TYLA’S NEW MUSIC VIDEO “OVERDUE”

African Superstar Singer and Songwriter Tyla Unveils a Brand-new Music Video for her Latest Single “Overdue” [feat. DJ Lag & Kooldrink].

Fusing house bounce, electronic energy, and pop expanse, the track gallops forward on a propulsive beat as Tyla’s voice stretches from moments of subdued intimacy to an ecstatic and entrancing refrain, showcasing her impressive range. Adding dimension, South Africa’s DJ Lag spikes the song with dance floor ready spirit, while frequent collaborator Kooldrink continues his streak of bangers with Tyla on this record. The music video brings “Overdue” to life in cinematic fashion.

“Overdue” notably soundtracks the Season 2 trailer for NETFLIX’s Blood and Water now streaming on NETFLIX.

Her debut single “Getting Late” [feat. Kooldrink] has exploded as a viral phenomenon. The music video has amassed 4.5 million YouTube views, while the song eclipsed 4 million streams. It has also claimed coveted real estate on playlists such as African Heat [733K followers], Amapiano Grooves [97K followers], Hot Hits South Africa [51K followers], and more. Not to mention, the track debuted on Spotify’s Top 50 chart in South Africa, reaching #27, a powerful feat for an artist’s first release. Powered by an Amapiano beat, her voice glides over this distinct international bounce towards a boundary-breaking hook that’s instantly chantable. Making an impact, PAPER featured the song, while i-D described it as “her impossibly catchy breakout single. Not to mention, the BBC 1Xtra playlist just added her, speaking to her global impact.

Growing up of Indian, Zulu, Mauritian, and Irish descent, TYLA instinctively understood the power of diversity as a child in Johannesburg. She spent countless hours honing her voice at home, singing with her siblings every Sunday as part of a weekly tradition. At the same time, her dad introduced her to R&B and soul, encouraging her to eventually experiment with styles and cultures. By high school, she began posting covers on Instagram before catching the attention of her manager and Creative Director Garth Von Glehn. She wrote and recorded “Getting Late” with Kooldrink in 2020.  Upon the video release in January 2021, it resounded around the globe, reeling in millions of views and notching tastemaker praise.

Signed to Epic Records through a venture with Johannesburg/New York based Fax Records and co-managed by We Make Music and Africa Creative Agency, Tyla has positioned herself for international dominance with style, soul, and spirit.

GREENSKY BLUERGRASS ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM ‘STRESS DREAMS’

GREENSKY BLUEGRASS ANNOUNCES NEW STUDIO ALBUM ‘STRESS DREAMS OUT JANUARY 21 VIA THIRTY TIGERS

FALL TOUR KICKS OFF OCT 8 AT HILLBERRY MUSIC FESTIVAL
PLUS, HALLOWEEN WEEKEND IN NASHVILLE, TWO NIGHTS AT THE RYMAN

Coming off a weekend of three sold-out performances at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater, Greensky Bluegrass is thrilled to announce Stress Dreams’, the band’s eighth studio album, due out on January 21 via Thirty Tigers.

For the past century, bluegrass music has traditionally relayed real tales of American life, struggle, tragedy, and triumph. It gives a voice to the quiet, yet colorful stories woven into the fabric of the country itself. Greensky Bluegrass live these stories through their records and performances. When touring ceased in 2020 in the face of the global pandemic, the band hunkered down and compiled demos individually at first, sharing emails and voice notes. In July 2020, they got together for the first time in four months, dedicating rehearsals to the development of the new material. Once circumstances safely permitted, they recorded what would become Stress Dreams during a session in Guilford, VT and two sessions in Asheville, NC with frequent collaborator and old friend Dominic John Davis as producer and wizard engineer Glenn Brown mixing. They preserved the hallmarks of their sound while widening its expanse.

Greensky is and always has been very unique in our world, says Paul Hoffman. We put our love, energy, and focus into what we appreciate about our music. We come together as a band in a way that’s organic. We take a lot of pride in how we grow and challenge each other too. We’re maturing together. I think we get more Greensky all of the time.

