On the heels of his Oscar win for Best Original Song, “Shallow” co-writer Anthony Rossomando will look back on his two-decade journey to co-penning the anthemic Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper mega-hit from A Star Is Born’s original soundtrack. Grammy, CMA and ACM winner Lee Ann Womack will share the songs that have won her a dozen awards, including her breakout Billboard Country #1 “I Hope You Dance” and selections from her most recent album The Lonely, The Lonesome & The Gone, named a best-of-2018 by NPR and Rolling Stone.

In addition to sharing their stories and advice, top songwriters will inspire by performing some of their most notable hits from the 2019 EXPO stage. Singer, songwriter, producer and musician Matthew Koma, known for collaborating with Zedd on the #1 EDM hits “Spectrum” and “Find You,” and for co-writing the #1, Grammy-winning and triple-platinum “Clarity,” will be on hand to perform from his impressive multi-genre catalogue. Koma, who has also worked with artists including Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Shania Twain and Bruce Springsteen, currently fronts his newly-formed West Coast band Winnetka Bowling League.

Oscar-winning songwriter, ASCAP Chairman of the Board and President Paul Williams will kick off the Annual ASCAP Membership Meeting. Additional panels will shine a spotlight on some of this year’s hottest areas for emerging music, from the Atlanta music scene to Latin music’s role in mainstream pop, to songwriting in video games. For the first of these, previously-announced EXPO panelist Don Cannon (2 Chainz, Lil Uzi Vert, Jeezy) will be joined by Atlanta music luminaries like 21 Savage manager Kei Henderson, Capitol Music Group’s Senior Vice President of Global Creative Amber Grimes and Tunde Balogun of LVRN, the multi-faceted team behind D.R.A.M., Raury and 6LACK.

Latin music’s growing impact on the US pop charts will be highlighted in a panel with music creators like two-time ASCAP Latin Songwriter of the Year Claudia Brant, DJ Ali Stone (the opener on Justin Bieber’s Purpose tour) and Romeo Santos co-writer and musical director Joaquin Diaz, who join previously-announced Latin Grammy Producer of the Year Linda Briceño (aka Ella Bric). Diaz and Bric will also team up with award-winning producer-songwriter Tommee Profitt (Migos, NF, productions for ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, ESPN, NFL, NBA, NHL, MTV, VH1, NETFLIX, Hulu, HBO, more) and previously announced Mike Woods of duo Rice N Peas (G-Eazy, Mike Stud, Jay Sean) for a Hit Producers conversation about the art and business of producing.

Grammy-nominated and two-time BAFTA-winning composer Austin Wintory (Assassin’s Creed Syndicate) will moderate a panel about creating action-packed songwriting for video games with composers Jack Wall and Cindy Shapiro (Call of Duty, Mass Effect), Darren Korb (Bastion, Transistor, Pyre, Hades) and Ubisoft’s Lydia Andrew (Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate).

The ASCAP EXPO will also give attendees the chance to have their original songs heard by leaders from across the music industry, adding A&Rs like Ty Cannon (Aftermath), Jermi Thomas (Columbia), Jae Brown (Capitol) and Jennifer Goicoechea (Epic) to judge showcases and feedback panels throughout EXPO’s three days. Others added to the EXPO include “Music Business Toolbox” founder Bryan Calhoun.

The ASCAP “I Create Music” EXPO will take place May 2 – 4, 2019 at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles. It is the only music conference completely dedicated to music creation and what it takes to be a professional music creator today, attracting over 3,000 music creators for three days of panels, workshops, master classes, keynotes and one-on-one sessions with the industry’s top hitmakers. ASCAP EXPO panelists participate because they want to give back to the next generation, and the feeling of community and giving back is authentic, infectious and inspirational. Many who come to the EXPO walk away saying that it is a life-changing experience. ASCAP EXPO will be making many more panelist additions in the coming months.

Deterioration of the Spine

New 4K Ultra HD Video Defines How the Human Spine Deteriorates

Watch the video here.

DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE describes the wear and tear of the disc. Degenerative disc disease is a misnomer for the reason that it sounds as though it’s a progressive and threatening condition. This process occurs naturally with age. However, it is not strictly degenerative and is not actually a disease. Degenerative disc disease can also be accelerated by a motor vehicle accident or labor and other repetitive activities, known as traumatic degeneration. The basic problem begins with a tear in the fibers that make up the annulus fibrosus. It is recognized that annular tears cause pain by excreting inflammatory chemicals that are caustic to nerve roots and neural elements. The break down and the collapse of the facet joints causes mechanical pain.

