Helsinki Design Week Goes Virtual

Helsinki Design Week, the Finnish capital’s renowned multidisciplinary festival, will this year run as a hybrid digital and physical format. Running from 3rd – 13th September its main exhibition programme being will be hosted from the newly renovated Helsinki Olympic Stadium, with a stream of digital events taking the design festival to a wider audience and those unable to attend in person.

Now in its 16th year, the Helsinki Design Week will celebrate the theme Commitment Matters, raising questions regarding how we can achieve and improve on meaning and long-term value in design.

Jan Vapaavuori, Mayor of Helsinki said: “Design is and should be present in everything we do. Now more than ever we must ask ourselves how design can improve lives, create commitment to modern democratic values, promote sustainability and innovation in urbanization, and provide us the tools needed for championing in the post-COVID world. I believe in exposing people to these questions through design. Partnership with Helsinki Design Week helps us achieve that.”

In a partnership with Virtual Helsinki, the programme will include Helsinki Virtual Design Street, a street-long virtual exhibition, transforming the city’s main shopping street Aleksanterinkatu with three installations from emerging Finnish designers. The project will transform the city into a colourful and immersive virtual design experience, featuring the work of product designer Hanna Anonen, graphic artist Matts Bjolin, and fashion designer Fanni Lyytikäinen.

For the duration of the festival, local and international visitors to the virtual city will experience a transformed urban realm, finding themselves in flowing water or standing on grass, under Escher-inspired bridges, or looking up at the street’s facades which have been coloured, and patterned with flowers and moving abstract shapes.

Hanna Harris, Chief Design Officer at the City of Helsinki said:  “Helsinki wants to be the city that pioneers digital innovation to create engaging solutions for the future of our cities. The collaboration between Helsinki Design Week and Virtual Helsinki shows the potential for this kind of technology to not only be a playful, alternative and sustainable way to experience our city, but also demonstrates the impact it can have on how places might be envisioned, designed and managed in the future.”

Helsinki Design Week will mark the launch of the newly renovated Helsinki Olympic Stadium. Designed by architects Yrjö Lindegren and Toivo Jäntti for the 1940 Olympics, the iconic stadium has undergone a four-year refurbishment by Finnish studio K2S. It will play host to the main exhibition; a series of installations on design, architecture and fashion, presenting unique one-off pieces to largescale set ups.

Helsinki Design Week’s Programme Director Anni Korkman said: “As the largest design festival in the Nordic countries, the aim this year is to make Helsinki Design Week as safe and as accessible as possible for Helsinki’s citizens and our international visitors. The newly reopened Olympic Stadium is a fitting location to host the main Helsinki Design Week exhibition and Children’s Design Weekend, but we are also excited to expand our programme into a comprehensive digital – and for the first time – virtual format. We look forward to welcoming visitors from across the world to join the wider discussion on why Commitment Matters.”

Helsinki Design Week events will include:

  • Climate College, Friday 4th September

The Climate College introduces leading speakers and viewpoints in the field of urban planning and an eco-friendly future in cities. Mayor of Helsinki, Jan Vapaavuori, will open the day, with Hanna Harris, Chief Design Officer at the City of Helsinki, hosting the session. Registration and information here: https://www.helsinkidesignweek.com/events/climatecollege/

  • Data-Driven Design Day, Tuesday 8th September

The theme for this year’s event is “Committed to Excellent Services for Everyone”. The full-day conference will share inspiring stories about developing products and services based on data to enhance customer experience and business. You can expect thoughts and practical tips on how to utilize data in design from experts in the field. Information here: https://www.helsinkidesignweek.com/data-driven-design-day/  (VIP registration through ING Media.)

