Onyx RCR shorty tested in The Bronx by 360 MAGAZINE's Vaughn Lowery (eyewear: Tom Ford , jacket: AllSaints, sneakers: Reebok).

ONYX RCR

*ONYX MOTORBIKES is OUT OF BUSINESS.

While spending a few weeks with the ONYX RCR shorty (w/ dirt kit[1] approximately $6500, including delivery), it is evident that motorbike architect Ryan Montana paid special attention to the needs of this generation of riders.

Traditionally, 360 MAGAZINE defies all things automotive in the Los Angeles playground; however, this handsome one is best suited in a market with flawed transit, inadequate streets and challenging weather. After all, the RCR claws into heavily damaged and soiled asphalt. In fact, a few of its newly introduced appointments have addressed poor battery life and ride noise.

We tested the café racer in The Bronx – one of New York’s bustling boroughs. With approximately 1.7 million residents, many of its inhabitants rely on bicycles, e-bikes, and mopeds as a mode of transportation. However, the main deterrent for operating electric bikes in this area is its hillish terrain. With a massive 72V 41Ah powerplant, the RCR easily tackles steep territory. After a text session with the Onyx Motorbike customer service unit, we were reminded that the company’s forefathers began their journey in San Francisco. And, for those who aren’t familiar with SF’s landscape, The Bronx doesn’t hold a candle to the slopes encountered within that locale.

Design

There are no images that can truly relay how attractive this e-bike is. At first glance, many double take at how skeletal the chassis and body appear. With chrome accents and wood paneling, many comment on how stunning the RCR is. It’s part vintage moped from the 1960s in London and part futuristic dirt bike fueled by lithium. Moreover, the American made muscle e-bike is easily modifiable and can be handled by most electric bike technicians.

Performance

The RCR is one of the most agile e-bikes in the industry. With hydraulic brakes (with strong stopping power) and a fork suspension system, the model can easily handle rocky roads. If like us, you purchase the dirt kit, the knobby tires are perfect for digging into sand, dry, and unpaved surfaces. We’re especially proud of making this choice since we’re constantly confronted by sinkholes in the city. Alternative tires are Shinko. The pro: 5.4 kilowatts motor, 142 ft-lbs torque, 60 mph top speed. The con: the ride at higher speeds can become uncomfortable with bouncy feedback and shaking handlebars.

Battery

The 41Ah delivers power and quickly puts to sleep rider anxiety.  We found our unit to achieve 40 miles while in sport mode. One could easily make a round-trip from Yankee Stadium to West 4th. However, when we witnessed the battery level reach 40%, our model displayed flickered lights and shut down. Having a balanced battery with triggers to safeguard cells, kept us safe from hazards like fires and overcharging. The superfast charger refuels in about 2 to 3 hours and will automatically end the session once it reaches it full capacity.

Technology

The handlebars house a car-like display console that exhibits battery life, odometer, and current speed. The handlebars also have access to USB port, which surprisingly isn’t strong enough to power modern smartphones like Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, equipped with fast 45-watt charging block and capabilities. In our travels, It didn’t seem to charge our Samsung Galaxy earbuds or provide enough juice to power our neon rope light w/ USB from Amazon. The built-in alarm system is robust loud, and if it’s armed while the RCR power button is ‘on’, the position will not allow the tires to roll. Further, having the unit in ‘on’ position makes it easy to hop on and off the unit at a quick store run while providing you with peace of mind.

So far, this black RCR shorty has proven to be a solid competitor in the fields of high-powered ebikes and entry-level electric motorcycles: outstanding performance, superb maneuverability and intuitive design. Kudos to the team at Onyx Motorbikes for engineering, a magnificently enchanting e-bike with unparalleled athleticism and battery life.

Lastly, the Onyx RCR is an excellent alternative for someone seeking to upgrade their Super73 or save big on comparable products like the Swedish Cake.

Queer|Art

Queer|Art, New York City’s home for the creative and professional development of LGBTQ+ artists, is pleased to announce the winner of the fourth annual Illuminations Grant for Black Trans Women Visual Artists, Golden. The Brooklyn-based visual artist will receive a $10,000 cash grant, professional development support, and individual studio visits with members of the judges panel to support their practice.