Since their formation in Kalamazoo, MI, the quartet Anders Beck [dobro], Michael Arlen Bont [banjo], Dave Bruzza [guitar], Mike Devol [upright bass], and Paul Hoffman [mandolin] have unassumingly progressed into a phenomenon on their own terms with the support of a devout audience. Rolling back and forth across North America on successive tours, they’ve sold out multiple dates at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the Ryman Auditorium, the Fillmore Detroit, Riviera Theater Chicago, and many more. Beyond standout sets at Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, New Orleans Jazz Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and Austin City Limits, they co-own and have headlined 4848 Festival and Strings & Sol. During 2019, ‘All For Money’ marked their second #1 debut on the Billboard Top Bluegrass Albums Chart and third straight Top 3 entry. They’ve also earned critical acclaim from Billboard, Parade, NPR, and Rolling Stone who hailed them as representing the genre for a whole new generation.

Big Loud Records, Back Blocks Music, and Republic Record’s breakthrough artist Lily Rose continues to deliver new music with the release of the title track from her forthcoming project, “Stronger Than I Am” available everywhere. With the “vocal presence and writing talents that make her poised to take her career to the next level,” (CMT) Rose will release her introductory project Stronger Than I Am, due Oct. 1st.

Marking the fifth song Rose has released from the highly anticipated project, “Stronger Than I Am” dropped alongside a performance-driven lyric video featuring Rose. The ending implies there is more to come and leaves fans hanging as she prepares to release the full project.

“When it comes to ‘Stronger Than I Am,’ I’ve honestly never been more excited for a song,” shares Rose. “When I first heard it, I knew it was a story I would be able to passionately tell and create a moment with fans. It includes everything a great Country song needs: a little bit of sadness, a little bit of drinking, and an incredible hook.”

Written by Griffin Palmer and Geoff Warburton (Shawn Mendez, Demi Lovato), “Stronger Than I Am” is about the struggle of trying to stay strong through heartbreak, admitting sometimes the heartache wins out. Rose walks the listener through the steps she has tried taking in order to move on singing, “I’ve tried taking our pictures off the wall / I’ve tried working from dusk until dawn / I’ve tried all of the friends I can call / Oh but none of it’s helping at all / Something’s that stronger than I am” Rose delivers in the raspy, soulful title track. The project will include two unreleased tracks, accompanied by previous releases “Villain,” “Overnight Sensation,” “Remind Me of You,” “Know My Way Around”, and “I Don’t Smoke.”

Recently featured as part of CMT’s new digital series Viral to Verified, the “rising star” (Billboard) opened up to fans about her whirlwind path to success, from being down to her last dollar to striking a chord with millions of fans worldwide, seemingly becoming “an overnight sensation, 13 years in the making.” Racking up over 78M streams since her Dec. 2020 debut, Rose notched her first number one on Sirius XM’s The Highway Top 30 Countdown and has received critical acclaim from Billboard, Rolling Stone, CMT, Music Row and SPIN. Continuing to pick up steam in 2021, Rose will release her introductory project on Oct. 1 before she joins Chris Lane’s Fill Them Boots tour, kicking off next month on Oct. 28 in Memphis.

Writer Jason Aaron, artist Mahmud Asrar, and color artist Matt Wilson will return to the saga of Conan the Barbarian this December in KING CONAN! The superstar creative team relaunched the tales of the Robert E. Howard hero in 2019 to critical acclaim and are back in this long awaited limited series that will take the story of Conan further than has ever been revealed in ANY media to date!

As Robert E. Howard posited, when King Conan grows restless on the throne, he sails west, toward land and adventure unknown. Now see the first step of King Conan’s fateful journey from Aquilonia, as an old and terrible danger threatens to end the saga of the Cimmerian once and for all!

