Antarctica Elipse

There will be a total eclipse of the sun in Antarctica, a region most can only dream about.

However, the international expert in small ship expedition cruising, AdventureSmith Explorations, announces limited availability for voyages to the Antarctic Peninsula to witness this phenomenon that will only be seen in the south polar region.

Vessels accommodating from 102 to 170 passengers are uniquely appointed to maneuver the ice-bound waters of Antarctica for positioning in the center of the moon shadow during the eclipse.

Itineraries of 20 to 24 days will utilize in-depth technology to find the best possible viewing area, hoping to ensure an unobscured sun.

Departures are round-trip from Ushuaia, Argentina, with explorations of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula, the ultimate polar wilderness. These eclipse cruises aim to be in the Weddell Sea to witness the phenomena among giant tabular icebergs and sea ice.

For some passengers the eclipse will be the expedition’s highlight. However, the ongoing adventure into spring in Antarctica will leave everyone in awe over some of the world’s most impressive scenery, including icebergs of every size and description, and Antarctica’s best wildlife viewing opportunities. Waters rich with krill are home to a variety of whale and seal species. Penguins form large nesting colonies on land.

Antarctica cruises, already once-in-a-lifetime experiences, become even more so on the following small ships in December 2021. Following are the scheduled departures for eclipse viewing:

20-Day Voyages

The Plancius, Janssonius and Hondius are purpose-built expedition vessels designed exclusively for polar cruises. These ships offer top-tier activity gear and exploratory educational travel programs, with guests spending as much time ashore as possible.

23-Day Voyage

  • Nov. 20-Dec. 12, 2021 – Antarctic Wildlife Adventure, aboard 114-guest Sea Spirit; per person double rates from $18,395. Complementing the strong credentials of the ship’s team of marine biology, history, geology and ornithology specialists will be Paul M. Sutter, astrophysicist, author, speaker, producer and on-air host. His first book, Your Place in the Universe; Understanding Our Big, Messy Existence, was published by Prometheus Books in 2018. He is the author of over 50 articles on astrophysics and serves as Chief Scientist of the Center of Science and Industry in Columbus, Ohio.

24-Day Voyages

On these National Geographic cruises, photography experts will share information about special equipment you’ll need if you want to create an image of the eclipse, like solar filters. And the onboard National Geographic photographer and certified photo instructor will prepare guests for the special challenges of shooting an eclipse from a ship, where tripods and long exposures don’t work on what amounts to a moving platform. A naturalist team and guest speakers will provide insight and background on eclipses and other astronomical features one might encounter in the Southern Ocean and Southern Hemisphere.

For intrepid explorers who can’t wait until 2021 to experience Antarctica, AdventureSmith Explorations announces availability with some rate savings on the following Antarctic expeditions in the 2019-2020 season.

How To Choose The Right Motor Trade Insurance

When you are a professional who works with vehicles every day, you need to make sure that you are protected against anything that might come your way. Say, for example, you are a mechanic who needs to drive a client’s car. Do you have the right kind of insurance cover for this?

Motor trade insurance is the perfect kind of policy for this kind of role. If you don’t already have motor trade insurance then you should make sure that you invest in the right kind of policy. Here, we are going to help you choose the right motor trade insurance for your business. Keep reading to find out more.

Do You Need It?

If your business has ‘care, custody or control’ of someone else’s car you will need Third Party motor trade insurance at the very least.

Some of the common types of roles that require motor trade insurance include car dealers, bodyshop repair garages and valets. These are the people who are likely to be driving around in someone else’s vehicle and any business that employs this kind of staff needs to have the right kind of cover. Make sure to find out if your business requires this kind of insurance before taking out a policy to ensure that you don’t waste any money in the future.

What Is Covered?

Motor trade insurance will be tailored to the needs of the business, and as such it’s impossible to say exactly what will be covered by each policy.

Each policy will be different and you might need to pay more for the more comprehensive policies. Some things that you might expect to be covered by this kind of insurance may not be, so make sure that you are reading all of the terms and conditions carefully before you take out a policy.

Comparing Prices

When you are trying to choose the right motor trade insurance policy for your business, you need to make sure that it is affordable. Policies will range in price depending on the type of cover and the company that is providing it. It is always a good idea to compare the prices of different policies before you make any commitment to the deal.

