CLEOPATRA OF CULTURE

Fine Artist Dimitra Milan Shapes the Next Generation of Social Sales-Womanship

In a generation filled with unabashed selfies, Dimitra Milan stands apart.

An art prodigy who has gained international recognition after being discovered at the tender age of 15, Milan has amassed an impressive following of eager-to-buy audiences who are apt to discover the next big thing.

A celebrated fine artist, her unique signature style reveals highly structured and figurative compositions that unravel an entire world before us. Like a map, the work guides us through a multilayered mystery that is both alluring and untamed. Milan’s work shifts in time and space and requires close attention when unearthing the dramatic effect of her imagination.

The vast catalog of her work has been sold in nine different galleries across the U.S and Europe, reaching over $1M in sales within her very first professional year.

“I’m inspired to paint beauty and to bring more beauty into this world. The world desperately needs more light and truth. I hope my art inspires people to follow their own dreams and pursue their passions. I want my art to touch a deep place in people and bring them into a higher mindset.” —Dimitra Milan

As a new generation of Millennial art collectors enter the scene, they are determined to turn the stereotype of salesmanship squarely on its head.

Historically, collectors bought work at auction or through art galleries. Still, the marketplace is quickly moving online, empowering a digital generation of art buyers quick to pick up pieces through PayPal. Online communication makes buyers instantly privy to what was once a private process, connecting artists directly with customers, which millennials prefer.

This is the matrix of Milan’s mission.

As part of the next generation of artists sharing their work on social media, Milan has built a global fanbase while her sought-after paintings have resided in private collections all over the world.

As a young entrepreneur with vision and a pioneering spirit, Milan bucked tradition to work directly with collectors through social media where she grew her Instagram and Facebook followings, created online events, and worked with private collectors while instituting a print program.

Fully embracing the financial success of independent autonomy, her plans now include the creation of virtual interactive commissions, live studio streaming, and building a social platform for other independent artists to grow their own social businesses.

Independence has proved successful as Dimitra Milan’s sales have quadrupled, and her work has enjoyed a wider international audience of auctions and appreciation.

Born into a family of established artists, Dimitra developed her style from a very young age at the Milan Art Institute, founded by her parents Elli and John Milan. From oil techniques to contemporary mixed media, Dimitra’s skill set grew along with her desire to paint. The artist then started homeschooling so she could dedicate her free time to improving and exploring her creative talent. It proved to be time well-spent because after finishing high school early, she started painting full time. The Milan’s teenage daughters — Dimitra, Dafni, and Dalia — are all accomplished artists in their own right, and collectively, their work has sold to collectors in Saudi Arabia, the United Emirates, Australia, Japan, and throughout Europe. The family members are all active on social media, where Dimitra has more than 120K Instagram followers and a store on Pinterest.

Although the next generation may never return to the foundational media the older generation used, new roads often lead to undiscovered lands. A perfect setting for the whimsical and surreal world Milan creates where anything is possible, and fearless subjects harmoniously coexist.

NYBG – The Orchid Show

The popular orchid exhibition at The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) returns for its 18th year with The Orchid Show: Jeff Leatham’s Kaleidoscope. Just 20 minutes from midtown Manhattan, visitors will see thousands of orchids on dramatic display in dazzling creations by lifestyle icon and floral designer to the stars Jeff Leatham.

On view February 15 through April 19, 2020, Leatham’s captivating designs and installations will transform each gallery of the exhibition in NYBG’s historic Enid A. Haupt Conservatory into a different color experience, like a turn of a kaleidoscope.

The award-winning artistic director of the Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris, Leatham was knighted in 2014 with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres—the highest honor for artists and others who have made a significant contribution to French culture. Leatham also has studios at the Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center and the Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills. His clients include Cher, Dolly Parton, Tina Turner, Oprah Winfrey, the Kardashians, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. His publications—Flowers by Jeff Leatham, Flowers by Design, and Jeff Leatham: Visionary Floral Art and Design—remain best-selling design books worldwide.

Jeff Leatham has been creating a sensation with his floral installations since he began his career in 1995. His work is a combination of his love for flowers and passion for design. Using shape, color, and simplicity, his creations are dramatic, bold, unforgettable statements that are always an integral part of the setting.

Arches of hanging orchids of deliberate hues will deliver a kaleidoscopic tunnel effect and, along with other design surprises, bring thrilling and hypnotic sensory delights to the 2020 Orchid Show. Leatham is working with horticulturists from NYBG, including Senior Curator of Orchids Marc Hachadourian, to assemble orchids from its collections as well as from some of the finest growers in the world. Orchids of seemingly every conceivable shape and provenance, including rare and iconic specimens, will be on display in breathtaking configurations.

