The Unsung Heroes Behind Your Favorite Songs

By Deborah Fairchild

Maybe you commute to work listening to The Weeknd’s “Save Your Tears,” or you make chores around the house more palatable with a little assistance from the sounds of Drake or Billie Eilish.

If you follow popular music at all, you almost certainly are aware of those performers as well as many other big names in the business, such as Post Malone, Lizzo and Ariana Grande.

And when you think of their songs, you likely think of them.

But recorded music is not the work of just one person, no matter how talented and charismatic that person is on stage. Backup musicians, producers, songwriters, engineers and others also play significant if often unheralded roles in coaxing into existence those tunes that, as some have said, become the soundtracks for our lives.

To get an idea of the plethora of people whose efforts go into your cherished songs, take a journey through the credits for country singer Luke Combs’ album “What You See is What You Get.” Roughly 40 people earn a mention, from drummer Jerry Roe to engineer Alex Gilson to mastering assistant Megan Peterson. Luke may be the focus for country music fans who listen to the album’s songs, but it becomes clear pretty quickly that he is not doing it all by himself, as he likely would tell you.

That list of names connected to the album is more than just a formal acknowledgement to those who lend their talents to the final product. In the music industry, credits are part of the resume, so building an accurate record of who contributed to what is crucial for everyone involved. If, for example, you do digital editing, you want to be able to say you worked on Luke Combs’ album – or Drake’s or Taylor Swift’s – and you want to have the credit listed to prove it. That will help pave the way for more job opportunities down the line.

And, of course, there’s the not-so-small matter of the paycheck. Most people are drawn to the music industry because it’s something they enjoy, but they need to pay bills like anyone else. Yet, unless someone is keeping an accurate record of who contributed to the work, that pay might not make its way to the correct and deserving person’s bank account.

So, credits are important on many levels and they are something I take seriously, as you might imagine since my company, VEVA Sound, helps musicians store and organize their projects through our VEVA Collect digital platform.

But I’m also confident that the average music fan doesn’t spend as much time as I do contemplating the many, many people who deserve some credit for popular – or even obscure – songs. In fairness, the tendency to overlook behind-the-scenes people is probably true in a lot of other industries as well.

Books often include an acknowledgements page, or pages, where the author names editors, researchers, literary agents, librarians or anyone else who helped make the book a reality. Many readers, though, just skim the acknowledgments or skip them altogether. Movies end with not just a cast list, but an extensive cataloging of anyone who remotely had a hand in creating the movie, from key grips to gaffers. Unfortunately, moviegoers often mosey toward the exit as the credits begin to roll rather than stick around to check out all the names. That is, they leave unless they suspect the director included a bonus post-credits scene, as the Marvel movies tend to do, and even then they may pay little attention to the names.

Such realities may leave people thinking, “Who cares about credits anyway?”

Plenty of folks, that’s who.

But it was thinking along those lines that got those of us at VEVA Sound to begin wondering if there was something we might be able to do to create more awareness around music credits to make sure they – and the people behind them – don’t get overlooked.

What came out of that was a Credits Are Cool™ campaign that raises money for charity while at the same time emphasizing just how important those people behind the scenes are to the songs that keep music lovers humming, dancing and smiling.

To pull off the Credits Are Cool effort, we collaborated with a number of musical artists to create hoodies, t-shirts and sweatshirts with the name and image of a song on the front. On the back is a list of people who contributed to the song. In a sense, we are trying to create a movement, proclaiming that we should celebrate everyone who was involved in making music – not just the performers whose names are on a marquee.

Artists whose songs appear on the Credits Are Cool clothing include Sam Tinnesz, Wendy Moten, Sonia Leigh, Hailey Steele, Right Said Fred, Ty Herndon, Jamie O’Neal, Shelly Fairchild, Teke Teke, Whiskey Wolves of the West, and Tayla Lynn, granddaughter of Loretta Lynn.

Maybe through this initiative, in some small way, those who listen to music will take a moment to think about the fact that recorded music is a much more collaborative effort than they might ever have imagined. It could even open up career ideas for young people who love music and would like to work in the industry, but didn’t realize that there’s room for people other than the talented vocalist and the guitar hero.

