Choosing the Right Roof for Your Home – A User Guide

If you have recently looked at your roof and decided that it’s time for a change, you might be considering the option of having a new roof installed or carrying out a major repair or renovation. Since home roofs typically go decades without being replaced, homeowners can feel a bit clueless about the modern roofing options that are available because they haven’t shopped for a roof in so long, if ever. If that sounds like your current predicament, you’ve stumbled onto the right guide because below we’ll be discussing all of the fundamentals that you’ll need to know in order to start heading in the right direction with your roof comparison.

Choose the Right Roofing Company

Before you start researching the various types of roofs you can buy, it’s best to go ahead and decide who you’re going to hire to remove your old roof and install the new one. Try to opt for a contractor or company that has been doing business for a while and has plenty of positive reviews. You never want to trust your roofing installation in the hands of a questionable or newly established brand because there could be serious financial and liability-related consequences if anything goes wrong.

According to Semper Solaris, a leading roofing company in Southern California, the quality of the installation will directly determine how long the roof will last and whether it will need premature maintenance in the near future. They’ve been working in the roofing industry for more than two decades and have performed countless roofing, HVAC, and solar installs, so their opinion that installation quality is just as important roof selection is a valid one that’s worthy of consideration.

Consider All Costs & Risks Involved

The roofing installer that you choose will have one of the biggest impacts on the overall cost of your new roof. Dealing with a reputable company will ensure that you’ll be given a fairly accurate quote estimate based on the size of your home, the total square footage of the roof space that needs to be installed, and the kind of roofing materials you select.

Comparing multiple quotes is an advisable step, but don’t let the price be your only criteria. Selecting a roofing installer or material based solely on the fact that they have the lowest price is a surefire way to have a low-quality roof installed on your home.

It’s also important to confirm that your chosen roofing installer is adequately licensed and insured. If they’re not, and an injury or property damage occurs during the project, you could be held liable for the resulting expenses. This is generally a non-issue because being licensed and insured is a standard industry prerequisite, but it’s still worthwhile to double-check, particularly if you’re dealing with a newly established team of laborers.

Select the Right Materials

While you may like the look of certain materials, it’s possible that they might not be ideal for or compatible with your home architecturally. Generally, lightweight materials are more universally applicable, whereas heavier roofing types like slate or tiles represent a significant weight burden on the structure of your home. In fact, a slate roof can weigh anywhere from 800 to 1,500 pounds.

Take the time to learn the pros and cons of each material that you’re comparing. This is yet another reason why you should only deal with a reputable roofing installer, as you can be sure that they know what they’re doing and aren’t going to install incompatible materials on your roof. In fact, they should be able to help you decide which materials would be best suited for your roof based on its shape, size, slope, and the design style of the house below it.

Thoroughly reviewing the defining features of each material option will ensure that you don’t regret your selection later on. Likewise, it could help you discover futuristic new roofing materials such as solar roofs and extended-life asphalt shingles.

Compare the Durability & Maintenance Requirements of Different Shingle Types

Nobody can tell you what kind of roof shingle looks the best in your mind, but shingles do vary in their known durability and maintenance requirements, so those are the objective attributes that you can compare based on research. The two most popular kinds of roof shingles on the market are asphalt and metal. Other common material types include concrete, coal & tar, clay, and aluminum. In fact, there are at least 19 different kinds of roofing shingles that you can take into consideration during your comparison.

The 5 most durable kinds of roofing materials are steel, aluminum, clay, slate, and 30-year asphalt. If you’re after the sweet spot between price and durability, your comparison should probably be between aluminum and asphalt. Concrete and slate are more durable, but like steel, they’re also very heavy, so those materials should only be used on larger homes that have strong supporting structures.

While a reputable roofing contractor will have a designated structural engineer that they can consult with, if you’re spearheading the project yourself, then that’s definitely a consultation that you’d want to schedule. Installing a structurally unsafe roof is one of the costliest and most dangerous mistakes a homeowner can make, as it could lead to significant property damage or injury and leave you with a pile of burdensome liabilities.

Opt for a Roofing Style That Complements Your Home’s Design

Finally, it’s important to base your roof selection on the existing design theme of your home in order to present the need for additional renovations and upgrades. Many homeowners will opt to paint the exterior of their home after a roofing project just to take care of any minor blemishes and add a fresh look to accompany the new roof. Still, beyond painting, you don’t want to feel obligated to change the entire architectural style of your home just to match your roof.

