Tiana Major9 – LUCKY

Motown Records released “Lucky,” a new track from Tiana Major9. A warm, soulful celebration of winning at love, “Lucky” is from her forthcoming EP. SPIN premiered the song, which Tiana wrote with Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman (J. Cole, H.E.R., Anderson .Paak), who also produced, and PRGRSHN (WSTRN, Stormzy, Wizkid). Download / stream “Lucky” HERE. View the accompanying visualizer HERE.

Tiana Major9 says, “I’m so excited to share ‘Lucky’ with the world. It’s taken from my upcoming EP and was made to make you feel good!”

“Lucky” follows the breakout artist’s Motown solo debut, “Think About You” (Notion Mix) – a song that reveals her classic influences yet feels very “right now.” View the lyric video, which premiered on Teen VogueHERE. Tiana, who has been named a Vevo DSCVR artist, roots her bold blend of future-facing R&B, enduring soul, and hip-hop attitude in boundless jazz eloquence twisted up with saucy East London inflection and a touch of Jamaican spirit.

“Collide,” her collaboration with EARTHGANG, has amassed nearly 20 million combined global streams to date. It was the lead single from the acclaimed Queen & Slim: The Soundtrack. Naming it as one of the Best R&B Songs of 2019, VIBE, said, “‘Collide’ is an intoxicating duet that delicately intertwines neo-soul tranquility with harrowing emotion…pure gold.” Tiana and EARTHGANG performed the track on the “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” at the Soul Train Awards ’19 and at Billboard “Women In Music 2019.”

Earlier this year, Tiana featured on “Rainfall,” a track from Stormzy’s new album, Heavy Is The Head, which topped the Official Albums chart in the U.K. VICE has hailed Tiana as “a singular voice in British black soul” and Billboard declared, “Tiana Major9 is one to watch in 2020.”

Fredo Bang – Receipts

With his deep, barking drawl and a natural affinity for melody, Fredo Bang (Fredrick Givens) is the next rhymer to rise out of the Bayou.

Today, the 23-year-old Baton Rouge native has released his new song “Receipts,” as well as the accompanying video, via Def Jam Recordings.

“Receipts” follows Fredo’s collaborations with everyone from YNW Melly to Moneybagg Yo to Kevin Gates. 2018’s 2 Face Bang mixtape put him on the map with the breakout single “Oouuhh” and a streak of hits including “Shootas on the Roof” and “Father” (over 22 million YouTube views). He garnered deeper notice in 2019, with the Big Ape mixtape and  a non-stop string of regional single and video hits that included “Oouuh” Remix featuring Kevin Gates, “Gangsta Talk” featuring NLE Choppa, and “Story To Tell” (Remix) featuring Moneybagg Yo. Fredo entered into a partnership with Def Jam in the fall.  The hits continued unabated with “Face Down” and “Vest Up,” then into 2020 with “Yo Slime,” and “Waitin 4” (with a beat from Hardbody B-Eazy and DJ Chose). Fredo’s next mixtape, Pain Made Me Numb hit in November, with the single + video releases “Cap A Lot” and “Slidin.”  April 2020 brought the back-to-back releases of the single and video “Trust Issues,” and Fredo’s newest mixtape, Most Hated.

Amy Shark – Everybody Rise

Australian superstar artist Amy Shark has released her brand new single and video ‘Everybody Rise’, the first offering of new music since the overwhelming success of Amy’s #1 ARIA album, LOVE MONSTER, out now via Wonderlick Recording Company/Sony Music Entertainment Australia/RCA Records. Check it out HERE.

‘Everybody Rise’ is Amy at her most meticulous – storytelling with adventurous melodies and experimenting with her voice like never before. Amy’s unique ability to connect with her audience through nuanced and emotive lyrics remains strong, in this case taking the feeling of unrequited love and turning it on its head.

Produced by Joel Little (Lorde, Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes) and mixed by Serban Ghenea (The Weeknd, Ellie Goulding, Katy Perry, Halsey), ‘Everybody Rise’ is a commentary on worship culture, how we create idols on social media while losing track of the humanity right in front of us. “The whole idea of writing a song about unrequited love feels overcooked and everyone’s done it, I know,” says Amy. “But I don’t feel like anyone’s done it like this before. I wanted it to sound like all these broken hearts getting together and being like, ‘We all wonder what it’s like to be with you.”

The cinematic video for ‘Everybody Rise’ was filmed in Nashville and directed by Patrick Tohill.
Watch HERE.

Amy Shark burst into the global music scene in 2016 with her breakthrough 5 x Platinum single ‘Adore’ putting her on the map as one of Australia’s most formidable emerging songwriters. The track was Top 15 at AAA and Top 25 at Alternative. This was followed by 4 x Platinum and number one AU Airplay Chart hit, ‘I Said Hi’ and the 2019 platinum single ‘Mess Her Up’. Amy’s debut/breakthrough #1 ARIA album and Platinum-certified LOVE MONSTER was recognized in 2018 with four ARIA awards (“Album of the Year”, “Best Female Artist”, “Best Pop Release”, “Best Producer’ [Dann Hume]) and was nominated for another five. In the US, LOVE MONSTER debuted at #1 on the Heatseekers and Alternative New Artist Chart.  LOVE MONSTER went on to become the highest-selling album by an Australian artist for 2018.

