ZEITZ MOCAA’S NEW SCULPTURE

Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) announces a riveting site-specific commission of monumental scale by Malagasy artist Joël Andrianomearisoa titled The Five Continents of All Our Desires. The installation is supported by Fonds Yavarhoussen, Madagascar, and will be on view from 2 August 2022 to 25 June 2023 in the museum’s atrium. 

Andrianomearisoa’s practice encompasses working in multidisciplinary ways — with materiality and scale as important considerations. Imbued with complex emotional experiences, his delicate, often ambiguous works are an ongoing series of ever-evolving exercises that consider the aesthetic and architecture of feelings that all perceive yet cannot put a name to.

Zeitz MOCAA Executive Director and Chief Curator Koyo Kouoh says: “It is a revelation and honour to host an artwork of this scale and ambition in our museum. The generosity and intentionality with which Joël approached this commission is a testament to the extraordinary, multiplistic views of our world for which this institution is intended. To hold, to speak, to listen and to love — sentiments and values that echo our mission are brought centre stage with this incredible work.”

The Five Continents of All Our Desires is a celebration of relations and connections. For Andrianomearisoa, the work speaks to both migration and language — and the ongoing search for zones of engagement and desire. He constructs a view of the world that is fragile, ambiguous, open-ended and about new possibilities for human contact.

The awe-inspiring work consists of six large-scale sculptures that form a suspended archipelago in a poetic reference to land masses and geographies of the imagination, and are constructed from Andrianomearisoa’s signature material, black silk paper. Installed in the figurative and literal ‘heart’ of the museum building, the work is the first site-specific commission to grace Zeitz MOCAA’s atrium in two years. 

The Five Continents of All Our Desires is conceived in dialogue with the concrete interior of the museum, and what remains of the original silos of the building,” adds Storm Janse van Rensburg, Zeitz MOCAA Senior Curator and Head of Curatorial Affairs. “It is both in play and in visual tension with its surroundings. Whilst appearing as large black masses, the thin and soft materiality of the work allows for subtle atmospheric responses to become visible —such as paper rustling due to airflows caused by human movement.” 

The Five Continents of All Our Desires is accompanied by a sound installation, and a display of 40 drawings — a first, significant showing of the artist’s graphic works in an exhibition. Visitors can also experience a set of specially designed furniture by the artist. Andrianomearisoa has further collaborated with the Zeitz MOCAA curatorial team and retail partners of the museum to develop an exclusive range of objects that will be on sale. All proceeds from sales will support the museum’s work.

How the Metaverse Could Save Cultural Institutions

Museums and cultural institutions are in trouble. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, these institutions learned that the typical business model of earning revenue through in-person ticket sales, event rentals and once-a-year galas was too fragile to be sustainable. In March 2020, it was estimated that 15 percent of the world’s museums would be forced to permanently close. By spring 2021, this number reached 37 percent, and today, 25 percent of U.S. museums have less than four months of funding to survive.

So how can the ‘Metaverse’ help? The ‘Metaverse’ provides cultural institutions a way to step outside the traditional four walls, providing them with the tools to explore and expand their reach in a digital environment. The result? Increased revenue and a chance to avoid permanent closure. 

What is the ‘Metaverse’?

The ‘Metaverse’ refers to a host of virtual worlds encased in a technology called blockchain. And while the ‘Metaverse’ is referred to as an ‘emerging’ space, it’s simply a rehash of a concept that has been around for a long time: a virtual world that includes the ability to create a virtual self and interact with others in this world.

The ‘Metaverse’ became increasingly important during the COVID-19 pandemic as audiences turned to digital worlds rather than the physical. And although much of the world is living in some sort of ‘post-pandemic’ society, the use of virtual worlds (and ‘Metaverses’) can continue to encourage engagement in new ways.

‘Metaverses’  function using blockchain technology, a distributed digital database that stores information about any transaction that’s taken place in its network. A Non-Fungible Token (NFT) is a type of token exchanged within this network that can store information about assets such as artwork or artifacts. We can use this distributed database as a resource to authenticate tokens and identify who owns a particular NFT—which is really just a receipt or certificate of ownership. A blockchain provides a decentralized means to store these receipts. 