You can use a roofing software to calculate the exact measurements and graphically compare roof styles against a backdrop photo of your home. That way, you can drag and drop design styles until you see one that looks like it would match your home. Once you have a style in mind and you know your roof measurements, you can contact local roofing companies to start comparing detailed quotes.

Consult with Roofing Experts Before Making Your Decision

It’s important to note that no internet guide can substitute the services of a roofing professional. The advice given in this guide is meant to steer you in the right direction, but your actual decision will come down to the services that are available in your area.

As a good rule of thumb, it’s wise to speak with 2-3 roofing companies in your area before you decide who to go with, as you want to give them a chance to compete for your business, and you also want to gather as much advice as you can in the initial planning stage.

Finally, before you initiate a consultation, it would be wise to write down a list of questions that you’re going to ask. That way, you’ll get the most possible value out of the free consultation period that many roofing companies offer, as opposed to aimlessly wandering through the conversation with no particular goal in mind.

How To Achieve Better Bokeh

Bokeh is the blurry part of an image. It is one of the best effects in photography and is often used but still, not as much as it should. Since your bokeh is the blurry part of an image, it keeps the clear part of the photo in good focus and makes it more noticeable. In fact, bokeh makes the most outstanding effect in photography. However, to achieve that, you have to know how to make one perfectly.

Here are four things you can do to improve your bokeh:

Create your own custom bokeh

This is the first thing to try – creating your own bokeh. In any case, photographers have been doing this for ages.

The main way to do this is to make a cutout in any shape that you fancy. You will then place this cutout on your camera lens such that when you take the photo, the opaque parts of the cutout block the light in the right places.

Preferably, use a black paper to make the cutout. You can always start with the simplest bokeh. Just cut a hole the size of a coin on the paper. Stick the paper in front of the lens and when you take your shot, the part blocking the light will be your bokeh. It will be just perfect.

After you have had some practice with simple circles, rectangles and so on, go for shapes that are more complex.

Use the right lens

This is about the choice of the aperture. They come in two types mostly. Cheaper cameras come with octagonal apertures, which produce bokehs in the same shape. Costlier cameras have more blades or curved blade apertures and they give circular bokehs. If you have good budget to buy quality bokeh lens to add to your camera, you can expect to have the best possible bokeh for your photos.

Create a relationship between focus image and the bokeh

This requires you to be a bit creative, but the effect will be worth all the effort. The best bokeh is when the blurred image is related to the image in focus. For example, a goalkeeper standing with the ball with the net in the blurred background makes a striking effect.

A car in sharp focus looks much better with a big truck in the blurred part of the photo. The reason for this is that there is an interaction, especially when you take the photo of the car on the road. The bokeh effect will be much better if the focus and the blurred images are related.

Depth of field adjustment

Even if the background is out of focus, you still want to be able to tell what is in the blurred part of the picture. It is best to aim for a great field of depth. It is all about just how much of the photo is out of focus. Do not make the mistake of using a low value aperture.

Such has the effect of blurring a large part of the image. Since you just want to keep a small part of the photo blurred, you should use a high aperture value. Likewise, do not go for the blurriest background that you can make. The best bokeh is achieved when you can tell what the blurry objects in your photo are.

HIGH SOCIETY

Opens Friday November 15, 6-8pm

30 Orchard Street, New York, NY, 10002
Exhibition November 13 2019 – January 19, 2020

Artist Q&A and Documentary Screening: Saturday November 16, 4 for 4:30pm at Olsen Gruin

Olsen Gruin is pleased to present High Society, an exhibition of new works by Australian photographic artist, Leila Jeffreys. Her second solo exhibition since 2017, High Society will be on view at Olsen Gruin from November 13, 2019 until January 19, 2020.

Revisiting the world of the Budgerigar – the subject of her first solo exhibition some nine years ago – Leila Jeffreys’ High Society includes her signature large format portraits and sees her exploring new territory. Working with over 300 budgerigars in a studio High Society reveals a beautiful society of birds through still photography and three panel video art.

Acclaimed for her empathetic artistic vision and intuitive approach, Leila Jeffreys has again captured a vivid sense of personality in her feathered subjects. Each work forges an emotional and sympathetic bond with the audience as Leila Jeffreys establishes parallels between the ‘flock’ and our human concept of ‘community’; a commentary on our need to preserve wildlife societies and their homes.

