No Trust In Trump

Americans are getting information about the coronavirus pandemic from political leaders and medical professionals, but confidence in those sources varies widely. A recent national survey conducted on behalf of the Fairleigh Dickinson University School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences finds that Americans are more likely to trust information that comes from medical professionals than politicians, with President Trump seen as least trustworthy regarding the information he provides. This and other findings from the survey suggest that Americans are putting their faith in medical expertise when it comes to getting critical information on how to best protect themselves and their loved ones from COVID-19. There are, however, substantial differences in who and what they trust based on a person’s politics and race.

The poll interviewed 1003 American adults nationwide on landlines and cell phones from May 20 through May 25, 2020. Medical professionals top the list of those Americans say they trust most for information about the coronavirus. Fifty-eight percent say they have a “great deal” of trust in doctors and scientists, while government-run websites are trusted by around a third of all Americans (36%). However, once political leaders become the source of information, Americans are more likely to distrust than trust what they see, hear, or read. Around a quarter (27%) have a great deal of trust in statewide elected officials, including their governor, and barely a fifth (22%) fully believe what their president tells them. In fact, the president is the only source who a majority (55%) of Americans distrust rather than trust.

“These findings point to the immense level of distrust Americans have in the ability of elected officials to communicate critical information needed to manage the COVID-19 pandemic and the obvious lack of meaningful leadership at the federal level,” said Bojana Beric-Stojsic, director of MPH program and an Associate Professor of Public Health, FDU School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. “What is most surprising and very distressing is that only 58 percent of Americans have a great deal of trust in doctors and scientists in the midst of a health crisis.”

Americans do give doctors and scientists much higher marks than the president when it comes to evaluating the reasons for evolving and sometimes conflicting information. Almost eight-in-ten believe that doctors and scientists change their recommendations on how to prevent and treat the coronavirus based on newly discovered scientific evidence (77%) rather than bowing to political pressure (23%). The opposite is true when it comes to the president, as more than half (53%) say his recommendations often change for political reasons rather than newly emerging scientific evidence (47%).

There is, however, a significant partisan divide on these issues. Although clear majorities of both Democrats and Republicans say that changing recommendations from doctors and scientists are due to newly discovered scientific evidence, President Trump’s evolving statements are understood very differently. Eighty-four percent of Republicans believe science dictates the president’s statements, while virtually the same percentage of Democrats (86%) believe political pressures explain changes in President Trump’s public statements about how to prevent and treat COVID-19. A huge gap between Democrats and Republicans also characterizes perceptions of the overall trustworthiness of the president (3% versus 47%), with a smaller but still significant difference separating Democrats from Republicans on their willingness to extend a “great deal” of trust to statewide elected officials like the governor (36% versus 20%).

“It’s notable that not even among his own partisans and those who approve of the job he’s done in managing this crisis does the President get a majority to say the information he provides about the coronavirus can be trusted a great deal,” said Krista Jenkins, director of the FDU Poll and professor of government and politics.

There are also significant racial disparities in assessing Trump’s performance and trustworthiness. More black Americans (83%) disapprove of the President’s management of the pandemic compared to 43 percent of white and 62 percent of Hispanic respondents; and 70 percent of blacks have absolutely no trust that the President provides accurate information about the coronavirus, compared to 37 percent of whites and 44 percent of Hispanics. More black Americans (79%) also believe Trump changes his recommendations about the coronavirus due to political pressure compared to 47 percent of whites and 60 percent of Hispanics.

Building off the mega success of the original Platinum Heart album, which surpassed 70 million song downloads and streams, Platinum Heart (Deluxe) rivals its predecessor in innovation and style. The new mixtape opens with seven new tracks, including the tour de force “Club House,” which lays Toosii’s lightning-speed wordplay over a boisterous base of bold, pensive synths. Toosii’s talent is further on display with the street-smart “5 stars.” All available HERE.