‘Metaverses’ provide a playground in which to display and exchange NFTs. These NFTs could represent digital assets, such as pieces of virtual land or artworks that could be displayed in a virtual gallery. In other words, ‘Metaverses’ present NFTs in their natural (digital) environment.  

Solving A Problem

The ‘Metaverse’ allows us to create a new model to support the culture & heritage industry. Through it, heritage organizations, museums and cultural institutions can engage new stakeholders digitally, while showcasing the stories of archival assets, creating sustainability within the industry and preserving history permanently on the blockchain.

This combination of digital ownership and online interaction highlights an opportunity for museums. Iconic Moments guides cultural institutions into this space by asking them to rethink the museum experience and provide a new digital and creative environment for audiences to explore the collections.

We also support cultural institutions in creating an alternative dynamic revenue stream through NFTs. This will give institutions the much-needed income lost during the pandemic. NFTs will also provide audiences with a way to own and interact with different pieces of history and culture.

Two examples of cultural institutions and organizations looking to the ‘Metaverse’ to generate revenue through NFTs are the National Broadcast Museum in Chicago and the Universal Hip Hop Museum planned for Brooklyn. The National Broadcast Museum holds assets of the most meaningful moments in television and radio in our country’s history. Iconic Moments is working with this museum to create NFTs of significant broadcasts that can be sold to patrons and consumers, such as President Truman’s radio address announcing the end of World War 2. 

Meanwhile, Iconic Moments is working with the Universal Hip Hop Museum to explore alternative methods of fundraising, as this much talked about institution is employing an NFT campaign to raise the capital needed to build the museum. Because Hip Hop is itself a multifaceted experience involving both music and art, the NFT is an ideal format.

As the museum industry continues to explore the ‘Metaverse’ and benefit from NFT technology, consumers will find new ways to engage with the culture and history that is meaningful to them while providing much-needed financial support to the institutions they cherish.

The IAM Inverted Art Museum encourages individuals to tap into the complex spectrum of human emotion while they traverse through an array of vibrant exhibition rooms. As they are guided through these thematic rooms, time halts, and guests become fully immersed in the singular moment of time as the visual storytelling of each exhibition unravels in front of them.

The uniqueness of IAM comes from the museum’s ability to capture a visual record of history, igniting feelings of nostalgia, happiness and curiosity in its audiences. Each room acts as a different urban landscape unfolding the various personalities of New York City. From the gritty to the luxurious, the uptown bound trains to the empty apartments in Billionaires Row, the unexpected nature of the inverted rooms can be described as physical surrealism, showing off the unanticipated and often illogical juxtapositions of the city’s identity. 

IAM recognizes that each unique piece of art acts as an entryway to the artist’s cultural, political, and socio-economic circumstances. Culture and art are created by ordinary people, and their collective experiences shape the perception of the world around them. Staying true to its mission of visual storytelling, the IAM Inverted Art Museum is also prioritizing work installations by Ukrainian artists in the hopes of aiding those who are affected by the unjust war. A percentage of ticket purchases go towards rebuilding schools and helping kids in Ukraine. IAM works directly with a number of charities to ensure that all donations are going towards rebuilding Ukraine and aiding families in need. The museum will also hold an auction for a large-scale Ukrainian flag built out of lego blocks and 100% of the profits made from the auction will go towards war relief efforts in Ukraine.

The IAM Inverted Art Museum is also proud to be supporting Ukrainian artists seeking to come to the United States Under the O-1B visa, otherwise known as the Artists Visa. Selected artists will receive assistance with navigating through the O-1B petition process. Please note that we do not cover the cost of application fees or lawyers, rather we help applicants fill out their petitions as an alternative route to hiring a lawyer. Our team members have first-hand experience with applying for the O-1B visa and can help applicants with the completion of their own Visa application.

Masterpieces from the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris

Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris (MAM) and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao now present the new exhibition From Fauvism to Surrealism: Masterpieces from the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris. The exhibition is sponsored by the BBVA Foundation, which has been able to showcase an array of around 70 art pieces by revolutionary artists.

