bülow Unveils New Single

Today, alternative pop singer and songwriter bülow unveils a new single entitled “Revolver.” Listen to “Revolver” HERE via Republic Records and Universal Music Canada.

Regarding the track, she shared, I want people to feel empowered listening to it. You are as powerful as you want to be. I don’t wake up every day feeling my most confident self. No one does. I struggle with finding my footing and falling into a state of confidence every day where what people say or do doesn’t affect me. It’s something I work on every day, but I know that when I am that and I believe it, I’m not afraid of fucking up/falling on my face. That’s how I want to live. And that’s what I want people to feel when listening to ‘Revolver’.”

It arrives on the heels of her single “First Place.” The latter has already amassed 2.9 million Spotify streams and 287K views on the music video. Right out of the gate, it garnered widespread looks from ComplexOnes To WatchWonderland MagazineClashThe FADERAtwood MagazineSpindle, and more. VOGUE promised,Wherever she’s heading next, her runaway hits and the fans she’s gathered will be following her, and Billboard touted it as her strongest track yet.” Alfitude raved, bülow’s rise to stardom has been pretty meteoric to say the least, and The Interns predicted, bülow is going to be one this year’s breakout acts and ‘First Place’ is a good start.”

bülow nears HALF-A-BILLON cumulative streams to date, from four critically acclaimed EPs—Damaged Vol. 1 [2017], Damaged Vol. 2 [2018], Crystalline [2019], and The Contender [2019]. In addition, bülow has collaborated with everyone from Ty Dolla $ign and Mura Masa to Fall Out Boy and MadeInTYO.

Pandemic Pampering – How independent salons have fared compared to the huge franchise chains

There’s no denying that the pandemic has been tough on the hair and beauty industry.  Unfortunately, as great as technology is, it’s not yet possible to have a haircut or manicure online or by Zoom and, for salons, closed doors have meant that salons have been without income for several months.

A business built on touch

As restrictions begin to lift, there’s still no real normal for salons as many are operating at a reduction – sometimes up to 30% – in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines.  For salon owners, margins tend to be pretty tight and, many make between 5% and 6% on a full book – something which, for the moment, is simply not possible.  In the meantime, overheads such as rent, contracts and utility bills don’t go away.

Resuscitating salons post-pandemic

We’ve now reached a stage where our salons are open once again and it’s time to see how things have shaken out.  Historically, hair salons have managed to ride the wave of tough times extremely well – for example, during the 2008 recession, salons saw little change in their fortunes.  Salon owner, Wall-Innella said at that time, “People find the money.  They won’t pay the mortgage, but they’ll get their hair done”.

A recession is a time to tighten your belt but, what about a pandemic?  In the past, small, independent salons have tended to lose out during times of hardship and, so, let’s take a look at how the pandemic has impacted on independents vs larger chain salons:

David and Goliath

By December 2020, 4,578 hair and beauty salons closed for good in the UK due to the pandemic and the early signs are that the majority of these were small independents – and there are a couple of reasons for this:

Banking on survival

Although franchise and chain salons such as Headmasters and Toni & Guy have taken a hit during lockdown, these huge brands tend to have enough in the coffers to weather the storm.  Although there may have been some closures, the brands will generally bounce back pretty quickly.  Small, indie salons, on the other hand, usually operate month to month and will rarely have the cash cushion available to allow them to survive.

Pivoting the pampering

Brands such as Toni & Guy have their own range of products which are sold in supermarkets and as upsells in their salons.  These brands were able to pivot their businesses during COVID-19 by selling their products online and by creating affiliate programs to drum up more sales.  This is, unfortunately, a luxury that smaller salons don’t share.

When it comes to bouncing back from the pandemic, a lot of customers will be disappointed to find that their favourite local salon may no longer be trading.  Thankfully, however, a great many salons have been able to make it through due to business interruption loans.  While times will still be difficult due to social distancing, Booksy’s salon scheduling and management app can be a lifeline for smaller salons.  Booksy allows for online booking of appointments which makes life simpler for customers – but that’s not all.  For small salon owners, the app’s management and marketing features are a fantastic solution in helping them optimise their capacity and easily manage inventory and promotions.

