resources, long before art can be realized, presented, and discussed.

“If Art Is Politics” is the prompt that has guided our programs and a restructuring of our governance over the last two years. Art as a political practice makes demands on the structures that hold it—as if it were a political party platform accountable to its principles. In October 2020, we will embark on “As for Protocols,” a new two-year research project that considers protocols of both control and empowerment and proposes new terms for engagement that are more mutual and inclusive.

Caught between a global pandemic and martial law, both of which will continue to impact Black lives in disproportionate measures, striving for equitable and inclusive conditions in our art institutions and the field at large is crucial to dismantling systemic racism. In every facet of this work, we are guided by outstanding artists and thinkers who point to better ways of being and coming together. They hold us accountable, every day anew, and we are committed to honoring their work and principles. What is unfolding in the U.S. embodies these basic principles, and we pledge to support them as part of our mission, and in the fight for justice and equity.

Here are links to some of the organizations leading this movement. We encourage you to support their work however you can.

As Zin fans know, California wineries make this variety in a vast spectrum of styles, from fresh and lively to dark and brooding. So, what’s best for grilled pork? Red wine.

The choice is yours; It’s not easy, when you’re racing down a supermarket aisle, to be thoughtful about the wine you buy. Sustainable? Organic? Biodynamic? Do you even have time for that? When you’re tempted to grab-and-go in the wine aisle, remember that your choices matter. A little knowledge can help you quickly select a California wine that is made responsibly.

DELPHI IN SPACE

The sixth book in Bob Blanton’s Delphi in Space series explores how all lifeforms can coexist

On the continued quest for a harmonized society on Earth and beyond, author Bob Blanton brings attention to the civilians most in need of peace, societal advancements, and equality with the sixth installment of his popular Delphi in Space series, Delphi Federation.

The best-selling science fiction series follows two brothers, Marc and Blake McCormack, who unleash new technology that will forever improve our dying environment while making a nice profit to boot. With the arrival of Marc’s daughter Catie, they begin introducing the new technology while fighting off enemies and foreign countries who fear the technology will disrupt their economies. It’s not long before the alien rebels from Paraxea come to claim the technology for themselves, starting a galactic war of the ages that spans the next five books Blanton has planned.

In Delphi Federation, the McCormacks have successfully defeated the Paraxean rebels, but now face an even tougher question: where do they go from here? As they are now responsible for 1.5 million alien lives, they must search for other inventions and advancements in technology that will help them find a good home for the Paraxeans. All while they continue to disperse technology across the globe. Their plans hit a snag when their clinic in Guatemala gets taken over by a cartel boss.

As moving to space, along with other technological and economical advancements, may not be decades away like we once assumed, Blanton explores the benefits of space habitation through the McCormack family’s epic adventures, leaving any space lover itching to pack their bags. With his forceful yet focused writing style, Delphi Federation also puts a spotlight on various underdeveloped countries and habitats outside our atmosphere, encouraging readers to appreciate what we have in the present and pay attention to a future that’s more reality than space fantasy. When the sky is no longer the limit, the possibilities to create a better world are endless.

When asked about his new book and series, here’s what Bob Blanton had to say about pioneering technology, peace, and bringing life to other plants.

Q: What makes Delphi Federation and the Delphi in Space Series different than other science fiction books that take place in space?

Bob Blanton: I focus on fun and adventure while keeping the science as realistic as possible. Generally, I find some scientific basis for my alternate science. These characters have grown throughout the series, but from the beginning I painted them as capable, making the situations as realistic as possible, saying what would be the likely response to a given situation.

Q: The characters in the series live in space, and some scientists and entrepreneurs believe we’re closer than ever to making that a reality. What are your thoughts on having a society in space?

BB: Outer Space is just another piece of real estate. We’re already learning about manufacturing processes that are best suited to space and microgravity through the ISS2. The asteroid belt will undoubtedly be an important source for raw materials that are becoming even more scarce on Earth. Investors are viewing the first forays into space as more adventure, novelty oriented. Eventually we’ll have a manufacturing presence which will require a larger, more permanent presence.

Q: Many science fiction books warn about technological advancements over time, but the series does the opposite. What do you think are some advantages of technology?

