Jack Savoretti x Too Much History

Today, UK singer/songwriter Jack Savoretti debuts a new track titled,  “Too Much History,” along with an accompanying visual.  The song is the second release from his forthcoming album – Europiana – due out June 25 on Capitol Records and available to pre-order now.  “When you have history with someone I think that is a good reason to celebrate, says Savoretti. This is the song to play when you’re celebrating just that.”

“Too Much History” follows Savoretti’s irresistible new single, “Who’s Hurting Who” — a disco-fueled pop track featuring the legendary Nile Rodgers. Watch the video HERE. Co-produced by Rodgers and Mark Ralph (Tove Lo, MARINA), “Who’s Hurting Who” arrives as a gloriously upbeat piece of soul-pop, perfectly showcasing Savoretti’s alluring vocal presence. With its dance-ready grooves, glistening guitar riffs, and lavish string arrangements, the song fully embodies the elegant escapism of Europiana, an album Savoretti describes as “the music of my childhood summers, remade for today.”

The seventh full-length from Savoretti, Europiana serves as the follow-up to his gold-certified album Singing to Strangers: a 2019 release that marked his first #1 on the UK album chart and earned praise from such outlets as The Telegraph (who hailed its “heady love songs mixing lush orchestrations with a tight, electric band”). This time around, Savoretti recorded at the famed Abbey Road Studios with leading producers like Cam Blackwood(London Grammar, Florence + the Machine), approaching the album with more confidence and imagination than ever before. “Singing to Strangers was my first album that wasn’t all about me, which I loved,” Savoretti says. “Europiana pushes that further. There are more characters and bigger concepts. I’m looking out at the world, not inwards.”

Jack Savoretti – Europiana

Jack Savoretti’s seventh album arrives with its own genre. Europiana is both its title and a term coined to capture the spirit of the songs and the sun-soaked influences they absorb. Think Riviera glamour and Italian elegance. Picture golden beaches, endless azure skies and piano bars with punters spilling onto cobbled streets. Grab a rosé – heck, the whole bottle – to spur memories of lunches that last until dusk and heading home with loved ones to dance until dawn.

“When I came up with the concept, some people thought I’d lost the plot,” laughs Jack. “What? You want to invent a new genre? In fact, it already exists – it just isn’t acknowledged.  Europiana isn’t a sound. It’s references and inspirations and the emotions they evoke. It’s the music of my childhood summers, remade for today.”

The sonic seeds of Europiana were sewn with 2019’s sumptuous Singing To Strangers, Jack’s first No.1 album and his third consecutive gold seller. The songs were begun in scorching sunshine last year at Jack’s Oxfordshire home, with doors and windows wide open.

“We were very fortunate with the weather,” says Jack. “My house became a haven for my whole band. The moment the first lockdown lifted, they were all calling me, asking to come hang out in the countryside.  For weeks we literally lived Europiana. They’d arrive and I’d make a big lunch, eaten outside with loads of rosé. Then we’d go inside to write. The sun and fun seeped into the songs. This isn’t an album we could have made in winter.”

Two guests joined in remotely- Nile Rodgers features on the disco-fueled first single ’Who’s Hurting Who,’ an instant classic doused in Riviera life and roller skate parks. John Oates, stranded in Nashville, played guitar and sang backing vocals on the lush “When You’re Lonely.”

Aptly for an album about family and friendship, you’ll also hear Jack’s wife and children sing. The bulk of the album was co-written with members of Jack’s longtime band, the striking strings were arranged by violinist and close friend Phil Granell and soul-pop belter “Calling Me Back To You” is a collaboration with friend and newcomer Gizmo Varillias.

Produced by Cam Blackwood (George Ezra, London Grammar and Singing to Strangers) and recorded late last year at Abbey Road, Europiana is the sound of an artist utterly at ease. Confidence oozes from every song. Risks are regularly taken, but nothing feels forced. Seven albums in, a fired-up, blissed-out Jack has firmly found his own lane.  ”I arrived with a suitcase of 18 songs and we recorded them all as live takes in ten days,” says Jack. “Everyone was so excited to be back at work, to experience the joy of making music again. As cheesy as it sounds, it was an emotional experience.”

Europiana’s romantic lyrics were largely the result of a loved-up lockdown where Jack appreciated time spent with his family.  “My wife and I were like kids again, the 20-year-olds who first fell in love,” he says. “We remembered why we are together and what our lives to now have really been about. Hence, lots of lyrics about love and happiness and not taking each other for granted.” ”I Remember Us,” both the album’s first track and the first song written, bottles that sentiment and opens with Jack’s wife and nine-year-old daughter singing. “I wanted a French/Italian choir sound, scruffy and innocent, more theatre than pop,” says Jack. “You can’t get that with professional singers. My daughter understood straight away because she hears that music at home.”