The pieces exemplify the history of the MAM paired with a display of the artistic efforts that encompassed Paris during the leading decades in the 20th century. The bravery and freedom of fauvist and cubist artists in the two movements during this time period was deemed scandalous. The movements were able to transform conventional interpretation of portraiture, landscape and still-life.

MAM was developed on the Exposition Internationale (1937) as a homestead to modern art collections of the city of Paris. Exposition Internationale grew promptly in years after as more and more art was acquired by significant artists of the Parisian art scene, becoming a formal museum in 1961. Sponsors like Dr. Maurice Girardin provided vital support for the project, as his museum endowment of 1953 became the core for the collection of modern masters.

The pieces of the museum are arranged chronologically over three sections. The sections begin at the top of 20th century and lead to the time after World War II. The variety of artwork in this exhibition illustrates a historical viewpoint of the key protagonists that were so convoluted in crucial artistic movements.

ARTLIFE GALLERY

ArtLife is an innovative contemporary art gallery and lifestyle brand with a focus on contemporary, pop and street art. The gallery was founded by veteran Art Advisor and Manager, Avery Andon in 2015, as one of the first online-only international Blue-Chip art galleries. Given the high momentum Miami is currently experiencing, the team felt it was the right time to debut this temporary pop-up in the Miami Design District. ArtLife has created a space where visitors can be immersed in works by some of the world’s most celebrated artists including Andy Warhol, Keith Hering, and Banksy. Additionally, ArtLife also provides the opportunity for visitors to experience works by a range of up-and-coming artists such as Cory Van Lew and Jannie Holmes.  ArtLife Gallery will be on view through the end of June.

QUINAZ STUDIO’S BAY STORE

Using only materials sourced from Biscayne Bay and the Miami River, artist/designer James Quinaz transforms trash into treasure for BAY STORE. Part exhibition, part performance, BAY STORE invites you to watch the design process as Quinaz navigates the detritus in our waterways to produce thoughtful, functional furniture before your eyes. BAY STORE asks the viewer to consider the cost of excess and reckon with a society that litters its priceless natural landscapes with cheap plastics, foams, and other harmful waste. Visitors will have the opportunity to watch the artist work, learn about the issues facing South Florida’s precious aquatic resources, and purchase one-of-a-kind pieces from the gallery. 10% of the proceeds will be donated to nonprofits working to keep our bay and ocean clean.

NEW WORLD SCHOOL OF ARTS PRESENTS UNSPECIFIC VOID: 2021 BFA EXHIBITION

NWSA presents the 2021 Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition. Despite the challenges the pandemic has brought, the students persevered and continued to work in makeshift studios at home and produced an incredible body of work. The work included in the exhibition ranges from documentation of the pandemic to heartbreak to futuristic imagination, among other themes. The exhibition culminates these young artists’ academic training at the school and will present a wide range of media and themes. Twenty-eight recent graduates will participate in the exhibition.

“THE GROTTO” BY EMMETT MOORE

Part fiction, part reality, The Grotto is an immersive installation comprised of faux coral boulders sculpted into a secluded lounge, inspired by coral rock quarries and the mythology surrounding the fictional identities that form around these places, where the young and the marginalized gather to sequester themselves and share pleasures. The Grotto also takes cues from local sites such as the Coral Castle and the Venetian Pool where the quarrying of coral rock acquiesced to a mystical landscape, and a fantasy Venetian enclave. Each a tropical fantasy created by man in an effort to transport visitors to an otherworldly place. The Grotto is part pavilion, part folly, where one can escape from everyday life. Emmett Moore’s Grotto Lounge is on permanent display.

APOLLO PROJECTS ‘LANDED’

Apollo ‘Landed’ is the initial iteration of the first plant exhibition to take place in Miami Design District. All artists involved were invited to create, with nature as collaborator and muse, bringing attention to a living, shifting climate and all her inhabitants. From May to July, this pop-up will be hosting activations and installations, focused on reconnecting with the environments around us, where locals are invited to create art, with nature as their muse.

