SEN. ELIZABETH WARREN: ESSENCE.COM OP-ED

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) pens an exclusive op-ed for ESSENCE.com entitled, Closing the School-to-Prison Pipeline for Good. In this piece, she talks about the threat that young students of color face every day, rethinking the approach to public education and public safety and more. She states:

“In the 1990’s, hundreds of police officers were deployed to public schools across the country as a component of the war on drugs and later in response to school shootings. Today, at least fourteen million students attend schools staffed with a police officer — but without a single counselor, social worker, psychologist, or nurse.

The result is that in many cases, an infraction as simple as back talking or skipping class that should end in detention or administrative intervention can end in arrest. Over the years, the implementation of policies from Zero-Tolerance to surveillance to criminalizing lateness and absenteeism have created a system of loopholes that trap our most vulnerable students in a pipeline kept alive by the for-profit prison system. It’s a system that disproportionately hurts black and brown students and undermines their learning…As President, I will work to close the school to prison pipeline, by rethinking our approach to public education and public safety…”

In addition, she reflects on her recently revealed plan to invest $800 billion in public schools and how she would invest “an additional $100 billion in ‘Excellence Grants’—that’s equivalent to $1 million for every public school in the country—to invest in things like after school arts programs and school-based student mentoring programs…” This would be in an overall effort toreduce the impact of systemic racial and economic disadvantage on students.

HRE WHEELS

UNVEILS NEW FLAGSHIP TWO-PIECE FORGED WHEEL SERIES S1SC

The new Series S1SC line features stronger and lighter two-piece forged wheels utilizing proprietary forged rim barrels.

HRE Performance Wheels, a company known for making wheels with the utmost style, quality and exclusivity, has added a major product platform to its forged wheel lines with the introduction of the Series S1SC two-piece wheels. The Series S1SC is the first two-piece forged wheel line from HRE and offers greater stiffness, reduced mass, higher concentricity and eliminates the air seal required of traditional three-piece wheels.

The S1SC is the first wheel line to utilize HRE’s new proprietary one-piece forged barrel, named FMR™ (Forged Monoblok Rim). The S1SC wheels feature aggressive styling similar to the Monoblok P1SC and employ multiple technical design features for increased stiffness and reduced mass. In typical HRE fashion, particular attention was paid to spoke details, including intersection points and the fastener flange surfacing. The S1SC FMR™ barrel is launching with a clean contemporary profile, but the design and forged/machined construction methodology allow for future variations incorporating other styles such as vintage J-style flange lips.

“HRE is focusing a lot on advanced materials and technology at the moment, but we are also always looking at ways to improve our core forged products,” said HRE President and CEO, Alan Peltier. “This new two-piece forged wheel platform allows us to offer the modular styling of a traditional 3-piece wheel, while improving performance and quality across every metric, and the Series S1SC is only the first of many new forged wheel series that will incorporate the new FMR™ barrel.”

The Series S1SC wheels feature four different styles including a mesh wheel (S101SC), V-spoke (S104SC), split five-spoke (S107SC) and Y-spoke phone dial (S111SC). The Series S1SC initially will be available in limited fitments for 20-inch and 21-inch diameters for high performance cars, followed by additional designs, diameters and applications in the near future.

HRE Series S1SC wheels are available for order now at www.HREWheels.com and at authorized HRE dealers. First deliveries will start in Q1 of 2020.

Capturing the Best Memories: 9 Wedding Photography Tips for Brides and Grooms

With all the planning that goes into your wedding, the actual day often goes by in a flash. The best way to remember it all? Photographs. Getting the perfect photos can feel like a hugely important thing, as they capture all the wonderful elements and details of the big day, and the emotion on everyone’s faces. They are a keepsake you will treasure and something for everyone to look back on. So how do you make sure your photography is done perfectly? Here are a few tips to get the best shots of your big day:

Find the Right Photographer

Possibly the most obvious in this list, finding the right photographer will guarantee you get the lovely photos you want. Any photographer should be skilled and understand what it takes to get good shots, but like all creative jobs, different people create different things. You should look thoroughly at their portfolio to see what kind of style they have and think about the kind of photos you are looking for. You should also look through other people’s wedding photos to see how differently their days have been captured; if there is a particular set of photos you love, you could even hire the same photographer. Go with what speaks to you.

Relax

For some people, being in front of the camera is intimidating and uncomfortable. It can seem unnatural to pose in front of a camera, but you will have to do your best on the day. Some photographers are good at taking photos unnoticed, so you will most likely appear natural in the shots anyway, as you might not even notice your picture being taken. When it comes to getting photos lined up with your friends and family, or side by side with your partner, you might start to feel more pressure. The best thing to do is to focus on your partner and your emotions. Try not to force yourself to pose if it doesn’t come naturally to you. Just pay attention to your partner and you will end up smiling naturally. If you are nervous about it, there are some useful guides on how to pose ‘naturally’ so you can practice a little before the day. Your photographer will probably provide you with some direction too, so once again, try your best to relax.