Helsinki Design Week is the latest event to take place in Virtual Helsinki and follows the unprecedented success of the virtual May Day concert earlier in the year. The event saw over 700,000 people tune in live to a virtual gig with Finnish rap stars JVG, totalling over 1.4million views by the end of the weekend. Helsinki, which was crowned as the most innovative region in the EU by the European Commission in 2019 and awarded the European Capital of Smart Tourism in 2019, is at the forefront of technical innovation. With a democratic approach to data and knowledge sharing, the city operates much like a city-wide test bed. By facilitating public and private collaborations the city is demonstrating how policies like open data and digital twins can benefit citizens and visitors alike.

JUNKBUNNY RELEASES EP TODAY

LISTEN TO DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE HERE

NEW YORK, NY – SEPTEMBER 2nd, 2020 – With nearly one million streams and acclaim from Alternative Press and more, upcoming Texas alt rock trio JunkBunny unleashes their new EP, Down the Rabbit Hole, today via LAVA Records/Republic Records—listen HERE!

The band preceded the release with a blazing single, “Another Summer Song.” Alternative Press hailed it “the perfect summer anthem,” and V13 praised it as “a song with a 1990s alternative rock spirit that would have fit perfectly into the teen movies that ruled the day back around the turn of the century.”

Among its four tracks, the EP features JunkBunny’s new single “See You In Heaven.” A snappy riff marches alongside cinematic lyrics, “She said, ‘I’ll see you in heaven, but I won’t see you tonight’.Elsewhere, “Wonderful” coasts along on an energetic punked-up beat before another chantable chorus, while “Wait For Days” alternates between hummable guitars and a sweeping refrain.

Of the EP, JunkBunny says, “We’re calling it ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’ because it’s our second EP that solidifies our sound. Now people can really go ‘down the rabbit hole’ with us as we continue to make music. We’re excited for people to hear it because there’s a little more variety in these songs, but they are some of our favorites.”

Down the Rabbit Hole arrives on the heels of JunkBunny’s debut EP Junk Rock and breakout single “Sedona” released last fall after opening for ZZ Top, The Struts and even Jon Bon Jovi. The EP was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, P.O.D.). The band recently debuted their live Junk Rock sessions shot from home—watch here.

ABOUT JUNKBUNNY
Crafting riffs with a resonance beyond their years, scrappy rock trio JunkBunny—made up of Mac Johnson (lead vocals & guitar, 19), Cayden Diebold (vocals & bass, 18) and Jake Douglas (drums, 18)—made their major label debut before they graduated high school. JunkBunny draws from a deep well of experience and inspiration that stretches back to when frontman Mac and drummer Jake first hit it off in the third grade. Jake began playing drums when he was two years old and Mac was already a burgeoning guitarist. Jamming after school and kicking around band names at recess, the duo had already established an early incarnation of the group by the time they met bassist Cayden, a guitar player since the age of nine. Early sets were filled with a diverse group of covers, from Nirvana to Rage Against The Machine, showcasing raw nerve and vibe. By high school, the band proved themselves an unstoppable live force, selling out shows across Houston and eventually performing with legendary acts like ZZ Top, The Struts, Sammy Hagar and even Jon Bon Jovi. Entering the studio with Grammy Award-winning producer Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, P.O.D.), JunkBunny crafted their 2019 debut project Junk Rock. On the eve of their ascendency to a hard-earned wider audience, JunkBunny still burns with the same fire that emboldened them as elementary school kids falling in love with music.

Mahali Mzuri Re-opens to International Travelers

As international flights to Kenya start to resume, Mahali Mzuri, the luxury tented safari camp in the Maasai Mara, owned by Sir Richard Branson and part of the Virgin Limited Edition collection of properties, has re-opened its doors once again.

With a robust set of new safety measures in place that go above and beyond local government guidelines, the camp is well prepared to bring back the magic of the Maasai Mara, putting the safety and wellbeing of its guests at the very heart of everything it does. With Kenya awarded the “Safe Travel Stamp” by the World Travel and Tourism Council for adopting global health and hygiene protocols, it makes for the perfect destination for those looking for the safety of an adventure away from the crowds.

