California Poison Control Offers Rattlesnake Bite Prevention Tips

By Dr. Rais Vohra

At California Poison Control System (CPCS), we want to remind residents that with warmer spring weather, rattlesnakes are more likely to be found on hiking trails and sunning in rural areas. Most bites occur between the months of April and October. Even baby rattlesnakes possess dangerous venom as soon as they hatch.

This weekend, we received three calls about rattlesnake bites, a higher number per weekend than usual. About 300 cases are reported to CPCS annually in California, with additional other cases managed by physicians and hospitals.

While the odds of being bitten by a rattlesnake are small compared to other environmental injuries, residents can follow precautions outdoors that can minimize the chance of being bitten. For example, children are naturally curious and may look into open pipes or under rocks, or kick loose brush and bushes where snakes may sometimes lie quietly. Children need to be carefully supervised outside, especially in wooded and desert areas where snakes tend to live.  Rattlesnakes do not always make a rattling sound, so someone can be standing next to a rattlesnake and not even know it.

Some rattlesnake bite prevention tips include:

  • Wear boots and long pants when hiking.
  • Stay on trails when hiking, away from underbrush and tall weeds.
  • Do not touch or disturb a snake, even if it appears dead.
  • Carefully inspect logs or rocks before sitting on them.
  • Never hike alone in remote areas. Always have someone with you who can assist in an emergency. Calling for help if alone is not an option, as cellphones do not always work in remote areas.
  • Teach children to respect snakes and to leave them alone.

The symptoms of a rattlesnake bite may include extreme pain and swelling at the location of the bite; excessive bleeding; nausea; swelling in the mouth and throat making it difficult to breathe; lightheadedness; drooling; and even collapse, shock and death in rare cases.  If you are bitten by a rattlesnake, immediate medical attention is critical. Severe or even life-threatening symptoms may occur within minutes after the bite, or in other cases may begin after couple of hours. In either event, your best bet is to get to a hospital as soon as you can.

The following steps are important for any rattlesnake bite:

  • Get immediate medical attention.
  • Do not apply ice, do not use a tourniquet or constricting band, do not try to suck out the venom, and do not use any device to cut or slice the bite site.
  • Keep calm, do not run and keep the affected extremity elevated during transport to a medical facility.
  • Do not call the local hospitals to see if they have anti-venom, just go ASAP.

By the way, many veterinarians now carry rattlesnake anti-venom and rattlesnake vaccines for dogs and other pets that are bitten. Contact a veterinarian for more information.

Iggy Pop – The Bowie Years

THE IDIOT AND LUST FOR LIFE DELUXE EDITION PLUS 7-CD BOX SET OUT MAY 29th ON UME

“CHINA GIRL” (ALT MIX) UNVEILED TODAY LISTEN HERE

A 7-CD box set ‘The Bowie Years‘ exploring Iggy Pop’s Berlin-era albums is today announced for release on May 29th via UMe. The box set features remastered versions of The IdiotLust For Life, live album TV Eye and rare outtakes, alternate mixes and a 40-page book. Lust For Life and The Idiot will also be released as standalone 2-CD Deluxe Editions with bonus live CDs on the same date. The box set and albums provide a fascinating insight into the unique creative alchemy that defined the mythical Berlin-era of post-punk and set the wheels in motion for a sound that went on to dominate the world, shaping popular culture for decades to come.

Iggy Pop’s The Idiot and Lust For Life remain two of the most influential albums ever made and still stand as towering behemoths in rock’s upper echelons, their sonic DNA and attitude continuing to influence and inspire new generations of artists to this day. Both albums run through the fabric of artists such as Joy Division, Queens Of The Stone Age, IDLES, Fontaines DC, R.E.M., Depeche Mode, N.I.N., Nick Cave, and an ever regenerating crop of new talent.

Unveiled today, the first track to be released from the box set is an alternate mix of “China Girl” – listen here. Originally the second single to be taken from The Idiot in May 1977, this tale of infatuation, often interpreted as an ode to hedonism and Iggy’s former band The Stooges, would go on to become a hit for David Bowie on his Nile Rodgers produced 1983 album Let’s Dance.

Following the demise of Iggy’s seminal proto-punk band The Stooges, and a stint on the road together, Iggy and Bowie moved to West Berlin in 1977 to start work on Iggy’s debut solo album. Inspired by the Cold War-era surroundings, and named after Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel, The Idiot saw Iggy moving away from the guitar-heavy punk of The Stooges (and the ubiquitous sound of the era), bringing electronics textures and brooding darkness to the fore. The album was a critical and commercial success, spawning hits including “China Girl,” “Nightclubbing,” “Funtime” and “Sister Midnight.”

