Oliver Malcolm – The Machine

Rising artist Oliver Malcolm takes a trip back to his home country to shoot a new music video, “The Machine.”Continuing his love for the DIY approach, Oliver shot the video first-person style with friends and features his high energy personality and eclectic creative voice — watch it above or here now:

Watch “The Machine” here:

The track first premiered on BBC Radio 1’s Indie Show with Jack Saunders, who delved deep into the meaning behind the track. Oliver tells the radio host that the lyrics revolt against the social institutions that prioritize material and financial gain above all else, transforming their subjects into simple cogs in “The Machine.” The song was a playlisting favorite when it was released earlier this month including being featured on the cover of Amazon Music’s “Breaking Alternative” playlist.

About Oliver Malcolm

Oliver Malcolm got his start early, teaching himself how to spin records at 12 years old. Shortly after, he downloaded Logic and taught himself how to produce – working with IDK, Aluna George, Joey Bada$$, Jay Rock, Masego Tinashe and more. Now twenty, Oliver has developed his own voice. Touching everything from the production, vocals, songwriting, engineering, mixing, and mastering,  Oliver’s sound is unique and does not fit the mold of one genre. A multidisciplinary at heart, this is just the beginning of music lovers can look forward to from the new artist.

Praise for Oliver Malcolm:

“Oliver Malcolm is the dynamic rising star ready kick up a storm with his diverse, new punk-indebted EP” — NME

“With its deep bassline and bluesy melodies alchemizing jazz and pop influences, he crafts an almost tangible atmosphere of melancholy [in “Helen”] as pleas to a woman echo throughout” — Pigeons & Planes, Best New Artist

“The drums lurch toward the offbeats, some looped guitar picking tugs against that pulse and Malcolm’s voice is a rattled, quavery moan…Everything stays off-kilter for the two and a half paranoid minutes of “Switched Off” by Oliver Malcolm” — New York Times, Playlist

“Oliver Malcolm’s ‘Switched Up’ Is Intoxicating… new single ‘Switched Up’ is a mesh of influences, a confluence of sounds, a mosaic of techniques.” — CLASH

“A lot of artists claim genre-blending style, but Malcolm’s is altogether impossible to define. Is it alt-blues? Dark electro-pop? Folk-hip-hop? Does it matter?” — TIME Magazine, Best New Song

“The hip-hop producer-turned-twisted musical anarchist is making songs for nobody but himself. You’ll love them anyway.” — i-D Magazine

Civil Rights Sculpture

On July 6, 2020, the new St. Pete Pier™ and its St. Pete Pier District debuted world-renowned artist Janet Echelman’s latest large-scale aerial sculpture. The work, which was inspired by both the destination and its connection to the Civil Rights Movement, incorporates materials and technology utilized by NASA. Entitled ‘Bending Arc,’ the aerial sculpture is composed of 1,662,528 knots and 180 miles of twine and spans 424 feet, reaching 72 feet at its tallest point. Named an Architectural Digest Innovator for “changing the very essence of urban spaces,” Echelman and her work defy categorization.

Echelman’s artwork offers visitors an oasis where they can seek a moment of calm sensory experience and heightened awareness of nature and our place within it. “The sky is the canvas for my artwork,” says Echelman.

Embracing change, the monumental sculpture gently billows above the Pier District, allowing the wind to create a choreography of constantly changing shape in the sculpture’s soft surface. The sculpture’s color also transforms at every moment while its surface interplays with natural and projected light. In daytime the sculpture casts shadow drawings on the park and people below, and at night it transforms into a glowing beacon of magenta and violet light. Images available here.

How It’s Made

The technical design process utilizes custom proprietary software that allows Echelman’s team to perform soft-body 3D modeling of the monumental design while understanding the constraints of the craft, and shows digital responses to the forces of gravity and wind.

First, the artist extrudes custom color PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) into fiber. PTFE is a highly-engineered technical fiber that retains its strength under UV exposure, and for this reason has historically been used to coat astronauts’ spacesuits.

Then the artist mixes multiple fiber colors together and braids them into twine. The blended colors of twines are wrapped onto bobbins and loaded onto looms which knot lengths of diamond mesh netting. Mesh is hand-cut and hand-knotted together to sculpt complex geometric forms.

Separately, UHMWPE (Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene) fiber is braided into ropes. This fiber is 15 times stronger than steel by weight and was used by NASA to tether the Mars Rover. These ropes are spliced by hand to create the 420 ft rope structure using a method that fishermen and mariners have used for centuries. Then the net is meticulously hand-knotted to the rope structure.