Mahali Mzuri is located in the northern region of Kenya’s famous Maasai Mara ecosystem in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy and offers a ringside view to some of the most awe-inspiring wildlife viewing there is and also happens to be right in the path of the annual Great Migration.

Jon Brown, Managing Director of Virgin Limited Edition, commented: “We have always remained optimistic that we may be able to open some of our properties this summer and we were thrilled to announce the opening of Mahali Mzuri, the second in our collection to do so.

We have been welcoming back our resident Kenyan guests for the past month and so we are very excited that airlines such as Kenyan Airways will resume flights once again in October and allow our US guests to visit us too (subject to a negative COVID-19 test from the past 96 hours).

“Our teams have been at the forefront of ensuring we are welcoming back our guests with meticulous safety and hygiene measures, ensuring complete peace of mind and trust in everything we do.

“Guests can expect to see some slight changes around the camp, but we will never lose sight of the incredible experience we have always offered.  Guests can even stay at camp on a longer stay ‘work from home’ basis with the peace and serenity of the Kenyan bush as their backdrop, and the thrill of a game drive when it’s time to pack up work at the end of the day.

“The team in camp have been incredibly excited to finally be welcoming back guests and the wildlife are as prevalent as ever and certainly ready and waiting too!”

The camp opening was just in time for the world-famous migration and as it now patiently awaits the arrival of the migration to enter the Olare Motorogi Conservancy and right in the path of Mahali Mazuri itself in the coming weeks, guests are once again being treated to twice-daily game drives led by expert guides. With 12 luxurious tented suites that look out onto some of the world’s most stunning scenery, Mahali Mzuri offers a truly intimate experience amidst an astonishing natural spectacle.

LIBERTY × JUSTICE, FOR ALL?

“An American Lie,” the new single/video from emerging East Coast based Singer/Songwriter Rory D’Lasnow, will be available Friday July 31st, 2020 on Spotify, YouTube and all the other major services.

LISTEN TO “AN AMERICAN LIE” ON SOUNDCLOUD

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR “AN AMERICAN LIE” ON YOUTUBE

The song, written among the ever-increasing instances of violence against people of color in America, speaks to the ever widening dichotomy of “An American Lie”; the supposed promise of liberty, justice and equality for all. D’Lasnow holds the belief that we as Americans are pledging our allegiance to a false ideal that is not fully realized for many of our citizens.

“We the people are responsible for standing up to speak out when we see wrongs done to our fellow man, and to help make them right whenever we can”, Rory said, “So we protest, we become activists. But then, once the public outrage subsides, the same targeting, abuse of power, and negligence in response – which has been going on for centuries – quickly returns; to a collective shrug from the general public.”

After spending the better part of the past two years performing as the opening act for national artists at some of the East Coast’s most distinguished venues and festivals, Singer/Songwriter Rory D’Lasnow; who – like Babyface, Buddy Miles, Jimmy Cliff and Dick Dale – plays right handed guitar upside down and backwards (“Lefty” as it were; but not quite) was in quarantine writing for his new EP. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement and recognizing this important moment in history, he resolved to  contribute his music and its message to the cause. That respect and reverence for resilience is encompassed in “An American Lie.”

D’Lasnow continued, “My hope is that we can unite as a human race to eliminate the bigotry and prejudice that is so rampant in society today. My goal is to use my voice in the best way I can to stand up for equality and justice.”

“An American Lie” is available Friday July 31st, 2020

About Rory D’Lasnow

Enigmatic Singer/songwriter Rory D’Lasnow first picked up his father’s right-handed guitar as a small child, instinctively deciding to play the instrument upside-down and backwards. Most guitarists play right handed. Some play lefty guitar. Only a select few treat the instrument as if it’s not even a guitar at all such as legendary artists like Babyface, Buddy Miles, Jimmy Cliff and Dick Dale.