“Color is the first and most important aspect of my work, always,” Jeff Leatham said when describing his creations for The Orchid Show. “I want every gallery to be a different color experience for visitors as they move through them, like looking into a kaleidoscope. I loved kaleidoscopes as a child. You start dreaming as you look through one. People have seen the interiors of the Conservatory already, but with this exhibition, I want them to look through them like never before.”

During Orchid Evenings on select dates throughout the run of The Orchid Show: Jeff Leatham’s Kaleidoscope, adults 21 and over can experience the exhibition at night with music, cash bars, and light bites. Advance ticket purchase is recommended to guarantee admission to these signature events.

At NYBG Shop, Orchid Show visitors may select from thousands of top-quality orchids, from exotic, hard-to-find specimens for connoisseurs to elegant yet easy-to-grow varieties for beginners available for purchase, along with orchid products and books.

How to Save Money with Electric Cars

Last year, over 200,000 electrically powered vehicles were purchased in the United States of America, and most consumers give one simple explanation for making the switch from gasoline powered cars; money.

Though electric cars can have a slightly higher sticker price than their internal combustion engine counterparts, they can offer drivers huge savings on fuel costs and maintenance. As vehicle charging stations have become more numerous, and home vehicle charging options have gotten better than simply sticking a plug in an outlet, electric vehicles have become more and more popular with consumers.

Here we are going to look at some of the ways that drivers are saving money by using electric cars, and how you can join in and start saving yourself some money too.

At a Cost-Per-Mile, Gas-Guzzlers Cannot Compete

The biggest saving that drivers of an electric car make is on the cost of fuel per mile. Even the most frugal internal combustion engines cannot begin to compete with fuel efficient electric vehicles.

Some electric car manufacturers offer free charging for their vehicles at selected charging stations, so gas powered cars have no chance to match those savings, but even electric vehicles that are charged at home or at charging stations that require payment offer drastically lower fuel costs. For electric vehicles, the cost per mile is often measured in cents, not dollars.

Less Maintenance, Fewer Trips to the Mechanic

Another area that driving an electric car can save you money over a regular gas-guzzler is in the cost of regular maintenance and trips to your mechanic.

The internal combustion engine is incredibly complex with hundreds of moving parts that require adequate lubrication, and the fuels and oils it uses need topping up and fresh filters. The drivetrain that powers electric vehicles couldn’t be more different, with most electric motors only having one moving part. This drastically reduces maintenance costs, and the possibility that one small part will fail on your car and keep you stuck indoors while a mechanic fixes your engine.

You Can Generate Your Own Electricity at Home

Imagine if you owned an oilfield. You would be much less concerned about the cost of fuel if you could just fill up your own car from your own supply of gasoline.

Many owners of electric cars are doing something similar to this by generating and storing their own electricity at home with solar or wind power and home battery packs. This electricity is essentially free, after the cost of the equipment, saving owners of electric cars even more money.

Some electricity suppliers will even offer their customers discounted electricity rates when it is used to recharge electric vehicles, saving them even more money.

The price of gasoline is constantly increasing, as well as the cost to the environment that gas-guzzling, carbon-emitting cars produce. When you take a look at all the savings that driving an electric car has to offer, as well as the environmental benefits, it is easy to see why hundreds of thousands of American drivers are now making the switch to electric vehicles.

KANYE WEST – Mary

Kanye West will bring his original opera Mary to New York City’s famed David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center. Directed by Vanessa Beecroft, Mary was first staged at Art Basel Miami, and follows Nebuchadnezzar, West’s first opera, which premiered last month at the Hollywood Bowl.

Mary is an original opera, based on the biblical story of the miraculous events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ. The Books of Matthew and Luke recount the story of Mary, who was divinely chosen by God to bring forth the Messiah.

West’s Mary brings together elements from different worlds – including opera, fine art, modern dance, and gospel music – to create a new visual interpretation and innovative performance structure. Mary is performed by the Sunday Service collective, a ministry formed in January of 2019. With the Sunday Service collective working alongside a cast of professional opera singers, Mary represents an innovative interpretation of West’s own music, gospel standards, and traditional opera alike.

The Score – Bulletproof

Gold-certified and critically acclaimed LA-based, New York-born rock band The Score—Eddie Anthony and Edan Dover—have unleashed a brand new single entitled “Bulletproof” featuring Xylø.

Check out “Bulletproof” ft Xylø HERE via Republic Records.

The song’s release comes in tandem with the release of Netflix’s highly anticipated new film 6 Underground starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by Michael Bay. “Bulletproof” is featured as the end title song in the film and three additional songs from The Score are also featured including “Glory,” “Legend” and “The Fear.” 6 Underground is in select theaters now and on Netflix.

