The leading cause of death for teens 15–18 years old in the U.S. is motor vehicle crashes¹. With today’s advanced technology, parents now have more access to safety features that help combat the most common dangers for teen drivers, which include not wearing seat belts, distracted driving and speeding. The experts at Cars.com^TM assembled recommendations for the best vehicle technology and top cars for new teen drivers for National Teen Driver Safety Week, Oct. 20-26.

The experts at Cars.com identified the best new cars for teen drivers based on available in-car technology, affordability and safety scores²:

2019 Hyundai Kona SEL SUV has stellar crash-test scores and is equipped with the SmartSense safety suite, which bundles forward collision warning with emergency braking, lane keep assist and driver attention warning systems. Starting price: $22,895
2019 Kia Forte EX (with Launch Edition Package) is a compact sedan that impresses on many levels, with a sporty design, a more refined interior and features such as forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot collision warning, lane keep assist and more. Starting price: $26,125
2019 Mazda3 (front-wheel drive with Select Package) is a compact sedan equipped with Mazda’s i-ActivSense safety system, which adds emergency braking, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning and lane keep assist, and driver attention alert. Honorable mention: 2020 Nissan Versa SV³is an affordable subcompact with safety features including front automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, automatic reverse braking, a lane departure warning system, blind spot warning, automatic headlights and high beams. “Each year, automakers are adding more safety features to new models, giving today’s parents better access to advanced technology to help their teens avoid potentially fatal errors,” said Newman. She advises parents to look out for the following safety tech features as they shop for their new teen driver:

Forward collision warningmonitors a vehicle’s speed, the speed of the car in front of it and the distance between vehicles. If the vehicles get too close, this technology will warn the teen driver to slow down and move to a safe distance between vehicles.
Automatic emergency brakingsystems detect an impending forward crash and alert teen drivers to take action. If the driver doesn’t respond, the system automatically applies the brakes. This technology is critical in avoiding a forward crash and reducing the severity of an impending collision.
Apple CarPlay and Android Autoconnect smartphones to the car’s infotainment system. This feature allows teens to use some features from their smartphone but still limit their distractions while driving.
Lane keep assist and lane departure warningsystems alert teenage drivers when the vehicle begins to move out of its lane. For teens still learning how to navigate the dimensions of a car, these features will help keep them from drifting into other lanes or alert them when they do.
Rear cross-traffic alertdetects cars passing behind a vehicle when backing up. For teens learning to drive, backing up is one of the most challenging tasks. This technology allows them to back out of parking spaces more safely.
Blind spot warning systemssense other vehicles located in the driver’s blind spots. For teen drivers, learning a vehicle’s blind spots and how to check for other vehicles properly takes time; this can help them learn that skill.
Ford’s MyKey and Chevrolet’s Teen Drivermodes allow parents to control vehicle safety settings such as speed, radio volume or seat belt alerts. For teen drivers, this feature reduces distracted driving, speeding and ensures they are safely buckled in.

Multi-platinum Grammy, Juno and Polaris Prize nominated singer/songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen today releases a unique version of fan favorite track “The Sound”, from her recent fourth album, Dedicated, via Schoolboy/Interscope Records.
Recorded and filmed live in Lapland, Finland – with the support of House of Lapland, Finnair and Visit Finland – “The Sound (Live in Lapland, Finland)” sees Carly and her band strip back the song’s more electronic elements and replace them with organic, more tranquil, instrumentation. In what is a rare moment for an artist, both audio and video were recorded fully outdoors – and the accompanying performance video captures the picturesque setting of the record, on a remote lakeside jetty in Lapland’s Ruka-Kuusamo region.

SHEPPARD RELEASES ALBUM

Australian hitmakers Sheppard have had a whirlwind 12 months – after releasing their #1 ARIA sophomore album Watching the Sky (June 2018 via ), the band – Amy, George, and Emma Sheppard along with Jay Bovino – went on to perform shows all over the globe, appear as an Australian finalist in the Eurovision song competition, and spark a global body positivity movement with #kissmyfatass this summer. In late February, the band took a break from performing after George was diagnosed with a throat injury. After spending months on vocal rest, it became clear that he required surgery, which he underwent in September. The forced rest and songwriting sessions led him to consider what kind of artist he was outside of Sheppard, culminating in a two-week long silent retreat in the mountains. At the same time, Amy was igniting an important conversation about body shaming and beauty standards with the global #kissmyfatass campaign.