Despite never turning the guitar right-side up, Rory has cultivated a unique contemplative sound that has propelled him on to perform at some of the East Coast’s most distinguished venues and festivals; from the Knitting Factory, The Bowery Electric, Pianos and Rockwood Music Hall, to Revolution Music Hall on Long Island, and The Saint and Brighton Bar on the Jersey Shore.

D’Lasnow has also had the honor of opening for featured headliners such as American Idol winner Lee DeWyze, actor/musician Drake Bell, and John Corabi of Motley Crue/Dead Daisies fame. Next year, Rory is slated to perform on the Atlantic City Beer & Music Festival acoustic stage for the New Found Glory and The Early November session in April 2021.

Ten Slots with the Most Wonderful Graphics

Online slots have come a long way in their relatively short history. Whereas early titles were very clearly based on actual slot machines, advances in computer-generated images and connection speeds have allowed developers to get really creative. Modern online video slots often bear little resemblance to real-world slots. For many players, the wonderful graphics on offer are a big part of why they play slots.

In this article, we look at ten of the slots with graphics, animations, and artwork that really make them stand out from the crowd. Here are our favourite 10 slots in terms of their visual content alone!

Book of Dead by Play ‘n’ Go

Set in a Pharaoh’s Tomb, Play ‘n’ Go’s Book of Dead slot is probably the best looking Egyptian-themed slot on the market today. The game’s reels are sandwiched between great stone pillars and the symbols are all typical images from the forgotten civilisation. Each has been beautifully illustrated and gold detailing really makes them pop off the reels.

Standout performer at all online casinos

The standout feature is certainly the Book of Dead Free Spins mode. We zoom in on the book itself and flick through the pages. The expanding symbols throughout the feature magically transform too, making for some potentially epic winning combinations.

Planet of the Apes by NetEnt

This masterpiece of slot design is based on the Planet of the Apes spinoff movies. The game starts with an extravagant intro with real footage of the apes attacking human cities from the films. The reels are split into two different sets of reels, meaning it’s kind of like playing two slots at the same time.

Being a licensed slot, all symbols are represented by photoreal pictures and there’s no shortage of clips from the movies on which the title was based. Bringing the action to life are the chimps that periodically storm across the bottom of the reels or breakout of the symbols to take part in another destructive rampage. If you enjoyed the action-packed movies, we reckon you’ll love the slot too!

1,429 Uncharted Seas by Thunderkick

This nautical-themed slot with great graphics is by the innovative firm Thunderkick. On 1,429 Uncharted Seas, the action takes place on a treasure map of old. Throughout the game, there are beautiful illustrations of sea monsters, epic voyages amidst choppy seas, and traditional pictures of the sun, moon, and stars – which sailors of the day would use to navigate.

So different makes it so beautiful

Whilst the lavish animations that standout on some of our other selections are absent from the title, we really think the art style alone makes this one worthy of inclusion. The various symbols, the map itself, and full-page illustrations really look like the kind you’d see on ancient maps depicting strange lands. These give the title exactly the vibe you’d expect from a slot based on the seafarers of a forgotten time!

Gonzo’s Quest by NetEnt

Despite being almost 10 years old, Gonzo’s Quest is still one of the best-looking casino games around. The classic NetEnt Aztec adventure slot takes place at a South American temple. The symbols are represented by mysterious symbols from the ancient civilisation and the cascading reel dynamic has become a much-loved staple of many online slots.

The game is brought to life by Gonzo himself who watches over the action, ever ready to leap for joy at the player’s successes. He’s on hand to march us off to the second screen on which the game’s free spins feature takes place too. If you manage to drop a massive win, our intrepid adventurer pal catches the falling prize in his helmet before dancing a merry jig!

Birds on Wire by Thunderkick

Our second selection by Thunderkick, Birds on Wire is an amusing slot that’s all about electrocuting cute little birdies that are minding their own business. Each row of symbols is a different telegraph wire. When you click Spin, the birds jump up in unison, and flutter out of view. They’re then replaced by another set of 15 feathered friends.