Buttressed by percussive distortion, wild horns, and finger-snaps, the track places the group in the center of a vibrant vocal crossfire with Xylø. Tempering pop ambition and raw edge, her voice rings out over modulation on the instantly unshakable hook, “I wish that I was bullet proof.” It’s an anthem worthy of the group’s growing catalog of bold genre-defiant bangers.

About the tune, the band commented, “We wanted to write a song that captured the feel of the movie while still being us. We felt having our friend Xylø sing the chorus would add a new dimension to the song, while still being authentic to us as a band.”

It paves the way for much more to come from The Score in 2020.

Get ready.

New York-born and Los Angeles-based duo The Score stand out as a fiery genre-defying phenomenon, incinerating the lines between rock, pop, indie, and electronic. Powered by ubiquitous anthems such as “Oh My Love,” “Legend,” and gold-selling “Unstoppable,” the boys have racked up nearly 2.2 Billion cumulative streams worldwide over the course of two EPs—Unstoppable and Myths & Legends—and a 2017 full-length debut, ATLAS. As they ignited venues across North America, in addition their music has been used in campaigns for Jeep, NBA, and beyond.
6 Underground introduces a new kind of action hero. Six individuals from all around the globe, each the very best at what they do, have been chosen not only for their skill, but for a unique desire to delete their pasts to change the future. The team is brought together by an enigmatic leader (Ryan Reynolds), whose sole mission in life is to ensure that, while he and his fellow operatives will never be remembered, their actions damn sure will.

“Technology always sets out to solve a problem, and that’s what inspired Daily Bonfire,” explains canna-tech entrepreneur and HelloMD co-founder Mark Hadfield. “In an effort to ‘normalize’ cannabis, the trend has been to downplay the recreational benefits of cannabis and showcase its medicinal properties. Now that we’ve achieved mainstreamification, Daily Bonfire is here to bring cannabis back to its playful roots by celebrating the plant’s monumental contributions to pop culture, science and history. We’ve also designed the app to incentivize users to play an active role in combating today’s illicit retail marketplace while giving back to organizations that are tirelessly working to right the wrongs of prohibition,” says Hadfield.

Available for download on iPhones at the Apple App store for (Android will soon follow in 2020), each Daily Bonfire game begins with a collective vote to donate 5% or 50% of the winnings to one of three non-profits:  ACLU, NORML, or MAPS.  The comedic host then challenges players to test their cannabis IQ by answering a round of 12 multiple choice questions with each successful response moving players to the next question. The final winner(s) can decide to immediately cash out or visit a local partner dispensary where their Daily Bonfire dollars unlock exclusive discounts.

“I hella look forward to hosting Daily Bonfire each week,” says local Bay Area host Ngaio Bealum, who also regularly hosts High Times events and has appeared on “The Sarah Silverman Program.” “I get to encourage consumers to get lit and profit and learn compelling facts about cannabis.  Who knew that it was the first product ever sold over the internet in 1971… between MIT and Stanford computer science students? Weed makes you smarter. It’s science.”

Daily Bonfire was recently named one of the “Top 5 cannabis brands to dominate 2020” by Merry Jane.

GOLD SEASHELL

By Mark Quinn

Quinn states “ ‘The Big Wheel Keeps on Turning’ is the story of the planet and everything that lives on it. It is our lives in time. Like the spiral of a shell, the world is in constant revolution.” He further says “… To me they are actually sculptures of the space-time continuum. By that I mean you have the rings on the outside of the shell, which look and act like the rings of a tree – showing the past of the object – and at the same time, the rings are to me like a map of the turning of the world. Then, on the front surface, you have the highly polished, reflective part, which is of course always in the present moment. This surface is always reflecting the now, and so together the form of the shell is like a found structural diagram of how the present becomes the past.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Marc Quinn is internationally recognized and one of the leading artists of his generation. He is best known for exploring the relationships between art and science, the human body, and perceptions of beauty; elementary questions of the universe relevant to mankind. He rose to prominece in the early 1990s among the Young British Artists (YBAs) who shook up London’s contemporary art scene with their conceptual works. the same time, the rings are to me like a map of the turning of the world.

Then, on the front surface, you have the highly polished, reflective part, which is of course always in the present moment. This surface is always reflecting the now, and so together the form of the shell is like a found structural diagram of how the present becomes the past.” Quinn has exhibited in many important group and solo shows internationally including: the Tate Gallery in London, Fondazione Prada in Milan, Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Musée Oceanographique in Monaco, Multi media Art Museum in Moscow, and The Yorkshire Sculpture Garden in the UK, among many others.
