In an era where there seems to be a side-story of viral fame or leveraging online connections to rise to the top, 18-year-old high school student Bernard Jabs has carved his budding career out from pure authenticity. In Bernard Jabs’ first uploaded track, Gotta Get It, there is the obvious sound of his younger teenage voice, but within that sound is also the raw skill Bernard holds. His ability to channel the charisma of the music he grew up on and blend it with more current rap trends keeps Bernard circulating as one of the brightest new talents of a generation.

Growing up in Tifton, Georgia during part of the height of Southern rap, Bernard gravitated towards the star power of Lil Wayne. After seeing Wayne in the music video for “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy,” Bernard was entranced in the lifestyle – the cars, the girls, the money, the confidence. Bernard Jabs took to the culture surrounding southern rap and used that history to guide him towards the future.

Chicago’s South Side PRIDE Festival Recap

The goal of event was to bring Chicago Pride back to South Side (where it started) to support the scene’s queer crowd, community and overall spirit of the freedom to dance, consume music, and stand up for what you believe in. Chicago’s queer scene is more vibrant than ever- bustling with a new generation of artists, activists and voices carrying on the legacy of these South Side’s queer pioneers.

Red Bull announces the first Red Bull Presents show of 2019. Taking place Thursday, June 27th in Chicago, Red Bull Presents: Renaissance One will bring BbyMutha, TT the Artist, Kidd Kenn, Blu Bone as well as DJ Rae Chardonnay, DJ Hijo Pródigo and Professor-Wrecks to South Side venue The Promontory for a thrilling night. Renaissance One seeks to elevate these progressive artists and pay tribute to Chicago’s LGBTQ+ pioneers days before the city’s 2019 Pride celebrations on June 30th.

In 1970, following the Stonewall riots, a gay liberation organization formed at the University of Chicago and sponsored a dance at the South Side’s Coliseum Annex which would become the first-ever public lesbian and gay dance event (aside from Halloween drag balls already happening). Following the dance, these energized organizers led a campaign to make the Normandy on Rush Street Chicago’s first gay bar to secure a license and permit same-sex dancing. Flash forward to 2019 and, thanks to these early activists, Chicago’s queer scene is more vibrant than ever- bustling with a new generation of artists, activists and voices carrying on the legacy of these South Side’s queer pioneers.

Reflecting on the importance of that early dance event and its organizers, Red Bull Music’s Renaissance One is honored to be hosting this indoor & outdoor Pride celebration and bringing the celebrations – typically celebrated in the Boystown neighborhood – back to the South Side to support the scene’s queer crowd, community and overall spirit of the freedom to dance, consume music, and stand up for what you believe in.

The event will feature a stacked lineup of diverse and emerging talent that celebrates the region’s rich roots and aims to introduce fans to those that intend to continue the legacy. Featuring performances from BbyMutha, a TN rapper and mother of two known for her unique, sharp-tongued narratives; TT the Artist, a veritable jade-of-all-trades artist, songwriter and owner of female safe haven label, Club Queen Records; Chicago’s exciting queer teenage rap phenom Kidd Kenn and Chicago’s bi/pan/deity artist Blu Bone. The event will also feature DJ sets from three Chicago residents: DJ Rae Chardonnay, a queer promotor and advocate for the queer spectrum and black female empowerment, producer Hijo Pródigo of the FUTUREHOOD crew and the retro and house inspired Professor-Wrecks.

To commemorate the exciting event, Red Bull Music will also produce limited edition merchandise with Chicago streetwear brand High End Junkie, whose celebrity clientele includes Teyana Taylor, Iman Shumpert, Nick Cannon and more. The collaborative merch will be available exclusively at the venue once doors open for a limited time. Renaissance One will also feature visual identity and production from Chicago’s queer collective, VAM and celebrate the iconic styles of disco and soul modernized for a new audience. The event will be indoor and outdoor.

“The Machine Vol 1 is a compilation that embodies my work ethic. I got the nickname The Machine from my cousin, Az, because he noticed I’d make 6-7 songs each recording session and that I recorded everyday without fail. I decided to title a mixtape series after that name and give fans a variety of records that I’ve been working on leading up to my album,” said the rapper.

The Machine is undoubtedly one of the North Carolina’s best releases to date. He rides the elevator to the top of each song’s production with candid lyrics and addictive ad-lids

Moby Rich Our First Second EP

In celebration of their new project Our First Second EP out now, alternative pop duo Moby Rich reveal the video for their new song “Oil Spill” today—watch HERE!