BB: Technology is a means to an end. It doesn’t have a political or emotional component, that comes from people who are trying to avoid the disruption it causes in one’s life. It’s difficult to predict what will happen as it becomes integrated into our lives. Just imagine the first portable phones, they were huge, but who would leave the house today without their smartphone. Technology unleashes the human mind to accomplish great and amazing things, unfortunately criminals also have imaginations.

Q: You also highlight different regions in your book that are more vulnerable and may not be able to handle such advancements, such as Ukraine and Guatemala. What is your hope in bringing awareness to these countries and their issues?

BB: It’s easy to look at underdeveloped countries and write their situations off as their own fault. That ignores the enormous damage that a colonial economy did and does to countries that are relegated to sources of raw material and cheap labor. The average people in those countries are doing the best they can with the hand they’ve been dealt. When presented with unbiased opportunities, they can step up and make a much better life for themselves. Unfortunately, the wealthy and powerful in those countries prefer the status quo. Corruption favors them; who would clean their houses if everyone had a high school education.

The paperback and e-book edition of Delphi Federation: Book 6 of Delphi in Space Series are available now.

Israel’s New Purple Standard

In preparation for reopening Israel to both domestic and international tourism, Israel’s Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Health have outlined a new “Purple Standard” for operating hotels in the country. For hotels to remain in compliance with the new standard, they must reach and maintain several benchmarks outlined by Ministry of Health officials that will deem the property safe for travelers.

“It’s extremely important that hotels across our country maintain a high level of health and sanitation standards to ensure travelers’ safety when visiting Israel,” said Asaf Zamir, Israel’s Minister of Tourism. “When we are able to open our borders to international travelers again, we want tourists to feel confident that Israel is taking every precaution to ensure they have a safe, pleasurable vacation in our beautiful and vibrant country.”

Though a date has not been set on when international travel will open again, the Ministry of Tourism is working diligently to implement safety measures across all aspects of travel within Israel, beginning with the “Purple Standard” protocol. These procedures include:

  • Universal rules of conduct for reducing infection, which includes wearing a face mask in all public spaces, maintaining a distance of a minimum of six feet apart, and frequent hand washing.
  • Guidelines for reopening of hotels which include benchmarks for pre-opening preparation, cleaning and disinfecting protocols, guidelines for cleaning the hotel water systems (such as pools), and a dedicated staff member to oversee all health and safety procedures.
  • Outlined guidelines for operations once the hotel is open, which include temperature checks for all staff, guests and visitors, installation of transparent plexiglass partitions at reception desks, clear signage detailing health and safety measures and restrictions to the number of guests in an elevator at one time.
  • Regular maintenance and sanitation of all facilities will be required to the highest health standard.
  • Kitchens and dining rooms at hotels will only be reopened once they have met the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health. All staff will be required to wear face masks and gloves while all seating will be arranged in accordance with social distancing measures. Dining hours will be expanded to allow for proper distancing.
  • Each room will undergo a thorough and deep sanitation process before a new guest is able to check in. Should it be determined that a guest may have been exposed, that room will close for seven days and will undergo a special sanitation process from an outside vendor to ensure it’s safe to re-enter.
  • Guests utilizing spa facilities will be required to fill out a health questionnaire and take a temperature check before any treatment is performed. Therapists and staff will all be required to wear masks and wash hands between each treatment. In addition, treatment rooms will be fully disinfected between each guest.
  • Outdoor meetings and events are allowed for up to 50 people while they stay in accordance with social distancing measures. Indoor events allow only eight people and require face masks.
  • Off-site supplier entry to the hotel will be reduced as much as possible. If suppliers must enter the property, they will undergo temperature checks and will be required to wear a mask.

Hotel brands within Israel have started to announce their reopening strategies, which are outlined below.

  • Isrotel: Isrotel has revealed its new health and safety protocols, which are up to the Ministry of Health’s guidelines and include enhanced sanitation, training of staff in new procedures, reduced gathering and increasing air quality. For a full list of procedures, visit their website here.

