The Harvey Awards Announces Inductees

The Harvey Awards today revealed the inductees to its Hall of Fame and recipients of the International Spotlight Award and Comics Industry Pioneer honor in advance of its 30th anniversary ceremony during New York Comic Con on Friday, October 5. The inductees into the Hall of Fame will be Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) and Roz Chast (The New Yorker). Harold Sakuishi (BECK) will receive the International Spotlight Award. The event also marks the debut of the Comics Industry Pioneer honor, which will be presented to http://www.sdcomicfest.org/jackie-estrada/.

For legendary comic book artist Dave Gibbons, his career comes full circle with this Hall of Fame award. Thirty years ago, during the first Harvey Awards in 1988, he won a number of awards for his work with Alan Moore on what has now become one of the most acclaimed and honored titles in the history of comics — Watchmen. Gibbons has worked on numerous titles for U.K. and U.S. publishers, including Give Me Liberty, a collaboration with Frank Miller, and Kingsman, which he co-created with Mark Millar and which was adapted into a film franchise.

Since 1978, Roz Chast and her work for The New Yorker have been an essential part of the American humor landscape. Many of her 800-plus cartoons are among the magazine’s most memorable. She is a recipient of the Reuben Award, the highest honor in the cartooning profession, from the National Cartoonists Society. Chast’s 2014 graphic memoir, Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?, won a National Book Critics Circle Award and was shortlisted for a National Book Award.

Manga artist Harold Sakuishi, recipient of the International Spotlight Award, has published several award-winning works in his native Japan, but will probably forever be entwined with his groundbreaking marriage of manga and indie rock, BECK, which is currently being published in its entirety in English for the first time by Kodansha Comics and comiXology Originals. This is a rare stateside appearance by the manga legend.

Jackie Estrada will receive the inaugural Comics Industry Pioneer honor, which is given to industry professionals who have made significant contributions toward and shown continuing dedication to the advancement of sequential art. She is being honored for her promotion of comics and their creators through her various roles at San Diego Comic-Con over the past five decades, her books of photographs featuring comics creators, her involvement in Friends of Lulu, and her administration of the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards since 1990.

The Harvey Awards honors achievement in comic books across a variety of categories and represents one of the industry’s longest-running annual events. Named after Harvey Kurtzman, the late cartooning genius who is best remembered for creating MAD, this year the Harveys return to the birthplace of comics and the lifelong home of Kurtzman himself: New York City. ReedPOP, the world’s leading producer of pop culture events, will host the 2018 Harvey Awards on Friday, October 5, at Shop Studios.

The Harvey Awards Steering Committee is co-chaired by Nellie Kurtzman, John Lind, and Chip Mosher.

Stockwomann Gender-Neutral Store Floor

Known for its bold campaigns, such as changing its name to Stockwomann in celebration of International Women’s Day, the department store is now launching a gender-neutral shopping floor – located physically between men’s and women’s, on the 1.5 floor.

The floor features well-known brands such as Acne Studios, Calvin Klein and Marimekko, that have previously incorporated unisex styles in their collections. Fashionistas all over the world are exploring the possibilities of creating a bespoke style by combining items from renowned fashion houses, such as Burberry and Kenzo, and buying liberally from both departments.

The name of the shopping floor concept, One Way, speaks for itself. There is only one way in style; your own. With One Way, Stockmann wants to question old-fashioned norms and limits when it comes to dressing.

“Department stores, especially, tend to stick with outdated norms when it comes to how they allocate their offering under different departments. At the same time consumers are already buying quite liberally from both departments.”, says Laura Paikkari, Creative Director, TBWA\Helsinki.

“We believe that men’s and women’s departments should function as guidelines to finding the clothes that best fit your shape and style rather than definite rules to follow”, says Anna Salmi, CCO at Stockmann.

“With One Way we wanted to style and curate a selection of clothes that might not be designed ‘unisex’ but that work perfectly for all people. Our aim is to inspire our customers to forget the rules and shop unbiasedly,” Salmi adds.

“This is definitely a statement for equality. And brands that take a stand for what they believe in are the ones who shape the future.” Paikkari finishes.

As fashion month begins this week, it remains to be seen whether gender-neutrality will become the dominating trend this fall.

Grand Hotel Golf Resort x Spa

Autograph Collection Hotels, part of Marriott International, Inc., together with the Resort Collection on Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail today announced the rebranding of the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa, an iconic Southern resort in Point Clear, Alabama. The Grand Hotel joins the brand’s diverse portfolio of more than 150 one-of-a-kind hotels that champion visionary owners, thoughtful design and craft.

First opened in 1847, the Grand Hotel has been known as the Queen of Southern Resorts for generations. The charming, 405-room resort is known for exceptional service, Southern charm, majestic oaks and beautiful sunsets over Mobile Bay. During the three-year renovation, the resort’s guest rooms, meeting space, restaurants, spa, golf, pier, pools and grounds were transformed.