Again, this one doesn’t have extravagant animations, but the art style used throughout gives it loads of character. It’s a quirky-looking slot and this matches the quirky subject matter. There are, of course, some animations. Our personal favourite is when you do match three of the same birds along a win line. A current suddenly runs through the cable and zaps them all, with tragic, yet hilarious, consequences!

Attack on Retro by Microgaming

Attack on Retro is a vision of the future from the past. You know how people (particularly movie directors) from the 1980s thought that we’d all be wearing neon suits and have wild haircuts? Well, it’s like a slot version of that.

The game is set in front of a futuristic cityscape and ominous robots scuttle up and down the side of the reels. When they line up with each other, the Attack Feature starts and a swarm of the robots descend onto the reels, adding high value symbols. Along with the garish colour scheme and plenty of animative touches, the artists got really wild with their character and symbol designs. Hoverboards, keytars, and boomboxes, are the symbols because, of course, we’ll all eventually own one of these symbols of the future from the 1980s!

Age of Asgard by Yggdrasil

Age of Asgard is a fantasy-lover’s dream and Yggdrasil’s artists really got creative when designing it. There are two sets of reels, each with their own symbols. The top set represents good and features fearsome female warriors. Meanwhile, dragons, trolls, and soldiers from an undead army are the high value symbols from the evil reel set below. All these high value symbols appear as stacks, allowing for lavish, full-length portraits of each.

Age of Asgard really comes to life when you trigger one of the special features. The Clash Feature pits fighters against one another, conjuring Wild Symbols to scatter across the reels. Then the Randomizer Wheel can transport players to a new reel set for the Ragnarok Free Spins. Surrounded by shadowy creatures and licked by the flames of two smouldering torches, the bonus feature makes the game even more atmospheric!

Arctic Valor by Microgaming

Arctic Valor is another slot that’s sure to appeal to fantasy fans. Again, the character symbols could each be taken directly from the pages of Tolkien. When these form part of epic winning combinations, they come to life with dramatic animative sequences.

At the top of the reels hang precarious-looking icicles. These can fall at random and the player must smash them to reveal bonus features such as Wild Symbols. If you manage to activate the Bonus Feature itself, you’re instantly magicked off to a different set of reels deep within an icy cave. Yet more icicles cascade down the reels throughout the feature transforming symbols in their path. All told, it’s a very impressive offering from one of the industry’s most experienced companies.

Raging Rex by Play ‘n’ Go

This prehistoric slot takes place deep in a mysterious jungle where fearsome dinosaurs are our only companions. The forest background to Raging Rex is alive with various creatures, which makes for a highly atmospheric experience.

Each of the dinosaur symbols animates when they form a winning combination. They’ll let out a bloodcurdling roar or grunt before wins are awarded. Meanwhile, the Primal Rage feature presents players with a stacked Raging Rex. The enormous reptile’s scream provides the soundtrack as the massive, and expertly illustrated, Wild Symbol jumps to new positions on the reels!

Warlords: Crystals of Power by NetEnt

Last on our list of slots with the best graphics is another fantasy-themed game. NetEnt’s Warlords: Crystals of Power starts with an impressive opening sequence that really wouldn’t be out of place on a modern video game. During the intro, we’re introduced to each of the characters and the creatures that support them in battle.

Best game of 2020

Again, as with Arctic Valor and Age of Asgard, the background and symbols for the title are impressively illustrated. They really give the feel of a battlefield and each of the mighty warriors and their powerful beastly familiars have a strong look of their own. They come alive when they form a winning combination and all other wins set the reels themselves ablaze.

Visually, it’s all very impressive and the designers managed to create a real sense of the magic within each of the power crystals that the warriors protect.  During the Free Spins mode, fireballs, daggers, and other weaponry fly. All of this combines to make Warlords: Crystals of Power easily one of the best-looking games on the market today.