Plan Ahead

It’s a really good idea to have another visit to your venue and taking your photographer along is even better, as it will give you a chance to take a second look at the space before the big day. You can think more carefully about where your décor will be going, and you can communicate with your photographer about where the best photos can be taken. Remember that lighting changes quite dramatically between day and evening, so you will also have to make sure you plan the timing well. Some people even get their photos taken before the ceremony, to guarantee perfect couple-shots.

Photo Opportunities

Getting the photos that you want may also mean choosing the right venue. If you know you want photos with a natural backdrop, you need a venue that has gardens. If you want a city backdrop, then you need an inner-city venue. You are sure to get beautiful wedding photos at NYC’s Tribeca roof if a backdrop of the city is what you want. When picking your venue, make sure you consider the potential for great photography. Having great views in the background will make your photos even more special.

Bring Props and Get Creative

If you know you want to have some more playful shots, plan ahead and bring along items you may want in your photos. If your partner is an avid cyclist, perhaps you could get a fun shot of you both on a bike? Once again, think carefully and discuss these ideas with your photographer. There will already be lots of great photo opportunities within your venue with all the décor and things going on, but it doesn’t hurt to prepare some extra scene-setting extras too.

Photo Booth

Some people like to set up a makeshift photo-booth or space where your guests can take silly or fun shots together, which will add another set of photos into your album. It’s a good idea to get some extra photos taken from the perspective of your friends and family, and they can be included in the guestbook as a personal touch. Leaving a polaroid camera by the guestbook will give your guests a chance to take a fun snap to go with their messages.

Enlist Family and Friends

Another idea is to give a camera to each of the bride or groom’s parties, to document the ‘getting ready’ process. Try not to rely on one specific person, as this will put pressure on them to work rather than enjoy the day. But having cameras available lets people have fun and get involved, some of your friends and family members may love having an opportunity to pick up the camera and take their own shots.

Sharing Photos

Setting up a space for all the photos your guests do take makes it easier to collate them all together. You should try setting up an online place using a sharing platform such as Dropbox or Google Drive. This will allow people to upload their photographs and videos into one album and it can be viewed by everyone. It will mean you get to see everything from the day, and no photos get lost or disappear.

Keepsakes

The photos you have from your big day will be super special and a great way to keep them together is by creating an album. There are some great companies that can print your photos into a photo-book or album so that you can flip through your favorite shots. They would also make a lovely gift to parents if you think that’s something they would appreciate. Getting a book or film made from your photos from the day could also be something your photographer offers, so make sure to ask them about this. They may be able to recommend their favorite companies too.

Any photos that are taken of your big day will be special, but these tips should help you make sure you get those perfect pictures worth framing. With the day being so busy, you may not even get the chance to take everything in, so having those photos to look back at is such an important and meaningful thing. With all of these things taken care of, you can just enjoy your day and trust that your photos will turn out beautifully.

LEXUS GS F

“The Lexus GS F is undeniably one of the most iconic vehicles of the brand’s history! Like a reserved bottle of wine, it ages well.” – 360 MAGAZINE

By Anthony Sovinsky × Vaughn Lowery

The ‘F’ marquee represents the high performance division of vehicles engineered by Lexus. The 2019 Lexus GS F has earned its right through rigorous testing to bear the weight of the ‘F’ stamp of approval. It’s graceful design and superior performance are on par with the BMW M Models and Mercedes-AMG line.

Design

The GS F is only in its third season, yet it’s overall traits are retro while still embodying Lexus’s luxurious appeal. The side profiles are simple – no excess vents or useless lines. At the front, there’s a gradual growth in aggressiveness which begins with fender cut-outs. The spindle grille is accompanied by two massive air ducts which lie beneath each Triple Beam LED headlamps. It has been masterfully carved to enhance aerodynamics with a 0.33 drag coefficient. The buttocks is the defining attribute on this sports sedan – clearly this car can deep squat. Reminiscent of its predecessors, however, this model has chrome quad exhaust pipes (diagonally stacked upon one another).

Our test model came well-equipped with the 10th Anniversary Package for an additional $5000 USD. It has several unique style upgrades inside and out. Only 100 units were produced in the United States. Exterior refinements include a matte Nebula Gray paint and 19” contrasting BBS 16-spoke wheels. Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires come standard along side of painted blue Brembo calipers and ‘F’ logo puddle lights.

Up front are a 16-way power adjustable driver and a 5-way adjustable passenger ‘F’ performance race-inspired seats. They encase passengers comfortably and firmly. An ‘F’ Sport steering wheel with racing ergonomics elegantly compliment the cabin. There’s electric blue carbon fiber along the door panels and dash coupled with alcantara door trim and armrest. Futhermore, there’s a F 10th Anniversary Limited medallion affixed just right above the blue shift knob.

