Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack Foundation Awards $1 Million to 100 Black College students

Travis Scott’s Waymon Webster Scholarships, Now in Their Second Year, Ensures Black Students Experiencing Last-Minute Financial Adversity Graduated From College – A Foundational Component of Scott’s Project HEAL Effort, Announced Earlier This Year.

Family Effort: Scholarship is Named for Travis Scott’s Grandfather, an HBCU Educator, and Spearheaded by Scott’s Sister, Jordan Webster – Who Graduated From Howard University Herself This Past Week.

Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack Foundation announced that it has awarded $1 million in scholarships for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to 100 members of the graduating class of 2022. With Scott’s support, the Waymon Webster Scholarship Fund granted $10,000 scholarships to seniors who have reached academic excellence (averaging 3.5 or higher GPA) but have faced the all-too-common last-minute challenge of financial adversity in the second semester of their senior year. The scholarships will bring 100 students over the finish line, diploma in hand. This is the second year that Scott has supported HBCUs and represents a tenfold increase.  

The scholarship is named after Waymon Webster to honor his lifetime of dedication to academic excellence for Black students. This year’s recipients include graduating seniors from 38 HBCUs, including Alabama A&M University, Central State University, Florida A&M University, Jackson State University, Morehouse College, Texas Southern University, Grambling State University, Xavier University of Louisiana, and Prairie View A&M University – Scott’s grandfather’s alma mater where he also served as an educator. Standout recipients include:

  1. Nisha Encarnacion, a graduate from Florida A&M University from St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, received a degree in Pharmacy. While supporting her mother and caring for her daughter throughout college, Nisha paid her own way to achieve her dream. View her thank you here.
  2. Chisom Okwor, a computer science graduate from Fisk University passionate about the technology industry, specifically the inclusive and improvement of representation in the tech space. Chisom’s goal is to use technology to transform developing countries in Africa. View her thank you here.
  3. Jordan Massey, a mass communications graduate with a concentration in broadcast journalism from North Carolina Central University, has incurred personal debt to achieve his goal of graduating college and entering the field of communications. View his thank you here.

Travis Scott said: “Excellence abounds in every Black household, but too often opportunity does not – and Black students are left behind or counted out. So that’s what my family and I set out to change. We congratulate all 100 scholarship recipients this year. I know we will see great things from them – and we are already looking forward to increasing our work next year.” 

Jordan Webster, Project Manager for the Cactus Jack Foundation’s Waymon Webster Scholarship Fund, a recent Howard University graduate, and sister to Travis Scott, said: “Last week, I received my own diploma from Howard University. I know personally how deeply important my grandfather’s academic legacy at HBCUs is to my entire family – to Travis, as well as my twin brother Josh who is at Prairie View A&M University – and now, to 100 people that Travis has been able to help out at a tough time. It means the world to me to be able to work with my brother as he creates hope and makes a real difference for our peers and their families.” 

Marc Morial, President and CEO of the National Urban League, said: “Black students are less than half as likely to graduate from college as white students, and financial pressure is the primary reason. We applaud Travis Scott and the Cactus Jack Foundation for investing in the next generation and congratulate the 100 Waymon Webster Scholarship recipients on their graduation.”

Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra wins 2022 Eurovision

The great favorite of the bets to win the crystal microphone confirmed all the forecasts: The Kalush Orchestra band have won the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest for Ukraine with their song ‘Stefania’!

In addition to the talent, the fascinating rhythms with the mixture of modern hip-hop with classic Ukrainian folk, the successful band unleashed a wave of sympathy this week at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 as the representative of a country destroyed by the complicated situation that Ukrainians are suffering against the Russian invasion.

Kalush’s proposal has become a complete representation of the Ukrainian resistance despite the fact that the song festival tries to be on the sidelines of politics and its conflicts. Indeed, the Ukrainian delegation had to change its lighting, since in the first rehearsals it referred to the country’s flag.