As we head into summer, we’ll also be heading back to our salons and, the great news is that communities have already begun to rally around to support those plucky independents as they get ready to start afresh.

Jessie Ware x Hot N Heavy

Continuing a non-stop year, Jessie Ware releases her latest single, “Hot N Heavy,” today. Co-produced by SG Lewis, “Hot N Heavy,” is a captivating and soulful dance track. The song comes straight from What’s Your Pleasure? The Platinum Pleasure Edition, the deluxe offering from her 2020 UK Top 3 album, out June 11via PMR Records/Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope Records.

The track brings back the electrifying dancehall energy that was so beloved on Ware’s most recent singles. Co-written by Jessie, Shungudzo Kuyimba, Model Child (Danny Parker) and SG Lewis, “Hot N Heavy” brings in familiar influences of 80’s electronica and the modern sensibilities that makes Jessie’s music so memorable. This, along with her truly outstanding vocals & tongue-in-cheek lyrics, really set this track up to be the soundtrack to summer.

“Hot N Heavy” comes along with what has been a stellar 12 months for Jessie Ware. Earlier this year, What’s Your Pleasure? re-entered the UK top 10 following a performance on Graham Norton, alongside her BRIT nominations for Female Solo artist and Mastercard Album. June 2020 saw Jessie gain not only her fourth UK Top 10 album of her career, but also her highest charting record at No.3 on the UK Official Album Charts.

As if this wasn’t amazing enough, she went on to release her first cookbook and continued her immensely popular podcast Table Manners and recently hit a massive milestone of 21 million individual listens, featuring household names such as Dua Lipa, Kylie Minogue, YUNGBLUD, Robbie Williams, Alanis Morissette, Dawn French, and Dolly Parton to name a few.

Catch Jessie live when she embarks on her UK 2021 tour that has been rescheduled for this December.

American Soul’s Katlyn Nichol Releases Debut Single

Captivating audiences on hit television shows such as American Soul and Black-ish, North Carolina-born and Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, actress, and performer Katlyn Nichol has signed to CMNTY Culture RCRDS and Republic Records. Now, she steps into the spotlight with her brand new debut single “Liar” today via CMNTY Culture RCRDS/Republic Records.

The track, which was produced by Sak Pase, showcases her standout signature style. Over production infused with an African sample, nostalgic beats, and wild horns, her voice shines on introspective verses and a powerhouse hook alike. She captures the essence of classic “Jersey Club” records, while locking into an unstoppable groove

“Liar” not only introduces Katlyn as a dynamic all-around entertainer, but it also hints at much more to come.

For as much as Katlyn Nichol flourishes in front of the camera as an actress, she really thrives the moment she picks up a microphone. The North Carolina-born and Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, actress, and performer can hit steeple-size vocal peaks, get sassy on a beat, and dazzle with charisma and charm all within the span of the same song. At the age of two, Katlyn would sing from her car seat, belting out gospel runs along with the radio. Soon, she found herself recording backup vocals and melodies for her dad’s recordings and decided to devote her life to music at that young age. Relocating to New Jersey, she gained her first industry experience by working with various management companies in between attending the prestigious Cicely L. Tyson Community School of Performing and Fine Arts. By 12-years-old, Mary J. Blige personally signed her to Matriarch/Def Jam Records. The legend often invited Katlyn to make guest appearances on stage. All of these moves contributed to her evolution as an artist and all-around entertainer. She nailed an audition for BET’S American Soul and captivated millions as Simone Clark, acting, singing, and dancing for the run of the show. In 2020, she joined the cast of Black-ish as Olivia Lockhart and will be returning for the upcoming final season. However, she never stopped writing, recording, and singing. During early 2021, she caught the attention of CMNTY Culture RCRDS and Republic Records and landed a deal with the label.