Amy has toured extensively throughout Australia and abroad, performing on several major US television shows including The Late Late Show with James Corden and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Though a 2020 tour is up in the air for now, Amy plans to return to North America in 2021 with her new live show.

“This single is me properly hitting my stride,” she affirms. “The next chapter will define me even more than LOVE MONSTER did.”

Counting Carbohydrates

By Ingrid De La O

Remember the 90’s? The world-wide-web was invented, Google was born and fanny packs were all the rage (and apparently still are).

It was also the time that fats were considered bad, like really bad. In fact, it was in fashion to buy fat-free everything, even fat-free mayo was a thing. Today the really bad crown has gone to carbohydrates while fats are rising in style by the keto industry. I’m glad the world changed its stance on fats. The myelin sheath that protects your nerves is coated in fat. Lack of high-quality fats break down this myelin sheath, and I’d be getting on your nerves right now.

The mentality today is counting calories and carbohydrates. We become mathematicians in some cases and excessively only tunnel vision at these two when looking at the back of the label. The problem is that it is not the macronutrients we should be scared of, but the quality of these macronutrients. The intake of toxins that are rising in our food consumption starting with the use of herbicides and pesticides–which cause a cascade of reactions in the body that promote fat storage, inflammation, and oxidative stress.

Let’s talk about a super-nutrient that most of America is deficient in– fiber. This super-nutrient is a type of carbohydrate. Gasp!

“Only 5% of people in the US meet the recommended daily target of 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men. That amounts to a population-wide deficiency — what nutritionists call the fiber gap”

Fiber is a super-nutrient since it’s a part of so many different foods. Eating a fiber-rich diet is associated with better gastrointestinal health and a reduced risk of heart attacks, strokes, high cholesterol, obesity, type 2 diabetes, even some cancers. That’s because fiber is fantastic in many ways: It slows the absorption of glucose — which evens out our blood sugar levels — and also lowers cholesterol and inflammation. More on that in a second…

But first let’s talk about other important stuff found in carbohydrates–antioxidants! These are abundant compounds primarily found in fresh fruits and vegetables, and evidence for their role in the prevention of degenerative diseases is continuously emerging.

Antioxidants and polyphenols are commonly found in nature bound to macronutrients such as carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. In fruits, and vegetables, carbohydrates are the major component that makes up their matrix. It turns out you need the fibers found in these fruits and vegetables to make the antioxidants bioavailable, that’s because once in your gut they bind to macromolecules such as fiber that improve their bioavailability.

Fiber is able to safely and effectively transport polyphenols to the colon where these compounds may have a protective effect on colon health as they are released during plant fiber fermentation by gut bacteria. That means the more nutrients you get for your gut bacteria including antioxidants, polyphenols, and fibers, the higher the reward for your system, this will boost your immunity, prevent signs of aging, and lend to better overall health and weight-loss success.

No more meal math: Eating high-quality foods—including plenty of high-quality fats—is the new golden rule of weight loss. When you eat the right quality and balance of whole foods, your body can do the rest on its own.

Processed carbohydrates—foods like chips, soda, crackers, and even white rice—digest quickly into sugar and increase levels of the hormone insulin. This is why the keto diet is so darn popular these days!

Sugar is not the problem, the problem is that these toxins found in these foods create inflammation and hinder your overall ability to use sugars as energy. Some of these toxins are artificial colors that create inflammation, rancid fats that are free radicals, artificial flavors that are hormone disruptors, preservatives that kill your gut bacteria, heavy metals that are a wrecking ball to your entire system, nano-plastics that disrupt the liver, brain, and gut, and lots of glyphosate that hurt your liver enzymes along with your thyroid for metabolism.

Antioxidants are the antidote to inflammation, the diversifier of your gut microbiome, the hormone balancers, and a long list of benefits.

So let’s save our math for counting sheep. And pay more attention to the toxins.

Digital Justice Gathering

On Saturday, the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival will host the largest digital gathering of poor and low-income people in this nation’s history.

Streaming/Broadcasting Available in All Formats

What: Poor and low-income people from throughout the country will testify about their experiences of systemic poverty, systemic racism, the war economy, ecological devastation, and the false moral narrative of religious nationalism. They will be introduced by religious figures such as Rev. Dr. Bernice King, CEO of the King Center; Episcopal Bishop Michael Curry; Rev. Terri Hord Owens, the first black woman to lead the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ); and Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner, director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. Artists and activists also will introduce testifiers, including Erika Alexander, David Oyelowo, Danny  Glover, Wanda Sykes, Jane Fonda, Debra Messing, and former Vice President Al Gore. Union leaders including SEIU President Mary Kay Henry, AFSCME President Lee Saunders, SEIU 1199 President George Gresham, and Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants in the Communications. Workers of America, also are part of the program.

The assembly will be streamed on major TV and radio networks, as well as at june2020.org.