Yes, credits really are cool because they are not just about seeing your name in lights. They are about how you get work in the ever-competitive music industry.

Celeste and MK Release Stop This Flame

Celeste has teamed up with dance music icon MK for the collaboration of the summer. Today, Celeste x MK release a new version of “Stop This Flame” via Interscope.  Celeste’s breakthrough track takes on a new life with the help of MK; it’s a version that you’ll be hearing at nightclubs and festivals, and at barbecues that have turned into heady house parties. It’s an indelible pop song transformed into a dance-floor ready hit.

This is the house music pioneer’s only remix of the year so far.  When MK (Marc Kinchen) heard Celeste’s soulful original, released back in January 2020, he knew he had to sprinkle some of his magic dust on it. The Detroit native was one of the genre’s first superstars when he emerged in the 90s and went on to work with Mary J Blige, Snoop Dogg, Rihanna, Beyoncé and more. His team-up with Celeste elevates “Stop This Flame” from stirring singalong into a thumping and exhilarating rave anthem.

MK has been at the cutting edge of dance music for over three decades. Another busy year has seen the prolific producer release his thrilling new single “Chemical” as well as starring in a new global ad campaign for Jaguar Cars. More recently he just announced details of a bumper tour of Europe and North America during the final quarter of 2021 spanning no fewer than 25 dates. MK has made a career out of redefining what dance music can be, amassing a growing pile of platinum selling records and boasting over six hundred million streams.

The Celeste x MK reworking of “Stop This Flame” is the next step on Celeste’s remarkable rise. Her debut album Not Your Muse entered the UK Charts at Number One in February, and the LA-born, Sussex-raised singer-songwriter was nominated for three Brits, as well as BAFTA and Oscar nods for “Hear My Voice,” a track she co-wrote with composer Daniel Pemberton for the Netflix film The Trial of The Chicago 7. No one has quite encountered Celeste as you hear her on this entrancing new version of “Stop This Flame.”

Laptop, Tablet or Phone: Which One to Choose for Study?

Modern gadgets have become an excellent source of knowledge. Now everyone can enter a search query to find important data. There are many interesting gadgets that you can use to improve your educational experience. It is worth noting that most students tend to choose laptops, smartphones, and tablets. But which gadget is the highest priority? What should you choose, and is there a clear distinction between the types of tasks performed? Let’s find this out.

The Main Difference Between Gadgets

First, let’s look at the main differences to understand which gadget will be relevant to you. Let’s start with the form factor. Laptops are analogous to a personal computer with a screen, touchpad, and keyboard. This is a versatile device that will be a great companion for any student. The fact is that it is easy to take a laptop with you to a lecture, to a park or another city. You also don’t need to look for a power source. Average notebooks can operate on a single battery charge for 5-10 hours.

Tablets and smartphones are completely different categories of devices. The main difference is the form factor and the lack of touchpads or physical keyboards. Instead, such devices have a touch screen. As a rule, the diagonal of such gadgets rarely exceeds 10-12 inches (5-7 inches for smartphones). These are mobile devices that are designed to access applications and the Internet. For example, you can easily find myassignmenthelp overview or visit trusted sources when looking for information.

Reasons to Choose a Laptop

The main argument for any laptop fan is versatility. Such gadgets can be quite useful. First, it will make it easier for you to search for information on websites. Also, typing is much more comfortable if you are using a keyboard rather than a touchpad. Secondly, laptops are powerful enough to use video editors, charts, and other software. And don’t forget that Windows, Mac, or Linux are much more comfortable when it comes to working with files and archives.

Reasons to Choose a Smartphone

Smartphones are very compact. You can take such a gadget with you and not worry about not finding any information like speedypaper review. Plus, you can perform basic text editing, video cutting, or data searches on your mobile gadget. Such a device is multifunctional. Download any educational app or read PDF books to learn something new. Such gadgets can be inexpensive, especially if you don’t need a high-performance and quality photo unit.

