Harvard & Texas A&M

I write to inform you of my dismay over recent actions by Harvard faculty Dr. Walter Willett and Dr. Frank Hu and their associates, Dr. David Katz and the True Health Initiative (THI). Their actions, as
described in a recent JAMA article here
are unethical, distort the results of important scientific research, and, in our opinion, are false and harmful to Texas A&M University and its faculty. These are serious matters that undermine the values espoused by your institution and must be corrected immediately. 

I trust you were as surprised as I was after reading the JAMA article and ask that you take a look at the outrageous actions by THI. JAMA found that THI and several of its council members, including Harvard faculty Dr. Willett and Dr. Hu, mischaracterized scientific research
and falsely accused Texas A&M scientists of selling out to industry interests. According to JAMA, THI not only broke journal embargo policy but apparently used automated bots to flood the email inbox of the Editor in Chief of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Several of your faculty are involved as council members or advisers of THI and collaborated with THI in their effort to discredit scientific evidence that runs contrary to their ideology. I can assure you that Texas A&M’s research is driven by science. Period.

In addition to my concern about JAMA findings, I am attaching an illustration
Dr. Willett presented at a cardiology conference to attack a distinguished Texas A&M professor and the university itself as being influenced by industry. This unsubstantiated claim has been independently rejected and shown to be false in the JAMA article.

At this time, we have no hard basis to show that these actions against Texas A&M and its faculty are endorsed or condoned by your institution, and we hope we can work together to resolve this problem. Such
resolution should include a serious assessment by Harvard of its affiliation with THI and a comprehensive ethical review into any Harvard faculty involved with THI. Several scientists have severed ties with THI because of the issues discussed in this letter. Texas A&M applauds the stand taken by these scientists and encourages Harvard to show the same courage.


Texas A&M asks that Harvard join us for a purely scientific approach to nutrition for the sake of public health and public trust and reject the politics and unethical actions of THI that have sought to discredit science and interfere in the scientific process.

ABOUT BEAU YOUNG PRINCE:

Beau Young Prince, a self-described “Southside kid with a North Side education” bred in urban Southeast DC, attended one of the highest ranked private schools in the Northern part of the city.  “I was given a really unique experience,” he speaks of that duality.  “I have the ability to combine both worlds where most people can’t.”

BYP’s training on classical and jazz upright bass was tempered by an eclectic playlist of sounds at home, from Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield to A Tribe Called Quest and André 3000, from Lenny Kravitz and Bad Brains to DC’s legendary Go-Go scene.  As a teen he hit local talent shows, open mics, and rap battles, even burning CDs that he sold on the street.  A graduate of Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, BYP kept the music going, hitting the Soundcloud wave early on, and performing three years in a row at the SXSW Music Conference.

In 2016, Beau Young Prince grabbed over a million streams with “Half & Half Tea” (Top 50 Viral U.S. Spotify chart, and Spotify Most Necessary playlist), off his critically acclaimed project Until Then, produced by longtime friend, New York City producer Yalamusiq.  A year later, BYP connected with French producer YMNO for the Young Futura project.  BYP’s subsequent release of his Sunset Blvd EP ensured that he was destined for greatness. Def Jam A&R soon caught the vibe as the DC star finally won his seat at the table.

Kennedy airport into the world’s first ever fashion show centered around the globally sustainable supply chain. With an iconic backdrop featuring energy-efficiency fleet of aircraft, helicopter and electric cars, J Winter Fashion Show 2020 will premiere the creative fashion collections from different continents.  The highly-anticipated production follows the international successes of Jessica’s previous Fashion x Sustainability phenomena atop Hoover Dam, at the gemaSOLAR Power Plant, and aboard the Race For Water solar-wind-hydro powered vessel.

Conlangio, free web-based application for constructed languages.

There is often a secret ingredient that draws us into powerful performances on our television, captivates us with storytelling in our favorite books and has us hooked on to the latest video game. That secret ingredient is a constructed language and there is a Denver startup focused on creating a platform for language creators around the world and promoting the art, science, and craft of inventing languages.

That company is Conlangio, an innovative language-construction software company with a free web-based constructed language application. This startup – not even a year old and still in its early phases – already has over 400 language creators and over 400 languages created using their software. It has created quite a buzz in this niche community and is planning to expand to content-creation and educational material in the near future.

The founder of Conlangio, Patrick Gaston, is a classically trained linguist, U.S. Army veteran, and software engineer living in Denver, CO.

“Language is my absolute passion. After getting my degree in Linguistics and becoming a software engineer, I really made it a mission to use this unique skill set to create language applications for underrepresented language communities. I started creating my own language in 2016 as a way to deal with some issues transitioning from military to university so this is where I wanted to start my journey,” says Patrick Gaston

One of the most amazing things about this startup is that it was created on nights and weekends as a side project – and still is!

“I’m kind of just riding this wave right now. Conlangio has definitely grown to a point that makes it hard to do part-time but I am loving every minute of it. This whole journey has already been so surreal and if I get to work on Conlangio full-time, it will be amazing,” says Gaston.

In the past year, Conlangio has grown to a diverse team of 4, including 2 military veterans.

What is a constructed language? 
Constructed languages, or conlangs for short, are languages that have been created artificially, by an individual or a group, with the intent of being used for communication by a group of speakers, to enhance art, entertainment and more.

You may be more familiar than you think! If you’re one of the millions that tuned into HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones, you’ve heard of Dothraki, which is a fictional language constructed by David J. Peterson – an American language creator. That’s not all. Some other places you can find constructed languages are James Cameron’s Avatar, The 100, and the Lord of the Rings to name a few. That list is only getting bigger.

Why create a language?

People create languages for all kinds of reasons, some of these might include own personal use, video games, films or TV shows.

4XFAR FESTIVAL

Land Rover has presented 4xFAR, a weekend festival featuring live performances from some of the music industry’s most celebrated artists, along with culinary and adventure experiences for people with a passion for exploring the unknown. 
 
The festival featured two-days of music from Grammy award-winning producers and today’s biggest artists, including globally-recognised headline Anderson. Paak & The Free Nationals and Mark Ronson & Q-Tip. 

Also taking to the stage over the weekend were urban beatsmith Kaytranada, Sofi Tukker, Young The Giant, Kurt Vile & The Violators, Chappaqua Wrestling, LP Giobbi, Mahalia, Maya Jane Coles and Tijuana Panthers. 

Created to celebrate the new 2020 Land Rover Defender coming to the USA, 4xFAR was created for people with a passion for exploring the unknown and exploring new adventures. The festival allowed visitors the first opportunity to experience the highly anticipated new 2020 Land Rover Defender on a purpose-built off-road course, alongside the full range of current Land Rover vehicles.

The ticket-only event took place at Empire Grand Oasis in the Coachella Valley in Southern California.