On a creative roll, the duo were back in the studio a matter of weeks after the accompanying tour to promote The Idiot finished, recording Iggy’s sophomore solo album Lust For Life. Bringing a rawer rock’n’roll feel back to the fore, Lust For Life spawned two of Iggy’s biggest hits, the titular track and the anthemic “The Passenger.”

Alongside these two albums, included in the box is a remastered version of the live album TV Eye recorded the 1977 tour in Cleveland, Chicago and Kansas City featuring Bowie on keyboards. There are also three discs of live recordings from March 1977 officially released for the first time – Live at The Rainbow Theatre, London, Live at The Agora, Cleveland and Live at Mantra Studio, Chicago. The set also contains a 40-page booklet with contributions from the musicians who played on the records and famous fans discussing the influence the albums have had on them.

phem × Alison Wonderland

PHEM X ALISON WONDERLAND DROP TIGER KING-INSPIRED NEW SINGLE “W.W.C.B.D.”

LISTEN HERE

Following widespread acclaim from Atwood Magazine and RunTheTrap as well as 20 million-plus streams and counting, alternative pop sorceress phem and Australian superstar Alison Wonderland pose a question that has been on everybody’s mind as of late with their new single “W.W.C.B.D.”–i.e. “wut wud carole baskin do?” Get it HERE via nvr giv up/Caroline. Inspired by the cultural phenomenon and NETFLIX documentary series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, the track fuses echo-y trap beat-craft and electronic transmissions from Wonderland with phem’s ruddy acoustic guitar and hypnotic croon. It closes out on a possible answer to this popular quarantine query as phem strains out the final crescendo, “Feed you to the tigers, but I can’t because this virus got me paralyzed again.” Check out the visualizer HERE. About “W.W.C.B.D.”, phem commented, “During this quarantine, I became obsessed with Tiger King (just like everyone else). Every day, I was searching the hashtag on Twitter to see what other people thought and how they were reacting to Carole and the mysterious death of her husband. Feeling frustrated about being stuck inside and the idea that many people are cooped up with their significant others, (many who are at their breaking point and probably wish they could end the relationship), I picked up my guitar and began playing a simple baseline. The words came out naturally. The demo was short and concise, but I wanted some extra production and had been going back and forth with Alison Wonderland for a few months about making stuff together, so I sent it to her. She loved the idea. Within a day’s time, she sent it back and made it sound so good I almost started crying. Literally, we made this shit in two days. I didn’t want to be precious about it. It feels like no rules apply right now. It was something fun and relatable, and we both wanted it out ASAP.” Immediately, the track incited widespread critical applause. NME noted, “‘W.W.C.B.D.?’ walks a fine line between the two artists’ signature styles: starting off with pronounced riffs clouded in phem’s lo-fi demeanor, before exploding into dark, moody production from Alison Wonderland.” EDM.com praised it as “short and sweet,” and YOUREDM claimed, “For ‘W.W.C.B.D. phem delivers a haunting vocal performance as Wonderland drops a dark trap beat dripping with animal print. We can always expect music eclectic in nature from phem, but with this track’s acoustic textures and eerie tones, this is AW like we’ve never heard her before. Much like the Tiger King, we feel it.” Dancing Astronaut summed it up best as, “impressive.” phem continues to make waves. Last year’s “Sorry Mama” [feat. Machine Gun Kelly] racked up over 4.5 million global streams to date and received the endorsement of OnesToWatch who promised the track, “Will have you confessing your sins.” Meanwhile, her collaboration with Gabriel Black, “Dead Yet, surpassed 4 million cumulative streams thus far and was prominently featured in an episode of HBO’s hit show, Euphoria. Conjuring a bold brew of alternative, pop, and hip-hop, Los Angeles artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist phem extracts masterful melodies from personal conflict, otherworldly darkness, and all kinds of important questions. Living and working out of a Crenshaw studio, she introduced herself with the independent Can’t Kill Me EP in 2018 followed by the VACUMHEAD EP a year later. As she captivated a growing fan base, she collaborated with everyone from G-Eazy to Lil Tracy and delivered series of buzzing singles “Sorry Mama” [feat. Machine Gun Kelly] and “Dead Yet” with Gabriel Black, churning out 20 million streams. Not to mention, she landed on the pages of PAPER, i-D Magazine, Billboard, and more.