Performance

Unlike its competition, commonly turbocharging and supercharging their vehicles to boast extra power, Lexus decided to implant a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 in the GS. It outputs 467 hp and 389 lb-ft of torque. Although it’s not outpowering it’s German counterparts, it offers a nostalgic feel with balanced performance and predictability. Its force is distributed through an 8-speed automatic transmission that is best experienced in SportS+ mode. One should take advantage of the paddle shifters and row the gears through their more spirited ranges, 4800 RPM and above.

This car exemplifies it’s athletic prowess on roads which test it’s balance. And, for those of us who don’t have access to a track, windy roads will serve. We drove through LA’s Mulholland Drive to PCH for a Sunday morning jaunt to Carr Winery in Santa Barbara for a tasting. Much to our surprise, the husky 4-door held its ground. The tires stuck around corners with great tenacity and body roll was almost absent. Moreover, the ventilated disc brakes with high friction pads were of great help in approaching turns. In gain, F Sport suspension with Ilachs-sourced shock absorbers kept the ride firm with little rebound in both Track and SLALOM modes.

Safety

Plenty of features are included to keep drivers as well as passengers safe and sound. Essential characteristics that came in handy are the following: smart stop technology, blind spot monitor with cross traffic alert, all-speed dynamic radar cruise control (for long drives), lane departure alert with steering wheel assist and lane keep assist (are great for driver fatigue). Lastly, Lexus Enform offers assistance if the vehicle is involved in accident or stolen. You can also communicate with an actual representative to send directions straight to the car while in motion. Finally, a car concierge for a sports sedan that confortably seats four.

Technology

As much as we enjoyed listening to the sweet serenade of the exhaust, the audio system is just as satisfying. Our version came with a 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium sound system, with 835 watts of power ($1380 USD). It’s unquestionably one of the most powerful units its segment. In addition, there’s a 12.3-inch infotainment display that can be surfed with an armrest remote. To date, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto are unavailable. However, music can be played from your phone while connected to Bluetooth and/or plugged into the USB port. And, for $900 you can opt for an in color heads-up display (HUD) that offers metrics such as the speed limit, current MPH/KMH and tachometer.

Conclusion

In short, the standard 2019 Lexus GS F is priced at $84,350 and the 10th Anniversary Edition retails around $93,250. For far less than its challengers, the GS F is an exotic with tons of intuitive amenities. A true head-turner and automotive beast.

Ozzy Osbourne

Consequence of Sound and  Sony Music Entertainment  have partnered together for another season of  The Opus, a podcast that explores legendary albums and their ongoing legacy. The fifth season has officially entered the world of Darkness with the Prince himself, Ozzy Osbourne. Host Andy Bothwell, aka Astronautalis, along with a number of musicians, artists, authors, and metal heads, will delve into how his debut solo record Blizzard of Ozz changed Ozzy’s world and continues to impact music today.

After being fired from Black Sabbath in 1979, Osbourne feared his career was over. Blizzard of Ozz changed a genre with hit singles like “Crazy Train” and “Mr. Crowley”, thus shifting the direction of Osbourne’s entire life.

“The Opus is nothing without its legends, and Ozzy Osbourne is certainly one of them. Millions of people from all over the world can recognize the Prince of Darkness, but very few know how truly dark things once were for the rocker,” shares Consequence of Sound’s Editor-in-ChiefMichael Roffman. “Blizzard of Ozz is a redemption story, sure, but it wasn’t an easy one for Ozzy, which is why listeners should find this season of The Opus to be quite exhilarating.”

Guests throughout the season will include Zakk Wylde (Ozzy/Black Label Society), Joseph Schafer (Kerrang, Decibel, NPR), Steve Brodsky (Cave IN/Mutoid Man), Robert Ham (Portland Mercury, Consequence), Phillip Guiry (ex-Minor League Baseball executive), Chuck Klosterman (Fargo Rock City) and Beth Winegarner (author of “The Columbine Effect” and several other books on Heavy Metal and society).

On the new season of The Opus, Bothwell shares “I didn’t grow up on Ozzy, I knew the hits, but I had never gone any deeper than that on Blizzard Of Ozz. But, after researching for this next season of The Opus, I have become a TOTAL fan! I finally understand why metal heads worship this record, and I fully accept and acknowledge Ozzy Osbourne as the Godfather of Metal, and the one true Prince of Darkness!”

Fans can stream the first episode today HERE.

Past seasons of The Opus have explored the ever-evolving legacies of four iconic records: Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks, The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s Electric Ladyland, Jeff Buckley’s Grace and most recently, Willie Nelson’s Red Headed Stranger.

Fans can expect a new album to be explored each month on The Opus. For more information, visit http://consequenceofsound.net/theopus.