You can do this easily by using an online platform who will look at your requirements and provide you with the best deals across a range of providers. Don’t just go for the first one you see, ensure you compare providers using a price comparison platform. This will help you to find the right price and not overpay for your insurance. This is something which will help to keep your business costs low as we are sure that you will have a lot of other things to pay for.

Optional Extras

Finally, you might want to consider looking at some of the optional extras that can be added on to your motor trade insurance policy. These extras are things that can make your policy more comprehensive and personalised to your business. Some of the things that you might be able to have added on to your policy include European cover, Parts Only cover and cover for your business premises.
Some of these optional extras will add a lot of money to your policy while others might only have a small impact on the cost. Make sure to only add on the things that you need and don’t be swayed by an insurance company that wants to make some extra money from you.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right kind of motor trade insurance for your business can be tricky but if you think about it carefully then you should be able to find the right policy. It is important that you know first what you need to be covered for and that you have a budget in mind. If you can find a policy that covers everything that you need and you find it for the right price then you should be able to make the right decision.

We advise that you always compare prices before you commit to any kind of policy in the future. Soon, you’ll have your motor business up and running and be covered should anything happen while you are on the job.

Beginner’s Guide to Tasting Wine

By Pallavi Gupta

Learning about wine for beginners don’t need a degree in rocket science. Otherwise, it would be so dull, lol! Life would sack big time! So, all you need is a good tongue and maybe a nose…just kidding. There are plenty of self-proclaimed wine professionals and enthusiasts who create wine tasting terms and descriptions to credit or discredit one particular grape, that a layman like us finds it hard to understand. For first-time wine tasters, don’t worry about complicated wine tasting vocabulary. The good thing is that you can simplify the whole process by having fun with an open mind while tasting wine. To expand your wine-tasting knowledge, all you need is a little effort and focus.

Now let’s put on your wine tasting gear (if there is such a thing) and dive into the world of wine tasting to find out what makes a good wine, using these simple wine tasting tips for beginners.

Now for the juicy part of wine tasting, let’s talk about the three different types of wines available for tasting.

To simplify things, let’s talk about wine color as an essential wine guide to achieve excellent wine-tasting results. Generally, there are three distinctive colors; red, white, and rose. Reds are what make my day if you ask me. But that’s just me. Here’s an elaborate on each type :

  • Red wines – these are made from dingy colored grapes. They have bolder, pleasant tastes than the white or rose wines.  You can serve this wine at your room temperature with either starchy foods, cured meat, or even your usual meatballs.
  • White wines – these are made with green grapes, which gives them a yellowish color. They are served chilled due to their soft, lighter, and fruitier flavor. You can enjoy them with your favorite seafood, fruit, desserts, and also salads.
  • Roses – when you blend the red and the green grapes, this is what you will get. You try this type of wine with anything either chilled or at room temperature.

Now, talking about varietals.

Varietals are the actual kind of grape that is used to make the wine. Each varietal has a unique flavor and smell which changes annually. Some of the well-known wine varietals for each wine color include:

  • Reds: Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Bordeaux, Merlot, Zinfandel, and Syrah.
  • Whites: Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Moscato, and Sauvignon Blanc.
  • Rose: There is no particular varietal to speak of as most of the rose wines are blends.

To adequately sample how great a wine is, you need to incorporate all your five senses. Yes, that’s true!

Take a Good Look:

Just like food, your eyes have to initiate the wine tasting process. Just like a beautiful woman too….lol The color of wine speaks volumes about the quality of the wine, especially in red wine tasting guide. Holding out a glass of wine and tilting it a bit of a white surface, allows you to get the depth of color. At this point, you will notice the depth of color by swirling the wine glass gently and observing it closely. If the beverage moves around like water, it means that the wine is lighter and fresh with less alcohol content. A syrupy wine shows that it is more full-bodied and is potentially has higher alcohol content. Whites, indeed, can vary in color, which can give you an idea of the quality of the grape.

The older the wine, the darker will be the color. It’s due to its natural aromas that tend to separate slightly over time. Newer wines, on the other hand, are more uniform in color. The last thing you need to observe in your wine is bubbles. Bubbles are quite evident in Champagne or sparkling wine. It is fascinating to see them floating on top of your wine glass as you enjoy its excellent aroma. Unwanted bubbles mean that the wine has gone bad and needs to be tossed.

