Brit Awards announces first all-female Critics’ Choice shortlist

Brit Awards announces first all-female Critics’ Choice shortlist including Capitol’s own Mabel and Quality Control Music/Motown/Capitol’s Stefflon Don!

.

Before they were famous, Sam Smith, Florence + The Machine, and Adele were all tipped for success by the Brits’ Critics’ Choice award. This year’s line-up has just been announced and, for the first time, it’s an all-female field. Birmingham-born MC Stefflon Don is joined on the list by soul singers Jorja Smith and Mabel. The winner will be announced on December 4th, ahead of next year’s Brit Awards. Stefflon Don has already tasted chart success this year, reaching the top 10 with Hurtin’ Me, and featuring in Jax Jones’ dance smash Instruction. Mabel, who is Neneh Cherry’s youngest daughter, has also scored a top 10 hit with the slinky single ‘Finders Keepers’. All three artists are previous nominees for the BBC Sound Of… poll, which unveiled its latest longlist on Monday. The Brit nominees were chosen by a panel of music industry experts – including critics, record label employees and the heads of the UK’s biggest radio stations. More than 100 artists were considered, with each voter selecting their own shortlist of five up-and-coming artists.

Before they become ubiquitous, brush up on the 2018 nominees below.

Stephanie “Stefflon Don” Allen was born in Birmingham to Jamaican parents, before moving to Rotterdam and finally, in her teens, settling in east London. You can hear echoes of her upbringing in her confident, inventive songs, which combine dancehall patois, grime verses, and honeyed R&B vocals. Earlier this year, she scored a top 10 hit with Hurtin’ Me.

Age: 25

From: London

Inspired by: Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown, Missy Elliott and Destiny’s Child

For fans of: Nicki Minaj, Wretch 32, Drake

Did you know? Her moniker is a play on Teflon Don – the nickname of mob boss John Gotti – as well as “Steff London”.

She says: “I am so excited to be nominated for this amazing award. A big shout out to all my fans and dons for their support. 2017 has been lit and I can’t wait for 2018! Mad love to you all””

MABEL

Born in the mountains of Malaga, Mabel was raised between Spain, London and Stockholm. Like her parents, Neneh Cherry and Massive Attack producer Cameron McVey, her music is hard to classify, but it’s rooted in the 90s R&B she used to dance to in her bedroom.

Age: 21

From: London

Inspired by: Destiny’s Child, Lauryn Hill, Brandy, Aaliyah

For fans of: Rihanna, Jhene Aiko, SZA

Did you know? Her nickname is Lil’ Bassy because, as a child, she would fall asleep to the sound of speaker-rattling bass in her dad’s recording studio.

She says: “Being nominated for the Critics’ Choice award really is a dream come true for me. So much hard work has gone into getting to this point, so to be acknowledged by something like the BRIT Awards means the world.”

Stefflon Don

I am so excited to be nominated for this amazing award. A big shout out to all my fans and dons for their support. 2017 has been lit and I can’t wait for 2018! Mad love to you all”

Stefflon Don is a charismatic, multilingual, multitalented rapper, singer and songwriter. Speaking English, Dutch and splattering her speech with her parent’s Jamaican patois, Steff has the effortless ability to inhabit many worlds, offering a genuine, authentic global perspective through her music. Whether rap, grime, pop, bashment or bubbling, Steff sounds utterly at home. It’s perhaps why such an impressive array of artists from Charli XCX to Lil Yachty and Wretch 32 have wanted to work with the 25-year-old. One of seven siblings born in Birmingham to Jamaican parents, Steff’s family moved to Holland when she was five-years-old, where was raised in Rotterdam and enjoyed a particularly uninhibited childhood surrounded by Europeans, Turkish and Caribbean people. She had her first studio session at the age of nine and spent her teen years singing and rapping with her brothers and sisters. Steff returned to the UK when she was 14 and made an impression in 2015 with her powerful, patois-inflected version of Wretch 32’s Six Words and her take on the Section Boy’s street smash Lock Arff.

Mabel

Being nominated for the Critics’ Choice award really is a dream come true for me. So much hard work has gone into getting to this point, so to be acknowledged by something like the BRIT Awards means the world.

Born into a musical dynasty, Mabel spent her childhood zig-zagging with her sisters from the mountains of Malaga to Sweden, where she studied at the prestigious Rytmus Musikergymnasiet music school (before starting to write songs in London). A true child of the golden age of 00s R&B, Mabel has since blossomed into one of British pop’s refreshing and positive young role models: moving effortlessly between the worlds of music, fashion, dance and art, with her songs variously exploring female independence, sexuality, growing up and into your own skin. It’s a style Mabel continues to evolve her own way, and at her own pace: recent single ‘Finders Keepers’ has since emerged as one of the breakout hits of the year, having spent five weeks in the UK Top 10 (the third longest stint for a new British artist this year). Mabel is “blazing a trail that’s all her own” (Guardian), and 2018 looks set to confirm her status as a bonafide star who’s just getting started.

MIRANDA LAMBERT’S “TIN MAN” RECEIVES TWO GRAMMY AWARD NOMINATIONS

“TIN MAN” NOMINATED FOR

BEST COUNTRY SOLO PERFORMANCE

AND

BEST COUNTRY SONG

Vanner Records/RCA Records Nashville and prior GRAMMY Award-winner Miranda Lambert receives TWO nominations for her critically lauded, current radio single, “Tin Man,” for the 60th Annual GRAMMY Awards.

The emotionally raw song received nods for BEST COUNTRY SOLO PERFORMANCE, which applauds the vocal performance that Lambert delivers as well as BEST COUNTRY SONG, which highlights the songwriter which Lambert also touts along with co-writers Jack Ingram and Jon Randall.