“There exists a symbolic relationship between birds and trees,” says Leila Jeffreys. “Their survival depends on each other. We depend on them. High Society serves as a visual reminder to leave wild places for these other societies to enjoy, as well as our own.”

Leila Jeffreys (b. 1972) was born in Papua New Guinea and raised in Perth, Australia. Thanks to her adventurous parents she spent much of her childhood travelling and grew up surrounded by wildlife and forest both in Australia and abroad. This sparked her interest in the natural world. Jeffreys works with conservationists, ornithologists and bird sanctuaries to separate her charismatic subjects from their natural surroundings and photograph them with a high degree of technical skill. She is an exhibiting artist with gallery representation in Sydney, London and New York. Her work has also been featured in the iconic Bergdorf Goodman department store windows in New York City. Her book Birdland was launched at Australia’s National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. A documentary titled Bird Nerd: the Art of Leila Jeffreys will debut on the film festival circuit mid-2019 ahead of its television premiere on the ABC later this year. The film is written and directed by Walkley Award winner Poppy Stockell and was commissioned by ABC Arts.

SEN. ELIZABETH WARREN: ESSENCE.COM OP-ED

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) pens an exclusive op-ed for ESSENCE.com entitled, Closing the School-to-Prison Pipeline for Good. In this piece, she talks about the threat that young students of color face every day, rethinking the approach to public education and public safety and more. She states:

“In the 1990’s, hundreds of police officers were deployed to public schools across the country as a component of the war on drugs and later in response to school shootings. Today, at least fourteen million students attend schools staffed with a police officer — but without a single counselor, social worker, psychologist, or nurse.

The result is that in many cases, an infraction as simple as back talking or skipping class that should end in detention or administrative intervention can end in arrest. Over the years, the implementation of policies from Zero-Tolerance to surveillance to criminalizing lateness and absenteeism have created a system of loopholes that trap our most vulnerable students in a pipeline kept alive by the for-profit prison system. It’s a system that disproportionately hurts black and brown students and undermines their learning…As President, I will work to close the school to prison pipeline, by rethinking our approach to public education and public safety…”

In addition, she reflects on her recently revealed plan to invest $800 billion in public schools and how she would invest “an additional $100 billion in ‘Excellence Grants’—that’s equivalent to $1 million for every public school in the country—to invest in things like after school arts programs and school-based student mentoring programs…” This would be in an overall effort toreduce the impact of systemic racial and economic disadvantage on students.

HRE WHEELS

UNVEILS NEW FLAGSHIP TWO-PIECE FORGED WHEEL SERIES S1SC

The new Series S1SC line features stronger and lighter two-piece forged wheels utilizing proprietary forged rim barrels.

HRE Performance Wheels, a company known for making wheels with the utmost style, quality and exclusivity, has added a major product platform to its forged wheel lines with the introduction of the Series S1SC two-piece wheels. The Series S1SC is the first two-piece forged wheel line from HRE and offers greater stiffness, reduced mass, higher concentricity and eliminates the air seal required of traditional three-piece wheels.

The S1SC is the first wheel line to utilize HRE’s new proprietary one-piece forged barrel, named FMR™ (Forged Monoblok Rim). The S1SC wheels feature aggressive styling similar to the Monoblok P1SC and employ multiple technical design features for increased stiffness and reduced mass. In typical HRE fashion, particular attention was paid to spoke details, including intersection points and the fastener flange surfacing. The S1SC FMR™ barrel is launching with a clean contemporary profile, but the design and forged/machined construction methodology allow for future variations incorporating other styles such as vintage J-style flange lips.

“HRE is focusing a lot on advanced materials and technology at the moment, but we are also always looking at ways to improve our core forged products,” said HRE President and CEO, Alan Peltier. “This new two-piece forged wheel platform allows us to offer the modular styling of a traditional 3-piece wheel, while improving performance and quality across every metric, and the Series S1SC is only the first of many new forged wheel series that will incorporate the new FMR™ barrel.”

The Series S1SC wheels feature four different styles including a mesh wheel (S101SC), V-spoke (S104SC), split five-spoke (S107SC) and Y-spoke phone dial (S111SC). The Series S1SC initially will be available in limited fitments for 20-inch and 21-inch diameters for high performance cars, followed by additional designs, diameters and applications in the near future.