The 19-year-old North Carolina rapper continues to build momentum with his artistic prowess, making 2020 his breakout year. Toosii comments on his new release invoking his success and emphatically proclaiming “I put this together because I love my FANS!” HipHopDX characterised Toosii’s new music as a testament to his “melodic flow… driven by his hit ‘Red Lights.’”

Toosii’s music has not only been praised for its eclectic energy but also for its sincere substance and introspection with Complex acknowledging that his “5 star” track “sees Toosii contrast his aspirations against his roots.” This sense of meaning is pervasive throughout Platinum Heart (Deluxe) given the darkly atmospheric hits “Forever Paid” and “Pea Coat,” plus the heart-wrenching “Reminiscing” and freshly rhythmic “Got Her Own” and “Inside Out.”

As a compelling live performer, Toosii has supported such artists as DaBaby, Summer Walker, Polo G, Moneybagg Yo, Money Man, NBA Young Boy, Yung Bleu, City Girls and more. His hypnotic style has thrust him into the upper echelons of his industry where he will, no doubt, only rise higher and higher in fame and esteem. XXL observed, “Toosii has the ability to make turn-up music” and AllMusic praised his “melodic, autobiographical style,” – his autonomous approach is being noticed HERE.

360 Magazine, Justice, Protest

Nationwide Curfews

On the evening of Monday, June 1, President Trump said that he could use the Insurrection Act to enact military force during protests. Former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Homeland Defense Strategy and retired Brigadier General Michael C.H. McDaniel, associate dean at WMU-Cooley Law School, says “It is plausible that the President could use the military to stop protests that turn violent.”

McDaniel, who joined the WMU-Cooley Law School full-time faculty as a professor in the Constitutional Law Department in 2010, and developed an LL.M. program in Homeland and National Security Law, teaches courses on the use of military force in the United States, including the Insurrection Act.

In addition to serving as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Homeland Defense, McDaniel also served under Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm as her Homeland Security Adviser in 2003 and served in that capacity until July 2009. At the same time, he also served as the Assistant Adjutant General for Homeland Security, Michigan National Guard. McDaniel recently led Michigan’s response to the Flint water crisis and often provides support to government agencies during times of disaster.

Muslim Charity Donates Food

In the wake of the shocking Memorial Day police-lynching of George Floyd in Minneapolis — brutal proof of American society’s entrenched sanctioning of racial persecution — Zakat Foundation of America is delivering Tuesday, June 2, a refrigerated trailer full of fresh produce and food to the beleaguered poor locked in neighborhoods shut down by state curfew, police power and fiery violence of murky origin.

“We’re sending more than 18 tons of fresh produce and milk into the Minneapolis neighborhoods near Floyd’s killing, where the personal pain and economic deprivation has hurt most and soared highest,” said Halil Demir, Zakat Foundation’s executive director. “Our partners in relief live and serve the people there: families, the elderly, the sick and so many children. As an international Muslim charity that — as a matter of faith and practice — puts the urgent life-needs of all vulnerable human beings first, no matter their color and whatever their creed, we’ve reached out to them to offer relief to those most vulnerable.”

Two key nonprofit partners — Al-Maa’uun and Building Blocks of Islam — are part of the Minneapolis Muslim Leaders Coalition, a group of local organization heads who’ve held nightly conference calls since Floyd’s murder to assess the growing needs of vulnerable communities and strategize targeted relief responses in them.

“Zakat Foundation was the first national organization to reach out to us to determine how the people of the Twin Cities can be served in this time of crisis,” said Afzal Syed Mohamed, Building Blocks of Islam’s chief coordinator. “Through this support, we’re already planning our community response to ensure those affected have access to essentials like food and safety kits.”

The person coordinating that critical assessment effort, Nabi Naser, directs social services for Building Blocks of Islam, while Imam Makram El-Amine heads up Al-Maa’uun, a community nonprofit he founded to serve the needful.

Fresh Food in a Time of Scarcity

The torching and boarding up of small grocery stores and other local retail shops that normally serve the largely low-income residents have virtually wiped out food and daily supplies’ availability.