Goose Hosts Eclectic Mini-Fest FRED

Connecticut rockers Goose will be hosting an eclectic mini-fest called FRED the Festival  a three-day event on the revered LOCKN Farm in Arrington, VA. Anchored by four sets of Goose, the lineup also features Dawes (original set + Black Sabbath Paranoid set), Dr. Dog, Hiss Golden MessengerCory WongGrateful Shred, Sammy Rae & The Friends, aGOOSEtic Trio, and more.

“Last year, we were booked at LOCKN and we were so excited to perform on that legendary stage for the first time. We were all pretty disappointed after the festival was canceled so it’s an honor to be invited back to the farm for our own event,” said Goose’s Peter Anspach (Guitar, Keys, Vocals). “Along with an amazing lineup of incredible bands, we have a ton of surprises planned and we can’t wait for all of you to #getinvolved.”

FRED the Festival will also mark a long-awaited return to the stage for Vasudo for the first time since the summer of 2013. Regarded as Goose’s musical predecessor, the roots/rock/reggae band features Rick Mitarotonda (Guitar, Vocals), Matt Campbell (Keys, Vocals), Peter Anspach (Keys, Vocals) Trevor Weekz (Bass), and Jeff Arevalo (Drums). Also returning from an extended hiatus for a Friday late-night set is ElephantProof, a four-piece jazz/funk/EDM project formed at Berklee College of Music by Ben Atkind (Drums), Sean Cronin (Guitar), Shon Gordon (Bass) and Chris Enright (Keys).

Goose recently released the third song from their eagerly awaited new album, SHENANIGANS NITE CLUB out tomorrow, Friday, June 4The 10-minute odyssey the band is calling “Madhuvan” is a live show staple of late that the band shortened for the studio version. Though half as long here, the song still captures the travelogue aesthetic that has made it a fan favorite. Classically Goose in that its groove is as deep as its sense of melody is indelible, “Madhuvan” references the story of Dhruva and his quest for enlightenment, originally written in the Bhagavata Purana. The song is an exploratory journey, examining life’s most beautiful offerings and most dangerous pitfalls.

“The underlying idea is questioning what you’re pursuing and that, ultimately, true fulfillment often comes from something other than outer acquisition,” says guitarist/vocalist Rick Mitarotonda.

SHENANIGANS NITE CLUB is Goose’s second studio LP and first full-length collection in more than five years. It was heralded in March with the release of its first song, “Spirit of the Dark Horse.” In April, the band released “So Ready.” Hitting that sweet spot where rock met disco in the late 70s, the slinky funk pocket groove of “So Ready,” made indelible by its catchy wide lapel melody lines and liquified guitars, is available now at all DSPs and streaming services. An animated official music video that harkens back to the feverish Saturday nights of the dancing days of yesteryear is available for streaming via Goose’s YouTube channel.

SHENANIGANS NITE CLUB follows the recent release of Goose’s remarkable cover of Vampire Weekend’s “2021 (January 5th, to be exact),” featured on Vampire Weekend’s new 40:42 EP and available now at all DSPs and streaming services. Personally commissioned by Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig  a longtime Goose fan with the only directive to make it twenty minutes and twenty-one seconds long, the expansive track is accompanied by a full-length performance video, streaming now via YouTube. Relix magazine just published an interview between the band and Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig. Read it HERE.

WATCH GOOSE x VAMPIRE WEEKEND’S “2021 (JANUARY 5TH, TO BE EXACT)”

Hailed by Billboard for their “penchant for innovation and creativity during the pandemic,” Goose debuted some of the new SHENANIGANS NITE CLUB songs during a series of socially distant live dates beginning May 3 and 4 at Frederick, MD’s Showtime At The Drive-In and then hitting North Charleston, SC’s Riverfront Park (May 6) and Pelham, TN’s The Caverns Above Ground Amphitheater (May 8 and 9). All five dates completely sold out after unprecedented demand; limited tickets remain for shows at Silver Lake Drive in Perry, NY (June 15 and 16) and Legend Valley in Thornville, OH (June 18 and 19). For updates and complete details, please visit goosetheband.com/tour.

