Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Hits High Point During Winter

Carbon monoxide is winter’s “silent killer.” Unintentional carbon monoxide deaths kill more than 400 Americans each year and sicken many others. It’s a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas undetectable to the human senses, so people don’t realize that they are being poisoned. Tragically in 2020, California lost a number of residents from carbon monoxide poison related to faulty wall heaters and other sources of carbon monoxide. Watch the video https://youtu.be/3BT_hDb4uqE.

Products that are typically involved in poisonings include malfunctioning fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, ranges, water heaters and room heaters; engine-powered equipment such as portable generators; fireplaces; and charcoal that is burned in homes and other enclosed areas.

Symptoms can be variable, ranging from headache, fatigue, shortness of breath and dizziness to loss of consciousness and chest pain. Carbon monoxide poisoning can happen slowly or swiftly depending on circumstances. In an effort to raise public awareness, California Poison Control offers 10 tips to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning:

1. Have all heating equipment installed properly, and have a home or rental’s heating system inspected by a professional prior to turning the heat on when cold weather begins.

2. Carbon monoxide detectors should be installed in all homes, apartments, mobile homes and workplaces. When a detector goes off, assume that a real danger is present, and get all people and pets out of the structure immediately. Do not re-enter until a heating professional, the gas company or the fire department has declared the area safe.

3. During home renovations, ensure that appliance vents and chimneys are not blocked by tarps or debris. Make sure appliances are in proper working order when renovations are complete.

4. Do not cover the bottom of natural gas or propane ovens with aluminum foil.

5. Never use fuel-burning camping equipment inside a home, garage, vehicle or tent unless it is specifically designed for use in an enclosed space and provides instructions for safe use in such an area.

6. In climates with snow, make sure that chimneys and vents do not become blocked with snowfall.

7. Never operate a portable generator or any other gasoline engine-powered tool either in or near an enclosed space such as a garage, house or other building, or outside of an open window.  Keep the generator as far from the house as possible.

8. Do not use charcoal or hibachi grills indoors to cook with or for heat under any circumstances.

9. Do not attempt to heat your home by turning on the oven or clothes dryer and leaving the door open.

10. Never let a car engine run inside a closed space such as a garage. Drive out promptly after starting the car, and turn the car engine off as soon as you drive into an enclosed space. Never have a garage door closed with a running vehicle inside, even for a few seconds.

Puerto Vallarta Reopens

After new standards helped the State of Jalisco to obtain the WTTC ‘Safe Travels’ stamp, Puerto Vallarta reopens with health and safety protocols in place for locals and visitors

Last week, Puerto Vallarta’s reopening showed the first visitors renowned tourism intact and comforting health and safety protocols to meet the realities of a world of COVID-19.

Since local officials put Puerto Vallarta under quarantine in early March, the city has since undergone a multi-phase reopening process led by local officials following state, federal and international protocols. The process ultimately contributed to the State of Jalisco obtaining the “Safe Travels” stamp from the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) last week.

The measures implemented in Puerto Vallarta began at Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport allowed the airport to receive the WTTC “Safe Travels” stamp. Some of the safety measures include social distancing being practiced by airport workers and thermal video cameras being used as people enter the immigration zone, and disinfectant mats used at all airport entrances and exits.

The health and safety of locals and visitors are of the utmost importance across Puerto Vallarta. In addition to the preventive and precautionary measures at the airport, the city is requiring extensive and continuous sanitization in hotels, public transportation, and public spaces. Restaurants must maintain physical distance between tables and patrons, and establishments must place disinfectant mats at entrances. Local officials are also distributing antibacterial gel and conducting temperature checks.

More than 45 hotels have reopened to visitors, with a maximum 30% occupancy, and are offering modified access to on-site restaurants, pools and beaches. A second group of hotels will open before or during July and the remainder will open in the last trimester of the year for the winter high season.

Connectivity has improved in a notable way since last week. Mexican airlines are offering continuous flights to main domestic destinations, including Mexico City (CDMX), Guadalajara, Tijuana, Aguascalientes, and Monterrey. Internationally, four airlines are connecting U.S. cities with Puerto Vallarta.

Given the dynamic nature of the situation, new measures are expected from Mexico’s federal and state governments, aimed at continuing to advance the reopening of activities in a gradual and safe manner.

With Puerto Vallarta entering Phase 1 of its economic and tourist reactivation and the reopening of its beaches, Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel & Romantic Getaway is ready to open its doors on June 22, adopting new hygiene and safety protocols to ensure safe spaces and experiences for its guests. For more information, please visit www.visitpuertovallarta.com.

