All Day Thumbsucker Revisited: History of Blue Thumb Records

From 1968-1978, Blue Thumb Records was one of music’s most most adventurous and imaginative record labels, with a far-ranging roster of cutting-edge acts and an unconventional visual sensibility. Nurturing an eclectic assortment of artists from a wide variety of genres, Blue Thumb embodied the restless creative spirit of the era in which it was born, reflecting the emerging attitude that albums were worthy of being taken seriously as artistic statements.

Blue Thumb’s expansive musical vision was anthologized on the 1995 label retrospective All Day Thumbsucker Revisited. Today, October 27, Verve Records/UMe is releasing the long-out-of-print collection, originally compiled by Gary Katz, known for his work with Steely Dan, in an updated two-CD edition on the eve of next year’s 50th anniversary of Blue Thumb’s founding. The first in a projected series of releases to celebrate the revered label, the CD set offers 32 vintage tracks spread across two discs, while the digital edition, due November 10, marks the first time this collection will be available as a digital download and for streaming. In showcasing Blue Thumb’s influential artist roster, the album also honors the iconoclastic musical vision of late label founders Bob Krasnow, who died on December 11, 2016, and Tommy LiPuma, who passed away on March 13, 2017. The album is available for purchase here: http://lnk.to/Thumbsucker2CD

Danny Bennett, President & CEO of Verve Label Group comments, “With the release of All Day Thumbsucker Revisited, we are so proud to honor Tommy LiPuma and Bob Krasnow by celebrating their Blue Thumb Records legacy and the incredible music they curated, all of which is well represented on this must-have collection.”

Liz Huett x “H8U”

Singer/songwriter Liz Huett has released her new single “H8U” via all digital retailers. The song was written by Huett and produced by Pretty Sister. Listen to the track on YouTube HERE

“This song was such a fun one to create and I’m really proud of its honesty,” says Huett.  “Sometimes the truth ain’t cute… but it’s songs like this that made me want to make music in the first place. I hope people enjoy it!”

“H8U” is the follow up to Huett’s debut single “STFU & Hold Me” which received rave reviews following its summer release. Huett was recently picked as one of Refinery 29’s “next generation music superstars”. The video for “STFU & Hold Me” was shot on a road trip and can be watched HERE

Huett grew up in Riverside, California, with her ear glued to the radio, listening to everything from pop acts like Tom Petty and Pink, to ’90s country superstars. Not long after she decided to move to Nashville to pursue her music career, she was hired as a backing vocalist for Taylor Swift, with whom she toured for three and a half years. With Swift’s blessing, she decided to come off the road and throw herself into writing her own music. Huett quickly lined up a publishing deal with Warner Chappell, began writing songs, and worked on developing her eclectic pop sound. Now signed to Interscope Records, Huett delivers her songs with a genuine vulnerability that makes her work appealingly relatable. Huett is currently working on her debut album.

“The song’s breezy acoustics make listeners feel that they are at the same beach Simpson is singing about, a classic case of showing instead of just telling, in more profound lyrics.” – Billboard

“Simpson has stepped away from his formerly synth- and bass-heavy dance pop and turned to breezy, Jack Johnson-esque acoustic beach pop.” – Rolling Stone

“…Simpson is not only about to shock everyone, but (most likely) become a playlist staple.” –NYLON

LA-based rock band Cody Simpson & The Tide premiere the video for their song “Waiting For The Tide,” on Billboard today. The entertaining and upbeat video perfectly captures the song’s optimistic energy and catchy hooks with the band dancing, laughing and enjoying the thrills of performing. PRESS HERE to watch.

“Waiting For The Tide” comes off the band’s new EP, Wave One, via Entertainment One (eOne). Pulling inspiration from surf music, rock music, and psychedelia to provide a vivid snapshot of a carefree summer, the EP perfectly encapsulates Venice Beach and the sun-kissed streets of Southern California where it was penned. Like its namesake, Wave One ebbs and flows between songs of surf rock with irresistible energy, to songs of breezy beats, provocative hooks, and even acoustic sixties-style call-and-response. PRESS HERE to listen.

Australian-born Cody Simpson has had an impressive career to date. His 2013 album Surfer’s Paradise featured collaborations with Ziggy Marley and Asher Roth and landed in the Top 10 of the Billboard Top 200. He toured Europe and the U.S. as direct support for Justin Bieber and along the way, he performed on television programs including The Today Show, Live! with Kelly, Late Late Show with James Corden, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. For the 2015 World Games, Cody partnered with The Coca-Cola Company, Founding Partner of Special Olympics, to record a unified song titled “Reach Up,” and carried the torch for Australia in the 2016 World Olympics in Rio. His latest album, Free (2015), exhibited a musical shift for Cody, and the singer-songwriter received critical acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, Billboard, Nylon, and MTV which said, “Cody’s getting ‘raw’ and ‘real’ on his latest effort.”