Cranes arrive on site to pull the ropes into tension at maximum force levels of 65 tons at top of masts. The net and rope structure has been engineered by Arup to withstand a design wind load of 150 mph.

The sculpture is illuminated with sustainable low-energy LED lights which project a combination of colors designed by the artist to transform the sculpture at night into a glowing beacon.

About ‘Bending Arc’ and Janet Echelman

The internationally-renowned artist, born and raised along the shores of Tampa Bay, was inspired by historical postcards depicting blue and white striped beach parasols together with the geometric forms made by colonies of barnacles growing on the underside of the pier itself. The sculpture’s design in aerial view can be read as three barnacle-like parasols nestled together.

As she continued her design process, she learned of the site’s important Civil Rights Movement significance, as the place where local citizens began peacefully challenging racial barriers, leading to the 1957 US Supreme Court case ruling which upheld the rights of all citizens to enjoy use of the municipal beach and swimming pool without discrimination. The sculpture’s geometry in section is composed of multiple arcs, which gently billow in the wind. The artist titled the sculpture Bending Arc in reference to MLK’s words: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

Echelman’s work has been celebrated for enlivening cities and have become focal points for urban life on five continents, from Singapore, Sydney, Shanghai, and Santiago, to Beijing, Boston, New York and London. Her experiential sculptures such as her permanent works in Porto, Vancouver, San Francisco, West Hollywood, Phoenix, Eugene, Greensboro, Philadelphia, and Seattle transform daily with colored light and the natural movement of wind.

About the St. Pete Pier

Janet Echelman was commissioned to create a monumental aerial sculpture for the Pier District which is also receiving multiple accolades for its future-forward design, an ambitious and sustainable infrastructure that not only embraces, but empowers St. Petersburg’s growth. It encompasses many things from economic development, urban resilience and environmental awareness to equity, access, enjoyment and recreation – designed to be as rich in use now as it will be in twenty years, fifty years and beyond.

Economic Devastation From Uncoordinated Reopenings

New, peer-reviewed research published today by the Social Analytics Lab at the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy in the prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows the devastating cost of the current chaotic and uncoordinated reopening of states and cities across the US. The study, which used data from mobile phones, network connections through social media and census data, estimates that total welfare is reduced dramatically when reopening is not coordinated among states and regions.

The study showed, for example, that the contact patterns of people in a given region are significantly influenced by the policies and behaviors of people in other, sometimes distant regions. In one finding, it showed that when just one third of a state’s social and geographic peer states adopt shelter in place policies, it creates a reduction in mobility equal to the state’s own policy decisions. When states fail to coordinate in the presence of spillovers as large as those detected in the analyses, total welfare is reduced by almost 70 percent.

As federal, state and local governments continue opening businesses and relaxing shelter-in-place orders nationwide, policymakers are doing so without quantitative evidence on how policies in one region affect mobility and social distancing in other regions. And while some states are coordinating on COVID policy at the level of “mega regions,” most, unfortunately are not. This lack of coordination will have devastating effects on efforts to control COVID-19, according to the study.

“There have been many calls for a coordinated national pandemic response in the U.S. and around the world, but little hard evidence has quantified this need,” said Sinan Aral, Director of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy and a corresponding author of the study. “When we analyzed the data, we were shocked by the degree to which state policies affected outcomes in other states, sometimes at great distances. Travel and social influence over digital media make this pandemic much more interdependent than we originally thought.” “Our results suggest an immediate need for a nationally coordinated policy across states, regions and nations around the world,” he added.

Governors from all states and territories will convene virtually for the Summer meeting of The National Governor’s Association on August 5. The MIT study not only assesses the impact of an uncoordinated reopening, but also gives governors a map with which to coordinate in the absence of national guidance. The research shows for all fifty states, which states affect each other the most and thus maps the states that should be coordinating. These maps are sometimes surprising because, as a result of digital social media, each state’s success with social distancing is impacted by the policy decisions not just of geographically proximate states, but also of socially connected, but geographically distant states. For instance, Florida’s social distancing was most affected by New York implementing a shelter-in-place policy due to social media influence and travel between the states, despite their physical distance. New Hampshire had a strong influence on adjacent Massachusetts, despite being a small state.

As the Governor’s Association convenes, this research highlights the need for states across the country to coordinate, even if they are not near one another and the results suggest which states should be coordinating with which other states based on the strength of the spillovers between them.