Directed by Tim Oakley, the duo talks about the inspiration behind it, saying, “We wanted the video for ‘Oil Spill’ to be an Anchorman meets Tim and Eric vibe. We went for an idea that was crazy, quirky and satirical contrasting the dark vibe and subject matter of the song. We shot it with our buddy Tim Oakley. He did an amazing job of taking all the little things we did that day and piecing it together to make a really entertaining video.”

Our First Second EP follows their recent release “Sabotage,” as well as their 2018 breakout track “Yoko Ono,” which has almost 2 million Spotify streams to date and received praise from Annie Mac at BBC Radio 1, triple j, Noisey, The Line Of Best Fit and more. After joining BROODS on the Australian leg of their tour last month, the duo recently performed their first-ever headlining New York and Los Angeles shows.

LA two-piece Moby Rich turn melancholy song craft into bold, pop hooks and visuals. The pair—Maxwell Joseph and Connor Pledger—relocated to LA in 2015 from Indianapolis and Atlanta respectively in search of, well, anything. In a moment of synergy, Connor began attending open mic nights around the town in which Maxwell was living. The pair serendipitously met, began writing together, and realized an identifiable sound between the two them. Writing the majority of their tracks on acoustic guitar, they sing every song in unison, a sort of whole-is-greater-than-the-sum-of-parts attitude, which speaks volumes of their close, almost twin-like, friendship. The first insight into Moby Rich’s unique sound comes in the shape of their 2018 breakout hit, “Yoko Ono,” a melancholy pop banger that combines the euphoria of early MGMT with the laidback beat making of N.E.R.D, which was featured on their debut, Our First EP. Their new single, “Sabotage,” is a hands-aloft ode to fucking up royally; a cathartic anthem for a generation faced with obstacles. “Sabotage” sets the stage for Moby Rich’s second project Our First Second EP out now.

ALMA “Lonely Night” Music Video

Finnish pop powerhouse ALMA releases the video for ‘Lonely Night’, which is directed by Deni Cheng and produced by Tiistai.

The evocative visual tells the story of a young woman anticipating the arrival of her crush to a party, followed by the chaos and heartbreak that can come from caring for someone more than they care for you.

You can watch it here.

“The ‘Lonely Night’ music video was a super important project for me” Alma explains. “I told my story in the song and I wanted someone to make almost like a short movie out of it! I think we did great! My own character in the video is more like my own brain in real life telling me the reality but I always go with my heart end of the day! And sometimes we get hurt by it!”

‘Lonely Night’ is the next instalment from her highly anticipated debut album ‘Have You Seen Her?’ set for release in September 2019. The track is produced and written by ALMA and HitImpulse (Kygo, Ellie Goulding, Steve Aoki) who collaborated with her before for ‘Chasing Highs’ platinum single.

Part of a new wave of female powerhouses that have something to say, ALMA is forward thinking, engaged and opinionated on issues from women’s rights to body positivity and sexuality. Having worked extensively with her friends Charli XCX, Tove Lo, Zara Larson, Dua Lipa, and Halsey, ALMA  has spent the last few months writing and recording with Miley Cyrus. She has co-written two songs for Miley’s latest EP ‘She is Coming’, including female empowerment anthem ‘Mothers Daughter’ and ‘Cattitude’ ft. RuPaul.

She says of the experience: “Working with Miley has been a dream! The first time when we met we just clicked it was super easy and real!  It’s crazy how two people with such different backgrounds can have so many of the same thoughts and feelings. Sure we like to party but we also talk about the deep stuff and then we put all our experiences good and bad into songs together. I can’t wait for people to hear all the tracks we’ve made!”

ALMA is a force to be reckoned with, following her critically acclaimed EP “Dye My Hair” with platinum single “Chasing Highs”, smash track “Phases” FT French Montana (including an exclusive Charli XCX directed video) and her 2018 mixtape “Heavy Rules”; she has garnered over 350 million combined Spotify plays and topped iTunes charts around the world.

Debut album ‘Have You Seen Her?’ is set for release in September 2019 and is on track to continue her rise on the international pop stage.

After an incredible performance in Glastonbury last weekend (where she caught up with Miley Cyrus) Alma continues this summer with lots of festival appearances as well as with a headline European tour in autumn!

Six Ways to Cut Down on Alcohol

by Tara Yombor, LMHC and clinical director at Pathway to Hope, a Delphi Behavioral Health Group facility.