2023 Illuminations Grant Judge, Jonathan Lyndon Chase writes: “Golden’s visual photography evokes power, vulnerability, beauty, and glowing prowess. There are meditations on self reflection, communal embrace. The documentation on lived experiences in the Queer community and personal self expression are reminiscent of a home feeling.”

2023 Illuminations Grant Judge, Lauren Haynes continues: “Golden’s photographs stood out among this year’s very strong group of visual artists. Each image left me wanting to see more and to engage more deeply with their practice—I am excited to see how Golden’s work continues to evolve.”

Golden’s art practice over the years has been centered around using photography, performance art, and poetry to document, question, and expand the archive of Black trans life in the United States. It is at the intersections of self documentation, family, queer imagination, and Black love where they believe their work is most boundless and referential. Born in the historically Black ecosystem of Hampton, VA, with roots in Pocomoke City, MD, Golden was raised by unrecognized field and factory workers, poets and photographers, local archivists and historians. This influence of the Black American South is felt most clearly in their work’s ability to speak from and towards collective freedom. They write, “the ethos of my art practice is to utilize living archives of self documented photographs of Black trans life within, outside, and surrounding the home, paired with the poetics of Black speech to build, document, and articulate the breath between Black trans living and survival in the United States.”

As the fourth annual winner of the Illuminations Grant for Black Trans Women Visual Artists, Golden was selected from a pool of 51 applicants. The judges, who were chosen by Queer|Art to review applications for the national grant include visual artists, performers, and curators from around the country: Jonathan Lyndon Chase, Lauren Haynes, and Jade Kuriki Olivo (Puppies Puppies). Developed and named in partnership with Mariette Pathy Allen, Aaryn Lang, and Serena Jara, this annual grant draws attention to an existing body of work, sheds light on the under-recognized contributions of Black trans women visual artists, and provides critical support to their continuing work.

About Golden, Winner

Golden (they/them) is a Black gender-nonconforming trans femme photographer, poet, educator, & community organizer raised in Hampton, VA (Kikotan land), currently residing in Brooklyn, NY (Lenapehoking land). They are the author of A Dead Name That Learned How to Live (2022), a Lambda Literary Award Finalist (2023), and the photographic series On Learning How to Live, an Arnold Newman Prize Finalist (2021). Golden is the recipient of an Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Luminaries Fellowship (2019), a Best of the Net Award (2020), a City of Boston Artist-in-Residence (2020-2021), a Mass Cultural Council Fellowship in Photography (2021), a Women Photograph Project Grant (2021), & a Tufts University Art Galleries Creative Futures Fund Grant (2022). They hold a BFA in Photography & Imaging from New York University.

On receiving the 2023 Illuminations Grant, Golden writes: “This award will allow me to complete the installation for my debut solo exhibition, I’m Never Alone, and solidify a live/work space for me close to community in Boston, Massachusetts. At this moment of precipice, rigor, & transformation in my career, I’m glad to be able to center stability, more time for family, and reflection with these funds. Since the start of the pandemic, I feel like I’ve been running towards this break so I really want to honor what more internal time for experimentation & collaborative work can feed back into my self-portraiture practice.”

In addition to Golden, four other visual artists were acknowledged as finalists for this year—Fatima Jamal, Steven Anthony Johnson II, Catching On Thieves, and Jhona Xaviera.

Bobby Vala

Our Head of Global Business Development and avid toy enthusiast, Rodney Ramlochan, continues his ongoing series on the action figure community, highlighting key independent toy lines, manufacturers, retailers, and YouTube podcasters. In a recent interview, Ramlochan sat down with Bobby Vala, the owner and operator of Valaverse, the powerhouse behind Action Force, a line of modern military-inspired action figures.

From Dreamer to Action Figure Maestro

Dreamers abound in the realm of collectibles, but few transform those dreams into tangible action figures. Meet Bobby Vala, the visionary behind Valaverse and the creative genius behind the modern-day Action Force line. In this exclusive interview, Bobby Vala invites us to trace his path from a childhood passion to his triumphant entry into the world of collector-based action figures.

A Dream of Comics: Art Meets Industry

Bobby’s remarkable journey doesn’t begin in a typical toy store but rather with a dream of illustrating comic books. After completing high school, he embarked on the path to becoming a comic book artist, enrolling at the prestigious Joe Kubert Art School. His undeniable passion for comics and art soon collided with the competitive nature of the comic book industry, resulting in a growing collection of rejection letters on his bedroom corkboard. Yet, as often happens in great stories, success arrived when he least expected it. Bobby discovered his break when he stopped actively pursuing it, and fate steered him toward a career in the toy industry that would shape his future.