*A virtual pressroom will be set up for reporters’ questions on June 20th. Media can register for it here.

**The event will be open captioned with ASL and Spanish interpretation, all of which will be accessible at june2020.org

Who: The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival is co-chaired by Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II of Repairers of the Breach and Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis of the Kairos Center, who will frame the day’s purpose. Rev. Barber will give a call to action after all the testimony, and Rev. Theoharis will challenge religious nationalism. The campaign has the support of 20 national religious bodies, 16 labor unions, and over 200 national organizations. See full partner list here.

When: 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Saturday, June 20th, and 6 p.m. Sunday, June 21st. All times Eastern.

Where: This online gathering will be streamed at june2020.org as well as on major TV and radio networks, and will include participants from more than  40 states.

Why: More than 140 million poor and low-income people live in the United States, or 43% of the country’s population and 700 people die each day from poverty — and that was before the COVID-19 pandemic. The  Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, with organizing committees in 45 states, is building a moral fusion movement to address the five interlocking injustices of systemic racism, systemic poverty, ecological devastation, the war economy and militarism and a distorted moral narrative of religious nationalism, to implement its Moral Agenda, based on years of policy research and budgetary analysis, and to uphold demands on systemic racism. Among the impacted people who will speak are service workers from the Midwest who have worked through the pandemic without PPE; a Kansas farm couple fighting for local health care; a coal miner from Appalachia; mothers who have lost children due to lack of health care, residents of Cancer Alley in Louisiana, and an Apache elder who is petitioning the federal government to stop a corporation from destroying a sacred site in Arizona.

As the nation rightfully continues protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death, the campaign upholds that public policy continues to disproportionately kill people of color and poor and low-income people across the country and that a budget is not simply an allocation of funds, but is a moral document that reflects social values. This digital mass assembly will call for poor and low-income people to build power and register to vote like never before. It presents an opportunity for all people to join together in a united call for justice from wherever they are.

We urge all members of Congress, all governors, the White House administration and both presidential candidates to watch the program to enlighten themselves about the lives of poor and low-income people in this nation and the need for a stimulus bill that helps people from the bottom up.

Background

In 1968, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and many others launched the Poor People’s Campaign, seeking to build a broad, fusion movement that could unite poor and impacted communities across the country, and organize a “revolution of values” in the United States. In 2018, that call was picked up once again by the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival.

Preservation Organization Supports Monument Removal

Today, the National Trust for Historic Preservation announces a major change in its position regarding the preservation of Confederate Monuments in public spaces. A more than 70-year-old institution, which has had to evaluate whether to support saving some of these monuments over the course of its history, is announcing today that it believes the removal of Confederate monuments from public places is justified. The Trust released the following statement:

In recent weeks, protests throughout America and around the world have sprung up in support of racial justice and equity, sparked by the horrific killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and others. The National Trust stands committed to support this fight for justice. We believe that Black Lives Matter, Black History Matters, and that historic preservation has a powerful role to play in telling the full story of our often-difficult history.

A critically important part of this work is elevating and preserving the enormous and important contributions that African Americans have made to our nation and carrying that profound legacy forward through places of truth, justice, and reconciliation. This nationwide call for racial justice and equity has brought renewed attention to the Confederate monuments in many of our communities.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has previously issued statements about the history and treatment of Confederate monuments, emphasizing that, although some were erected—like other monuments to war dead—for reasons of memorialization, most Confederate monuments were intended to serve as a celebration of Lost Cause mythology and to advance the ideas of white supremacy. Many of them still stand as symbols of those ideologies and sometimes serve as rallying points for bigotry and hate today. To many African Americans, they continue to serve as constant and painful reminders that racism is embedded in American society.

We believe it is past time for us, as a nation, to acknowledge that these symbols do not reflect, and are in fact abhorrent to, our values and to our foundational obligation to continue building a more perfect union that embodies equality and justice for all.

Although Confederate monuments are sometimes designated as historic, and while many were erected more than a century ago, the National Trust supports their removal from our public spaces when they continue to serve the purposes for which many were built—to glorify, promote, and reinforce white supremacy, overtly or implicitly. While some have suggested that removal may result in erasing history, we believe that removal may be necessary to achieve the greater good of ensuring racial justice and equality. And their history needs not end with their removal: we support relocation of these monuments to museums or other places where they may be preserved so that their history as elements of Jim Crow and racial injustice can be recognized and interpreted.

We believe that communities have an obligation to take on this issue forthrightly and inclusively. We recognize that not all monuments are the same, and a number of communities have carefully and methodically determined that some monuments should be removed and others retained but contextualized with educational markers or other monuments designed to counter the false narrative and racist ideology that they represent, providing a deeper understanding of their message and their purpose.

We also recognize that some state legislatures have prohibited removal of such monuments, disallowing the rights of local communities wishing to remove these offensive symbols. Until such state laws are changed or overturned, contextualization may be the only option, at least for the present. Our view, however, is that unless these monuments can in fact be used to foster recognition of the reality of our painful past and invite reconciliation for the present and the future, they should be removed from our public spaces.