Reasons to Choose a Tablet

A tablet is an analog of a smartphone but with a large screen. As a rule, this feature means that it will be more comfortable for you to browse sites, type text, and combine several windows on one screen. Plus, tablets have a more extensive battery than smartphones. This means you can take longer to write your essay or copy files for your project. Most tablets have the main camera and a front camera, which is convenient for students. You can take pictures of papers, lecture schedules, or other important things.

Why Is It Worth Using All Gadgets?

The point is that each device has unique features, advantages, and disadvantages. For example, your laptop is the most comfortable gadget for typing, watching videos, or working with specialized applications. Don’t forget that multi-window interfaces and commands are much more productive than clicking on a touch screen. At the same time, you have to come to terms with the fact that some laptops are quite bulky and large. A tablet is a compromise that you have to live with.

Such gadgets do not have a keyboard and mouse. But, of course, you can connect such devices. But why do you need such limitations if you can buy a laptop? If we go back to smartphones, the situation can become comical. Of course, you can easily search for anything on the Internet and even use text editors. But imagine how difficult it is to type and edit large text on a small screen. Are you ready to connect a keyboard and mouse to your 5-inch gadget? It will look very comical and ridiculous.

If your budget allows you to buy all the gadgets, then this would be a wise choice. Buy a smartphone and laptop as essential tools for finding data and working with files. There are many situations when a specific gadget will help you complete some tasks better. Do not dwell only on a laptop or tablet. When you have all the gadgets, you can reduce the risks. Let’s say your laptop won’t turn on.

What are you going to do? Most likely, you will take your tablet and send it to a service center. Consider your smartphone as a last resort of hope if all other devices are unavailable at the moment. Then you can reduce your risks and enjoy all the benefits of your gadgets. And don’t store data on one device. The best option is to use cloud technologies and each of the gadgets, depending on the situation.

Janset × Oh Yes!

Janset returns with a brand new video for her optimistic bilingual rap track, “Oh Yes!”. Watch the video here

Directed by Ben Brook, the video opens following Janset in an off-license as she explains the Turkish phrase which helped inspire the track, ‘Tabii Ki De Gelecek’ (which translates as “Of course it will come/happen/become real”). The visual then sees Janset performing the track across various locations, showcasing her undeniable swagger and impressive flow.

“Oh Yes!” marks the latest release in a series of singles from various global artists to be released on Red Bull Records. Dedicated to discovering and showcasing talent on an international scale, Janset is the latest ground-breaking artist to partner with the label.

Speaking on “Oh Yes!”, Janset said; “I wanted to write a song about attracting good things in difficult times, and semi-highlighting that perception changes everything, therefore if we want to change our reality, we’ve got to first change our thoughts. A feel-good mantra of a song, which I hope would uplift people’s spirits. I was curious as to what makes other people shout ‘OH YES!’ too. As for me, it was a moment when things started to make sense… like an ‘ah-a’ moment creatively. When you believe in yourself… things fall into place.”

MC, rapper, and musician, Janset continually proves her versatility as a writer and lyricist. With a string of solo releases in recent years, Janset has demonstrated her ability to transcend genre and fearlessness around trying new sounds – from grime and alternative hip-hop to trap and jazz – her thought-provoking words and powerful flow always stealing the show.

Raised in North London – by Turkish/Circassian parents who’d migrated to the UK in the ’80s, Janset has continued to develop her writing to incorporate both languages and has amassed supporters in both Turkey and the UK – taking on more creative control than ever before and shooting videos that depict parallels between the lifestyles of Istanbul and London.

“Oh Yes!” throws down a powerful marker of Janset’s exciting culture-blending sound and sees her ready to take center stage as an exciting artist to watch in 2021.

