SAN CLEMENTE PALACE KEMPINSKI UNVEILS ART EXHIBITS AROUND VENICE BIENNALE

Betty Boop by Joana Vasconcelos

San Clemente Palace Kempinski Venice, the luxury resort located on its own private island in the Venetian lagoon, just eight minutes away from St. Mark’s Square, has launched two new exhibits in honor of the 58th Venice Biennale. Sculptures by English artist Tony Cragg and Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos are both currently on display around the resort’s historic gardens.

Tony Cragg’s four sculptures are currently on display at San Clemente Palace: his works Caught Dreaming, Runner and We are exhibited in the main garden, while his work Pair is on display in the hotel’s lobby. These artworks will be on display until November 17, 2019. Cragg currently lives in Wuppertal, Germany, and is known for creating sculptures that reference nature.

Meanwhile, San Clemente Palace is also exhibiting works by renowned Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos in a new exhibit curated by Nina Moaddel titled, What are you hiding? May you find what you are looking for. To create this exhibit, Vasconcelos was inspired by the 58th Venice Biennale’s theme, May you live in interesting times, with artworks referencing Portuguese pop culture, while reinterpreting contemporary art. Vasconcelos’ works play with the viewers’ perception through a sharp sense of humor that shuns dogmatism and at the same time explores issues of identity, migration and the exploitation of women.

On display in San Clemente Palace’s 12th-century church is Vasconcelos’ large-scale sculpture, called Madragoa (2015-2019), inspired by Lisbon’s façades, and exploring the intersections of art and architecture. In the gardens of San Clemente Palace is a piece titled, I’ll be Your Mirror #1 (2019), a giant Venetian carnival mask made of mirrors, which has previously been exhibited in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. Viewers can look through the mask from any angle without ever losing sight of their own reflection. Also featured in the gardens is Betty Boop PA (2019), Vasconcelos’ most iconic work and part of the artist’s famous shoes series. The high-heeled shoe is crafted out of saucepans and questions the meaning of the word “feminine” in today’s world. Vasconcelos first became known internationally after her participation in the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005; and in 2012, she became the first woman (and the youngest artist) to exhibit at the Palace of Versailles.

New website exposing funeral home pricing controversy

Ninety-one percent of funeral homes and crematories across the country have never posted their prices online. Now there is a platform that has the prices and more: Funeralocity.com is a free comparison website offering users the largest search results of prices and locations of funeral homes and cremation providers in the US. Whether you are arranging an imminent service for a loved one or a future one for yourself, Funeralocity.com is an invaluable resource with its independently compiled and up-to-date information for the top 100+ metro areas in the country. With a simple search, you can find options in all 50 states.

“Planning a funeral is one of the most sensitive, emotional times in a person’s life, and Funeralocity.com is a tool that makes the experience less painful,” says Ed Michael Reggie, the site’s founder. “We offer the largest and most up-to-date set of prices for funeral homes and crematories that users can search in the privacy of their homes. Often, people planning services are not in the location of their loved one, so finding a funeral home from afar can be a daunting process. Funeralocity.com makes it easier.”

“We are bringing transparency to the funeral business,” Reggie continues.  “People planning services are often doing it for the first time and don’t know where to begin. Funeralocity.com is the place to compare all options in one place.”

Additionally, the site includes a special designation of “Excellence Provider” that indicates a fully-vetted funeral home that meets the site’s exacting standards. The criteria for accepting a funeral provider that applies for this designation include confirming licenses, and government standards compliance and requiring adherence to Funeralocity.com’s Excellence pledge.

“Distinguishing the most qualified funeral homes is key to the mission of Funeralocity.com,” Reggie noted. “We already furnish the most up-to-date pricing and information, but pointing consumers to the very best providers is a core objective of our business. Our ‘Excellence Providers’ are funeral homes and crematories that meet our very strict criteria and pledge to continue to offer those services that have made them the most reputable in their communities.”

The pledge includes a commitment to:

  • Maintain strict compliance with the letter and spirit of all laws and regulations that impact the funeral consumer, the funeral profession, and public health
  • Serve families in a professional and caring manner, be respectful of their wishes and confidences, honest and fair in all dealings with them, and considerate of those of limited means
  • Carry out all aspects of services in a competent and respectful manner
  • Refrain from engaging in any unprofessional conduct to deceive, defraud, or harm the public or the families being served
  • Refrain from engaging in false or misleading advertising
  • Maintain active community involvement and outreach
  • Protect confidential information pertaining to the deceased or the family of the deceased from disclosure in compliance with all laws and regulations
  • Charge families based upon its General Price List posted on Funeralocity.com;
  • List the name of the Funeral Director in Full and Continuous Charge (“FDFCC”) on the funeral home’s profile on Funeralocity.com
  • Provide to Funeralocity.com families a complete and clear itemized list of charges for services, facilities, equipment, merchandise607 and cash advanced items, and agree not to make any additional charges without their approval
  • Inform Funeralocity.com within thirty (30) days of any action taken against the funeral home(s) or funeral home director(s) by any governmental or regulatory agencies
  • Report any changes in license status to Funeralocity.com at funeralhomes@Funeralocity.com within ten (10) days of said change

Funeral homes and cremation providers that meet the site’s criteria and take the pledge are able to feature more detailed service information as well as reviews, photos, videos and testimonials on Funeralocity.com.

