BALANCING SENTIMENTAL VALUE WITH DECLUTTERING AND ORGANIZING

Now that we are sheltering at home, many of us will start to tackle house related projects, including decluttering and organizing. But, letting go of things isn’t always easy. How much stuff do you have in your house that you keep around for purely sentimental reasons? Like that old t-shirt from a favorite vacation or the set of silverware that belonged to your grandparents?

While we all want to hold on to special memories, the impulse to “hold on to things” can quickly lead to clutter and mess if left unchecked. It’s important to balance the need to save with the need to streamline and get organized.

Admittedly, it can feel hard to have to give up precious family possessions. If you’re struggling with belongings of sentimental value while trying to declutter your home, try these tips:

1. CREATE A KEEPSAKE STRATEGY

If your sentimental belongings are starting to take over rooms in your home, it may be time to create a keepsake strategy and evaluate each item.

For example, if you recently lost a close family member, it can be tempting to want to hold on to so many of their possessions. But the truth is, even if your grandmother was the best knitter in the world, there’s no need for you to hold on to every blanket and sweater she made.

Divide your sentimental items into categories, and make a point to only keep a few from each category. For all your sentimental items, ask yourself:

Why is this specific item sentimental? If it’s because of the person you got it from, consider if you can remember the person and the special memory without this particular item.
Is this an item you’ll use?
Can you give it to someone who would get more use and value out of it?

Hopefully with this keepsake strategy, you’ll hold on to only a manageable number of sentimental belongings.

2. SAVE IT TO THE CLOUD

Rather than keeping large bulky physical items, can you take a photo and save it to the cloud? New research demonstrates that taking and keeping a digital photo can help you both preserve a memory (sometimes even longer than a physical item which may fade or grow moldy) while also decluttering your home.

You may even prefer to take digital photos of old family albums, as the digital photos will last longer without taking up space in your house.

3. KEEP THINGS IN THE FAMILY

While it may feel difficult to have to give up a precious family heirloom, ask yourself if it’s time to pass it on to someone else in the family who can now get better use from it.

If it feels right, you might even want to give items to close friends, including them in the circle of your “wider family.” It might be the best way to keep family heirlooms and traditions going into the future.

4. DO GOOD

If there’s no one you know who might be able to use your old sentimental items, maybe you can give them away to someone in need.

While it can be hard to part with something you love, the knowledge that someone else can need it and appreciate it even more might help you feel better about your choice to give things away.

5. FOCUS ON THE FUTURE

While you certainly want to never forget where you came from, you also want to make sure you’re not stuck in the past.

It can be soothing and healing to spend some time in nostalgia. But don’t lose sight of your useful future goal to declutter and organize your home. Streamlining your possessions will help everyone in your home live calmly and more efficiently, and that’s definitely a worthwhile reason to declutter.

Release Original Song, “Quarantine Crazy”

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Super Bowl champion and FOX NFL analyst, Terry Bradshaw, along with Sony Music Entertainment, will debut a new single, “Quarantine Crazy,” at midnight EST/9 p.m. PST on Thursday, April 23.

The football star and iconic entertainer has channeled his musical talents into the song, which will be available on iTunes, Spotify, Pandora and other outlets. Co-written by country singer Jimmy Yeary, “Quarantine Crazy” playfully chronicles the plight of the current “safer-at-home” quarantine mandates.

“After weeks of staying home and social distancing, I think we can all relate to feeling a bit ‘Quarantine Crazy’,” said Bradshaw. “However, it is more important than ever to remain home and stay safe. We will all get on the other side of this soon, but in the meantime, I hope this song brings a smile to your faces.”

A portion of the proceeds received from the sale of the song will support local food banks in Oklahoma and Texas.

Bradshaw, who has a long history in music and entertainment, was signed to a 31-show residency with “The Terry Bradshaw Show” at Luxor Hotel and Casino for 2020. New dates for his Las Vegas show have not yet been announced. His first foray into music, a cover of Hank William’s classic “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” landed him on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1976. He also hit the charts with his follow up single, “The Last Word in Lonesome is Me.” Bradshaw has released two albums in his career, toured with gospel artists, The Isaacs, and participated in FOX’s singing competition, “The Masked Singer.”

Despite its incredibly relevant chorus, “Weird!” was written prior to the shelter-in-place orders. Built on frenetic beats, shimmering guitar work, and particularly soulful vocals from YUNGBLUD, the track captures a mood of uncertainty that the 22-year-old artist felt his listeners might find relatable.

“I wrote the song about the weirdest time in my life ever imagined,” says YUNGBLUD. “I felt like the ground beneath me was a maze that was shape shifting and I felt like I was going to fall down the cracks and, in my opinion, the world feels exactly like that right now. I wanted this song to make everyone feel that everything was going to be alright no matter how weird things get.”

Now at work on his sophomore album, YUNGBLUD recently premiered THE YUNGBLUD SHOW — a series which aired on his YouTube channel. Born in Yorkshire, England, 22-year-old recording artist YUNGBLUD (Dominic Harrison) is a multi-instrumentalist who first picked up a guitar at age two and began writing his own songs at age 10. Harrison is known for voicing what he feels are major concerns for his generation, using his music to unite and empower the youth of today. YUNGBLUD shot onto the scene in 2018 with his self-titled EP. His full-length debut 21^st Century Liability followed where hechanneled his outrage about the state of the world into confrontational, yet catchy songs that are steeped in both punk fury and pop melodicism. In 2019 YUNGBLUD released Live In Atlanta and hope for the underrated youth EP which debuted top 10 on the UK Official Albums chart. Nearly a year after YUNGBLUD’s “The YUNGBLUD Show Ep1 – one of the first livestream concerts of the pandemic – the 23-year-old UK recording artist returns with a YouTube Music Nights livestream which will benefit the NIVA Emergency Relief Fund. “The YUNGBLUD Show Live,” will stream live on March 11 on YUNGBLUD’s OfficialYouTube channel from 12pm PST. Highlights will include YUNGBLUD, Tommy Lee and Dave Navarro performance and a YUNGBLUD/Avril Lavigne duet. Machine Gun Kelly will also perform. YUNGBLUD and rising artist renforshort will debut Samsung Music Galaxy Thursday (#SamsungMGT), a new weekly ritual to introduce music lovers to emerging artists from around the globe. Other special guests will include LILHUDDY and KSI.

Recalling his first livestream performance of 2020, YUNGBLUD says, “This was a monumental moment in my career. It became bigger than any of us ever anticipated. I’m craving to get back on stage every single day and can’t wait to do this with some incredible guests. It’s been so hard for independent venues. I wanted to partner with NIVA because independent venues are the backbone of the music industry and give young artists the chance to have their music heard. YouTube launched the Music Nights series last year following Save Our Stages Fest in association with the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA). The YouTube Giving “donate button” will appear on the watch page during YUNGBLUD’s livestream, making it easy for fans to support the NIVA Emergency Relief Fund, which benefits independent music venues impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. YUNGBLUD will also be releasing an LTD shirt, available HERE, with all proceeds going to the NIVA fund.

YUNGBLUD’s new album, weird! (Interscope), debuted at No. 1 on the UK Official Albums Chart in December 2020. The collection includes “mars,” a new song that he performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” His recording of the classic David Bowie song “Life on Mars?” was heard as the Perseverance Mars Rover touched down on the Red Planet last month.