Part of the Resort Collection on Alabama’s Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, the Grand Hotel has been praised by group and leisure publications. “With this stunning transformation nearly complete, the historic Grand Hotel enters its next chapter with its Autograph Collection distinction,” said Tony Davis, president of the RTJ Resort Collection. “We are debuting a modern sanctuary of golf, tennis, beach, pools and spa filled with gracious Southern charm and attentiveness. Here, as it has for over 170 years, the Grand Life beckons with hospitality and warmth flowing through the resort in cheerful abundance,” said Davis. “With our Historic Hotels of America designation, the affiliation with the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail and Autograph Collection signature, the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa will appeal even more to group and leisure guests.

Owned by the Retirement Systems of Alabama, the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa transformation was designed by Goodwyn Mills & Cawood and implemented by JESCO Construction, both Alabama companies. The Grand’s transformation blends the best of the resort’s Southern charm and traditions with the modern amenities and technology today’s guests demand. The resort’s iconic fireplace lobby, live oaks and Bucky’s Lounge remain while new cabanas, splash pad and restaurants were added. The design mix honors the Grand’s history, traditions and sense of place.

Designed as an all-in-one destination, the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa features a full-service spa, two RTJ Golf Trail courses, seven restaurants and lounges, two beaches, multiple pools and 37,000 square feet of renovated meeting space on 550 lush acres along Mobile Bay near Fairhope, Alabama. The Grand’s cannon firing each afternoon honors the resort’s history and salutes past and present military.

The Score Return with New Single “Stronger”

Rounding out a breakout, LA rock band The Score–Eddie Anthony and Edan Dover–unveil their new single “Stronger” via Republic Records. Get it here!

The Score siphoned a spirit of urgency into this forthcoming body of work. Inspired by rap-adjacent artists a la Post Malone and K. Flay, they amassed a growing arsenal of analog synths to “get away from the riff-based and stomp-clap organic drum sound and move to an evolving sound where the drum machines, synthesizers, and guitars worked together.”

Writing at a Hollywood and Vine spot, they joined forces with a bevy of high-profile collaborators, JT Daly, The Heavy, Adam Hawkins, and Dave Bassett and shocked that vision to life.

The song comes right in the middle of their Revolution Tour where they’ll be making stops are Brooklyn’s Rough Trade on September 25th and Los Angeles’ The Moroccan Lounge on October 18th, See full tour dates here.

The band stands out as a fiery genre-defying phenomenon, incinerating the lines between rock, pop, indie, and electronic. Powered by ubiquitous anthems such as “Oh My Love,” “Legend,” and “Unstoppable,” the boys racked up 600 million cumulative streams within three years’ time over the course of two EPs–Unstoppable and Myths & Legends.

As they ignited venues across North America, in addition their music has been used in campaigns for Jeep, NBA, and beyond.

Lenny Kravitz New Album ‘Raise Vibration’

Lenny Kravitz releases his eleventh studio album Raise Vibration.

His new song elevates the union of rock and roll, funk, blues, and soul. Receptive to youthful inspiration, but enlightened by three decades of wisdom, it represents a powerful creative rebirth and a bold, bright, and brilliant body of work-befitting of his legacy and boundless spirit.

Previously released off of this album, Kravitz debut track It’s Enough stands out as one of the most powerful compositions in his catalog and is a tense, decisive rumination on the global sate of affairs today. His single Low is a pulsating introspective composition dealing with the issue of preconceptions in the beginning of a relationship. It is a funky cinematic groove layered with horns, strings, and multi-layered vocals with help from the late great Michael Jackson.

In conjunction with the release of his album, Kravitz will kick off the third leg of his 2018 world tour, which kicked off in Mexico, then into Europe he played a series of arena and stadium shows. The U.S. leg will begin in Atlanta, GA. Tickets are on sale now and additional information can be found here.

Introducing Debut Artist No/Me + New Single “Consistent” Out Now

Just recently, Los Angeles-based vocalist and songwriter, No/Me, shares her debut single “Consistent” vie Republic Recores–listen to it here!

On “Consistent,” No/Me lists off her flaws: a skeptic, a cynic, neurotic, and narcissistic–a freak who’s “got the best intentions,” but tends to “fuck them up.”

The moody and mesmerizing track comes to life with each confession delivered in her hypnotic vocals.

“‘Consistent’ feels like a page from my journal. Writing this song made me embrace parts of myself that were hard to face, but it also helped me stop curating the facade that people would prefer to see,” says No/Me.

The L.A. native’s sound is a blend of her electric influences, from early 90’s alt-rock to the quirky anti-folk of Regina Spektor to Israeli music. With Hebrew as her first language, her lyrics reveal a raw but poetic sensibility closely shaped by her upbringing.

Having a deep-rooted mission to use her music as a vehicle for positive change, No/Me’s stage name is her Hebrew name and meant to signify the transparent nature of her songwriting. She aims to spark that change on the most personal level. “Consistent” sets the stage for more new music from No/Me in 2018.