JADE ALLEY FILMS 2021

A collaborative year-long art video feature, Jade Alley Films: 2021 features four artist video selections by the District’s key institutions, including Locust Projects, de la Cruz Collection, and ICA Miami. From April 1 to June 30, the Miami Design District will feature ‘Outage’ by Philadelphia-based artists: Jennifer Levonian and Eva Wylie. Originally commissioned and premiered by Locust Projects in 2019, Outage is a video that utilizes Levonian’s signature cut-paper animation technique, which incorporates deftly rendered watercolors into short films that wryly depict prescient social narratives and Eva Wylie’s unique printmaking techniques. The single-channel animation was made from over 3,000 frames and more than 275 screens were used to create pieces for the animation.

BREAKWATER BENCH BY AMLGMTD 

Ideated by design duo AMLgMTD, the Breakwater Bench is a system of individual benches inspired by the lapping ebb and flow pattern of waves. The slight shift in the repetition of a single element creates movement between the open and closed sections within the design. This simple use of geometry causes playful shadows to appear where the light filters through the open structure.

Michael Krebber – Studiofloor and Diamond Paintings

From 29th May 2021 to 8th January 2022, the Antonio Dalle Nogare Foundation presents Michael Krebber’s first solo exhibition in Italy, entitled Studiofloor and Diamond Paintings. Find more information here

Michael Krebber (b. Cologne, 1954) is an internationally acclaimed artist and a figure central to the German art scene between the 1980s and ‘90s. Over the years he has become a reference point for a generation of younger artists, thanks to his constant and attentive focus on questioning the conventions and limits of the medium of painting, which he sees as a space for dialogue and a cross-genre hotbed, rather than something focused on the production of an object. 

For decades, Krebber’s art has been distinguished by a conceptual approach to painting, based on the conviction that it is impossible to invent anything new in art, as everything has already been invented. Rather than inventing something new, Krebber’s minimal and apparently unresolved interventions present the viewer with canvases that are open and full of possibilities. Like an unfinished sentence, his works leave the viewer free to imagine what might happen. 

The painting is viewed by the artist almost as a performance. It has been defined as a system of hesitations in which opposing forces simultaneously motivate and block one another, an approach that expands painting beyond the conventional notion of the artwork as an object. 

Krebber’s incomplete aesthetic, however, is not the result of an attempt to sabotage the medium, but stems rather from an explicit desire to extend dialogue beyond the canvas and space traditionally attributed to painting. This intention emerges clearly in the two series displayed in the exhibition.  

The series entitled studiofloor MK/P MK19/087/1-8 (2000), was presented with an enigmatic image on the cover of Artforum in 2005. In an exhibition staged several years ago, Krebber asked collectors to loan a series of his own paintings that he laid out on large tables in the centre of the room. Turning the common notion of display on its head, the walls – on which the paintings would normally have hung – were left empty and covered with large masonite panels from the artist’s floor, cut and positioned on the wall like paintings.

The second series displayed in the exhibition also replaces traditional painting techniques with a readymade approach.

In the fourteen Diamond Painting (2003) canvases, Krebber systematically demystifies, as the title of the series suggests, the centrality of subject and technique in painting by proposing a space that is open to suspension and incompleteness. So, store- purchased fabrics, decorated with pre-printed patterns, replace the traditional canvas, and become the surface on which Krebber paints simple geometrical white diamond shapes. As often happens in his work, the reference to influential German artists, in this case that have used fabric, like Rosemarie Trockel and Sigmar Polke, reveals his profound knowledge of art history and contemporary painting. Top Florida Officials Enjoy an Andean Celebration as Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru Makes its World Premiere Announcement at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, The Captivating Museum Experience Featuring 192 Artifacts, Including the Most-Impressive Collection of Andean Gold Ever to Travel the World, is Coming to Boca Raton in October!

This fall, South Floridians and tourists from across the globe will discover a culture that thrived in a mythical world thousands of years ago. World Heritage Exhibitions announced today the world premiere of Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru, opening on October 16, 2021. The first stop of a worldwide tour will take place at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. Cityneon presents the exhibition with support from the Government of Peru, the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, and in partnership with Inkaterra Asociacion. The artifacts in the exhibition are on loan from Museo Larco in Lima, Peru, and Museo de Sitio Manuel Chávez Ballón in Aguas Calientes, Peru. 