Balancing Design and Engineering

Bobby’s love for toys was no secret, and a friend’s suggestion to explore toy design marked a turning point. When Bobby decided to return to school to pursue a career in toy making, the curriculum wasn’t solely focused on artistic design. While attending the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), Bobby gained valuable insights into the engineering aspects of toy production. Courses on methods, materials, plastics, tooling, and production became part of his arsenal of knowledge.

However, FIT’s emphasis leaned heavily towards the design aspect, and Bobby, always the well-rounded enthusiast, desired a comprehensive understanding of the toy industry. He recognized that to excel, he needed design skills and engineering expertise. His passion drove him to seek wisdom from industry veterans during internships at Hasbro.

Learning from the Pros

With the assistance of his friend’s brother at Hasbro, Bobby entered the world of toy design during the Transformers movie frenzy of 2007. His time at Hasbro wasn’t just about being a designer; he became a sponge, eagerly soaking up insights from seasoned professionals. To him, the invaluable knowledge these veterans possessed couldn’t be found in textbooks or training modules; it was acquired through years of hands-on experience, and he was determined to tap into it.

He admits to being somewhat of a nuisance, bombarding these experts with questions, but that relentless pursuit of knowledge would prove to be his secret weapon in the competitive toy industry. Armed with insights from the old guard, Bobby left no stone unturned in his quest to understand the industry’s inner workings. His artistic talent and passion for action figures quickly caught Hasbro’s attention.

GI Joe Dreams

His journey at Hasbro was remarkable, with stints on iconic brands like Marvel, Star Wars, and Transformers. While Bobby’s commitment to Hasbro’s flagship toy lines was evident, his heart remained devoted to one toy line in particular – GI Joe. He was even entrusted with creating the first-ever six-inch GI Joe action figure line, a dream come true. However, a GI Joe movie cancellation led to the project’s discontinuation, a setback that couldn’t diminish Bobby’s passion for the brand.

Going Independent

In 2018, a massive layoff at Hasbro reshaped Bobby’s path once again. Undeterred, he decided to pursue his toy passion independently. A friend’s suggestion to create his own toy line ignited a new dream – to resurrect Action Force, a classic toy brand lost in obscurity. Action Force, once a rival to GI Joe, had faded into the shadows when Hasbro acquired its parent company, Palitoy. In 2005, Hasbro stopped renewing the Action Force trademark, leaving it dormant for years. Bobby saw an opportunity to breathe new life into this iconic brand. For Bobby, GI Joe is not just a competitor; it’s a lifelong love affair. He maintains a 300-square-foot room in his house dedicated to GI Joe, filled with every figure, prototype, and unreleased gem. His deep appreciation for GI Joe led him to purchase the trademark for Steel Brigade, ensuring its legacy lives on.

Resurrecting Action Force

In 2019, Bobby launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the revival of Action Force. The campaign exceeded its initial goals, unlocking a plethora of action figures and accessories. Unexpected delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic tested Bobby’s resolve, but his dedication to the project never wavered. However, Action Force was more than just action figures for Bobby; it was about building an immersive brand. Comics, merchandise, and events were all part of his vision. His commitment to engaging with the community, signing legendary figures like Sergeant Slaughter, and ensuring Action Force remained relevant spoke to his passion and determination.

Beyond Action Figures

Bobby’s diverse expertise has allowed him to wear many hats as an independent toy entrepreneur. At Valaverse, he’s not just the creative mind behind the products; he’s also the head of marketing, social media, engineering, and production. This multifaceted approach sets him apart from those who focus solely on design. His journey from being a Hasbro designer to running his enterprise might seem like a leap, but it’s a testament to his resilience and adaptability. Bobby has embraced the challenges of entrepreneurship with open arms, and his results speak for themselves.

The Multifaceted Entrepreneur

Bobby’s entrepreneurial journey hasn’t been without its fair share of hurdles. Toy entrepreneurship is a multifaceted endeavor beyond just designing action figures. Issues like supply chain challenges, production delays, and the intricacies of marketing and shipping can’t be underestimated. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the nitty-gritty details, from ocean freight costs to tooling changes and cost sheets. For Bobby, it’s about being prepared and knowledgeable, traits that can only be honed through real-world experience.