Demir, whose international Muslim charity is headquartered near Chicago, said food access, especially to fresh produce, has quickly grown into an immediate crisis for the thousands of poor stranded in these focal-point areas of intervention and reaction — and it is spreading.

“Some of these neighborhoods, people describe as food deserts,” Demir said. “As the sandstorm from the killing and its aftermath intensifies, the dustbowl expands. Thousands of innocents are now caught up in it.”

Demir said he expects the international charity’s first refrigerated shipment to arrive June 2, with fresh-food boxes for at least 1,500 families, each one containing 25 lbs. of produce, including tomatoes, apples, oranges, cucumbers, lettuce, celery, carrots, asparagus, onions, potatoes and other fruits and vegetables. Zakat Foundation will also distribute 400 gallons of fresh milk. “We’re truly grateful that Zakat Foundation took the initiative to help us address the critical need in our community,” said Syed of Building Blocks of Islam.

An Eye on Revitalizing Now Roiling Minneapolis Communities

Demir hopes, as well, to find ways to help small businesses vital to these neighborhoods reopen when the time comes. Most are owned and run by African Americans and immigrants that, importantly, live and work in the area. Proprietors understandably remain fearful for their safety, and that of their family members, workers and stores.

These worries have risen along with widespread reports and rumors of agitators infiltrating peaceful protests to stoke confrontation for extremist causes.

In addition, the crowd-control tactics of enforcing authorities, intimidatingly deployed in phalanxes and full riot gear, have markedly escalated, including shooting rubber bullets and pepper spray, using tear gas and firing incendiaries.

Fears Loom on the COVID-19 Horizon

The police murder of Floyd presents nothing new in America, which has long struggled with increased social, judicial and law-enforcement crises of systematically impoverishing, under-educating, jailing and unaccountably killing African Americans in particular, but also Latinos and others considered outside the strongly racialized, communalized socio-political mainstream.

Yet this unrest has hit Minneapolis (and is now spreading to other major U.S. towns) at a precarious time. The city remains caught in a rising coronavirus pandemic tide. Hennepin and Ramsey counties, which hold Minneapolis and sister-city St. Paul, each project to fall short of available ICU beds in the next three weeks, according to Leavitt Partners, a health care intelligence firm.

The scary confluence of previously unanticipated protest crowds, the violent dismantling of local businesses and essential services infrastructure in these already impoverished neighborhoods, along with a state-wide reopening program now underway, makes a COVID-19 spike in the violence-stricken area seem likely in the coming weeks.

This is all the more disturbing as the Floyd killing and Minneapolis’ and other cities’) subsequent troubles have centered on African American communities generally forsaken in health care deserts and cordoned off in poor neighborhoods. These communities have already scandalously suffered the majority of rampant community coronavirus sickness and death in America. “We’re worried that these neighborhoods and their residents will not have time to recover from all the trauma they’ve suffered through these past months, and now this,” Demir said. “That’s why we’re trying to respond quickly to their multiple levels of humanitarian need, all of which come down to the most human of rights — food, health care and personal safety.

“Some may call this compassion. At Zakat Foundation, as a Muslim charity, we call it by its God-given name: Justice.”

Handling an Unexpected Divorce

What to do when facing an unexpected divorce?

While things between you and your spouse may not have been perfect, you weren’t expecting to be served with divorce papers, now what?

New York divorce attorney, Leslie Montanile has advice for those in this situation;

  1. Identify the paperwork

First, do not panic. Look at the papers and see if your spouse filed with a Summons and Complaint or just a Summons with Notice, regardless look at the end of the document served or on the face of the summons to see if your spouse is represented by an attorney or if he/she is representing themselves – this is called Pro Se.