On the slinky “Secret Lives,” real-life husband and wife trade whispered lines, while beneath the frivolous fun of “Who’s Hurting Who” are some of Jack’s strongest lyrics.  “It’s my take on the great Kris Kristofferson’s song ‘Nobody Wins’,” he says. “About behaviour I’m all too familiar with, but hopefully is behind me. It’s a serious song in shiny packaging.”

“More Than Ever” finds Jack reminiscing about childhood summers spent in Italy. “Too Much History,” written with Joel Pott, has him committing to his relationship against a backdrop of beats, strings and his wife and daughter on backing vocals.

Disco-soul scorcher “Dancing In The Living Room” is not, as it may be perceived, about life in lockdown.  “We did do a lot of living room dancing during the first lockdown,” says Jack, “but the song is about going home with people you love. The highlight of nights out for me is always coming home and staying up dancing and drinking with friends or family.”

Rousing album closer “War of Words” was written as a lesson to his kids and features both his daughter and five-year old son.  “There are so many fiery topics at the moment, so many people shouting their opinions and unwilling to listen,” says Jack. “I realise how idealistic the lyrics are, but a war of words isn’t the answer.”

Jack approaches Europiana with more confidence and imagination than ever before.  “Singing to Strangers was my first album that wasn’t all about me, which I loved,” Jack says. “Europiana pushes that further. There are more characters and bigger concepts. I’m looking out at the world, not inwards.”

Sophie Powers x Lonely Army

Toronto-born artist Sophie Powers has unveiled her brand new music video for her recent single, “Lonely Army” via Set Records. Her first rock-laced single tackles the feeling of widespread loneliness that so many of us experienced during 2020’s seemingly endless lockdown, featuring powerful vocals that seem much more mature than Powers’ mere 16 years old.

“I wanted the video to embody the same raw real energy as the song itself, “Sophie shares on the video. “From the colour grading to the shots of Toronto under lockdown, the video correlates with how I felt when I wrote Lonely Army: Alone but surrounded by so many.”

Check out the music video for “Lonely Army” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HlguK5DqQg.

Contemplating this during the height of the pandemic made her “brain explode” and she channeled that revelation into an anthemic power ballad. It’s a song to get you through the long nights that ultimately leads you to the hope of all these lonely people feeling vulnerable together. We’re all linked, as the outro musically conveys. Powers sweetly sings, “We can be together: lonely army” as her multi-tracked vocals accompany her in the background. The moment conjures the power of many voices and demonstrates the force of her authenticity.

Fans can stream “Lonely Army” now https://sophiepowers.lnk.to/LonelyArmy.

At just 16 years old, Sophie Powers is the bold voice of a new generation. She understands the unique pressures of modern girlhood and uses her experience to write unfiltered, devil-may-care anthems about the ups and downs of being yourself. One minute she’s confident and cool, with the sneering attitude of a punk rock front woman, and the next she’s vulnerable and raw, channeling the loneliness of contemporary life in a stirring ballad.

In the midst of quarantine, she decamped to Los Angeles, living away from her parents for the first time in her life with a group of musicians. “In Toronto, I had my parents and friends constantly giving input and telling me what they think about my life. But in L.A. I was left alone with my thoughts. It got quiet.”

In that quiet, she understood her real goal: to express herself honestly. “Music was my outlet during some really dark times,” Powers says. “If I can be that outlet and help other kids navigate what I went through, that’s all I want as an artist.”

Combining the crunchy sound of punk with today’s hip-hop and pop, Sophie Powers is the unfiltered and uncompromising voice of a new generation.

Pandemic Pampering – How independent salons have fared compared to the huge franchise chains

There’s no denying that the pandemic has been tough on the hair and beauty industry.  Unfortunately, as great as technology is, it’s not yet possible to have a haircut or manicure online or by Zoom and, for salons, closed doors have meant that salons have been without income for several months.

A business built on touch

As restrictions begin to lift, there’s still no real normal for salons as many are operating at a reduction – sometimes up to 30% – in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines.  For salon owners, margins tend to be pretty tight and, many make between 5% and 6% on a full book – something which, for the moment, is simply not possible.  In the meantime, overheads such as rent, contracts and utility bills don’t go away.

Resuscitating salons post-pandemic

We’ve now reached a stage where our salons are open once again and it’s time to see how things have shaken out.  Historically, hair salons have managed to ride the wave of tough times extremely well – for example, during the 2008 recession, salons saw little change in their fortunes.  Salon owner, Wall-Innella said at that time, “People find the money.  They won’t pay the mortgage, but they’ll get their hair done”.

A recession is a time to tighten your belt but, what about a pandemic?  In the past, small, independent salons have tended to lose out during times of hardship and, so, let’s take a look at how the pandemic has impacted on independents vs larger chain salons:

David and Goliath

By December 2020, 4,578 hair and beauty salons closed for good in the UK due to the pandemic and the early signs are that the majority of these were small independents – and there are a couple of reasons for this:

Banking on survival

Although franchise and chain salons such as Headmasters and Toni & Guy have taken a hit during lockdown, these huge brands tend to have enough in the coffers to weather the storm.  Although there may have been some closures, the brands will generally bounce back pretty quickly.  Small, indie salons, on the other hand, usually operate month to month and will rarely have the cash cushion available to allow them to survive.