However, everything in the Ukrainian proposal recalls the most characteristic features of the Ukrainian people. Some of the performers are wearing traditional historical costumes from the early 20th century: Oleh wore an authentic festive keepar, a vest of the Hutsul – an ethnic group from the Carpathian Mountains – to which he gives a modern twist, with a pink bucket hat and Tymofiy wore the full costume of the same traditional origin. ‘We’re showing off our roots, and we’re showing how to take something from the past and make it work for the present. That’s why we’ve found success at home, and we hope that we can find that sort of reception internationally, as well. We take something old, and we make it sound modern’, affirms the successful band to the official Eurovision website.

This is Ukraine’s third victory at Eurovision. The last one was achieved exactly on May 14, 2016, in Stockholm and the first came just one year after its debut in the European competition, in 2004 in Istanbul. On this occasion, the performance of Kalush Orchestra has been one of the most exciting of Eurovision 2022, thus achieving 631 points, of which 439 of them by the audience, the maximum awarded by the popular vote.

Nestled within Eataly’s marketplace, Toscana occupies an intimate dining room inspired by the famous gardens and historic architecture of its namesake region. Upon entering the 94-seat eatery set behind ivy-covered arches, guests are welcomed with an open woodfire grill and contemporary Tuscan-style decor, offering a convivial atmosphere reminiscent of the Tuscan countryside. 

The menu features classic dishes that emphasize Tuscany’s ancient culinary heritage and take guests on a sensory journey through the streets of Florence. Over centuries, cooks perfected recipes born from peasant traditions like Ribollita, the staple Tuscan comfort dish of stewed beans, and Ravioli Maremmani, pillowy pasta squares filled with ricotta and spinach and topped with Così Com’è tomato sauce. The Instagram-worthy cocktail menu features beloved classics with Las Vegas flair, like creative takes on the infamous Old-fashioned and the Corpse Reviver No. 2. Highlighted on the menu is the Negroni Toscana where guests are invited to build their own cocktail with a selection of gin, bitters, and vermouth. There’s even a Not Not Negroni section for variations on the Italian classic like a Boulevardier, where whiskey replaces gin.

No Tuscan meal would be complete without an extensive wine collection. From the western shore regions of Bolgheri to the historic villages of Chianti and Montalcino, guests are invited to take a 700 year journey through Tuscany’s noble winemaking legacy with a selection of over 450 Italian wines and over 30 wines by the glass.

After dinner, guests can choose from an impressive dolce selection or house-made gelato served tableside with an array  of toppings like Fabbri Amarena cherries and flourless chocolate crumble. Adventurous guests can also explore a large amaro and grappa selection for an after-dinner digestivo. At the conclusion of service, all guests are invited to try housemade cantucci, a traditional Tuscan almond cookie.

The Hot Wheels™ Legends Tour returns to the Lone Star State on Saturday, May 14 for an epic day of custom car competition at the Houston-area Walmart Supercenter in Spring, Texas. Featuring fan-built art cars, slabs, Texas muscle, imports and everything in between, this family-friendly event is set to showcase the best of Houston’s custom car culture, Hot Wheels, Garage of Legends life-size vehicles, local automotive legends and H-Town celebrities, along with collectables available exclusively on the Tour.

The select panel of judges consists of Hot Wheels designers and local car afficionados, who will be on the hunt for the custom build that best showcases creativity, authenticity and garage spirit. Judges for this stop include: Houston rapper and philanthropist Trae tha Truth; Smithy Customs owner and head designer Justin Smith; Recoil Racing owner Jerry Dellaportas; president of West Houston Muscle and founder of Nerdtropolis Sean Tajipour; paint and bodywork specialist Veronica Ramos, along with Ted Wu and Phil Riehlman from the HotWheels design team.

Spanning 15 countries and 5 continents, the Hot Wheels Legends Tour is now in its fifth year, giving builders around the world a platform to showcase their passion projects. The winner of the May 14 stop in Houston will move on to compete in the Global Grand Finale later this year, where the champion will have their custom build immortalized as an official Hot Wheels 1:64 die-cast and inducted as a permanent fixture into the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends.