Jonah Nilsson Bad image provided by Jim Merlis and Big Hassle for use by 360 MAGAZINE

Jonah Nilsson Covers Michael Jackson’s Bad

Jonah Nilsson, lead vocalist for Dirty Loops, a major YouTube sensation, shares his cover of the Michael Jackson classic “Bad”, adding his own spin and signature vocal range stylings to make a track that’s more powerful than ever. The track features Jordan Rudess (Dream Theater), Anomalie and Justin Lee Schultz. Music industry legend Quincy Jones has championed the Swedish singer and multi-instrumentalist, taking him under the wing of his management team. Now, Nilsson has been added to the recently launched Jammcard Records roster to release his first full-length solo album Now or Never on July 29.

He’s different though, he’s got the perfect balance of right brain creativity and left brain music theory. It’s in his blood,” praises Quincy Jones. “He’s got soul, with one of the biggest ranges I’ve ever heard.”

Jonah’s take on “Bad” beams with all the elements of a worldwide pop star in the making, while paying homage to the soul and spirit that originally made the track a hit in 1987, and adding a modern flavor that gives this version an entire life of its own.

“The song takes me back to my childhood,” Jonah reminisces. “Playing video games, swimming, and running around outside of our country house, just being a kid. With my version, I wanted to keep the essence of the song as well as stretching the musical elements as far as I could without losing the original feel, which inspired many of those childhood memories.”

The funk-pop artist has come a long way since his childhood dreams of becoming an artist. Singing has been part of his life essentially since birth. Jonah started singing at his parent’s church choir at the tender age of one. Then, at the onset of his skyrocketing career, Jonah’s life changed overnight when he and a couple long-time friends uploaded their own covers of huge pop hits like Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” and Justin Bieber’s “Baby” to YouTube. The unique covers spread like wildfire in the music community, garnered them millions of views, and got them the attention of many acclaimed artists, namely 16x Grammy Award winning producer David Foster. David took them under his wing and signed the trio named Dirty Loops to their first record deal at Verve Records. And just like that, Jonah went from singing in his friend’s basement to becoming an international touring star.

Jonah has made a name for himself through his pop sensibilities and masterful knowledge of music theory from his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, which set him apart in this new democratized era in which almost anyone can call themselves an artist.

Since Jonah’s early rise to fame, he’s since got a few headliner world tours under his belt and has acquired a significant fanbase of high-profile musicians, including Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine, Brian McKnight, Rodney Jerkins, Dallas Austin, and the incredible Stevie Wonder. Even though that’s enough for some, Jonah’s humble demeanor continues to push him forward. His cheery outlook on life gives you the sense he’s unphased and ready to continue giving the gift of music.

“It’s a little scary and wonderful at the same time because I have the chance to explore and share a new side of myself that my fans haven’t seen before. I’m really excited, and I can’t wait to see what happens.”

Jonah’s debut single, “Coffee Break”, featuring Richard Bona, was self-produced and released in 2018  one version which also features LUCAS from the massively popular K-pop group NCT and released by SM Entertainment. Since then, he has also released a cinematic single “Borrowed Time” and the jaw-dropping performance video of “Work Shit Out” with Dirty Loops. Jonah will continue to share new music, and when asked about how his music will differ from Dirty Loops, he says that the music will continue to have the flirtatious and cheeky sound that they were notorious for, but with more R&B and pop elements.

“I never in a million years thought I’d be here,” confesses Jonah. His piercing blue eyes and huge smile gives you the feeling that he’s wholeheartedly telling the truth. “Living in the present has kept my feet on the ground. I just want to create meaningful music… everything else that happens is extra.”

Hauskey Shares New Single One Minute

Today, Australian artist and producer Hauskey shares his new single, “One Minute” featuring Hope Tala, via slowplay/Republic Records—listen HERE.

For the past eighteen months, Hauskey has casually been dropping low-key pop nuggets, sunshine bops and kaleidoscopic, groove-laden, synth-studded jams. They accumulate to an eclectic playlist in their own right and herald the arrival a smart young artist just dipping his toe in the water.

“One Minute” is Hauskey diving headfirst into that same pool. In a little over two minutes, he confidently condenses the smooth, smart, deeply joyous moments of his previous output, and with the help here of London’s fast-rising Bossa Nova-inspired R&B artist Hope Tala, has created his first micro masterpiece.