An ode to oft-forgotten vestiges of Goose’s musical journey, both personal and collective, SHENANIGANS NITE CLUB marks the apex of a rich history between friends of differing ages and experiences from the same small town in Connecticut, drawn together through a deep love of music and storytelling. Songs like the tectonic “Labyrinth” and the ruminative deep-dive, “SOS,” fluidly traverse genres with head-spinning hooks, technical fireworks, and the kind of rare chemistry only possible among truly close collaborators.

“While we’ve been touring, the record has been happening in the background,” says Mitarotonda. “It’s been quite the process. At times, it was difficult. The record is a companion to those growing pains.”

Goose made their remarkable debut with 2016’s Moon Cabin and quickly took flight, playing countless shows while steadily amassing a fervent nationwide following. Years of relentless touring culminated in a string of milestone festival performances during the summer of 2019, highlighted by a now-legendary performance at Scranton, PA’s annual Peach Fest (streaming in its entirety HERE). Further touring followed, including a completely sold-out fall headline run and hastily scheduled dates at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom and Music Hall of Williamsburg in January 2020, both of which proved instant sell-outs.

2019 and 2020 also saw Goose return to the studio for a series of extraordinary single releases, collected on last year’s NIGHT LIGHTS EP (available HERE). The tracks mastered by the first-ever female GRAMMY Award winner for “Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical,” Emily Lazar (Sia, Clairo, Haim) exhibit a fully unified live outfit eager to showcase and develop their studio voice.

Due in part to their trademark inclination for improvisation, Goose was able to creatively navigate the myriad challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. A succession of intimate virtual performances culminated with the unprecedented “Bingo Tour,” a two-week live streaming event featuring four unique concerts with setlists determined by the outcome of a live Bingo game. Held at a bucolic private property in Fairfield County, CT, the interactive performances were captured for posterity in the full-length concert film, Bingo Tour, joined by an exclusive 55-minute behind-the-scenes documentary and available to rent or download HERE.

Fall 2020 saw a welcome return to live performance with a slew of sold-out drive-in shows across the Northeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic regions. Propelled by seemingly unstoppable momentum, Goose wrapped up the year with their seventh annual Goosemas holiday benefit concert, streamed live from a rooftop in New York City’s Rockefeller Center to over 50K fans exclusively via Twitch’s new RelixChannel. The epic 3-hour performance which raised over $45,000 for NIVA’s Save Our Stages and Conscious Alliance  can be viewed now at the official Goose YouTube channel HERE; a full-length audio recording is available via Bandcamp HERE.

“Our dream is to inspire people to step off the beaten path,” says Mitarotonda. “There are a lot of voices that tell you to play it safe. I think the coolest thing in the world is when someone breaks free and goes for whatever weird shit they dream of doing.”

Goose is Rick Mitarotonda (vocals, guitar), Peter Anspach (vocals, keys, guitar), Trevor Weekz (bass), Ben Atkind (drums), and Jeff Arevalo (vocals, percussion, drums).

7 Ways to Stay Positive When You Have a Difficult Health Condition

When you’re living with a chronic illness, a setback or interruption can be incredibly frustrating. It can be hard to focus on the good when you have a flare-up, you’re too tired to do your daily activities, or you feel like you’re back to square one. You’re allowed to feel frustrated, but it’s essential that you get right back on that horse and keep staying positive with these tips.

1. Count Your Blessings

When you have a difficult to manage health condition, it can be hard to see the positives. However, people with chronic illnesses are more able to cherish the small things in life, are typically more motivated to achieve their goals, and are more understanding people. Plus, people with chronic illnesses tend to make better friends that really care about your well-being.