The app teaching anorexics to eat

More patients go into long-term remission by re-learning how to eat,
than through CBT or drugs

The Mandometer app connects to a weighing scale, and guides patients’ eating behavior by providing visual feedback. Redistributed under CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 from J Vis Exp. 2018; (135): 57432.

Swedish scientists say that eating disorders should be considered just that – eating disorders, rather than mental disorders. The proof, they say, is in the eating.

“Anorexic patients can learn to eat at a normal rate by adjusting food intake to feedback from a smartphone app,” says Per Södersten, Professor at the Karolinska Institute and lead author of an article in Frontiers in Neuroscience defending his pioneering method. “And in contrast to failing standard treatments, most regain a normal body weight, their health improves, and few relapse.”

The approach is based on the theory that slow eating and excessive physical exertion, both hallmarks of anorexia, are evolutionarily conserved responses to short food supply that can be triggered by dieting – and reversed by practicing normal eating.

Which came first: the diet or the anorexia?

Attempts to treat anorexia as a mental illness have largely failed, claim the authors.

“The standard treatment worldwide, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), targets cognitive processes thought to maintain the disorder,” explains Södersten. “The rate of remission from eating disorders is at most 25% one year after CBT, with unknown outcomes in the long-term. Psychoactive drugs have proven even less effective.”

Instead, they say, we need to flip our perspective: to target eating behaviors that maintain dysfunctional cognitive processes.

“This new perspective is not so new: nearly 40 years ago, it was realized that the conspicuous high physical activity of anorexia is a normal, evolutionarily conserved response – i.e., foraging for food when it is in short supply – that can be triggered dietary restriction.

“In striking similarity to human anorexics, rats and mice given food only once a day begin to increase their running activity and decrease their food intake further to the point at which they lose a great deal of body weight and can eventually die.”

More recently, the theory has been elaborated and validated by studies of brain function.

“We find that chemical signaling in the starved brain supports the search for food, rather than eating itself,” reports Södersten.

How to eat

To prove that the evolutionary perspective works in practice, Södersten and his team have put their money where their (patient’s) mouth is. Their private clinics – which reinvest 100% of profits into research and development – are now the largest provider of eating disorders services in Sweden.

“We first proposed teaching anorexics to eat back in 1996. At the time, it was thought that this was misplaced and even dangerous; today, no-one can treat patients with eating disorders in the Region of Stockholm without a program for restoring their eating behavior.”

At the Mandometer clinics, the control of eating behavior is outsourced to a machine that provides feedback on how quickly to eat.

“Subjects eat food from a plate that sits on a scale connected to their smartphone. The scale records the weight loss of the plate during the meal, and via an app creates a curve of food intake, meal duration and rate of eating,” explains Södersten. “At regular intervals, a rating scale appears on the screen and the subject is asked to rate their feeling of fullness.”

“A reference curve for eating rate and a reference curve for the feeling of fullness are also displayed on the screen of the smartphone. The subject can thus adapt their own curves in real time to the reference curves, which are based on eating behavior recorded in healthy controls.”

Through this feedback, patients learn to visualize what normal portions of food look like and how to eat at a normal rate.

Satisfying results

The method has now been used to treat over 1500 patients to remission by practicing eating.

“The rate of remission is 75% in on average one year of treatment, the rate of relapse is 10% over five years of follow-up and no patient has died.”

This appears to be a vast improvement compared to the current best standard treatment of CBT. All the more so, considering that overall Södersten’s patients started off sicker than average.

“The difference in outcome is so big that, according to our medical statistician, a randomized control trial [RCT] is now redundant. Nevertheless, we invite a head-to-head RCT by independent researchers – so far, there are no takers.”

How Big Tech Is Destroying Our Press

Ahead of today’s House Judiciary Hearing, the Save Journalism Project held a press call with Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11); journalists Laura Bassett, laid off by HuffPost; and John Stanton, laid off by BuzzFeed; and Neil Chase, CEO of CalMatters and former executive editor of The Mercury News and East Bay Times.