A Letter From MGM Resorts

As quarantine policies lift around the country and people begin to leave their homes, travel guidelines must be carefully calculated so jet setters can safely explore. In a letter from Jenn Michaels, Senior Vice President of Public Relations at MGM Resorts International, she explains how the resort experience has changed for a health-conscious stay.

Having recently reopened resorts in Mississippi, Las Vegas, and New York and Excalibur opening later this week, Michaels explains the new normal for the MGM Resorts. Employees and guests wear masks, plexiglass separates players at card game tables, and signs remind guests to keep social distance from one another. The resorts implement new technological innovations to ease worries for guests. One technology applies to their restaurants where guests can now view menus and wine lists on their phones and receive texts when their tables are ready. Another innovation allows guests to use their mobile phones to check into their room and as a room key. Technology like this limits the touch points in one’s MGM Resort stay.

Jenn explains that, despite the readjustments necessary for a safe stay, guests still relax and enjoy their stays, “What else do I see as I wander around? People having a great time, enjoying fun dinners, hanging out poolside, exploring the Bellagio Conservatory (a gorgeous Japanese display), watching the fountains dance, and generally having a blast, like you’re supposed to in Las Vegas. And even better than that is seeing people back at work and how happy they are to be reunited with their colleagues.”

And for those of you who are still weary of travel, Jenn assures guests that MGM Resorts will be happily awaiting your arrival, “When you’re ready to come back, we’re here. There’s no doubt that the world needs travel, adventure, exploration, experiences. And all of us, in some way, play a role in that for consumers – whether it’s the destination itself or telling wonderful stories that inspire people to travel. Let’s continue to be there for each other and for the world.”

Our lives may look different but with innovative technology and careful policies, we can ease back into comfortable and exciting vacations.

Israel’s New Purple Standard

In preparation for reopening Israel to both domestic and international tourism, Israel’s Ministry of Tourism and Ministry of Health have outlined a new “Purple Standard” for operating hotels in the country. For hotels to remain in compliance with the new standard, they must reach and maintain several benchmarks outlined by Ministry of Health officials that will deem the property safe for travelers.

“It’s extremely important that hotels across our country maintain a high level of health and sanitation standards to ensure travelers’ safety when visiting Israel,” said Asaf Zamir, Israel’s Minister of Tourism. “When we are able to open our borders to international travelers again, we want tourists to feel confident that Israel is taking every precaution to ensure they have a safe, pleasurable vacation in our beautiful and vibrant country.”

Though a date has not been set on when international travel will open again, the Ministry of Tourism is working diligently to implement safety measures across all aspects of travel within Israel, beginning with the “Purple Standard” protocol. These procedures include:

  • Universal rules of conduct for reducing infection, which includes wearing a face mask in all public spaces, maintaining a distance of a minimum of six feet apart, and frequent hand washing.
  • Guidelines for reopening of hotels which include benchmarks for pre-opening preparation, cleaning and disinfecting protocols, guidelines for cleaning the hotel water systems (such as pools), and a dedicated staff member to oversee all health and safety procedures.
  • Outlined guidelines for operations once the hotel is open, which include temperature checks for all staff, guests and visitors, installation of transparent plexiglass partitions at reception desks, clear signage detailing health and safety measures and restrictions to the number of guests in an elevator at one time.
  • Regular maintenance and sanitation of all facilities will be required to the highest health standard.
  • Kitchens and dining rooms at hotels will only be reopened once they have met the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health. All staff will be required to wear face masks and gloves while all seating will be arranged in accordance with social distancing measures. Dining hours will be expanded to allow for proper distancing.
  • Each room will undergo a thorough and deep sanitation process before a new guest is able to check in. Should it be determined that a guest may have been exposed, that room will close for seven days and will undergo a special sanitation process from an outside vendor to ensure it’s safe to re-enter.
  • Guests utilizing spa facilities will be required to fill out a health questionnaire and take a temperature check before any treatment is performed. Therapists and staff will all be required to wear masks and wash hands between each treatment. In addition, treatment rooms will be fully disinfected between each guest.
  • Outdoor meetings and events are allowed for up to 50 people while they stay in accordance with social distancing measures. Indoor events allow only eight people and require face masks.
  • Off-site supplier entry to the hotel will be reduced as much as possible. If suppliers must enter the property, they will undergo temperature checks and will be required to wear a mask.