Today’s world-premiere announcement provided authentic Andean entertainment throughout the Boca Raton Museum of Art featuring Miami-based Peruvian artists, including Peruvian music by Kuyayky, artwork by Roberto Carlos Olivia Hernandez, and ceramics by Polo Ramirez. Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer and Visit Florida Regional Partnership Manager Lindsey Norris were on-site today to welcome representatives of the exhibition and partner institutions. In addition, a welcoming video statement from Florida Secretary of State Laurel M. Lee was presented. PromPeru, the Peruvian tourism bureau, supported today’s event.

Due to the current global pandemic, the need for social distancing, and other measures to prevent the coronavirus spread, the number of visitors allowed to visit Machu Picchu yearly has dipped to 250,000. This exhibition expands the ability to experience Machu Picchu to the world. Here, the first-ever virtual reality experience of Machu Picchu will be unveiled, allowing guests a window into the unrivaled beauty and flourishing landscape.

The Art Museum That Spans 700 Islands

Thousands of pieces of artwork dot the landscapes that kiss the Seto Inland Sea in Setouchi both outside to greet visitors, and as well as lining the halls of every type of gallery housing. ART IN SETOUCHI

Setouchi spans over 700 islands, 12 of which are heavily used for the exceptional Triennale where visitors flock every 3 years to spy curious and creative works from artists ranging from emerging to renowned. Guggenheim Presents José Manuel Ballester

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents José Manuel Ballester [2020/03/15], which will be open to the public over the next three months. The project consists of a series of photographs taken by the artist around the deserted streets of locked-down Bilbao last spring, exhibited alongside About the Guernica, 2009/2020 by Ballester, an emptied-out version of Picasso’s painting that conveys a contemporary perspective on the historical event and human tragedy.

This project as a whole offers a reflection on the consequences of serious events such as wars or pandemics. Thus, the dialogue between the ‘emptied out’ Guernica and the photographs of the apparently uninhabited city presents the viewer with an interesting and open reflection.

This project bears witness to the period of lockdown through a selection of large-scale photographs that reflect the deserted streets and spaces of Bilbao such as La Salve Bridge, Elcano, the Metro and Calle Bailén, casting an almost unreal image that could represent the current situation anywhere in the world.

In the words of Ballester, “The human absence on the streets created unusual images of totally empty roads, avenues, and squares, but the most disturbing part was knowing that all the inhabitants were there, that they were just a few meters from me, protected within the walls of their homes. Despite being so close, silence reigned supreme.”

This portrait of the uninhabited city has many parallels with the artistic vision José Manuel Ballester has been developing for years through his impressive series of works called Hidden Spaces, in which he reinterprets key paintings in the history of art devoid of their characters, giving them a new artistic and human sense.

About the Guernica is a photographic reproduction printed on linen, the same size as Picasso’s original canvas, digitally treated to empty the space of all its human characters. Thus, the architectural interior, with its interplay of light and shadow, remains a silent witness to the bombing of Gernika in 1937. Ballester shifts Picasso’s chosen time sequence to a later time, in which all of the protagonists have disappeared, but in which, in the artist’s words, “the signs of the inhuman remain, as do the flames of the fire that still burns, like the flower that blossoms from the sword”.

The experience provided within the museum itself is complemented by a digital project that develops the concept of emptiness so strongly present in Ballester’s work, accessible from the Museum’s website. In addition, a book has been published that includes the series of twenty photographs taken by the artist in the streets of Bilbao alongside his reinterpretation of Picasso’s work, with comments by Carlos del Amor.

A Collaborative Project

This project is presented to the public in a time of restrictions. After the lockdown and the Museum’s temporary closure last spring, current mobility constraints and economic difficulties make it hard for initiatives to move forward. It is in these challenging times when collaborations and the sum of efforts acquire new value, working together to make a project became a reality.

