7 Ways to Stay Positive When You Have a Difficult Health Condition

When you’re living with a chronic illness, a setback or interruption can be incredibly frustrating. It can be hard to focus on the good when you have a flare-up, you’re too tired to do your daily activities, or you feel like you’re back to square one. You’re allowed to feel frustrated, but it’s essential that you get right back on that horse and keep staying positive with these tips.

1. Count Your Blessings

When you have a difficult to manage health condition, it can be hard to see the positives. However, people with chronic illnesses are more able to cherish the small things in life, are typically more motivated to achieve their goals, and are more understanding people. Plus, people with chronic illnesses tend to make better friends that really care about your well-being.

2. You’re a Superhero, If You Really Think About It

Whether you have a chronic illness with prominent flare-ups or you have an embarrassing health condition that causes excessive sweating, you’re managing your illness despite it. For example, people with hyperhidrosis are still looking out for the best deodorants for excessive sweating, and Fibromyalgia patients are still staying active despite their pain. Your resilience is admirable.

While you may not feel like a superhero at your worst, most people could handle what you’re going through at your best. You’re strong, so give yourself some credit for your hard work!

3. Remember: You’re Not Failing

Sometimes an unexpected flare-up of your complex health condition will cause you to take a step back, cancel plans, or take time off school. It can be challenging to take a break while you’re trying to reach your goals, and you may become self-critical when you have to. However, setbacks do not equal failure. You’re human, and sometimes humans just need to survive the day.

4. Find Something The Makes you Happy

It’s important to find something you enjoy that can keep you busy while you wait out the flare-up. Sometimes, there isn’t anything you can do at this moment, but waiting around for the difficult time to stop won’t make it any easier. So instead, start up that hobby that you always wanted to try, but couldn’t, or put your frustration and anger into music, exercising, or creating art.

If you’re in pain or your illness prevents you from doing the thing you love, try something else. This blog post that centers on helping people with chronic illnesses find hobbies can help.

5. Do Something Small for a Loved One or Stranger

When we feel down, it can help to give to someone that needs our help to put our own pain into perspective. That doesn’t mean you should go to a volunteer shelter and compare yourself to someone else because that won’t make you feel any better. However, simply helping a person who needs you can help you feel more positive and give you the strength to tackle tomorrow.

6. Break Down Tasks Into Manageable Steps

After a setback, you may start to get overwhelmed by tasks that now feel out of your grasp, even if they were perfectly manageable in the past. Don’t beat yourself up for this change because you can adjust how you tackle these tasks. While you’re recovering, you don’t have to keep the same busy pace as you used to, but that doesn’t always mean you can’t do anything.

Break your to-do list down into smaller steps and take frequent breaks to maintain your pace. It’s a lot easier to cross off “wash the dishes, wipe the counters” than “clean the house.”

7. Know That the Best is Yet to Come

When managing a chronic illness, it can be hard to see what’s on the other side of a flare-up, but just like the last time this happened, you were able to recover. Even if you didn’t recover fully, you still were able to make your situation more manageable. Keep on believing you can conquer your worst moments because you can, and you will. After this, better moments await you.

WonderWorks Panama x Good Vibrations

WonderWorks Panama City Beach has an array of exhibits that help educate people about science. The newest exhibit on earthquakes, called Good Vibrations, opens June 11, 2021. Good Vibrations will spotlight Tuckaleechee Caverns, and how they document seismic activity around the world. The new exhibit was a topic request from educators, so it seemed appropriate that they also name the exhibit.

“We are happy to offer this new exhibit about earthquakes, which was a request by teachers,” said Michael Walsingham, general manager of WonderWorks Panama City Beach. “People will have a great opportunity to learn about seismic activity, along with where and how it’s measured.”

The Tuckaleechee Caverns are home to the most sensitive seismic station on Earth. It detects any and all tectonic movement anywhere in the world. If a country is testing a nuclear weapon or there is an earthquake, it has that information within seconds. Once it does, within 300 of a millisecond, it relays that important information directly to the U.S. Military; Vienna, Austria and Geneva, Switzerland. The information is collected 24/7 and is crucial to national security, as well as being able to provide earthquake information.

The exhibit, Good Vibrations will help share the importance of the Tuckaleechee Caverns and what they are doing in monitoring seismic activity. The information in the exhibit meets the educational standards on earthquake and seismic activity, and is one of WonderWorks’ many STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) related learning exhibits. The exhibit name was suggested by teachers.

“This is going to be a great summer, with families taking the time to include learning activities along with having fun,” added Walsingham. “At WonderWorks, we are where learning and fun come together, with the whole family enjoying their time here.”

WonderWorks Panama City Beach offers many STEM-related exhibits and activities all year long. There are also demonstrations, activities, virtual learning labs, science fair partnerships, homeschool days, and more. To get more information about the WonderWorks STEM programs, visit the site at: https://www.wonderworksonline.com/panama-city-beach/stem-programs/.

To see a full list of the COVID-19 safety measures in place at WonderWorks Panama City Beach, visit the site at: https://www.wonderworksonline.com/panama-city-beach/covid-19.