Feel the spirit of the Wild West ghost town

The unique atmosphere of Wild West will never stop intriguing people. In Vegas, tourists have a unique chance to feel that Wild West thrilling spirit by booking a tour to the Wild West ghost town. The tour duration is 10 hours (10 AWESOME hours to be exact), during which visitors can learn the history of ancient cowboys, have a drink in the authentic saloon, and try their luck in gold mining. And don’t forget to purchase a cowboy hat as a souvenir from this remarkable spot.

Don’t miss the Titanic exhibition!

The sad history of the most famed liner Titanic is known to everyone. The film adaptation, directed by the eminent James Cameron, gave a second breath to the Titanic’s story and brought 11 Oscars to its creators. People still commemorate all those passengers who tragically passed away in the liner’s crash. In Vegas, you can feel the Titanic spirit as an actual traveler by attending the unique exhibition. You can step on the deck and visit recreated rooms of the legendary ship to get that realistic experience like the Titanic’s passengers decades ago. The organizers assure that those who visited their exhibition at least once would always keep Titanic’s story in their hearts.

Check the National Atomic Testing Museum

Whether you love physics or not, the National Atomic Testing Museum is a must-to-visit spot in Vegas. The museum stores unique pieces of weapons, video recordings, and letters from the times of WWII. Visitors can get a one-of-kind experience of the atomic testing and read the diaries of the prominent scientist Albert Einstein. You can discover the mysteries of atomic evolution and find out how contemporary geniuses continue their ancestors’ path by developing new top-notch technologies. You can put yourself in Sheldon Cooper’s shoes in the museum and find out what it feels like to be a talented physicist.

Visit the Red Rock Canyon

Nothing can beat the beauty of witnessing a picturesque sunset at the Red Rock Canyon. Millions of tourists annually attend this marvelous national conservation spot in Nevada. The views of the magnificent mountains and plains, incredible wildlife, and unforgettable hiking experience make the Canyon the most beloved sightseeing among tourists and locals. Visitors can book a camping tour and spend a night under the open-air, sitting near the fire and listening to the guitar. They can admire the beauty of the surrounding nature and landscape at an aerial view by booking a flight across the Canyon. This mysterious place won’t leave anyone cold.

Get unforgettable emotions in the Caesars Palace

Nevada is a gambling state, and Vegas is the heart of the most luxurious casinos and entertainment spots. When you are in Vegas, the No.1 spot to see on your map should be Caesars Palace. This magnificent place will change your vision of entertaining routine as nobody gets bored there. No wonder that this resort is titled the Palace because once you enter its doors, you dive into the parallel universe with the gorgeous halls, Michelin-starred restaurants, and lavish casinos. The majestic gambling area in the Caesars Palace will make you feel like George Clooney’s hero at Ocean’s Eleven. Visitors can have a tour in the Caesars Palace even if they don’t stay in the hotel. It is a dream place for gamblers and high rollers or casual spectators who want to feel that unique thrill.

Things to know when scheduling a voyage to Vegas

When you are in Vegas, you won’t let yourself get bored. However, there are some rules you must know when planning to visit the city of dazzle:

In Vegas, it is forbidden to drink alcohol if you are under 21.

You can’t stop a taxi on the street in Vegas. Taxis can take passengers only in the designated spots. Usually, they locate near hotels, restaurants, and casinos.

You can get married within an hour in any chapel if you provide your ID. Vegas marriages are the fastest and easy-going, though we can’t say the same thing about the divorces. When considering tying the knot in Vegas, better think twice not to pass through a tiresome divorce process afterward.

Take gambling mindfully! Though casinos and wagering activities are allowed in Nevada, there are many pitfalls that gamblers must learn before visiting a gambling spot. According to the WorldBookmakers’ experts, bettors can start wager on real money only if they set up a strategy in advance. A good strategy is a key to hit the bank on wagering and gambling.

Summing up

People who have been in Vegas at least once admit that this majestic city stole their hearts forever. If you plan a trip to the neon city, pick up the sightseeing you want to visit beforehand. You can schedule a shopping marathon, attend the largest museums in the area, go camping to the legendary Canyon, and try your fortune at the luxurious casinos. So many awesome spots and gorgeous places to visit along the way! Vegas is full of opportunities that you can discover firsthand.

