But I still thought [her clothing] was cool because it was thrift, and things that come from places with culture and history are more important than a name brand. And I think that was taught to me through my mom, because I love all of her…like a small copper ring that she got from Nigeria. And she would add it to her outfit, and it just made so much more sense than anything that she could have purchased here, and I’m like, damn, okay, I get it. It’s energy, it’s all just energy. That’s what makes them fly.” – SZA quote regarding her mother.

HighSnobiety + NewJeans

Highsnobiety introduces its first-ever limited run magazine release, featuring the pop sensation NewJeans on a special edition cover.

In a new conversation with YJ Lee with accompanying photos by Park Sangjun, NewJeans, the supersquad of five, divulges on their year of ascendance with their candid take on their creative process, personal style, and vision for the future.

MINJI, on what their name suggests:

“Our name NewJeans refers to a “new” pair of jeans, but at the same time, jeans are also a timeless fashion staple adored by people of all ages. We are constantly striving and working hard to present music that can embrace both the new and the classic, just like what our name NewJeans suggests.”

HYEIN, on why she named the fanclub Bunnies?

“We think of our fans as our best friends, and the cute name “Bunnies” also has an alternative nickname, tto-kki, which means “bunny” in Korean!”

HANNI, on her favorite newly learned Korean phase:

“My favorite Korean phrase would have to be “설레다.” There is no direct translation of the word in English, so it’s difficult to explain. “설레다” is like the word for the butterflies you get when you’re nervous because of the anticipation and thrilling excitement. There is a fluttering, innocent feel to the word that makes [it] feel extra sentimental.”

HAERIN, on her favorite lyric:

There’s a part that goes, “I’ll run into you like serendipity.” I like the line since it’s cute and you also feel that sense of excitement when you listen to it. I can visualize the situation when I read the lyrics, which makes it feel so real.

DANIELLE, on her favorite dish to bake:

“I think the brownies turned out really well. I remember using avocado and oatmeal as alternative ingredients, and it tasted just as yummy!!”

Seinabo Sey - The One After Me released via 360 MAGAZINE.

Seinabo Sey – The One After Me

Capitol Records released Seinabo Sey’s The One After Me, her first album in five years. As she returns with new music, it is as an artist who has found her way back to herself and what drew her to music in the first place: R&B from her teens, the reggae music played in Gambia in the mornings, and the freedom to create on her own terms. Stream / download The One After Me HERE.

“I have been working on this album for almost five years, and I am very pleased with the result. Musically, it has been one of the biggest challenges of my life to put it together, while at the same time, I have learned so much. I have worked with people who have changed my life even more than before,” Sey explains. “I have love and therapy to thank for feeling freer to experience and explore things, both as a human being and as an artist. I have gone through a lot and rediscovered what music means to me.”

This change is reflected in the new songs, which Sey describes as the biggest musical turning point in her career. Unlike previous albums, she has chosen to collaborate with many producers and songwriters this time. She wrote “Yes,” the first single, in collaboration with Simon On The Moon (who also produced), Namasenda, Roger Tallroth, and Joakim Hultqvist. The song features the acclaimed Swedish artist Namasenda. Listen to “Yes” HERE.

“I have always liked Swedish folk music, and it has been present in almost every song I have made for this album,” Sey notes. “Simon On The Moon had this beat he was working on, and when he played it for me, I thought it was exciting to let folk music meet a hip-hop beat in an overt way. Simon is one of the few producers who would dare to do this. I also invited Namasenda to the song because I love her digital vocal production, which is a great complement to the song.”

The One After Me also features the upcoming single “42,” which is about a relationship Sey had with a person referred to as 42. She says, “It was the first person I dated who I realized was dangerous for me. The lyrics are a very straightforward description of what happened, and I sang the whole song in my bed.”

In the years following 2018’s I’m a Dream,  Sey had her first longer relationship, her first difficult breakup, and when she toured with her childhood idol Lauryn Hill at the beginning of the pandemic, it was a turning point.

“When I am in need, it is black women who save me and remind me of who I want to be. Lauryn did just that,” says Sey. “That she, who has shaped me so much musically, thinks I’m good, pushed me in the right direction again. That I should do what I feel like doing.”

As the world isolated itself during the pandemic, the music studio became the safe place where Sey could create music without pressure. She reflects, “I have learned a lot about myself in recent years. I am stronger, care less about what others think, and just want to experience life. I think it shows in the music. The melodies are a bit freer; I dare to play with them and with the words. I believe it’s a result of me being kinder to myself now. That feeling is also reflected in the lyrics.”