The interactive indoor amusement park offers STEM-focused activities for all ages. There are over 100 hands-on activities that are focused on the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math. Some of the exhibits will include a bubble room, Professor Wonder’s adventure, interactive sandbox, illusion art gallery, and xtreme 360 bikes. Tristen Aquatic Flowers image given by Ken Weinstein and Big Hassle for use by 360 MAGAZINE.

Tristen x Aquatic Flowers

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Tristen shares a beautifully animated video for the song “Cool Blue” from her soon-to-be-released fourth studio album, Aquatic Flowers, arriving this Friday via Mama Bird Recording Co. The album was produced and recorded with her husband, bandmate, and occasional writing partner, Buddy Hughen, at their Nashville home studio. To make the video, Tristen edited the profound animation by Academy Award-nominated animator and film director Jimmy Murakami (The Snowman) that she discovered when searching through archives of public domain film footage. She found the film and realized that it perfectly portrayed what she was trying to say in the song.

“When I watched Murakamis animation, I immediately knew I had stumbled upon a gift,” says Tristen. “A fortuitous linking of two stories that must have hit some chord of truth at least the two of us thought so. And lucky for me, Murakami’s animation places my song into a broader context of life and how we all give and receive eventually to our own certain demise the life cycle of love within the cycle of life.

“‘Cool Blue’ is a love song about a relationship on the brink of going to the next level of intimacy or bust. Its the story of a wildly emotive woman in love with a statue,” Tristen continues. “Its a passionate, near-hysterical reaction to a cool and unfeeling partner. I was channeling Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields, I suppose, hopelessly analyzing the failures on both sides. You cant, as you once thought, change someone. Its left as hopeless as that.”

Earlier in the month, Tristen released “Wrong With You,” a song that is classic Tristen in that it deals with something deeply emotional while being wrapped in an indelibly sophisticated pop melody. “Wrong With You” was joined by a compelling official music video directed by Joshua Shoemaker (Alabama Shakes, Erin Rae), streaming now at Tristen’s official YouTube channel.

Aquatic Flowers was heralded in March with the release of the album’s first single, “Complex.” The song was accompanied by Tristen’s self-directed and edited official music video, guest-starring Vanessa Carlton, Stefanie Drootin, Kristy Benjamin, Alise Grysen, and Alyssa Milano. In April,Tristen released “Athena.” Co-written with Lera Lynn, “Athena” finds the Nashville-based Tristen empathizing with the goddess of wisdom and strength who is too often a marginalized female character. It is a deeply felt concept that one can also dance to, thanks to the song’s jangly major chord garage-pop groove.

Dreamer Boy x Sweatshirt Video

Today, slowplay / Harvest Records’ Nashville singer/songwriter Dreamer Boy has released his next video for the track “Sweatshirt” off of his recent album All The Ways We Are Together. This tender, emotive video showcases Dreamer Boy (Zach Taylor) on a split screen, one side in color and the other in black and white. Through these contrasting visuals, the viewer experiences two different ways of processing the same set of emotions. Today’s release follows last month’s video for “Best of Me.”

Arriving in April, All The Ways We Are Together is Dreamer Boy’s second full-length album. The record is a hazy, sentimental collection of songs about love and meaningful relationships, and its release date, Earth Day, was carefully chosen. Per Zach Taylor -the artist, who grew up everywhere from Washington to Texas to Alabama, behind the Dreamer Boy name-the set is meant to reflect on the ways we relate to one another, but also the effects we have on the world.

Around the Earth Day release of All The Ways We Are Together, Dreamer Boy created a microsite where fans could stream the album and contribute directly to planting trees. Through a partnership with One Tree Planted, 1,500 trees have been planted from this initiative.

Additionally, Zach hosted community Zooms with fans to discuss ways to give back and engage in a day of action on Earth Day. Zach and his friends participated in a local Nashville trash clean up, and by using the hashtag #allthewayswearetogether, fans could share their own community actions from all around the world. This follows sending seeds out with early merch orders to encourage fans to plant marigolds and watch them grow toward the album release.

The overarching theme behind all of these ideas was to use the album as a launching off point for people to connect directly with the planet and their own communities, both central themes in the underlying concept of All the Ways We Are Together.

“The songs are about the love we have for ourselves, the love we have for our friends, and the love we can show the environment around us,” Taylor explains.

All The Ways We Are Together follows a busy string of sunny singles released over the last year, including “Know You,” “Crybaby,” and “Don’t Be a Fool,” each of which appears on the record. These new tracks, as well as a string of late 2019 tour dates with Clairo, were warmly received by critics and fans alike, garnering praise from outlets like FADER (2021 artist to watch), Flaunt, and Clash, the latter of which said “Easier Said Than Done” pushed pop to “a sophisticated new realm.” Taylor was also recently featured in DORK Magazine who wrote that All The Ways We Are Together “embraces love in its most natural, authentic form.” Additionally, Taylor recently became one of the new faces of Tommy Jeans for Men.