“I knew as soon as Mahmud, Matt and I finished “The Life and Death of Conan” in CONAN THE BARBARIAN, one of the absolute personal highlights from my career as a comic book writer, that I wasn’t done hanging out with everyone’s favorite Cimmerian,” Aaron said. “As King Conan rode into the sunset at the end of that story, with his son, Prince Conn, by his side, I always knew where I wanted that story to take us next. Now at last comes that next chapter, as Mahmud, Matt and I reunite to reveal a pivotal moment in Conan’s life as a king, as a father, as a mortal enemy of snake-worshipping Stygian wizards and as a barbarian who was born to chase the wind, even to the ends of the earth.”

“By Crom, we’re finally bringing the barbarian-turned-king to the readers,” Asrar said. “It’s criminal how much I’m enjoying drawing each panel in this book considering what we’re putting him through.”

Women Comic Artists are Here #VISIBLEWOMEN

by: Jamia Garrett

On August 5th, 2021 thousands of women took to twitter to share their art portfolios with potential clients and the public using the hashtag #VISIBLEWOMEN. Originally, the tag was targeted at sequential artists by Kelly Sue DeConnick, to shed light to the fact that women in comic art are present in the world and are doing an amazing job at it. The hashtag eventually grew to include women from all artistic fields making the tag a space for creative women from all backgrounds to share pieces themselves to grow their audience. The comic art industry, like so many others is typically a cis-male dominated space with women instead making up a large percentage of children’s and YA graphic novels.

This hashtag was an act of protest due to the fact that women in this field are often overlooked and underrepresented. They are instead passed over for their male counterparts and, like in any field, paid significantly less. In 2018, from July-December both Marvel and DC Comics ran a study on their credited creators. During those months DC Comics released 391 new comics. Only 17.2% of the credited staff were women. Marvel Comics released 486 new comics with only 16.3% of their credited creators being women. These percentages don’t include the considerably small amount of non-Binary creators included.

It doesn’t help that people in this field are freelancers. This means they don’t have to be provided healthcare by the companies they’re freelancing for. Women freelancers with extensive resumes are often overlooked for males with half of their experience leading women to pursue different revenue streams in addition to their comic art. The harassment is another factor which alienates women from keeping a career in comics. Women in the industry have been harassed out of jobs by their peers and by “fans” of those comics determined to keep the industry from evolving. There are noted examples of this happening in major comic companies. There have even been allegations of sexual abuse by men of power in the industry.

Ms. Marvel writer Willow Wilson previously spoke about how hard it was for women to gain professional experience. She said there was a “casting couch” atmosphere to navigating the industry if you were a woman, while men had a very different experience. Men were submitted to the regular trials of networking, knowing the right people and having an ounce of talent.

Historically women with big roles have even been blocked out from conversations in and about the industry. Marie Severin, for example, played a vital part in shaping Marvel Comics into what it is today and still felt left out of conversations while in meetings with men. She acknowledged the “boys club” exists, even in this trade. Marie started out her career as a colorist for EC Comics where it was said by her male peers that she kept the sexualization of female characters from going too far. While there, she was known for using one color on a page, a technique used to put emphasis on the action in a scene that is still used today.

The first documented piece of published sequential art was done by Rose O’Neil in 1896. It was added to a book done by cartoonist Trina Robbins, a notable founder of the underground comic scene who made it her mission to uncover buried women cartoonists. While men were away during WWII women were able to work as comic artists, writing adventure and romance comics only to be replaced by men as they returned home from the war. This erased the legacy that so many women had built for themselves and in some, if not most, cases reduced them to housewives.  Trina Robbins was also openly critical of the sexualization of women in comic production. She’s noted for criticizing work done by Robert Crumbs, being one of few to comment on his choice to display sexual violence against women in a joking manner.

Bottom line, we need this representation in the comic and art world. When women are left out it leads to men being the voice in the room and the unrealistic portrayals of women in them. #VISIBLEWOMEN is encouraging all women to be seen in a space that celebrates and acknowledges their contributions to the art world. With the hashtag animators, 2D artists, concept artists, jewelry makers, and others have the potential to be scouted for their talent and to shape the future of art. This hashtag is part of a longer and deeper legacy for inclusion in the art world. Women make up just about half of comic fans and less than a quarter of women are employed by major comic companies today.