Sey has amassed over one billion combined global streams in her career to date, won four Swedish GRAMMY awards and topped the HypeMachine chart five times. TIME magazine hailed her 2015 debut album, Pretend, as “One of the Year’s Best Debut Albums.” Her hit single “Younger,” which was later remixed by Kygo, gained international attention. She fearlessly addressed grief, femininity, racial identity, and body image on I’m a Dream, which contained the singles “I Owe You Nothing” and “Remember” (featuring Jacob Banks). Sey’s live performances have showcased how her expressive and soulful voice can stun crowds into silence at festivals like Way Out West, Glastonbury, and Roskilde – and hypnotize audiences during TV performances on programs like “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and “Later… with Jools Holland.”

Towa Bird releases new single Boomerang via 360 MAGAZINE.

Towa Bird – BOOMERANG

Today, rising singer/songwriter Towa Bird shares her frenetic new single “Boomerang” via Interscope Records. An up-close look at the torment of long-distance relationships, “Boomerang” spotlights the mesmerizing guitar work that has made the Hong Kong-born artist one of the most dynamic new voices in the alt-pop world. Listen to “Boomerang” HERE.

Produced by Thomas Powers of New Zealand indie-pop band The Naked and Famous (Towa’s main collaborator on the LP), “Boomerang” emerged as the Los Angeles-based musician struggled with the constant back-and-forth of her relationship with her girlfriend, who lives in New York City.

“This song was born after spending a glorious but short-lived five days visiting my girlfriend,” says Towa, who co-wrote “Boomerang” with Powers and Alisa Xayalith (also of The Naked and Famous). “I stepped off the plane back in L.A. after crying into my face mask for the entirety of the six-hour flight, and the concept for ‘Boomerang’ was born. It’s about how long-distance relationships are possibly the worst thing ever invented — the worst party ever. (Pro-tip: don’t do it!) But if you do happen to find yourself in that sort of scenario, just know that me and this song will meet you there.”

Built on a bold collision of Britpop and garage-punk, “Boomerang” opens on a blistering riff before taking on a feverish momentum fueled by fuzzed-out guitar tones, pulse-pounding rhythms, and wildly soaring melodies. As the song unfolds, Towa’s voice channels both dreamy fragility and raw frustration, achieving a certain soulful intensity at the chorus (“Leave me like a boomerang/I know you’re coming back”). Equal parts heart-on-sleeve confession and sublimely furious anthem, the result is an immediate hit of pure emotional catharsis.

The latest offering from Towa’s forthcoming debut album, “Boomerang” arrives on the heels of Wild Heart — an April release that earned praise from the likes of NYLON (who called the track “exuberant”) and Guitar World (who hailed it as “an infectious indie-pop romp”). Another prime showcase for the dazzling musicality that landed her on Dazed’s definitive list of creatives shaping youth culture, her debut single was soon followed by a gritty but fantastical video in which Towa performs an explosive guitar solo in a glittering, Elvis-esque jumpsuit —watch it HERE.  Check out Homme girls’ recent coverage of Towa HERE.

A half-Filipino, half-English artist who spent much of her childhood in Thailand and London, Towa first started playing guitar at the age of 12, honing her technique by strumming along to The Kinks, The Who, and other bands she discovered through her father’s record collection. After forming her first band at age 14, she cut her teeth playing dive bars and street festivals in Hong Kong, then went on to study at Goldsmiths, University of London. Naming Jimi Hendrix, Joan Jett, and Prince among her longtime inspirations, Towa dropped out of school after two years to pursue her love of music and got her start producing and co-writing for other artists, in addition to posting videos that found her soloing over hip-hop, pop, and R&B songs. As her singular guitar style gained attention across the globe — and earned admiration from the likes of Willow Smith and Tyler, the Creator — Towa began sharing original music and soon after inked her deal with Interscope Records. Due out later this year, Towa’s debut album offers up an intimate exploration of queerness, identity, and the complexities of love.

Yayoi Kusama Guggenheim Museum Bilbao exhibition from June 27 to October 8 via 360 MAGAZINE.

YAYOI KUSAMA: 1945 TO NOW

  • Dates: June 27 to October 8, 2023
  • Curators: Doryun Chong and Mika Yoshitake, in collaboration with Lucía Agirre
  • Sponsored by Iberdrola
  • Exhibition organized by M+, Hong Kong, in collaboration with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

– The work of Yayoi Kusama is articulated around the great themes and questions that have guided her creative explorations: Infinity, Accumulation, Radical Connectivity, Biocosmic, Death, and Force of Life.