Snow Patrol – The Fireside Sessions

Snow Patrol have announced their new EP, The Fireside Sessions. Written and recorded during lockdown, the EP will be released on August 21 and include five songs that were written with the help of the band’s fans during their “Saturday Songwrite” Instagram livestreams. In a nod to this collaboration, The Fireside Sessions will be released under the banner of Snow Patrol And The Saturday Songwriters. The fist single off the EP, Reaching Out To You, it to be released on July 30.

All proceeds from the project will go the the Trussell Trust Charity, which supports a nationwide network of food banks to provide emergency support to people locked in poverty and campaign for change to end the need for food banks in the UK.

Speaking about how The Fireside Sessions came about, frontman Gary Lightbody says, “During lockdown I wrote a song each Saturday on Instagram Live. People from all over the world participated and each week there was 4 or 5 thousand people involved over the course of the hour: The Saturday Songwriters. They would suggest chords and lyrics and I would put them all together and add in a few of my own where appropriate but my unwritten rule was that there would be lyrics from a Saturday Songwriter in each line of the song. We did it for 11 weeks and wrote 12 songs together. It was a lot of fun.”

Completing the EP’s tracklisting alongside Reaching Out To You are On The Edge Of All This, The Curve Of Earth, Dance With Me and Light Years. The Fireside Sessions follow’s last year’s Reworked album, which saw the quintet offer up alternate versions of iconic tracks alongside some deep cuts.

Babe Wine

Living with your partner during quarantine seems to go one of two ways. Either you become closer than ever and realize you’re meant to be, or you decide you’re just not that into them (like, why do they eat yogurt during a Zoom meeting?!) and that you need to break up… like, yesterday.

BABE Wine and Bumble (who just hit 100 million users in July) are teaming up for the first time to cover your moving costs if you’re stuck living with your ex, so you can sip and scroll while they do the heavy lifting – literally.

From today, Thursday, July 30 through Thursday, August 6, those who are newly single and looking for a fresh start can tag themselves (or a friend who’s newly single) in BABE’s post on @drinkbabe to be entered into the contest. Five winners will be chosen from the comments, and they’ll officially be one step closer to moving on.

KEM and Toni Braxton illustration done by Mina Tocalini of 360 MAGAZINE.

Kem × Toni Braxton

On the heels of KEM’s smash hit Lie to Me which has maintained the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Adult R&B Songs chart for six weeks in a row, the R&B superstar releases his new single, Live Out Your Love featuring the iconic Toni Braxton. KEM’s signature silky vocals give way to Braxton’s rich, sultry sound on the track, which is from his upcoming album, LOVE ALWAYS WINS (Motown), set for release on August 28. The two artists co-wrote the song and KEM produced it with Derek “DOA” Allen.

The collaboration was sparked last year when Braxton extended an invitation for KEM to perform at her Valentine’s Day concert in Detroit. My wife and I went to Toni’s show at the Fox Theatre, recalls KEM. She called me up onstage to sing with her and it was an incredible moment.

While working on his new album, KEM began to envision Live Out Your Love as a duet and asked Braxton to join him. Due to COVID-19, they couldn’t record in the same room. When Braxton sent her vocal to KEM, he was blown away. I loved the way she recorded, the texture of her voice, he says. The pairing of our voices was just amazing.

The pre-order for LOVE ALWAYS WINS launched today. Fans who pre-order the album in digital format will instantly receive Lie to Me and Live Out Your Love. As a special treat to fans, merch will be available at www.musicbykem.com

KEM co-wrote Lie to Me with Anthony Hamilton, Salam Remi, and James Poyser and produced it with Derek “DOA” Allen.

LOVE ALWAYS WINS is the follow-up to KEM’s 2014 album, PROMISE TO LOVE, which debuted at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It entered the Billboard 200 at No. 3, becoming his third consecutive top five album on the tally. PROMISE TO LOVE contained the hit singles Nobody and It’s You, which each spent multiple weeks atop the Urban Adult Contemporary radio charts. Nobody earned KEM his third GRAMMY nomination.

The internationally renowned R&B singer/songwriter has to his credit: one Platinum album (KEM: ALBUM II), two Gold albums (KEMISTRY and INTIMACY), three GRAMMY nominations and six No. 1 singles. In addition, KEM has been nominated for six NAACP Image Awards, two Soul Train Awards and a BET Centric Award.