The pairing is Hauskey’s first collaborative work, and one that proves particularly fruitful. A fervent admirer of Hope’s output, herself a smart young artist who takes influence from literature as much as she does music, the combination of her smooth, sultry vocal delivery and Hauskey’s pop smarts brings us to a very fine meeting of like-minds.

The song itself calls out so-called “new friends” caught making false promises and jumping clear before they’ve barely managed to introduce themselves. It’s an eye-roll to all those who have wronged. A colourful ode to fickle fools.

Hauskey says, “Fake, fair-weather friends. Seems to be plenty, especially in the music industry. Being from a tiny town in the middle of nowhere, I don’t handle bullshit all that well, and can’t stand people who aren’t genuine. This song wrote itself, but I’m pretty proud of the ‘friend to finished in one minute’ line. It says everything.”

Hope adds, “I think it can be really powerful when songs are upbeat and sound fun and light-hearted but have profound lyrical meaning. Hauskey is a great writer, and it was really cool to be able to collaborate with such a talent.”

“One Minute” follows the release of recent singles “Cream Shirt,” “Go Wrong” and 2020’s debut EP Slow. An enviable collection of melody-rich songs, and a collection now brightened by the inclusion of its brightest to date.

Already introduced to great effect by Australia’s primary tastemaker station triple j, Hauskey’s music has quickly travelled much further afield with support from BBC Radio 1, and an enviable list of clued-up blogs and music publications around the globe.

EBEN image provided by Ted Sullivan and Atlantic Records for use by 360 MAGAZINE.

EBEN × Dandelions

Rising singer, songwriter & producer EBEN has announced his highly-anticipated forthcoming project Dandelions, a 5-track collection and short film arriving August 12 via Atlantic Records/Signature Entertainment. The EP is preceded by lead single “Jenny,” with the official music video making its broadcast premiere today on MTV Live, MTVU and the Viacom billboard in Times Square.

Inspired by Forrest Gump, “Jenny” likens a doomed relationship with a cheater to the trials and tribulations of the iconic film’s namesake, while an organic bass line gives way to bold horns and handclaps as EBEN’s voice flutters from intimate verses into a hummable hook.

“I was thinking, ‘Damn, Jenny put Forrest through it, and nobody really talks about that’,” said EBEN. “So, I decided to make a song. It’s about the moment of breaking up. You realize you’re always going to be hooked to this individual. You know it’s bad—but you keep going back. It’s not healthy. However, it’s the perfect intro to the ‘Dandelions’ story, and it’s got a nice summertime vibe.”

Co-penned/produced by EBEN alongside collaborators Asia Whiteacre (LouisTomlinson, 5 Seconds of Summer), Matt Campfield (Kehlani), Danny Klein and Modesty (H.E.R., Bebe Rexha) and featuring additional writing from Corbyn Besson of Why Don’t We, the Dandelions EP will drop alongside a stunning short film comprised of music videos for all five tracks. Directed by EBEN’s close friend Evan Hara, the movie was shot guerrilla-style over the span of three weeks along the West Coast from Portland throughout California. Together the EP and film take viewers on a psychological journey through the emotional stages of a breakup.

Hailed by Billboard for his “smooth pop-rap vocals” and deemed “immaculately polished”by Ones To Watch, EBEN has quickly risen to the ranks of today’s top new artists. The Cincinnati native made his major label debut with his 2020 Honeydew EP, which featured the earworm lead single “Sad Song” as well as rally cry anthem “The Kids Are Alright.”

Having amassed over 20 million career streams to date, EBEN has also proved to be an engaging live performer having supported Why Don’t We on their sold-out 8 Letters Tour, which packed arenas and placed him on hallowed stages such as Radio City Music Hallin New York City. Coming further into his own with Dandelions, EBEN took the past six months to dive deep into his artistry and experiment with his overall sound.

“I’ve really embraced who I am,” he explains. “I’ve had a lot of new experiences and met some people who impacted my life. I grew and took in all of these life lessons. I found that fire within myself. I finally became good with who I am. I have control of my destiny now. I’m confident.”