– Through paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, and archival materials on her happenings and performances, the exhibition shows the way in which Kusama addresses the existential questions that drive her artistic practice.

– A pioneer in the countercultural scene of the late 1960s, Kusama denounced racial and gender discriminations, critiqued war and militarism, and drew media attention with her public happenings.

– Kusama’s interest in nature is at once mystical and literal, as illustrated by her pumpkins, which the artist identifies as a kind of benevolent vegetable spirit and as a reflection of her own soul, though at the same time they offer an immediate identification with nature.

– The joyful and colorful works of her recent series, My Eternal Soul (2009–21), explore Kusama’s commitment to transforming her suffering into art “for the healing of all mankind”.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now, an ambitious retrospective dedicated to one of the most influential figures of contemporary art and a cultural icon of the 21st century. The exhibition, sponsored by Iberdrola, will immerse the visitor in the obsessive, singular, avant-garde universe of Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929, Japan) that has evolved and unfolded over the seven decades of her extraordinary artistic career.

From the first drawings she made as a teenager during World War II to her most recent immersive works, this retrospective gathers a selection of 200 paintings, sculptures, performances, moving images, large-scale installations, and archive materials.

“It’s exhilarating to hear The Japanese House’s latest track morph through pop, folk, and bluegrass over the course of three minutes.” – NYLON

The Japanese House (the acclaimed project of Amber Bain) has released new single “Sunshine Baby” from forthcoming album In The End It Always Does (out June 30 on Dirty Hit) featuring vocals from The 1975’s Matty Healy. PRESS HERE to listen, and HERE to check out Rolling Stone’s “first look.” The track also received a first play on BBC Radio 1’s Future Sounds with Clara Amfo earlier today.

Bain’s latest single “Sunshine Baby” comes to us alongside a beautiful live video directed by Sheila Johansson – PRESS HERE to watch the stunning live video. Co-produced by Bain with The 1975’s George Daniel and Chloe Kraemer, “Sunshine Baby” is the perfect melancholic dream-pop inspired track for aimlessly driving around and processing emotions. Showcasing Bain’s nuanced understanding of human emotions, the track balances feelings of nostalgia and acceptance once a relationship has run its course perfectly encapsulating the album’s cyclical nature with Matty Healy’s vocals echoing Amber’s as the track slowly brings you back to reality.

“Sunshine Baby is my nickname for my dog, and my ex and I always used to lay on the beach together being sunshine babies. The chorus is kind of a submission to the end of our relationship, but singing it in a positive light. There’s a transience in every part of a relationship, and in the circle of everything it comes back around,” says Bain.

Late last month, Bain released “Sad To Breathe” and announced her highly anticipated sophomore album In the End It Always Does – pre-save HERE. The upbeat summer anthem for the brokenhearted followed lead single “Boyhood” which sees Bain explore the complexities of gender and sexuality as well as how trauma becomes an inescapable part of a person.

Inspired by a throuple that Amber found herself in during the pandemic and the subsequent slow dissolution of those relationships, In The End It Always Does consists of songs that are each a snapshot in time from that point in her life when everything was falling apart. The music encompasses heartbreak and love lost, with brighter moments and emotional reflections on childhood trauma and identity, all woven into a tapestry of gorgeous, elevated pop music. This album sees Amber lean even further into the pop realm with help from Matty Healy and George Daniel (The 1975), Katie Gavin (MUNA) and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon among others. Amber credits Katie Gavin especially with injecting her with creative energy and inspiration throughout. The album was produced and engineered by Chloe Kraemer (Rex Orange County, Lava La Rue, Glass Animals), an experience Amber describes as “life changing” due to the unspoken, shared understanding between marginalized genders in a creative space.

In The End It Always Does follows The Japanese House’s lauded 2020 EP Chewing Cotton Wool, which featured the illustrious “Dionne” ft. Grammy-award winning songwriter Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver), as well as her critically acclaimed debut album Good At Falling (2019). She’s an alternative pop star for the modern age who is serving up vulnerable lyrics and down to earth, celestial songs that offer a reflection on love, loss, and personal identity. Her intimate, unique sound has propelled her to over 350 million streams on Spotify and garnered her major media praise from New York Times, W Magazine, Playboy, GQ, Nylon, The Fader, Pitchfork, Noisey, i-D, WWD and more.
