Polo & Pan Release Four Track EP

Parisian electro duo Polo & Pan today returned with their anticipated four-track EP, Feel Good, following praise for the joyful title single debuted last month. The summer starter is imbued with sounds the pair have become known for – trippy psychedelic tones mixed with carefree paradisiacal melodies. Giving fans a taste of their second full-length album to come, Feel Good is a testament to their deep-rooted historical music knowledge and position as cultural tastemakers at the forefront of revitalizing French Touch.

On the EP, Polo & Pan share: “The more we have traveled, both geographically and from a sonic point of view, the larger the canvas. Imagination is memory and by listening to thousands of songs, syntheses are formed in our creative process. We exchange our ideas and choose the best without ever listening to our ego. We let our fantasies speak. Feel Good takes us sailing on the Nile or exploring across the Amazon.”

Throughout Feel Good, we hear all the influences dear to Polo & Pan, from Moon Safari by AIR – a crucial album that shaped their musical foundation – to notes of the Italian composer Ennio Morricone. Acknowledging their admiration for modern pop music, the single “Feel Good” feeds on vibrant keyboards and uplifting lyricism. “Dreamcatcher” is as synthetic as it is intergalactic. The duo writes: “It’s a love story riddled with doubt but endowed with the naivety and poetry inherent in our songs. It’s through dreams that one can escape and find certain answers to love.” The transcendent “Peter Pan” was written by the band’s vocalist Victoria Lafaurie who accompanies them on tour, along with their friend Antonin. On where they derive inspiration, “We mistakenly think that we have to look in our sufferings and our flaws to be artistically efficient, but neither Alex nor I find ourselves there. Optimism is the glue of Polo & Pan.” The timeless EP allows us to see a picturesque landscape of sun-soaked opportunity.

Last month the French visionaries crafted a grandiose mixtape of rare edits and globally sourced records – a hallmark of their eclectic palette. “Home Sweet Home” served as a primer for their new music on the way as well as a groovy sonic voyage that provided an escape for listeners in isolation. To date, the duo have earned over 280 million streams worldwide, continuing to build on success from their only album released thus far, the critically-acclaimed Gold and Platinum work, Caravelle.

Polo & Pan have spent the better part of the last two years traveling their live show around the world, performing to sold-out crowds in notable venues like LA’s Novo, London’s Printworks, NY’s Terminal 5, and Montreal’s MTELUS. The run saw them play to 30,000 fans in North America alone, with rave performances across leading festival stages including Coachella, CRSSD, Corona Capital, and more. With the postponement of their marquee headline at The Hollywood Bowl this summer, Polo & Pan are back in the studio perfecting their next transportive body of work, sure to push the boundaries of their culturally rich soundscapes once again.

Alabama Students – COVID-19

By Jason Tayer

Various states within the U.S. have taken extreme caution, little caution, and everything in between when it comes to controlling the spreading of COVID-19. As Summer came around, certain states began to open many more businesses and public areas, including bars, restaurants, parks, etc.

These policies, coupled with many citizens yearning to return back to “normal” life, led to a specific group of students in Tuscaloosa, Alabama purposely trying to catch the virus and spread it further. ABC News reports that a number of students, already tested positive for COVID-19, have been organizing parties to “intentionally infect each other with the contagion that has killed more than 127,000 people in the United States.” These students have orchestrated a sort of game where they put money in a pot and whoever contracts the virus wins the money at the end. WAVY News calls this activity playing “Russian Roulette” with the health of these students. Tuscaloosa’s Fire Chief Randy Smith spoke out about this reckless behavior and the Alabama Department of Public Health has reiterated that those tested positive for the virus should remain quarantined for at least 14 days, or else they are subject to violations up to $500.

Since these parties have been reoccurring for several weeks, the state of Alabama has confirmed 10,000 new cases in the past 14 days, which is an alarming amount, considering the fact that there have been a total of approximately 38,000 confirmed cases since March. In this sense, there is a clear correlation between the presence of these coronavirus parties and a huge lump of new confirmed cases in the past two weeks. The CDC denotes the United States as a country with widespread ongoing transmission, and specifically, WHNT News admits that Alabama’s cases have doubled ever since the stay-at-home order was lifted on May 1st. For this reason, it is crucial that all citizens social distance, positively tested citizens quarantine themselves, and students refrain from spreading the virus in any way, especially in the case of parties.

COVID-19 Airline Safety

New COVID-19 safety recommendations for airlines issued today by the Department of Transportation are inadequate, Consumer Reports said. Any such guidelines should be mandatory to ensure passengers are protected from coronavirus risks. The DOT issued guidelines for airlines and airports to follow to address safety concerns during the pandemic, but the agency provides too much leeway to industry and is not using its authority to require industry to follow them.