Navigating Entrepreneurial Challenges

Bobby Vala is vocal about his concerns regarding newcomers entering the toy industry without the necessary education and experience. He believes a genuine commitment to the industry should include a deep understanding of its intricacies. Starting a toy line isn’t just about hiring a sculptor and crowdfunding; it requires a comprehensive grasp of all aspects, from manufacturing to marketing.

Advocating Responsible Entrepreneurship

His unwavering passion for action figures and collectibles drives him to advocate for responsible entrepreneurship within the industry. Bobby emphasizes that being “all in” makes all the difference in toy entrepreneurship. Those who are genuinely committed and passionate about their creations, like Valaverse, stand out. It’s more than just putting out many items; it’s about pushing them, creating a vibrant and thriving brand, and connecting with the community.

Affordability Matters

For collectors, nothing is more frustrating than feeling squeezed dry by rising action figure prices. Bobby Vala, himself a collector, understands this all too well. He firmly believes that the industry shouldn’t exploit its consumers. As he aptly puts it, you can squeeze a sponge as hard as you want, but eventually, it’ll run dry. So why squeeze the consumer? When he launched the Action Force line through Kickstarter, some critics deemed the $32 price tag too high. However, Bobby has remained true to his commitment to affordability. Even years later, his prices haven’t budged. In contrast, major players like Hasbro continue to increase their prices, with rumors suggesting even steeper increases on the horizon.

Setting a New Precedent

One of the most remarkable moves by Valaverse has been the recent announcement of price reductions. Bobby isn’t doing this because his company is struggling; it’s quite the opposite. His increasing quantities have led to cost reductions, and rather than pocketing the extra money, he’s choosing to give back to the fans. Valaverse is setting a unique precedent in the industry by being the only company to drop prices, prioritizing the consumer experience above all else. Bobby’s goal is to offer a wide array of products, from gear packs to weapon packs, basic Troopers to regular figures, all at prices that make collectors feel like they’re getting real value for their investment.

The Complete Package

Bobby’s commitment to value becomes evident when comparing Action Force to other major brands. He points out that even other brand’s popular deluxe figures, priced at $34.99, come up short when compared to Action Force offerings. Valaverse figures come with stands, extra hands, and a variety of accessories that rival or surpass the competition, all for a $30 price point. He emphasizes that the key is providing consumers with a complete package that makes their investment worthwhile. While other brands may release deluxe figures with fewer accessories at higher prices, Bobby seeks to provide an all-encompassing experience for Action Force fans.

Quality Control and Transparency

Bobby understands that maintaining product quality is crucial in building trust with collectors. He acknowledges that Action Force hasn’t been without its hiccups, with production issues in Series One and a mold defect in a Series Two figure. However, he highlights the importance of addressing these issues promptly and transparently. For Bobby, holding the factory accountable is a non-negotiable principle. It involves rigorous sample inspections, communication with the factory, and meticulous attention to detail. He believes a robust quality control system and an efficient feedback loop are essential to delivering top-notch products.

Gratitude to Collectors

Bobby Vala deeply appreciates Action Force fans for their steadfast support. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a newcomer, Valaverse remains committed to a collector-centric approach. Action Force isn’t merely a toy line; it’s an immersive experience, and Valaverse is devoted to ensuring that every collector feels valued and satisfied.

Collectors First

In closing, Bobby Vala leaves us with a clear message: Action Force is the line where collectors come first. It’s a journey that continues to unfold, innovate, and captivate, one meticulously crafted figure at a time. Whether you’re a seasoned action figure aficionado or just embarking on your collecting odyssey, Valaverse promises a thrilling adventure for all.

Journey Montana – Jack

Today, Harlem’s R&B Pop princess Journey Montana releases her new single, “Jack.” Get it HERE (confidential) via 10K Projects.

“‘Hit The Road Jack’ by Ray Charles has been one of my favorite songs for most of my life, so I really wanted to put my own twist on it,” says Journey. “On my version, ‘Jack’ represents hitting a breaking point and what happens when you realize enough is enough and it’s time to let that man go. This is a song about a woman choosing and trusting herself.”