Swirl the Wine:

Wine swirling allows you to establish its texture. To follow this, carefully swirl your wine in the glass by holding the base on a smooth surface. Slowly move your glass in close circles on the table, as you gradually increase the speed for the wine to slide up along the inner surface of the glass. Continue for a few more swirls. It isn’t mandatory to swirl wine on top of a table. You can also hold the stem and circularly move the wine glass. Essentially, the benefit of wine swirling is to allow air to mix the wine to get its aroma, also displaying your love for the wine.

Smell the Wine:

As I said, you need a nose to suck all the aroma out of your wine…lol. Before the tasting, there’s the smelling part. If you master the art of wine smell, it will make it easier for you to establish the kind of wine before tasting it. You can gather lots of information from the smell, and it’s quite pertinent. If you get the smell of rotten egg or boiled cabbage, it means that reduction was used to make the wine. Alternatively, if you get the smell of toffee or honey, it means that oxidation is undertaken in the process of winemaking.

Wine smells can be broken down into three categories, which are:

  • Type of Grape: Now that you all know about different grapes, judging the type of grape used to make the wine would be quite easy. You may feel herbal, fruity, or even floral aromas.
  • Baseline Flavours: These are the secondary kinds of flavors used to make a particular wine. You can smell of yogurt, bread, cheese rind, or sour cream.
  • Over Time-lapse: These aromas culminate over time and can vary from mushroom, tobacco, leather, vanilla, or cloves smells. You may get confused at first, but this won’t deny you the pleasure of tasting wine.

Tasting the wine:

To taste the wine, take a small sip first and hold it in your mouth for a few seconds. You can even slosh it around like mouthwash for the wine to reach the entire mouth. It may sound grouse, but no, it’s not! If it gives the right results, it’s worth it. Another technique that requires a bit of practice is drawing a small amount of air into the mouth and over the wine. Follow this without dribbling. It allows the aroma up into the nasal passages in the back of the throat for you to smell the wine again.

  • Your nose is a perfect tool to give you accurate clues about the wine. The taste should complement the smell and not contradict it. You should ask yourself whether the smell advertised correctly what the mouth consumed. You will find out that the nose is more accurate than your taste buds once you’ve tasted the wine.
  • Your Wine can be either sweet or sour like aspirin, mostly it depends. For a higher alcohol content or riper wine, the texture will be stronger towards the red color. Usually, In red wine, the presence of tannins also affects the composition of the wine.
  • The freshness of wine comes from its acidity. To enhance the sharpness of the wine, odorless acids are infused at the winery. You will know your wine is acidic if your mouth waters.

To conclude the wine tasting process, you can either swallow or spit the wine out. What you need to observe is how long the taste stays in your mouth. For a bottle of great wine, the flavor will remain in your mouth for long.

Reaching your conclusion

After going through all the swirling, smelling, and tasting of wine, you would have probably concluded the type of wine you like or what doesn’t make your day. Think about the overall impression of the wine aftertaste. There are various questions you will need to ask and answer yourself according to the experience you had throughout the wine tasting process. Was the taste strong or quickly fade later on? Did the smell marry the flavor in your palate? Were you be able to distinguish between the various components like fruit, acidity, alcohol, and tannins.

To relish a heavenly wine taste, all the components need to complement each other and find harmony from your nose to your palate. All that matters is you had that feeling of eternal bliss while tasting wine for the first time. At the end of your tasting, you can always write down funny wine tasting notes to describe your sensations, subjective comments, or perceptions.

Choosing the Right Roof for Your Home – A User Guide

If you have recently looked at your roof and decided that it’s time for a change, you might be considering the option of having a new roof installed or carrying out a major repair or renovation. Since home roofs typically go decades without being replaced, homeowners can feel a bit clueless about the modern roofing options that are available because they haven’t shopped for a roof in so long, if ever. If that sounds like your current predicament, you’ve stumbled onto the right guide because below we’ll be discussing all of the fundamentals that you’ll need to know in order to start heading in the right direction with your roof comparison.

Choose the Right Roofing Company

Before you start researching the various types of roofs you can buy, it’s best to go ahead and decide who you’re going to hire to remove your old roof and install the new one. Try to opt for a contractor or company that has been doing business for a while and has plenty of positive reviews. You never want to trust your roofing installation in the hands of a questionable or newly established brand because there could be serious financial and liability-related consequences if anything goes wrong.