HRE Series S1SC wheels are available for order now at www.HREWheels.com and at authorized HRE dealers. First deliveries will start in Q1 of 2020.

Capturing the Best Memories: 9 Wedding Photography Tips for Brides and Grooms

With all the planning that goes into your wedding, the actual day often goes by in a flash. The best way to remember it all? Photographs. Getting the perfect photos can feel like a hugely important thing, as they capture all the wonderful elements and details of the big day, and the emotion on everyone’s faces. They are a keepsake you will treasure and something for everyone to look back on. So how do you make sure your photography is done perfectly? Here are a few tips to get the best shots of your big day:

Find the Right Photographer

Possibly the most obvious in this list, finding the right photographer will guarantee you get the lovely photos you want. Any photographer should be skilled and understand what it takes to get good shots, but like all creative jobs, different people create different things. You should look thoroughly at their portfolio to see what kind of style they have and think about the kind of photos you are looking for. You should also look through other people’s wedding photos to see how differently their days have been captured; if there is a particular set of photos you love, you could even hire the same photographer. Go with what speaks to you.

Relax

For some people, being in front of the camera is intimidating and uncomfortable. It can seem unnatural to pose in front of a camera, but you will have to do your best on the day. Some photographers are good at taking photos unnoticed, so you will most likely appear natural in the shots anyway, as you might not even notice your picture being taken. When it comes to getting photos lined up with your friends and family, or side by side with your partner, you might start to feel more pressure. The best thing to do is to focus on your partner and your emotions. Try not to force yourself to pose if it doesn’t come naturally to you. Just pay attention to your partner and you will end up smiling naturally. If you are nervous about it, there are some useful guides on how to pose ‘naturally’ so you can practice a little before the day. Your photographer will probably provide you with some direction too, so once again, try your best to relax.

Plan Ahead

It’s a really good idea to have another visit to your venue and taking your photographer along is even better, as it will give you a chance to take a second look at the space before the big day. You can think more carefully about where your décor will be going, and you can communicate with your photographer about where the best photos can be taken. Remember that lighting changes quite dramatically between day and evening, so you will also have to make sure you plan the timing well. Some people even get their photos taken before the ceremony, to guarantee perfect couple-shots.

Photo Opportunities

Getting the photos that you want may also mean choosing the right venue. If you know you want photos with a natural backdrop, you need a venue that has gardens. If you want a city backdrop, then you need an inner-city venue. You are sure to get beautiful wedding photos at NYC’s Tribeca roof if a backdrop of the city is what you want. When picking your venue, make sure you consider the potential for great photography. Having great views in the background will make your photos even more special.

Bring Props and Get Creative

If you know you want to have some more playful shots, plan ahead and bring along items you may want in your photos. If your partner is an avid cyclist, perhaps you could get a fun shot of you both on a bike? Once again, think carefully and discuss these ideas with your photographer. There will already be lots of great photo opportunities within your venue with all the décor and things going on, but it doesn’t hurt to prepare some extra scene-setting extras too.

Photo Booth

Some people like to set up a makeshift photo-booth or space where your guests can take silly or fun shots together, which will add another set of photos into your album. It’s a good idea to get some extra photos taken from the perspective of your friends and family, and they can be included in the guestbook as a personal touch. Leaving a polaroid camera by the guestbook will give your guests a chance to take a fun snap to go with their messages.

Enlist Family and Friends

Another idea is to give a camera to each of the bride or groom’s parties, to document the ‘getting ready’ process. Try not to rely on one specific person, as this will put pressure on them to work rather than enjoy the day. But having cameras available lets people have fun and get involved, some of your friends and family members may love having an opportunity to pick up the camera and take their own shots.

Sharing Photos

Setting up a space for all the photos your guests do take makes it easier to collate them all together. You should try setting up an online place using a sharing platform such as Dropbox or Google Drive. This will allow people to upload their photographs and videos into one album and it can be viewed by everyone. It will mean you get to see everything from the day, and no photos get lost or disappear.

Keepsakes

The photos you have from your big day will be super special and a great way to keep them together is by creating an album. There are some great companies that can print your photos into a photo-book or album so that you can flip through your favorite shots. They would also make a lovely gift to parents if you think that’s something they would appreciate. Getting a book or film made from your photos from the day could also be something your photographer offers, so make sure to ask them about this.