Lines like, “Never been scared of asking for help, but normally I’m in the mirror with that,” clearly suggest that Chaz has faced inner battles and he’s looking to the mirror to address them. The production borrows from the familiar Trick Daddy hit “I’m A Thug.” Chaz’s infectious cadence provides the perfect bounce. while Cam Wallace’s smooth cameo on the memorable hook lends contrast to the turmoil Chaz speaks of in the verses. Released in 2018, Chaz’s “Can’t Stop Us” fueled the trailer for Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which has racked up over 36 million views to date. Praising 2018’s “Caliente” (feat. IDK & Jay 305), Complex said, “Atop the production all three rappers show their worth, making for a compelling trio, so hopefully they show up together somewhere else in the future. It’s clear this is the start of a new era for Chaz French, and it’s certainly a sound that works well for him.” Upon the release of “Handful” featuring Rich The Kid, HotNewHipHop observed, “The trap soul-like track invites listeners to head-bop and vibe immediately—thanks to Chaz French’s smooth vocals…Rich The Kid offers a few quotable bars perfectly suited for a fire Instagram caption.”

Is your immune system up for a challenge?

By Ara Suppiah, MD
Emergency room physician

The coronavirus is a virus that mutates quickly, making it unstable and difficult to contain. This also means we don’t have the typical immunity we’d have from other viruses. In addition to being cautious about social distancing and hand washing, here are some ways you might keep your body’s immune system in top condition.

Manage your body’s inflammatory response

Most people will be fine if they get the coronavirus, but some will wind up in the ER due to a powerful inflammatory response. Your goal, especially while you are healthy, should be to minimize chronic inflammation, which is mainly driven by unhealthy omega-6 fatty acid levels in the body. This buys your body more resilience when infected by a virus.

Consuming more anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, particularly DHA and EPA, will help counterbalance the omega-6s. The body can’t make DHA and EPA. We have to get them from such foods as fatty fish, fish oils and avocados. You can also do yourself a huge favor by decreasing the amount of processed foods you eat because they may contain oils that are too inflammatory.

I suggest stocking two specific oils in your pantry. Malaysian certified sustainable palm oil is a naturally balanced fatty acid blend. It contains less inflammatory omega 6s than most commonly used seed oils such as canola, sunflower or corn oil. Plus it is rich in natural antioxidants, such as vitamin E tocotrienols. And, it also won’t break down into toxic substances when you cook with it at any temperature under its smoke point. When an oil is heated beyond its smoke point, its molecular structure begins breaking down. It may even form trans fats. The oil may lose its nutritional value, and give your food a bitter or burnt taste. Once it reaches that point, the oil really shouldn’t be consumed.

I also recommend chia oil, especially if you have non-fish eaters in your household. Chia oil is one of nature’s richest sources of plant-based ALA omega-3 fatty acids. It’s also loaded with antioxidants and phytosterols for overall wellness. Chia oil can be used for some cooking applications such as sauteing and stir frying, and is good to use as a finishing oil to drizzle over salads or use in dressings, vinaigrettes, sauces, dips and spreads.

Exercise (but with caution)

Social isolation can be frustrating, especially for people used to being active. In addition to working in the ER, I am the personal physician to many of the world’s top golfers. Here is some of the same advice I’m giving professional athletes.

Going for a brisk walk or light run is helpful. Moderate exercise for 45 to 60 minutes mobilizes immune cells. It keeps them actively moving between the blood and tissues, where they can be very vigilant against foreign invaders. It also supports the lymphatic system and supplies organs with more oxygen. Another benefit to low-intensity exercise is that you’re more likely to tap into your body’s fat-burning zone for fuel.

Just be very careful about high-intensity workouts. Longer workouts, and those where you are reaching 70 to 80 percent of max heart rates, will stun or slow your immune system for two hours afterward. That’s not what you want right now! You’re also triggering an inflammatory response.

If you do exercise heavily, you can combat its immune-stunning effects by eating carbohydrates immediately afterward. I know that for some people, such as those following the keto diet, this may be challenging. But it’s super important to lessen the level of stunning the immune system undergoes.

Use good hydration and sleep to manage stress eating

Right now in kitchens across America, families are making decadent treats to help pass the time. Others are reaching for unhealthy prepared snack foods. When you crave processed foods such as packaged sweets, it may either be because you’re thirsty or because you are not eating enough of the healthy stuff. Your body is saying you’re undernourished, so it’s responding with cravings for high-calorie foods to keep you alive. Try drinking 16 ounces of water, then see if you still have the cravings.

Also, don’t give into the temptation of staying up later just because you’re working from home and don’t have the commute time. When you are sleep deprived and tired, you have almost no control over your food cravings. That’s because the hormones that tell you when you are hungry or full aren’t communicating. Try to maintain your regular sleep schedule.

Now is the time to get into better eating habits. Right now, with limited store hours and restricted movement, you’re less able to buy unhealthy foods on impulse. If you struggle with willpower, go out and buy healthy, more nourishing foods. Use this period to your advantage.