Lockdowns Ending

“We’re all in this together” is a commonly heard phrase during this global pandemic, as much of the world practices social distancing. And now researchers at the University of California, Irvine and other institutions have shown that there is some scientific validity to this assertion.

In a study published today in Nature Human Behaviour, Chinese, European, American and British researchers demonstrate that the number of countries implementing COVID-19 lockdown measures – and the duration of those efforts – have a greater influence on the gross domestic products of nations than the severity of the restrictions.

They also found that easing containment edicts gradually leads to smaller economic losses than lifting them swiftly and then having to reintroduce closures.

Another key finding in the study is that smaller, poorer and less economically diverse countries – even those hit not as hard by the public health aspects of the pandemic – will bear a relatively larger brunt from economic damage caused by COVID-19.

“Because the economies of many developing countries are less immune to disruptions in the global supply chain, they are more severely impacted by the effectiveness – or ineffectiveness – of wealthier nations’ coronavirus countermeasures,” said co-author Steve Davis, UCI associate professor of Earth system science. “Countries not directly affected by COVID-19 could experience losses of more than 20 percent of gross domestic product due to declines in consumer demand and supply chain stoppages.”

Examples given in the paper for such economic impacts include Caribbean counties that rely on tourism and central Asian nations that count on energy exports. For instance, if global economies open and are later required to go back on lockdown, New Zealand’s food services sector and Jamaica’s hospitality industry could suffer losses of up to 90 percent. The researchers used a “disaster footprint” economic model to assess potential global supply chain effects of COVID-19 lockdowns, analyzing the impact of restrictions on 140 countries, including countries not directly affected by COVID-19.

They estimated that gradually easing lockdown measures over 12 months would lead to an economic cost at 40 percent of global gross domestic product, while lifting restrictions more quickly, over two months, and then introducing a second round of lockdowns in January next year would increase the cost to 60 percent.

“Pandemic economy management in one country is a public good that benefits other nations,” Davis said. “Our work clearly shows that a gradual approach to easing lockdowns is economically preferable to a swift return to pre-pandemic activities followed by another round of global lockdowns.”

Davis’ collaborator on the project, Dabo Guan of the department of Earth system science at Tsinghua University and the Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management at University College London, said: “Companies will survive the supply chain failures that lockdowns cause by relying on reserves of stock or finding new suppliers. If a second shock hits, reserves may be low and supply chains only recently repaired – making a new break much more costly.”

This project, which was funded by the National Natural Sciences Foundation of China, included researchers from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China; University College London; Shanghai University of Finance and Economics; Shandong University, China; the Chinese Academy of Science; University of Edinburgh; Spark Ventures, London; and the University of Groningen, the Netherlands.

4 Ways To Boost Self Confidence During COVID-19

Fear and uncertainty are the most common reasons why most people feel stressed, anxious, and helpless. With the coronavirus pandemic putting a halt to our lives, the world is facing a severe public health crisis.

With multiple lives lost, rapid changes in our lifestyle, and physical distancing made mandatory, people are feeling frustrated, irritable, restless, overwhelmed, underconfident, and disconnected.

Insecurity has been around for ages, but never more than today. The global pandemic situation has heightened the levels of such feelings. But, we as human beings crave security. We are obsessed with being powerful and taking control of things. So much so that it is becoming increasingly difficult to cope with this uncertainty.

If you are feeling restless and under-confident by the current situation, you must know you are not alone. We are in this together.

And to help you come out of this crisis stronger, in this post, we have listed ways to boost confidence and lower stress.

Accept The Situation AND Tackle The Things You Can Control

Easier said than done, but the first step is to come to terms with the uncertainty going around in the world. While scientists all over the globe are trying to develop a vaccine as fast as possible, we don’t know how long we will have to live with the virus. And we know this sounds scary, but it’s essential to understand we can’t control everything.

Life is unpredictable. Not wanting to sound like a broken record, but that’s how it is. So rather than worrying about the situation you can’t control, focus on the things you can. That will help build confidence and feel relaxed.

If you have lost your job, work upon finding a new one. And again, if you are worried about the virus, inculcate healthy habits in your daily routine and encourage your family to do the same.

Practice Mindfulness

Rather than thinking about how things will unfold in 2021, focus on living in the present. While there may not be much to look forward to, that’s what can help you attain peace.