In many ways, Cody Simpson has been working towards the Tide for his entire career. “The reason behind the name was I wanted this body of work to be an audio replication of what the Tide is as an element of nature,” he leaves off. “During that one summer, I had so many revelatory experiences. I wanted to be an exemplar of the Tide’s flow. It was about taking people back to that primitive innocence and being able to appreciate that. Music is the best vehicle to do so.”

Be sure to catch Cody Simpson & the Tide at The Peppermint Club in Los Angeles on October 27.

New Footage — Mikaela Shiffrin

Overall World Cup champion returns to the slopes in advance of the 2017-18 onslaught.

Mikaela Shiffrin is confident that an off-season of suffering in the gym has put her in the shape of her life going into the coming season. And now she adds a new kind of training to the mix – indoor skiing.

Shiffrin won her first overall World Cup title last season and her fourth slalom World Cup adding to an already impressive CV, which includes Olympic gold and three world titles.

Shiffrin allowed Red Bull’s cameras to follow her around during an off-season which ranged from a trip to the races at Chantilly on the outskirts of Paris to an intense three-day training session indoors in Wittenberg, Germany– remarkably her first experience of skiing indoors.

Of the latter experience in the ski hall, she admitted: “It’s the strangest thing I’ve ever seen. We’re sleeping, eating and skiing all in the same building. I don’t know how to explain it. I don’t know why it seems so odd. You walk outside and it’s summer and you walk inside and it’s winter.”

But it was a chance to test her fitness regimen on what was effectively a 20-second slalom run.

Shiffrin is tipped to dominate the slalom again this season and is a potential candidate for the overall title. The first step in the long journey begins this weekend, with the world certainly fixated on the woman who ended last year on top.

Part 3: Inside Out in Germany – available today

Part 4: New peaks in Chile – available November 20
Previously:

Part 1: Summer Grind

“I have to go harder because somebody else out there is” Mikaela Shiffrin showcases her gains in the gym, through her intense two-a-day workouts in Park City, Utah.

Part 2: An American Girl in Paris

“Elegance is the name of the game here”. Though vacation days are rare for the World Cup champion, Mikaela Shiffrin found a few days this summer to explore Paris for the first time. Along with walking through the City of Love and being a tourist, she also served as host at the Grand Prix de Diane Longines horse race in Chantilly, France. She traded her ski helmet and boots for fancy hat and heels for the day.

Bilbao BBK Live Announces Gorillaz and The XX

Bilbao BBK has just unveiled the first two headliners for the 2018 festival: critically acclaimed The XX and Gorillaz. The festival will take place on Bilbao’s Kobetamendi Mountain in the heart of the Basque Country. Thousands of festival goers will be in attendance to witness a weekend spectacle of incredible music from 12-14 July, 2018.

The xx

The fascinating trajectory of London trio The xx began with the release of their debut album “xx” in 2009 via Young Turks/XL. What followed was a meteoric rise, which saw the band tour the world, headline festivals and be awarded the prestigious Mercury Prize. Since then they’ve produced two further records, including their last album “I See You” (2017) which reached number 1 in the UK and other European countries. Bilbao BBK Live will be an exclusive performance in Spain and Portugal.

Gorillaz

Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett’s Gorillaz, the world’s most successful virtual band, will return to Bilbao BBK Live in 2018! The group released their much anticipated new album “Humanz” this year which received widespread critical acclaim reaching #1 and #2 in the U.S. and U.K album charts respectively, and topping the iTunes chart in 60 plus countries around the world. On HUMANZ Murdoc, Noodle, Russel and 2D are – as always – joined by an impressive line-up of featured artists including Jehnny Beth (Savages), Danny Brown, Benjamin Clementine, Vince Staples, Popcaan, and Kali Uchis – and sees Gorillaz pushing boundaries once again.

Kailee Morgue x “Medusa”

The haunting video for Kailee Morgue’s viral song “Medusa”, which became the #2 track on Hype Machine just 2 weeks after it’s premiere and was selected Best Track of the Week” by New York Times, Line Of Best Fit, MTV, Coup de Main, and hit #2 on the Canadian viral chart on Spotify. “Medusa” originally premiered on Fader and was produced by CJ Baran [Melanie Martinez, Panic! At the Disco, Carly Rae Jepsen]. It is the first official release by Kailee Morgue.

About the video, Morgue says that she “wanted to show the vulnerability and desperation that radiates in the music… To express that emotion in my first video was a challenge for me but I couldn’t be happier at how it came out and hope the message comes across to my fans.”

The 19-year-old released a snippet of the song via her twitter account and it amassed over 100,000 likes overnight. Morgue’s melody and vocals in the track are hypnotic and heartfelt and the lyrics are powerful.

Morgue casts a spell with her music. The self-proclaimed introvert found solace in the works of musical powerhouses such as Stevie Knicks, Gwen Stefani, Pink Floyd, and Led Zepplelin. The 19-year-old tattooed, green-haired, anime-obsessed, gothic siren is destined to be a monumental voice of the generation.
