25th Annual Pie Championships

American Pie Council Names the Nation’s Top Commercial Pie Makers. 25th Annual APC National Pie Championships in Orlando Yields Sweet Results!

With a sea of pies enticing eager judges anticipating their first tasty bites, the sweet smell of success was in the air in Orlando as the best commercial bakers in the nation were named at the 25thAnnual APC National Pie Championships in Orlando. Held April 12 and 13 in Orlando at the Renaissance Orlando SeaWorld Hotel, here amateur, professional and commercial bakers entered their most delicious pies in both sweet and savory flavor categories for bragging rights to be named the nation’s best. In the commercial division, bakeries from across the nation and Canada competed in flavor categories including savory pot pies and sweet flavors ranging from apple, lemon and pumpkin to citrus, fruit and berry, pecan and banana cream to sugar-free and even an open category. The pies were taste-tested by more than 200 judges.First place was awarded for the best commercial pies in each flavor category, with top honors going to Harlan Bakeries, with 19 blue ribbons, closely followed by Weston Foods, with 18 blue ribbons.

Top pies from Harlan Bakeries, Avon, Ind., included “Bursting from Berries,” “Chocolate Maple Sugar Creme,” “Honey Crisp Apple,” “Cheesecake Pecan Brittle” and “Peachy Keen.” Some of the judges favorites from Weston Foods, Brownsburg, Ind., included “I Only Have (Cherry) Pies for You,” “Guittard Chocolate Cherry Pie,” “Strawberry Rhubarb Lattice Pie,” and “Hold the Sugar Pineapple Pie.” In addition to sweet pies, first place ribbons were awarded for three savory pot pies including Southeastern Grocers’ “Traditional Premium Chicken Pot Pie” and “Premium Pizza Pot Pie” and World of Pies’ “Spinach and Feta Pot Pie.”

We’re proud of our 25 years fostering America’s love affair with pie and can’t wait to see what our bakers cook up over the next 25 years!” Once judging commenced, pie industry icons took to the stage in on-going seminars that provided everything from tips and the latest industry research to demonstrations showcasing new baking techniques. Chef Joe DiPaolo of Pinnacle Foods and Meg Harris from Conagra Brands demoed the art and science of pie thickeners; while Chef Josh Johnson, The Guittard Chocolate Company, focused on the flavor impact of layers and textures and Chef Monica Kate of Dobla focused on creating your unique identify using Dobla, to name a few of the seminars.

Helping Children Experiencing Homelessness to Succeed in School

At HELP USA, we believe that housing is only the beginning. We do everything we can to ensure that our residents thrive. For our youngest residents, this means making sure they get the best education possible. At HELP Bronx Crotona, a family shelter in the South Bronx, we have dramatically improved school attendance rates for the youth who live there. As a result of a partnership with the NYC school system, over 25% more students have good attendance rates. We’re excited that our young people have made such dramatic progress, and look forward to sharing more about our clients’ successes in the future!

April is National Volunteer Month, and we’d like to say thank you to the many volunteers that help us accomplish our mission. We recently hosted a very special day of service in Newark, NJ. Students from Rutgers beautified the grounds of JBJ Soul Homes, and Jon Bon Jovi himself even stopped by! The exclusive documentary shows the band visit and play intimate gigs at some of their favorite record shops in various cities including Nashville, Atlanta and Indianapolis, as a way to connect with their fans, ‘We closed the doors a bit more and we lost the beauty of connecting with a smaller audience.’

The Vevo original also features a cameo from legendary Americana guitarist Jerry Douglas, who joins the band during a special performance. The band take a retrospective look back to their 2012 hit record Babel, documenting how much has changed and the impact it has had on their current record, Delta.

 Vevo also showcases exclusive behind the scene shots of the band during their sold-out Delta tour and ends with an acoustic version of Mumford  Sons single “Wilder Mind.” In the documentary they note: ‘This tour is a celebration of collaboration. One of the most successful acts to come out of the 21st century’s English folk revival, Mumford  Sons’ agreeable fusion of bluegrass, folk, country, and rock found favor with audiences both at home and abroad. In 2008, the band released their debut EP, Love Your Ground. A 2009 follow-up EP, Cave and the Open Sea, caught the attention Island Records, and more importantly, Arcade Fire producer Markus Dravs, who would go on to helm the band’s debut long-player, the Mercury Prize-shortlisted Sigh No More which sold over a million copies, earning Grammy Award nominations for Best New Artist and Best Rock Song. Their 2012 Dravs-produced sophomore outing, Babel, debuted at number one on the U.K. Albums Chart and the U.S. Billboard 200, and eventually took home that year’s Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The group’s third studio long-player and most stylistically diverse outing to date, arrived in early May 2015, and charted at number one in seven countries. The following year, during their South African tour, they recorded Johannesburg, an EP named after the city where it was recorded. In 2018 the band emerged with the single “Guiding Light,” the first offering from their fourth effort, Delta, which was released later that year.

CRAFTED PALOMA

Ingredients:

  • 2 parts Altos Plata
  • 2 part Fresh Grapefruit Juice
  • 1 part Lemon Juice
  • ½ part Agave Syrup
  • Pinch of Salt

Method:

  • Frost the glass rim with salt and crushed pink peppercorns.
  • Pour all the ingredients except the grapefruit juice into the glass.
  • Mix using the ALTOS molinillo to dissolve the agave syrup.
  • Fill the glass with ice and finish with the pink grapefruit juice.
  • Garnish with half slice of pink grapefruit.

SMOKIN’ ACES

Ingredients:

  • Altos Plata
  • 1 part Altos Plata
  • 1 part Mezcal
  • 1/2 Part Lillet blanc
  • 2 parts Pineapple puree
  • 1 barspoon Agave syrup
  • 1 barspoon Lime Juice

Method:

  • Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice.
  • Double strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  • Garnish with pineapple leaves.

TOMMY’S MARGARITA

Ingredients:

  • 2 parts Altos Plata
  • 1 part Fresh Lime Juice
  • ½ part Agave Syrup
  • Lime Wedge for garnish

Method:

  • Build up all the ingredients in a shaker with ice.
  • Shake, and strain into an ice-filled cup.
  • Garnish with a lime slice on top.

The video is for his new single “Makeup,” which has garnered nearly 1 million streams since its release two weeks ago and was featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist.

There’s a poignant yet feel-good vibe that makes 21-year-old recording artist Landon Cube’s sound infectious. The Southern Maryland native has a diverse history within music, punctuated by his versatile catalog. With Landon’s new single “Makeup,” the young star on the rise is geared to level up to the next chapter in his career. At 16, he made the firm decision that music was his chosen trajectory and once he graduated high school, he dropped his introductory cut “Euphoria.” His participation with local viral video crew Cufboys added fuel to the fire, as Landon began galvanizing a fan base through his laid-back authenticity and knack for melding sounds.