[2020/03/15] José Manuel Ballester would have been impossible without the generous collaboration of three companies: Estudios Durero has been responsible for the production of the large-scale photographic reproductions with special high-quality printing solutions, in addition to the creation and publication of a homonymous book; Giroa-Veolia has carried out the installation and lighting of the works in the special context that we are going through, and LIN3S has developed the digital experience that, for the first time in the Museum, shows in an innovative way not only the pieces presented in the Museum space but also some others by the artist that complete his project for the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

 Hidden Spaces in the Museum Collection

José Manuel Ballester’s intervention on Guernica and on the other works included in the Hidden Spaces series is, in his own words “an attempt to bring into the present moment the events that motivated the creation of these works and to equate them with the current conflicts that exist in the world. These are events that scandalize and move us, but, at the same time, they fade away in our consciousness when they are far away.”

“When you strip paintings of their characters, you’re faced with a desolate, absurd landscape that brings out the horror in the wake of human savagery,” said Ballester.

Three works by José Manuel Ballester belonging to the Hidden Spaces series are present in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Collection: The Third of May (2008), The Royal Palace (2009) and The Raft of the Medusa(2010). These works are reinterpretations, respectively, of The 3rd of May 1808 (1814) by Francisco de Goya, Las Meninas (1656) by Diego Velázquez, and The Raft of the Medusa (1818–19) by Théodore Géricault.

The Museum of Art × Photography to launch digitally

The Museum of Art & Photography (MAP) will launch digitally on Saturday, 5 December, an opportunity to reach global audiences with the great art of the sub-continent. Their new building delayed by COVID, MAP nevertheless moves ahead,  presenting a week-long virtual program of events entitled Art (is) Life and inaugurating their Museums Without Borders initiative.

MAP’s digital platform will offer curated experiences, allowing audiences to interact with MAP’s exhibitions and events from the comfort of their homes at any time.  MAP has a growing collection of over 18,000 artworks, predominantly from the subcontinent and dating from the 10th century to the present, with concentrations in Pre-Modern Art, Modern and Contemporary Art, Photography, Folk and Tribal Art, Popular Culture, Textiles, Craft and Design.

Founder-Trustee of MAP, Abhishek Poddar says, “Our vision at MAP is to reach out to people from all walks of life and make the collection available to the world. Then why should we wait for a physical museum to come up? Launching digitally is the organic next step for MAP, achieving our agenda of inclusion and accessibility. To be truly relevant museums and cultural institutions need to always rethink and reinvent themselves, Even more so in challenging times like these. MAP’s digital launch marks the birth of a new museum for a new era.”

MAP’s digital launch is a week-long program of events titled Art (is) Life from 5-11 December, 2020. The opening session on Saturday, 5 December will showcase some of the most innovative performances in music, dance, poetry and technology, by leading Indian professionals including art historian Dr. B. N. Goswamy, filmmaker Nandita Das, and visual artist, Jitish Kallat. Each subsequent day of the program will celebrate one of the six departments of the museum’s collection including a commissioned performance. Each day’s programs will air twice, making them convenient for all time zones at 7pm (IST) and again at 5pm (EST)

“Art (is) Life is a culmination of everything we hope our museum to be,” says Kamini Sawhney, the Director of MAP. “The opening program will showcase how the arts are interconnected, each enriching the others. This is reflective of the Museum’s vision to draw connections across the collection, creating unique narratives. We are working on creative ways to bring art to everyone. The launch program of commissioned performances and collaborations with international institutions is  a  preview for what is to come regularly with MAP.”

The program will also launch the first five episodes of Museums Without Borders, video collaborations with 50 international institutions that will juxtapose a pair of objects, one from an international collection and one from MAP’s, to discover the differences and connections. Participating institutions include the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), The Morgan Library and Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Vitra Design Museum, and the Rhode School of Design. This dialogue between the objects will be presented by curators from both institutions. Museums Without Borders allows audiences to discover new narratives and make comparisons without travel, an interesting alternative to gallery displays.

MAP’s Shubhasree Pirkayastha explores highlights from our indigenous art collection, these objects act as a tribute to traditional storytelling.