With how special “Tin Man” is to Lambert it’s no surprise that the artist who is “at the top of her game” [Rolling Stone] penned and performed such a beautiful and raw song that has continued to stand on its own and now today both the artist and songwriter behind “Tin Man” be acknowledged by the GRAMMY Awards.

The double GRAMMY Award-nominated song is one of 24 tracks from the Texas singer-songwriter’s sixth studio, double, album The Weight of These Wings and appears in two of the four categories that comprise the Country music field, adding further endorsement to the declaration that “Lambert is just what country needs.” [New Yorker]

About Miranda Lambert:

Vanner Records/RCA Records Nashville singer/songwriter Miranda Lambert is the reigning ACM Female Vocalist of the Year, having been bestowed this honor for eight consecutive years. Her accolades include 2 Grammy Awards, 12 (CMA) Country Music Associations Awards, and 28 (ACM) Academy of Country Music Awards as well as many other honors, including the prestigious Harmony Award from the Nashville Symphony.

The Texas native released her most recent effort, a double album titled The Weight of These Wings in November 2016, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart. She touts six studio albums to her repertoire; Kerosene (2005), Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2007), Revolution (2009), Four The Record (2011) and Platinum (2014), the latter earning Lambert a GRAMMY Award for Best Country Album, in addition to her previous GRAMMY win for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in 2010 for “The House That Built Me.” The first song released from The Weight Of These Wings, “Vice,” received multiple Grammy and ACM Award nominations. Her third single, “Tin Man”, is currently at Country Radio. www.Mirandalambert.com

“The latest track is more scaled back with just a muted guitar melody and stomping rhythm, but it allows the songwriter to showcase his ability to blend mature themes with a folk-pop twist.” – Billboard

“Noah Kahan has one of the voices, like Angel Olsen, in which it sounds like his heart is singing rather than his mouth.” – Audio Fuzz

“The Vermont singer/songwriter’s voice is otherworldly and his latest is every bit as moving as viral sensation “Young Blood.” – IDOLATOR

As a senior in high school, Noah’s unique take on the world and his knack for crafting a captivating story attracted the attention of world-class songwriters Dan Wilson(Adele), Scott Harris (Shawn Mendes), Chris DeStefano (Carrie Underwood), among others. Word spreads quickly within the songwriting community and it wasn’t long after graduating that Noah decided to defer his college acceptance to pursue a career in music, eventually straying from the 133-acre tree farm he grew up on in the tiny town of Strafford, VT (pop. 1045) to work with Lorde & Khalid’s producer Joel Little. The two recorded six songs together including Noah’s debut single, “Young Blood” which entered Spotify’s US Viral Chart at #5, and quickly cracked over 15 million streams. Noah has since performed sold out shows with Ben Folds, Anderson East, and toured the U.S. with Milky Chance. Noah Kahan will be releasing a new music video for his song, “Hurt Somebody” in the coming months and is currently on a sold-out tour supporting The Strumbellas.

MUSEUM OF SELFIES

THE MUSEUM OF SELFIES OPENS IN LOS ANGELES WINTER 2018

What do cavemen, Vincent Van Gogh, the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna, and Kim Kardashian have in common? All were pioneers of their time in the art of the selfie – a term that has become a part of our regular vernacular and an occurrence that happens on average 2.4 million times a day on social media alone. A new museum opening in Los Angeles this winter will enable guests to explore the genesis of this social phenomenon through the lens of history, art, science, and culture, all while providing the ability to take a variety of visually-stimulating selfies inside the interactive and immersive exhibits: The Museum of Selfies.
Open for a limited time in Los Angeles, The Museum of Selfies is an interactive museum that explores the history and cultural phenomenon of the selfie – an image of oneself taken by oneself – with historical roots dating back 40,000 years to the first depiction of human art. Apologies to  Ms. Paris Hilton about claiming to invent the selfie — The Museum of Selfies begs to differ and can explain why, as well as explain the cultural origins of this manmade phenomenon. The interactive exhibit allows visitors to create art of their own through the lens of history, art, and immersive vignettes. Your inner narcissist – whether you like to admit it or not – will be ecstatic.
The Museum of Selfies will feature various one-of-a-kind exhibits dedicated to the most popular image categories spanning mankind, including: the “high-up selfie,” a vertigo-inducing, rooftop selfie mimicking the top of skyscraper;  the “bathroom selfie,” a two-sided room that lacks self-reflection but excellent for trick photography; the “food selfie,” a super-sized exhibit that satisfies taste buds and foodie fanatics; a “narcissist” exhibit examining the number of deaths from selfie-related accidents while also offering a lesson in Greek mythology; and many other unique selfie opportunities that are reminiscent of today and of centuries ago. The museum will also feature works from modern artists from around the world providing their provocative and creative vision of the selfie phenomenon. Furthermore, a proposed Guinness Book of World Records item that will be unveiled at the grand opening and will remain on display throughout the pop-up experience.
Regardless of one’s perception of the selfie sensation, the museum offers a highly-visual and educational experience with every installation while also encouraging the inner-artist to post and initiate a discussion of the origin of selfies and their meanings.  And while other museums may have banned them, selfie sticks aren’t just allowed inside, they are encouraged.  The Museum of Selfies is located at 211 N. Brand Boulevard in Glendale, CA and will be opening in January 2018. Hours of operation are Wednesday through Friday from 12-8 p.m., and weekends from 12-10 p.m.  Ticket prices are $25 and kids under three are free. For more information and to find out when tickets go on sale, visit www.themuseumofselfies.com.