Pivoting the pampering

Brands such as Toni & Guy have their own range of products which are sold in supermarkets and as upsells in their salons.  These brands were able to pivot their businesses during COVID-19 by selling their products online and by creating affiliate programs to drum up more sales.  This is, unfortunately, a luxury that smaller salons don’t share.

When it comes to bouncing back from the pandemic, a lot of customers will be disappointed to find that their favourite local salon may no longer be trading.  Thankfully, however, a great many salons have been able to make it through due to business interruption loans.  While times will still be difficult due to social distancing, Booksy’s salon scheduling and management app can be a lifeline for smaller salons.  Booksy allows for online booking of appointments which makes life simpler for customers – but that’s not all.  For small salon owners, the app’s management and marketing features are a fantastic solution in helping them optimise their capacity and easily manage inventory and promotions.

As we head into summer, we’ll also be heading back to our salons and, the great news is that communities have already begun to rally around to support those plucky independents as they get ready to start afresh.

Jessie Ware x Hot N Heavy

Continuing a non-stop year, Jessie Ware releases her latest single, “Hot N Heavy,” today. Co-produced by SG Lewis, “Hot N Heavy,” is a captivating and soulful dance track. The song comes straight from What’s Your Pleasure? The Platinum Pleasure Edition, the deluxe offering from her 2020 UK Top 3 album, out June 11via PMR Records/Friends Keep Secrets/Interscope Records.

The track brings back the electrifying dancehall energy that was so beloved on Ware’s most recent singles. Co-written by Jessie, Shungudzo Kuyimba, Model Child (Danny Parker) and SG Lewis, “Hot N Heavy” brings in familiar influences of 80’s electronica and the modern sensibilities that makes Jessie’s music so memorable. This, along with her truly outstanding vocals & tongue-in-cheek lyrics, really set this track up to be the soundtrack to summer.

“Hot N Heavy” comes along with what has been a stellar 12 months for Jessie Ware. Earlier this year, What’s Your Pleasure? re-entered the UK top 10 following a performance on Graham Norton, alongside her BRIT nominations for Female Solo artist and Mastercard Album. June 2020 saw Jessie gain not only her fourth UK Top 10 album of her career, but also her highest charting record at No.3 on the UK Official Album Charts.

As if this wasn’t amazing enough, she went on to release her first cookbook and continued her immensely popular podcast Table Manners and recently hit a massive milestone of 21 million individual listens, featuring household names such as Dua Lipa, Kylie Minogue, YUNGBLUD, Robbie Williams, Alanis Morissette, Dawn French, and Dolly Parton to name a few.

Catch Jessie live when she embarks on her UK 2021 tour that has been rescheduled for this December.

American Soul’s Katlyn Nichol Releases Debut Single

Captivating audiences on hit television shows such as American Soul and Black-ish, North Carolina-born and Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, actress, and performer Katlyn Nichol has signed to CMNTY Culture RCRDS and Republic Records. Now, she steps into the spotlight with her brand new debut single “Liar” today via CMNTY Culture RCRDS/Republic Records.

The track, which was produced by Sak Pase, showcases her standout signature style. Over production infused with an African sample, nostalgic beats, and wild horns, her voice shines on introspective verses and a powerhouse hook alike. She captures the essence of classic “Jersey Club” records, while locking into an unstoppable groove

“Liar” not only introduces Katlyn as a dynamic all-around entertainer, but it also hints at much more to come.

For as much as Katlyn Nichol flourishes in front of the camera as an actress, she really thrives the moment she picks up a microphone. The North Carolina-born and Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, actress, and performer can hit steeple-size vocal peaks, get sassy on a beat, and dazzle with charisma and charm all within the span of the same song. At the age of two, Katlyn would sing from her car seat, belting out gospel runs along with the radio. Soon, she found herself recording backup vocals and melodies for her dad’s recordings and decided to devote her life to music at that young age. Relocating to New Jersey, she gained her first industry experience by working with various management companies in between attending the prestigious Cicely L. Tyson Community School of Performing and Fine Arts. By 12-years-old, Mary J. Blige personally signed her to Matriarch/Def Jam Records. The legend often invited Katlyn to make guest appearances on stage. All of these moves contributed to her evolution as an artist and all-around entertainer. She nailed an audition for BET’S American Soul and captivated millions as Simone Clark, acting, singing, and dancing for the run of the show. In 2020, she joined the cast of Black-ish as Olivia Lockhart and will be returning for the upcoming final season. However, she never stopped writing, recording, and singing. During early 2021, she caught the attention of CMNTY Culture RCRDS and Republic Records and landed a deal with the label.