If there is a law firm identified, you will want to immediately find your own lawyer as you typically only have 20 days to respond to the Complaint – this is called filing an Answer.  If you are not able to find a lawyer in that time frame, don’t worry.  You can respond by going to the Court website listed on the document and find the Answer form (usually there are directions on the Court website to do this on your own) once you find a lawyer, they can amend the answer you filed, if necessary.

If there is only a Summons with Notice, you will want to file a demand for Complaint from your spouse, which should also be done within the 20-day time frame. It is essential to respond in either case so that your spouse is not awarded a default judgment (for your failure to respond) for divorce.

  2. Manage your finances.

Next, if you have a joint bank account with your spouse you will want to go to the bank and take out your share, usually 50%, should you withdraw more you may have to give that back to your spouse at a later date. Open a new bank account at a different bank and consider getting a safety deposit box for relevant documents and other valuables you may have.

If you receive your bills electronically, change your passwords.  If you receive your mail at home, then perhaps you want to consider getting a P.O. Box that comes with a street address.

Collect all of your financial information as soon as possible; mortgage payments, tax returns, utility bills, credit card debt, cars, insurance, etc. If done electronically, make sure to print out statements from each item in case your spouse changes the passwords.

  3. Protect your privacy.

Set up a new e-mail account to use exclusively with your lawyer. Do not use your cell phone as a weapon of self-destruction – refrain from texting anything about your relationship to anyone. Text messages can be revealed during a divorce action, so think twice before your hit send. Stay off of ALL social media, especially if you have children. Anything you put on social media can be used in a divorce action, and while you may think it is harmless, it is often not construed that way. Social media will still be around when your divorce is finalized.

Finally, take a deep breath and look towards your future- if your spouse did not respect you enough to inform you of their desire to end your marriage, then, in the long run, you will be better off without them and know that you will find love again with the right partner.

RR × Charles Rolls

Rolls-Royce is celebrating the 110-year anniversary of Charles Stewart Rolls’ first non-stop double crossing of the English Channel by airplane.

At 6:30 pm on June 2, 1920, aviation pioneer Charles Stewart Rolls took off alone in his flimsy biplane from Swingate aerodome, near Dover, to achieve the world’s first non-stop double crossing of the English Channel by airplane. He had been waiting in frustration for over a week, his departure repeatedly frustrated by high winds, fog or mechanical problems with the machine. But finally, conditions were perfectly calm and clear. Among the spectators on the cliffs were Rolls’ parents, Lord and Lady Llangattock, and his sister and brother-in-law, Sir John and Lady Shelley.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, Rolls reached an altitude of 900 feet and a speed of ‘quite forty miles an hour’ as he approached the coast of France. By 7.15 pm, he was flying over the small French town of Sangatte, where the present-day Channel Tunnel emerges. Leaning out of his airplane, he threw overboard three weighted envelopes, each containing the message: ‘Greetings to the Auto Club of France…Dropped from a Wright airplane crossing from England to France. C. S. Rolls, June 1910. P.S. Vive l’Entente.’’

He then turned northward and set a course for the English coast. At 8.00 pm, he was back in Dover where, the Daily Telegraph reported, “the sea front, cliffs and piers were thronged with people, all in the most intense state of excitement.” Rolls rewarded them in typically flamboyant style, by flying in circles around the outer towers of the town’s medieval castle. “I decided that, as I had plenty of petrol and my engines were working splendidly, I would encircle the Castle, although it would lengthen my flight considerably,” he told the Telegraph correspondent. The crowd loved it. This was more than mere entertainment: they knew they were present at a moment of history.

In an adventure lasting 95 minutes, Rolls had achieved two immortal landmarks. He had become both the first Englishman to fly an airplane across the English Channel, and the first aviator ever to fly non-stop from England to France and back again.

Torsten Müller-Ötvö, Chief Executive Officer of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said “Charles Rolls combined a fine technical mind with a bold, adventurous spirit; it is no wonder that aviation and motoring held such powerful, almost magical attractions for him. He was a true pioneer in both fields, instrrumental in the development of aeroplanes and motor cars with his record-breaking feats.”