“Americans are rightfully concerned that they may be putting their health and safety at risk if they choose to fly during a global pandemic,” said William J. McGee, Aviation Advisor for Consumer Reports. “The DOT shouldn’t leave it up to the airlines and airports to decide which COVID-19 safety precautions they will follow to keep passengers safe. These guidelines are a first step, but not enough. Secretary Chao should make any public health standards mandatory to ensure passengers are protected when they travel during this unprecedented crisis.”

Consumer Reports noted that Secretary Chao has the authority to make the COVID-19 safety precautions mandatory using the same authority that past Transportation Secretaries used when requiring airlines to adopt stronger security measures following the September 11th terrorist attacks, and when requiring airlines to include all fees in advertised fares.

In June, Consumer Reports called on Secretary Chao to work with other key administration officials and take an active role in establishing requirements for airlines, airports, and travelers to protect against the transmission of COVID-19 during air travel, including:

· How and whether to screen passengers and employees for COVID-19 before travel
· Appropriate social distancing in airports and airplane cabins
· Use of face masks and other personal protective equipment for passengers and employees
· Appropriate airport and airline cleaning procedures
· Effectiveness of airplane cabin air circulation systems

New Possible Pandemic

By Eamonn Burke

As the coronavirus continues to ravage the United States and the entire world, new concerns have sprung up over another virus with roots in China.

The flu virus is a newer strain of H1N1, a highly contagious and deadly disease that swept the world in 2009 and became a seasonal illness. This new strain, called G4 EA H1N1, first cropped up in 2016 among pig farms in China. It can and has spread to humans through the respiratory system without causing harm, but scientists are warning of the viruses pandemic potential.

Dr. Anthony Fauci says that the virus is not an “immediate threat” but rather “something we need to keep our eye on just the way we did with in 2009 with the emergence of the swine flu.” He has compared the characteristics of the virus as similar to the swine flu as well as the Spanish flu that killed between 30-50 million people.

Although the virus right now does not seem to have deadly or highly transmissible traits, what it does show is “reassortment capabilities” that suggest that it could become a major problem quickly, and one that needs to be controlled urgently. While President Trump falsely asserts that the coronavirus is fading, scientists worry about how the nation would cope with another pandemic on our hands.

Verónica Gago (Ni Una Menos) illustration by Mina Tocalini

Verónica Gago – Feminist International

Recent years have seen massive feminist mobilizations in virtually every continent, overturning social mores and repressive legislation. In this brilliant and original look at the emerging feminist international, Verónica Gago explores how the women’s strike, as both a concept and collective experience, may be transforming the boundaries of politics as we know it.

At once a gripping political analysis and a theoretically charged manifesto, Feminist International draws on the author’s rich experience with radical movements to enter into ongoing debates in feminist and Marxist theory: from social reproduction and domestic work to the intertwining of financial and gender violence, as well as controversies surrounding the neo-extractivist model of development, the possibilities and limits of left populism, and the ever-vexed nexus of gender-race-class. Gago asks what another theory of power might look like, one premised on our desire to change everything.

Verónica Gago is a leader in Argentina’s #NiUnaMenos movement (Not One More!), as both a theoretician and an activist. She is a Professor of Social Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires, Professor at the Instituto de Altos Estudios, Universidad Nacional de San Martín, and Assistant Researcher at the National Council of Research (CONICET). Her work is deeply influenced by active participation in the experience of Colectivo Situaciones, who recorded the Argentine social movements around the 2001 debt crisis with remarkable acuity.

Ashanti Palmer

By: Gabriella Scerbo

For many students, school it is a constant battle, between the early morning wakeup time and the isolation of staying in one building, it’s no wonder by 3:00pm students are exhausted.

Although this battle affected many, it did not affect 17- year old Ashanti Palmer, who never missed a day of school in her life. All the way from Pre-K to 12th grade, her perfect attendance has drastically impacted her life and overall leading to being Mount Vernon City School District class valedictorian at Nellie A. Thornton High School.

The young students inspiring story shows us that hard work pays off-literally. Palmer received over $430,000 in scholarships from all eighteen colleges that she was accepted into. She graduated with a 99.08 average and plans on attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) this fall. You’ve guessed it, she has received a full scholarship, including dorming and a book stipend.

She plans to study biomedical engineering with a pre-medical track. In the future, hoping to receive her M.D. at any Ivy League medical school.

Academically her efforts had landed her a spot on the National Honor Society. Palmer is not just a rockstar in school, but also fills her time outside of school with different extracurriculars and a mentoring program. She is an artist as well, interested in music and poetry.

Due to COVID-19, she gave a virtual commencement speech to the Class of 2020, sharing inspirational words of wisdom.

What can’t she do?

This extraordinary young woman landed a place on Good Morning America and a small segment on abc7NY