Question yourself repeatedly and understand why you are feeling what you are feeling. Once you understand the reason behind the negative thoughts in your mind, you can practice mindfulness to transform them into a positive influence.

There are many ways to achieve mindfulness, like yoga, meditation, healthy eating, exercising, therapy, etc. Another foolproof way is seeking the help of a professional psychic.

Psychics can provide guidance on a range of topics from all things love to career and relationships. You can also read Leo daily horoscope on a psychic’s website.

Surround Yourself With People That Love You

Eliminate the people in your life that give you a negative vibe or pull you down. They are just emotional parasites preying on people and sucking the energy out of their systems. You don’t need that.

Rather, identify people who uplift, motivate, and love you. Spend quality time with them. If you are feeling low or anxious about something, talk to them. They can be of great emotional support.

Spending time with friends and family and expressing your worries can provide stability, comfort, and boost confidence.

Physical distancing is a must, but that doesn’t mean social disconnection, Use technology to your advantage, and foster healthy relationships.

Learn To Thrive In The Face Of Adversities

Don’t let fears and worries have the upper hand in your life. Accept the uncertainty that comes with specific situations. And like Rihanna said, “Shine bright like a diamond.”

Here’s what you can do.

  • Identify Your Trigger Points – A pessimistic outlook towards life leads to self-generated uncertainty. And while external factors play a huge role in adding to the same, you must determine what fuels it in the first place.

By recognizing your triggers, you can find ways to deal with them and avoid feeling helpless.
  • Recognize When And Why You Crave For Certainty – Identify situations that make you feel anxious and stressed. Understand how your body physically reacts to them. Do you feel nauseous or nervous?

And when you figure it out, take a moment, breathe deep, and tell yourself that “This too shall pass.” Because in the end, you have to be your own hero.
  • Let Go – Allow yourself to feel vulnerable. Yes, you read that right.

It’s important to experience all kinds of emotions. Acceptance is the first step towards building confidence. When you come to terms with your emotions, let go.

You are not a fortune-teller. You don’t know what the future holds. All you can do right now is to accept how everything rolls.

Final Words

COVID-19 has changed the way we live, eat, and breathe. But we can’t give up. We have to come out to the pandemic stronger and confident.

That’s why, in this post, we discussed ways to boost confidence and reduce stress.

Hopefully, it was helpful.

How to Build Your Brand from Your Bedroom

Under the current, (very) uncertain financial conditions, the prospect of starting a business might not be the most appealing. With some experts predicting an economic downturn worse than anything we’ve seen since the Great Depression during the 1930s, cutting back on all non-essentials and saving as much money as possible seems the obvious & sensible strategy.

However, for every recession, some businesses thrive and several entrepreneurial possibilities will typically develop. To build a recession-proof business and to start a business during the current financial crisis, minimizing overheads is a great place to start.

Work from Home

Many of us have now experience the ‘forced-experiment’ of working from home and have hopefully, made adjustments so that it is a viable option in the future. Whilst during the pandemic your clients may forgive you for having a barking dog or a crying baby in the background, this will most likely be deemed highly unprofessional again in the near future.

By using a telephone answering service from the likes of Moneypenny and a virtual office address from the likes of Apso you can portray your business in a highly professional light. Combined with a professional website, having a ‘bricks and mortar’ office address and a landline telephone number can make a business run from your bedroom, appear to be a highly reputable establishment.

In addition, having a professional receptionist who knows your business down to the important details and provides a great customer service can make your business seem ‘bigger’ than it is.

Another big advantage of using a virtual receptionist app or service is that you can often opt for a 24/7 or out of hours service. This can allow you to capture calls around the clock, meaning that you’ll never miss a sales-lead again.

Use Accountancy Apps

Please note that in some countries, you can get a fine for filling in a tax return and other legal forms incorrectly. If this is the case, it may be wise to invest in a local accountant or hire a tax return specialist from a website such as Upwork.

Whether or not you use an accountant, using an accounting or finance app can still save you lots of time and potentially money. By using an app, for example, you can cut down substantially on admin time that may have previously required an additional member of staff to hire.