According to Semper Solaris, a leading roofing company in Southern California, the quality of the installation will directly determine how long the roof will last and whether it will need premature maintenance in the near future. They’ve been working in the roofing industry for more than two decades and have performed countless roofing, HVAC, and solar installs, so their opinion that installation quality is just as important roof selection is a valid one that’s worthy of consideration.

Consider All Costs & Risks Involved

The roofing installer that you choose will have one of the biggest impacts on the overall cost of your new roof. Dealing with a reputable company will ensure that you’ll be given a fairly accurate quote estimate based on the size of your home, the total square footage of the roof space that needs to be installed, and the kind of roofing materials you select.

Comparing multiple quotes is an advisable step, but don’t let the price be your only criteria. Selecting a roofing installer or material based solely on the fact that they have the lowest price is a surefire way to have a low-quality roof installed on your home.

It’s also important to confirm that your chosen roofing installer is adequately licensed and insured. If they’re not, and an injury or property damage occurs during the project, you could be held liable for the resulting expenses. This is generally a non-issue because being licensed and insured is a standard industry prerequisite, but it’s still worthwhile to double-check, particularly if you’re dealing with a newly established team of laborers.

Select the Right Materials

While you may like the look of certain materials, it’s possible that they might not be ideal for or compatible with your home architecturally. Generally, lightweight materials are more universally applicable, whereas heavier roofing types like slate or tiles represent a significant weight burden on the structure of your home. In fact, a slate roof can weigh anywhere from 800 to 1,500 pounds.

Take the time to learn the pros and cons of each material that you’re comparing. This is yet another reason why you should only deal with a reputable roofing installer, as you can be sure that they know what they’re doing and aren’t going to install incompatible materials on your roof. In fact, they should be able to help you decide which materials would be best suited for your roof based on its shape, size, slope, and the design style of the house below it.

Thoroughly reviewing the defining features of each material option will ensure that you don’t regret your selection later on. Likewise, it could help you discover futuristic new roofing materials such as solar roofs and extended-life asphalt shingles.

Compare the Durability & Maintenance Requirements of Different Shingle Types

Nobody can tell you what kind of roof shingle looks the best in your mind, but shingles do vary in their known durability and maintenance requirements, so those are the objective attributes that you can compare based on research. The two most popular kinds of roof shingles on the market are asphalt and metal. Other common material types include concrete, coal & tar, clay, and aluminum. In fact, there are at least 19 different kinds of roofing shingles that you can take into consideration during your comparison.

The 5 most durable kinds of roofing materials are steel, aluminum, clay, slate, and 30-year asphalt. If you’re after the sweet spot between price and durability, your comparison should probably be between aluminum and asphalt. Concrete and slate are more durable, but like steel, they’re also very heavy, so those materials should only be used on larger homes that have strong supporting structures.

While the best roofing contractor will have a designated structural engineer that they can consult with, if you’re spearheading the project yourself, then that’s definitely a consultation that you’d want to schedule. Installing a structurally unsafe roof is one of the costliest and most dangerous mistakes a homeowner can make, as it could lead to significant property damage or injury and leave you with a pile of burdensome liabilities.

Opt for a Roofing Style That Complements Your Home’s Design

Finally, it’s important to base your roof selection on the existing design theme of your home in order to present the need for additional renovations and upgrades. Many homeowners will opt to paint the exterior of their home after a roofing project just to take care of any minor blemishes and add a fresh look to accompany the new roof. Still, beyond painting, you don’t want to feel obligated to change the entire architectural style of your home just to match your roof.

You can use a roofing software to calculate the exact measurements and graphically compare roof styles against a backdrop photo of your home. That way, you can drag and drop design styles until you see one that looks like it would match your home. Once you have a style in mind and you know your roof measurements, you can contact local roofing companies to start comparing detailed quotes.

Consult with Roofing Experts Before Making Your Decision

It’s important to note that no internet guide can substitute the services of a roofing professional. The advice given in this guide is meant to steer you in the right direction, but your actual decision will come down to the services that are available in your area.

As a good rule of thumb, it’s wise to speak with 2-3 roofing companies in your area before you decide who to go with, as you want to give them a chance to compete for your business, and you also want to gather as much advice as you can in the initial planning stage.

Finally, before you initiate a consultation, it would be wise to write down a list of questions that you’re going to ask. That way, you’ll get the most possible value out of the free consultation period that many roofing companies offer, as opposed to aimlessly wandering through the conversation with no particular goal in mind.