“We began to ask what we wanted next, for ourselves individually, for the band and for our fans. We wrote ‘Die Young’ as though it was a ‘final’ Sheppard song; a song about appreciating each day and living it as though it was your last,” George says. In the midst of this introspection, the band’s core team of Amy, George and Jay came together again to record “Kiss My Fat Ass,” a chance for the trio to reconnect creatively after many months.

“When Jay, Amy and I finally got back into the studio to record ‘Kiss My Fat Ass,’ it was such a fun new sound for us and the three of us worked great together,” said George. “It was clear each of us had been on our own individual journeys of reflection and growth. It reminded me of the early days of writing for the first album and how much fun it was to rediscover ourselves musically.”

Together, the band realized that far from being an artistic shackle, Sheppard was a vehicle of creative energy and foundation for each of their individual pursuits. “Die Young” sees Sheppard in top form – lush production, full vocal harmonies, and an existential optimism parallel with the band’s own journey throughout the last year.

Held at Haven’s Kitchen in Chelsea, 360 MAGAZINE experienced a foodie’s dream come true at “Mastering the Art of Flavor” culinary event. Six ordinary recipes transformed featuring distinguished flavors of Holland House and NAKANO. Hosted by MasterChef finalist Cate Meade, registered dietician Mia Syn as well as food stylist Jessica Formicola.

They shared incredible resources and recipes in preparation for the holiday season. Cooking tips on how we can remain calm and stress free in the kitchen. Take it from Chef Cate, “Prep and prepare” is the ingredient to a five-star meal.

As the spokeswomen for Holland House, Cate shared her three Holiday stress-free recipes developed with cooking wine. For starters, the Spinach Feta and Artichoke Dip is the perfect dish for hosting where guests can gather and enjoy. A 1/2 cup of Holland House White cooking wine comes together for a robust bold flavor in every bite. Served best with vegetable crudité, baked pita chips and/or crackers.

The Sherry Cherry Pork Loin Roast was Cate’s showstopping dish, demonstrating that a slow cooker is an essential kitchen appliance. Cooked to perfection, the sweet but savory taste served with Sherry Cherry sauce complemented the tender meat. Layered with braised onions and roasted vegetables for hearty appetites.

Beyond her ‘easy bake oven’ years, Cate’s Flourless Chocolate Cake is a healthier option for dessert without sacrificing taste. Holland House Red cooking wine with macerated strawberries emerged in red wine added depth to the cake’s moisture. Garnished with sifted powdered sugar or cocoa powder for a sweet dusting.

Post holiday season we all desire healthier behaviors to impact our lifestyles. Mia Syn, RDN shared “Healthy Habits for the New Year.” Her recipes were inspired by Nakano, a gluten-free seasoned rice vinegar. It’s sweet light flavor dresses up any dish from salads to pasta.

Each recipe takes no more than 15 minutes to prepare. Her first recipe Chopped Chinese Chicken Salad with Sesame Dressing is light but filling. NAKANO Toasted Sesame Rice vinegar poured over salad ingredients and thinly sliced chicken breasts.

Mia’s meals include a rainbow of vegetables which are packed with nutrients. A sheet pan required with a simple toss in the oven. My favorite, the low-carb Teriyaki Chicken breasts. Bite-sized morsels surrounded with veggies and peppers cut into small florets. Drizzle NAKANO Rice Vinegar with teriyaki sauce on top and bake for 7 minutes.

Cauliflower Fried Rice is the best substitute for a starchy option; including peas, carrots, cabbage with an egg.

Jessica Formicola hosted a food styling lesson filled with tips and tricks to wow your guests and get the most social engagement through your content. Her most vital and resourceful tip is to “use what you have on hand” to elevate any five-star dish. Be sure to include the real ingredients in your dish for a relatable and approachable take.