Classically, a patient with this condition complains of neck pain through the scapula (shoulder blade), which is exacerbated by sitting or standing. The pain is commonly reported as being deep, dull, and aching, or a boring pain, progressing distally from the neck into the arm in a nonspecific zone. This is as opposed to radiculopathy, which is an irritation of the nerve root. Pain, numbness, weakness, and +/– reflex changes of the arm might be present.

Loss of bowel or bladder control is an emergency. Seek immediate medical attention!

Traditional treatments include early motion, traction, physical therapy, massage, modalities, acupuncture, osteopathic manipulation, chiropractic care, pain management, activity avoidance, and activity with job modifications. Heat in the form of long, hot showers, sauna, and heat packs can help relieve pain. Application of cold packs and gels could also offer some relief. Medications in the classes of aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, oral steroids, antidepressants, and narcotics might be recommended. Wearing a brace for external stabilization could be helpful in the short term.

When the patient is less symptomatic, specific treatments such as cervical stabilization will often assist with the resumption of function and endurance. Yoga and Pilates may be used to strengthen core muscles, while Medx treatment might help to strengthen neck muscles.

Cervical or lumbar injections such as epidural steroid, facet blocks, or radiofrequency ablation may be recommended.

Cervical or lumbar spine surgical treatments include ACDF and posterior foraminotomy or decompression, fusion and instrumentation.

Prevention: While wear, tear, and break down of the discs is natural and unavoidable, certain factors will accelerate the process. Repetitive bending, lifting, twisting, reaching, vibration exposure, poor posture, poor body mechanics, weak abdominal and extensor muscles, smoking, and obesity can increase the rate of disc break down. An appreciation of the cervical facet joint’s anatomy could, specifically, help in the long-term preservation of neck function. Understanding the function, motion, and limitations of the facet joint can serve as a tool to help slow the process of wear and tear in the neck.

Refinery29’s Style Out There

WATCH NOW: SEASON 3 PREMIERE OF REFINERY29’s SERIES

Style Out There

Refinery29 returns with season 3 of the award-winning video series, Style Out There. With over 23 million views over the last two seasons, host and journalist Connie Wang digs back into the way clothing has given women a way to speak out, look within, and identify the forces that limit their potential. Through these stories, Wang discovers the powerful way fashion illuminates social and political issues, ranging from the connection between sexy clothing and sexual assault to instances when cultural appropriation can actually be both useful and productive.

Episode One of Style Out There is Now Available

In episode one, Connie Wang explores the cultural phenomenon of Disneybounding. Despite Disney’s strict rules prohibiting adults from wearing costumes inside its theme parks, die-hard fans have found a creative way to nerd out with their clothing.

Episode One Highlights:

On What Draws Disneybounders to Disney’s Films and Theme Parks:

“I didn’t grow up speaking English, they would take me outside of class to teach me how to speak English and I felt like that was pretty much Ariel. She was not feeling really part of the Mer-world but not too much part of the human world. Her story to me was very like I get it, I’m in that in between space, I’m neither here nor there and that’s okay and I can be part of both worlds.” – Evette, Disneybounder

“Disney to me is selling a feeling of happiness and joy and magic and nostalgia. No matter how uncertain the world seems, Disney kinda stays constant and consistent.” – Chelsea, Disneybounder

“In a land of synthetic monuments, Disneybounders have found real reasons to share hope, friendships and fanny packs. If the world looks better through rose colored glasses, maybe I’ll grab a pair? Hey, those could go great with a piglet disneybound.” – Connie, Host

On Disney’s Growing Diversity:

“We’re going to see a queer prince one day. We’re going to see a Vietnamese, a Japanese, different parts of Asia we’re going to see a Latina princess from Puerto Rico, from Cuba, from South America. I feel like slowly we’re going to get there one day.” – Evette, Disneybounder

Style Out There will premiere new episodes every week on Refinery29’s YouTube channel, exploring Japanese Cholas subculture in Nagoya, the rise of Afrofuturism across the globe, the American Escaramuzas, and Jamaica’s dancehall queens.