How To Achieve Better Bokeh

Bokeh is the blurry part of an image. It is one of the best effects in photography and is often used but still, not as much as it should. Since your bokeh is the blurry part of an image, it keeps the clear part of the photo in good focus and makes it more noticeable. In fact, bokeh makes the most outstanding effect in photography. However, to achieve that, you have to know how to make one perfectly.

Here are four things you can do to improve your bokeh:

Create your own custom bokeh

This is the first thing to try – creating your own bokeh. In any case, photographers have been doing this for ages.

The main way to do this is to make a cutout in any shape that you fancy. You will then place this cutout on your camera lens such that when you take the photo, the opaque parts of the cutout block the light in the right places.

Preferably, use a black paper to make the cutout. You can always start with the simplest bokeh. Just cut a hole the size of a coin on the paper. Stick the paper in front of the lens and when you take your shot, the part blocking the light will be your bokeh. It will be just perfect.

After you have had some practice with simple circles, rectangles and so on, go for shapes that are more complex.

Use the right lens

This is about the choice of the aperture. They come in two types mostly. Cheaper cameras come with octagonal apertures, which produce bokehs in the same shape. Costlier cameras have more blades or curved blade apertures and they give circular bokehs. If you have good budget to buy quality bokeh lens to add to your camera, you can expect to have the best possible bokeh for your photos.

Create a relationship between focus image and the bokeh

This requires you to be a bit creative, but the effect will be worth all the effort. The best bokeh is when the blurred image is related to the image in focus. For example, a goalkeeper standing with the ball with the net in the blurred background makes a striking effect.

A car in sharp focus looks much better with a big truck in the blurred part of the photo. The reason for this is that there is an interaction, especially when you take the photo of the car on the road. The bokeh effect will be much better if the focus and the blurred images are related.

Depth of field adjustment

Even if the background is out of focus, you still want to be able to tell what is in the blurred part of the picture. It is best to aim for a great field of depth. It is all about just how much of the photo is out of focus. Do not make the mistake of using a low value aperture.

Such has the effect of blurring a large part of the image. Since you just want to keep a small part of the photo blurred, you should use a high aperture value. Likewise, do not go for the blurriest background that you can make. The best bokeh is achieved when you can tell what the blurry objects in your photo are.

30 Orchard Street, New York, NY, 10002
Exhibition November 13 2019 – January 19, 2020

Artist Q&A and Documentary Screening: Saturday November 16, 4 for 4:30pm at Olsen Gruin

Olsen Gruin is pleased to present High Society, an exhibition of new works by Australian photographic artist, Leila Jeffreys. Her second solo exhibition since 2017, High Society will be on view at Olsen Gruin from November 13, 2019 until January 19, 2020.

Revisiting the world of the Budgerigar – the subject of her first solo exhibition some nine years ago – Leila Jeffreys’ High Society includes her signature large format portraits and sees her exploring new territory. Working with over 300 budgerigars in a studio High Society reveals a beautiful society of birds through still photography and three panel video art.

Acclaimed for her empathetic artistic vision and intuitive approach, Leila Jeffreys has again captured a vivid sense of personality in her feathered subjects. Each work forges an emotional and sympathetic bond with the audience as Leila Jeffreys establishes parallels between the ‘flock’ and our human concept of ‘community’; a commentary on our need to preserve wildlife societies and their homes.

“There exists a symbolic relationship between birds and trees,” says Leila Jeffreys. “Their survival depends on each other. We depend on them. High Society serves as a visual reminder to leave wild places for these other societies to enjoy, as well as our own.”

Leila Jeffreys (b. 1972) was born in Papua New Guinea and raised in Perth, Australia. Thanks to her adventurous parents she spent much of her childhood travelling and grew up surrounded by wildlife and forest both in Australia and abroad. This sparked her interest in the natural world. Jeffreys works with conservationists, ornithologists and bird sanctuaries to separate her charismatic subjects from their natural surroundings and photograph them with a high degree of technical skill. She is an exhibiting artist with gallery representation in Sydney, London and New York. Her work has also been featured in the iconic Bergdorf Goodman department store windows in New York City. Her book Birdland was launched at Australia’s National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. A documentary titled Bird Nerd: the Art of Leila Jeffreys will debut on the film festival circuit mid-2019 ahead of its television premiere on the ABC later this year. The film is written and directed by Walkley Award winner Poppy Stockell and was commissioned by ABC Arts.