2. You’re a Superhero, If You Really Think About It

Whether you have a chronic illness with prominent flare-ups or you have an embarrassing health condition that causes excessive sweating, you’re managing your illness despite it. For example, people with hyperhidrosis are still looking out for the best deodorants for excessive sweating, and Fibromyalgia patients are still staying active despite their pain. Your resilience is admirable.

While you may not feel like a superhero at your worst, most people could handle what you’re going through at your best. You’re strong, so give yourself some credit for your hard work!

3. Remember: You’re Not Failing

Sometimes an unexpected flare-up of your complex health condition will cause you to take a step back, cancel plans, or take time off school. It can be challenging to take a break while you’re trying to reach your goals, and you may become self-critical when you have to. However, setbacks do not equal failure. You’re human, and sometimes humans just need to survive the day.

4. Find Something The Makes you Happy

It’s important to find something you enjoy that can keep you busy while you wait out the flare-up. Sometimes, there isn’t anything you can do at this moment, but waiting around for the difficult time to stop won’t make it any easier. So instead, start up that hobby that you always wanted to try, but couldn’t, or put your frustration and anger into music, exercising, or creating art.

If you’re in pain or your illness prevents you from doing the thing you love, try something else. This blog post that centers on helping people with chronic illnesses find hobbies can help.

5. Do Something Small for a Loved One or Stranger

When we feel down, it can help to give to someone that needs our help to put our own pain into perspective. That doesn’t mean you should go to a volunteer shelter and compare yourself to someone else because that won’t make you feel any better. However, simply helping a person who needs you can help you feel more positive and give you the strength to tackle tomorrow.

6. Break Down Tasks Into Manageable Steps

After a setback, you may start to get overwhelmed by tasks that now feel out of your grasp, even if they were perfectly manageable in the past. Don’t beat yourself up for this change because you can adjust how you tackle these tasks. While you’re recovering, you don’t have to keep the same busy pace as you used to, but that doesn’t always mean you can’t do anything.

Break your to-do list down into smaller steps and take frequent breaks to maintain your pace. It’s a lot easier to cross off “wash the dishes, wipe the counters” than “clean the house.”

7. Know That the Best is Yet to Come

When managing a chronic illness, it can be hard to see what’s on the other side of a flare-up, but just like the last time this happened, you were able to recover. Even if you didn’t recover fully, you still were able to make your situation more manageable. Keep on believing you can conquer your worst moments because you can, and you will. WonderWorks Panama x Good Vibrations

WonderWorks Panama City Beach has an array of exhibits that help educate people about science. The newest exhibit on earthquakes, called Good Vibrations, opens June 11, 2021. Good Vibrations will spotlight Tuckaleechee Caverns, and how they document seismic activity around the world. The new exhibit was a topic request from educators, so it seemed appropriate that they also name the exhibit.

“We are happy to offer this new exhibit about earthquakes, which was a request by teachers,” said Michael Walsingham, general manager of WonderWorks Panama City Beach. “People will have a great opportunity to learn about seismic activity, along with where and how it’s measured.”

The Tuckaleechee Caverns are home to the most sensitive seismic station on Earth. It detects any and all tectonic movement anywhere in the world. If a country is testing a nuclear weapon or there is an earthquake, it has that information within seconds. Once it does, within 300 of a millisecond, it relays that important information directly to the U.S. Military; Vienna, Austria and Geneva, Switzerland. The information is collected 24/7 and is crucial to national security, as well as being able to provide earthquake information.

The exhibit, Good Vibrations will help share the importance of the Tuckaleechee Caverns and what they are doing in monitoring seismic activity. The information in the exhibit meets the educational standards on earthquake and seismic activity, and is one of WonderWorks’ many STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) related learning exhibits. The exhibit name was suggested by teachers.

“This is going to be a great summer, with families taking the time to include learning activities along with having fun,” added Walsingham. “At WonderWorks, we are where learning and fun come together, with the whole family enjoying their time here.”