National Geographic WILD’s – Jade Eyed Leopard

National Geographic WILD’S annual Big Cat Week returns next week and to celebrate, it is releasing a one-hour film from Dereck and Beverly Joubert called ‘Jade Eyed Leopard’ on 7th September.  Filmed entirely in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy in Kenya, home to among others, the luxury tented safari camp of Mahali Mzuri, the film is the fascinating story of a female leopardess.

Narrated by the actor Jeremy Irons, the film follows a young leopard named Toto born in the Maasai Mara, during the critical first three years of her life as she learns the skills to survive taking her into adulthood. The heart-warming film is perfect viewing for families and gives a real insight into the sheer beauty of the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, proving there really is no better place to get up close and personal to the real thing.

About Mahali Mzuri

How You Can Stop Fake News From Faking You Out

The term “fake news” gained traction during the 2016 U.S. presidential race between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, and it has since become a familiar phrase in the American political vernacular.

Could fake news factor into the current presidential election season? The QAnon movement has been seen by some media and political observers as an example of a politically-driven group promoting fake news. Despite a lack of evidence to support their beliefs, followers of the QAnon movement believe that President Trump is fighting a satanic deep state of global elites. Facebook booted accounts promoting QAnon.

David Dozier (www.DavidDozierBooks.com), a professor emeritus in the School of Journalism & Media Studies at San Diego State University and author of The California Killing Field, thinks QAnon’s origins and emergence into national news cycles symbolizes the intent of fake news: to influence voters.

“We live in a world where it’s hard to believe almost anything you see related to politics on social media, and sometimes in the mainstream media as well,” Dozier says. “Our democratic process for electing political leaders has suffered great harm due to these disinformation campaigns.

“Fake news is definitely an issue heading into this critical presidential election. QAnon is the latest example of how conspiracy theories on the internet can gain traction and build followings.”

Researchers have suggested that false information presented as news fuels public distrust of political leaders and the media, influences people’s attitudes, and damages democracy.

“We’ve never been more polarized as a country, and fake news is dividing us further,” Dozier says. “It’s become a phenomenon, but people still have the power to sort the true from the false.”

Dozier suggests these ways to spot fake news:

  • Don’t fall into the bias trap. People can fall prey to confirmation bias, a tendency to favor information that confirms or supports one’s prior beliefs or values. Regardless of where you fall on the political spectrum,” Dozier says, “people lend more credence to information that reinforces what they already believe. To counteract the confirmation bias trap, try changing your perspective by taking the other side of the argument. Overall, be skeptical and think critically.”
  • Pause before you share or retweet. “Some people have an emotional reaction to a piece of news and think they should share it,” Dozier says. “But it’s important to know that the people who create disinformation are designing it to do just that – trigger an emotional reaction. So wait and ask questions about the content. Who shared it or created it? Why was this shared? Do some investigating.”
  • Go straight to the source. “The algorithms used by social media and news aggregator sites are designed to make sure we see stories geared to our interests,” Dozier says. “This makes it harder to identify if a story is real or fake, and who created it. Instead of following a link from the outlet that shows up on your social media, go online and head straight to the source. Inspect the poster’s profile and their post history. See if the poster has affiliations that are in line with spreading a certain point of view.”
  • Inspect the content the account posted. Conducting a reverse image search can make it easier to authenticate an image by finding its source. Fake news/disinformation often uses old images,” Dozier says. “With a reverse image search, you can search for previous instances of an image that appears online and to find if the image used is from a different story. You can also reverse image search the profile picture to see if that picture or similar photos are being used on other accounts. That’s a common practice to create fake personas online.

“Getting to the facts is getting more difficult,” Dozier says. “We have tons of information coming at us from all angles and platforms. It’s more important than ever to think for ourselves.”