Social (moderate) drinking, binge drinking, alcoholism, tolerance, and dependence. This is the typical pattern of progression for drinking that leads someone to think of him or herself as needing to cut down on alcohol. Some might think they are prone to alcoholism. Within that progression, the time for someone to cut down on drinking is based on the individual’s idea of what is causing dysfunction and unmanageability in their life.

Why is it so easy for someone to become addicted to alcohol, and what does it mean to have
an alcohol use disorder?

First of all, alcohol does not have an adverse social stigma, which makes the dependence for it more likely, and the consumption of it more acceptable. Alcohol is typically used to celebrate happy events and sooth the sad events in life. Think about a celebration. What do most people imagine? Alcohol, champagne, and a “toast to the New Year!”

During times of mourning or stress, alcohol can be used to ease the emotional pain of a loss or as a stress reliever. Social (or moderate) drinking is seen as a normal and perfectly harmless way of socializing, relaxing, or a form of celebration.

A binge drinker is defined as a man who drinks more than four to six drinks in a two-hour period, and a woman who drinks more than four to five drinks in a two-hour period. Someone with alcohol use disorder is typically a person with a long-term addiction to alcohol. This person is typically unable to control how much they consume or when to stop drinking and spends a lot of time thinking about the next drink.

It can be easy for someone to transition from a social drinker to a binge drinker to having an
alcohol use disorder. A binge drinker is someone who has more than the above allotted
acceptable drinks in a short amount of time.

Someone who is a binge drinker or struggling with heavy alcohol use may find that people close to them begin to notice negative patterns of behavior during times of drinking. Friends and family may start to become worried about the person’s drinking patterns and negative outcomes that have begun to arise from their drinking. A person who begins to engage in
binge drinking may find themselves calling out of work the day after drinking due to a hangover; they may miss important deadlines, get into arguments with their loved ones, or lose track of daily responsibilities.

Tolerance for alcohol means that a person needs more and more alcohol to feel the desired effect than they previously would not have needed. Someone who has a pattern of binge drinking may find themselves drinking even more alcohol in a short time to feel drunk.

Once tolerance increases, the possibility of dependence increases. Dependence can be defined as relying on alcohol to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Essentially, a person is controlled by their need to ingest alcohol to feel “normal.”

During any of these stages of alcohol use, someone may feel the need to seek treatment. how to deal with withdrawal symptoms varies for each person based on how dysfunctional or unmanageable their life has become due to their drinking.

Here are six things you (or anyone) can do to cut down on alcohol. Most of these mean a change in behavior.

1. Acknowledge the problem – in order to stop the behavior, you must first acknowledge what the negative behavior is and make a conscious effort to commit to changing that behavior. Also, put the goal in writing and make a list of reasons why you want to cut back on drinking. For example, if the behavior is drinking too much during celebrations, you have to determine what “too much” means to you and, next, set a goal to decrease the amount you are drinking during celebrations.

2. Set a realistic goal for drinking alcohol – if you struggle with binge drinking, set a realistic, and achievable goal. The next time you’re out during a social event, make it a goal to cut back to three to four drinks in two hours instead of five to six. Or perhaps instead of going to a happy hour on Friday or Saturday night, pick one night to go out and stay in the other night. Cutting back by making realistic and achievable goals will keep you on track and make you feel better about the fact that you are keeping your goals.

3. Write it down – make sure to keep a journal of the times you drink, how much you drink, and any negative outcomes related to the times you drink (for example, drinking and falling down or making an inappropriate comment to a friend). By keeping a journal, you will hopefully be able to see patterns of behavior. You can also share this journal with someone you trust and ask them to look out for any patterns you may have missed.

4. Don’t keep alcohol in your house – it is easier to come home after a long day of work and pour a glass of wine rather than going out to the bar on a Wednesday when you may have other obligations at home such as taking care of a child. When you don’t have alcohol in the house, it eliminates the desire or temptation to drink.

5. Stay busy – by having non-alcohol related activities to engage in, you are more likely to say no to drinking, as you’ll want to be present for the activity. Do things that keep you active, such as riding a bike, hiking, going for a walk as the endorphins from engaging in exercise may eliminate the desire for alcohol.

6. Ask for support/Talk to someone – tell people you trust about your goals and ask them to help keep you accountable during times when you may be struggling or find yourself surrounded by temptation. Also, there are therapists who specialize in alcohol/substance use who you can talk to that can assist you with your goals and process through any underlying emotions that may be related to drinking.

Remember that the above tips may not work for everyone. Some people may be into the stage of alcohol tolerance and dependence. If you or someone you love is struggling with alcohol dependence, reach out for help from a professional or call a treatment center in your area. Alcoholism and dependence look different for everyone.