The fact that you can access your financial data on your mobile phone, regardless of your location, makes it a lot easier to manage your operations & spending. With the right app; you will also be able to archive receipts and create invoices on the go – giving you fewer things to remember to do when you get back home or back to the office!

Quickbooks and Freshbooks are the leading industry apps at present. To quickly run through what you could expect to do with Quickbooks:

– Create & send highly professional invoices

– Scan receipts & attach them to expenses forms

– Instantly access auto-generated reports such as profit & loss, balance and cash flow

– Run a Payroll

– Accept Online Payments

– Simplify Tax returns

Being able to simplify tax returns is a big benefit. This can save you a lot of money, as a freelance accountant will have to spend less time putting together your forms, meaning that they can charge significantly less.

Develop Brand Ambassadors

By brand ambassadors, we don’t mean the ones that you might find on social media with tens of thousands of followers – we mean utilising your customers & clients. By going above and beyond, providing a great value service and/or product and offering referral promotions, you can often turn existing clients and customers into lead-generating assets. Many businesses make the mistake of chasing new clients and not looking after their current clientele. However, by making your current clients feel special and highly valued, you can often gain many clients passively, by word of mouth.

One way to find brand ambassadors is to do a search online and find people who’ve already shown some authentic love or admiration for your brand. Search using your company name, relevant hashtags or just look for posts that you’ve been tagged in. You can also use software for this if necessary – for example, Brand24 or SocialToaster. Finally, if you have a signup process online, you can ask people if they would be willing to share products with their network and friends. This can also work if you have a newsletter or ask for feedback at any point.

Social Media Advertising

Before you commit to spending any money on advertising, make sure you research for several hours first. People waste millions of dollars each year by putting adverts live without delving into the strategies that work and don’t work for each industry and niche. Hiring an agency can also be very expensive and for something that is not highly technical or difficult to learn. Commit to 2 or 3 hours of research – which pretty much involves watching videos on Youtube at x1.5 speed!

If you do choose to do paid advertising on Facebook, focus on getting the right audience, be as specific as possible and create a tailored set of adverts. Remember that people are not actively searching for products or services, they are just scrolling through their timeline – so you’ll usually need to ‘warm them up’ with a free eBook or offer. If budget allows, test several formats of advert too, make video one of them.

The worst thing you can do with Google, Facebook or any other advertising, is jump in and put campaigns live without learning the tips and tricks that a very important when it comes to making a profit. Done correctly, however, social media advertising can be highly cost-effective.

Here is a great tutorial about Facebook advertising to get started with.

FBI Discredits Antifa’s Involvement

The FBI finds ‘no intel indicating Antifa involvement’ in Sunday’s violence. Trump wants to designate Antifa a terrorist organization despite lack of authority and zero evidence of wrongdoing, reports Nation DC correspondent Ken Klippenstein, based on a leaked internal FBI situation report:

The FBI’s Washington Field Office “has no intelligence indicating Antifa involvement/presence” in the violence that occurred on May 31, according to an internal FBI situation report obtained exclusively by The Nation. That same day, President Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he would designate Antifa a terrorist organization, even though the government has no existing authority to declare a domestic group a terrorist organization. Following the president’s tweet, Attorney General William Barr said in a statement, “The violence instigated and carried out by Antifa and other similar groups in connection with the rioting is domestic terrorism and will be treated accordingly.”

The FBI report, however, states, “based on CHS [Confidential Human Source] canvassing, open source/social media partner engagement, and liaison, FBI WFO has no intelligence indicating Antifa involvement/presence.” The statement followed a list of violent acts like bricks being thrown at police and a backpack containing explosive materials, which were flagged by the FBI under a “Key Updates” section of the report. The FBI has been issuing such reports daily since the weekend, according to an FBI source, who added that none of these documents contained any evidence of Antifa violence.

Antifa, short for “anti-fascist,” is type of militant anti-racist, anti-nationalist organizing that does not rely on the justice system to confront the far right. Groups associated with Antifa have destroyed property and committed violence in the past, but the fact that the FBI’s situation reports cannot find any evidence of it now suggests that fears about the group may be exaggerated.