The monopolistic power of big tech companies like Google, Facebook, and Apple is destroying the economic model of the entire journalism industry, whether its traditional circulation newspapers or digital news outlet.

This week’s hearing on how digital platforms affect news organizations marks the much-needed return of congressional antitrust scrutiny to big tech companies, which have gained a monopolistic position that lets them dominate the digital advertising marketplace and distribute massive amounts of content from news publishers on their platforms without paying to produce the content.

Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) said, “I don’t think there’s anything more important right now than this issue. Being from the Bay Area, I have been to every big tech company. After meeting with them, I think it’s time to make it easier for licensing like the music and movie industries have done. We are members of Congress, you are journalists, and we have to keep an appropriate Constitutional distance, but there are policy proposals in our legislation that protect the freedom of the press and are necessary to keep the industry alive. When I was first elected to the Concord City Council there was a reporter who was consistently in the front row keeping officials accountable. His presence made local government work, and it is vital that we protect the journalism industry to make sure leaders are kept accountable and communities are informed.”

Laura Bassett, a reporter who was laid off by HuffPost, commented, “In the first few months of 2019, I was one of about 2,400 journalists and media staffers who lost our jobs. Even though I was aware the cuts were coming, it was still shocking to be laid off after nearly a decade in my newsroom. The reason for the mass layoffs, I found out, was that Big Tech companies like Google and Facebook are dominating the digital ad market, swallowing about 60 percent of all revenue and making it difficult for journalism to survive. News publishers are being forced to give a cut of their ad revenue to these companies- revenue that would otherwise go to hiring journalists. Because a well-funded news media is vital to a healthy democracy, the public needs to be aware of Big Tech’s death grip on publishers. At the House Judiciary Hearing today, lawmakers in Congress need to address this bipartisan issue and find legislative solutions that regulate tech giants and restore fairness to the digital ad market. Journalists are taught not to be the story, but as Big Tech’s digital ad monopoly benefits off of our revenue streams, it’s incumbent upon us to fight for the future of our industry. One or two companies should not have the power to cripple the free press.”

“After 20 years of covering Congress and the White House for BuzzFeed, I found out layoffs were coming in a tweet from the Wall Street Journal,” said John Stanton, former Buzzfeed Washington Bureau Chief before being laid off. “Despite the great work my colleagues and I were doing for the publication, there simply wasn’t enough money. Because stories that lead to changes in state and federal law, jailing of criminals and exposing wrongdoing — cost money. Money that is increasingly gobbled up by Google and Facebook. To try to survive, slashes had to be made. To entire desks. The reason advertising revenue has fallen so steeply is that Google and Facebook dominate the digital ad market, consuming more than 60 percent of all revenue. And their share is growing, because they devour nine out of every ten new dollars that are spent on digital advertising. Big Tech’s monopoly has a death grip on publishers. Congress needs to be discussing how to regulate this imbalance and restore competitive fairness in the digital market.”

Neil Chase, CEO of CalMatters and former executive editor of The Mercury News and East Bay Times, added, “We all believe journalism is central to democracy. Newspapers have experienced a decline not in the past five years, not in the past ten or fifteen years, but in the past seventy-five years. Newspapers have been declining since World War II. The problem is that we are essentially sitting on a 200 year-old product, but are trying to compete with new and changing technologies. Newspapers have maintained a monopoly for over 200 years. This is how people historically gained all their information; how they found where to buy clothing, where to buy their groceries, and where they got their news. With the change in how society works, all we have is the news. In order to solve this problem, we need a multi-pronged approach. We need to engage in philanthropy, which my company is already focused on this aspect. We need newspapers with benevolent leaders, not the leaders that we have at some major news organizations now. We need support from legislators. And, we need people paying for the news. We need a lot of support from a lot of different places in order to make this work.”

Who is Tyler Jacob?
East coast born and bred, Tyler Jacob is a singer/songwriter who got his start in the industry after being discovered singing on the trains of NYC. At the age of 5 years old, Tyler Jacob started singing and performing in school plays. Tyler says that “I’ve always wanted to sing. It was a natural thing for me.” His family recalls little Tyler putting on shows in the family living room. “I don’t come from a family of singers. I’m the only one.” But it wasn’t until his freshmen year in high school did he realize others thought he had a gift when he was accidentally placed in a choir class. “The choir teacher asked me to sing, so she could classify my voice.” The rest is history. After the choir teacher heard Tyler’s voice, she had him transferred to Creative Arts High School (CAHS) in Camden, New Jersey. Tyler’s passion to sing, write and perform his own music, in English and Spanish, pushed him after he graduated from CAHS to move to the Big Apple to pursue his singing career.