The new track follows recent singles “Vendetta,” “Ain’t Mine” feat. Lay Bankz and “212,” a R&B love letter to the iconic New York area code Journey calls home featuring her hypnotic, confident croon. Coupled with a stunning On The Radar freestyle and a From The Block performance of “Vendetta,” as well as a support slot alongside R&B singer Ann Marie’s summer tour, Journey has cemented herself as one to watch this year.

“Jack” continues her hard-hitting run, after last year’s breakout single “Bad Decisions,” which boasts over 1.3M Spotify streams after going viral on TikTok. BIA – REALLY HER

BIA, the Boston-area global star, releases the international deluxe edition of her latest EP, Really Her, today. The EP executive produced by BIA, AzizTheShake and Lil Rich, boasts seven brand-new tracks that feature top flight international acts such as Sfera Ebbasta (Italy), Giggs (UK), Tion Wayne (UK) and Luciano (Germany). The project is available now for download and stream.

[Get ‘REALLY HER (INTL DELUXE) EP’ here]

The standard edition of the Really Her EP released in July and finds BIA collaborating with a multi-generational slate of Hip Hop legends, from J. Cole and Swizz Beatz to Busta Rhymes and Timbaland, a testament to the reputation she’s built as an artist in the last few years. BIA, who raps on her Swizz Beatz collab, “Classy,” that she’s an “outstanding, international icon,” didn’t stop there. Despite the “EP” designation, she expands Really Her to 16 tracks that express the full range of her artistry and further confirm her versatility as a collaborator.

On a new version of “London,” which has amassed over 24 million YouTube views, she welcomes legendary U.K. rapper Giggs as a collaborator. For “Milano,” BIA collaborates with Italian star and rapper Sfera Ebbasta on a drill-adjacent record that also features stateside drill star Fivio Foreign. Elsewhere on the project, BIA infuses elements of U.K. grime beside Pa Salieu and genre-blending Nigerian artist ODUMODUBLVCK, and delivers a high-octane ode to “Dubai” with UK drill veteran Tion Wayne—all records that feel right at home beside much of her catalog. German-based drill artist Luciano, who scored a no. 1 hit on the German charts with BIA in 2022 (“Bamba”), delivers a boisterous chorus on “Lifeline,” another example of their proven chemistry. Though she pushes her creative bounds, BIA continues to find ways to stay true to her musical self-center and shine in each lane she occupies. “This project is a vital part of my career because it has pieces of where I came from, where I am now and hints of my new direction as an artist” says BIA.

BIA’s ascent in recent years has been captivating to witness. After independent success earned her a deal with Epic Records in 2020, BIA quickly generated momentum with the inescapable “Whole Lotta Money,” earning a remix from Nicki MInaj and a multi-platinum certification from the RIAA. Subsequently, her first EP to release on Epic, For Certain, would earn the rapper her first placement on the Billboard 200 albums chart, a clear indicator that she had arrived. Since then, BIA has been no stranger to the charts, impacting the Hot 100 singles chart again with the J. Cole-assisted “London” and notching a Top 20 mark on U.S. Rhythmic with the Timbaland backed “I’m That Bitch,” both of which feature on the standard Really Her EP.

Her impact extends beyond the numbers. Last summer, BIA was called upon to appear on Nicki Minaj’s massive remix to “Super Freaky Girl” alongside the day’s hottest young female stars. This summer, Busta Rhymes invited BIA to feature on his “Beach Ball” single, which the pair performed during the BET Awards’ “Hip Hop 50” segment honoring the culture’s past, current and future stars. She also joined 21 Savage on world-renowned Dutch DJ Tiesto’“Both,” which is at over 7 million streams on SPOTIFY alone. She also released a solo record, “Raised Me,” as part of Google Pixel/Mass Appeal’s Hip Hop 50 campaign and teamed up with Tones And I and Diarra Sylla FIFA 2023 Women’s World Cup official walkout song, “Bring It On.”

Next, the rising star is setting out on her first headlining tour, the Really Her tour along with Lakeyah and Lebra Jolie, kicking off nationally in October.

Tickets are on sale HERE.

As the Beatroute cover subject for the month of September, she tells the Canadian outlet, “I’ve been dying to pull up on my fans, see who they are, who they look like, and see them saying the words with me. I want to go hug them.”
